In some respects, the prospect of returning to some degree of normality is evident on the horizon. However, climate and the future of energy show little sign of a return to prepandemic normalcy. The future of our energy system is being transformed, and oil and gas are crucial for energy stability as well as the transformation. One of the miracles over the past year has been the accumulated knowledge around the human genome and application of this science to the rapid development of efficacious vaccines. As within oil and gas, humans can rise to the challenge to solve complex problems when identified. This is playing out as we see societal drivers around climate change and net-zero carbon emissions. Over the past year, SPE produced 11 events focused on the energy transition and continued the development of the Gaia Sustainability Program initiated by the SPE Health, Safety, Environment, and Sustainability (HSES) discipline. It is now a thriving community of SPE members across all disciplines committed to enabling and empowering all members and other interested parties who wish to engage in the alignment of the future of energy with sustainable development. An on-demand library of Gaia Talks and other resources has been built using the strategic programming framework (www.spe.org/en/gaia). Advances in our understanding and application of technology, and the development of those who can use it to better the world, are highlighted in the selections made for this month’s Technology Focus—genome sequencing of invasive species, technology to identify fatigue, and development of human capital for the industry in Kazakhstan. We must not forget the key element in any strategic improvement of performance: the human being. This starts with developing human capital at the university level. The industry is also working on progressing our understanding and application of human factors and human performance. As mentioned in the October 2020 JPT, the oil and gas industry has formed the Human Performance Oil and Gas (HPOG) alliance modeled after the very successful Dropped Objects Prevention Scheme program. The return to a more-normal life also means that our traditional conference model can reengage membership. Face-to-face meetings accelerate networking and the transfer of knowledge, which is core to the SPE mission. Events focusing on HSES this year include a planned in-person gathering the first week of November: HSES Focus on the Future—Responding to Changes and How the HSES Function Will Grow (3–5 November). This event will primarily cover health, environment, and sustainability with one panel on land transportation safety. It is strategically planned for the same week and at the same hotel in Fort Worth, Texas, where the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers will hold its first Joint Congress on Safety (1–3 November). A key element in building strategies within the SPE HSES discipline is the future of the function. Leading the efforts around this will be the newly formed HSES Executive Advisory Committee (EAC). This EAC, led by Fawaz (Fuzzy) Bitar, senior vice president of HSE and carbon at BP and former chair of the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers, includes HSE leadership from various upstream operators and contractors and will help with guidance and direction for SPE HSES Technical Director Annamaria Petrone. This study highlights the C O 2 , e -emission reduction potentials and related economic consequences for changing steam generation from fossil to renewable. Seven different utility concepts are developed, including a steam accumulator for load management. Peculiarities for the integration of biogas boilers, biomass-fuelled boilers, electrode steam boilers, biomethane-fuelled solid oxide fuel cells, micro gas turbine, solar energy systems, heat pumps and steam accumulators into a steam system with fluctuating steam demand are explained and the energy balance based models for the simulation study are described. The characteristics of batch processes, start up times and part load efficiency are considered via an annual dynamic simulation. Based on a detailed process analysis and dimensioning of the utilities and the accumulator a comprehensive simulation study is conducted for a pet food processing company having an average steam demand of 18,000 MWh at around 9 bar and 3 t/h. The results show that the highest C O 2 , e -emissions reduction of up to 63% is achieved by the transition to a solid biomass-fuelled boiler system. This leads to an increase of the operating costs by 27.8%.

Industries producing non-consumer data generally include extractive industry, manufacturing industry, electric power industry, gas industry and so on. The stocks issued by these industrial enterprises that produce non-consumer materials are called industrial stocks. Industrial stocks have a long history in United States. As early as 1900, industrial stocks became the majority of American stocks. In the same year that the United States overtook Britain as the country with the biggest economy in the world. Even today, more than a hundred years later, industrial stocks still play an important role in the U.S. economy and offer great investment value. In this article, three industrial stocks are selected and analyzed in different investing aspects, which can provide reference for the investors who are interested in industrial stocks. Three companies are the Boeing Company (BA), General Electric Company (GE), Ford Motor Company (F). The results show that BA is most risky and F is most profitable.

This article presents thoughts and experiences of R. Tom Sawyer, founder of International Gas Turbine Institute’s (IGTI) Turbo Expo. Sawyer founded gas turbine technical institute, and set its course for its first four decades, during which time the gas turbine itself, became one of the world’s most useful energy converters. Sawyer joined the American Locomotive Company where he was involved with both diesel and gas turbine projects from 1930 to 1956. R. He served as first chairman of the ASME Gas Turbine Power Division or Gas Turbine Division (GTD). Sawyer was a key organizer, helping to make the exhibit a successful revenue-producing part of the conference. R. Tom Sawyer was involved with IGTI to the end of his life in 1986.

Introduction: B cell lymphoma/leukemias (BCL) are a diverse set of malignancies. The genomic landscape of many BCL subtypes have been described. However, genomic ancestry has rarely been investigated. We applied SNP-based genomic ancestry prediction to comprehensive genomic profiling (CGP) data to identify significant enrichment of ancestry by subtype. We also explored enrichment of genomic alterations (GAs) by ancestry. Methods: During routine clinical care, 2834 unique patient (pt) samples of BCLs underwent CGP for 406 DNA genes and 265 RNA genes to detect all classes of GAs on the FoundationOne® Heme platform. This dataset was enriched for relapsed/refractory pts as they are more likely to have genomic testing as part of clinical care (referral bias). Each pt was assigned an ancestry of American (AMR), African (AFR), East Asian (EAS), European (EUR), or South Asian (SAS) using a SNP-based machine learning methodology (J. Newberg et al., AACR 2019). AMR was defined using a mix of Hispanic and Latin American populations. Enrichment analyses were performed using Fisher's exact test with FDR correction. Results: We compared the ancestry composition of each BCL subtype to the overall ancestry composition of the rest of the sample set (Fig 1A). Pts of AFR ancestry were overrepresented in plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) (OR=7.2, P<0.05); EAS pts were overrepresented in Burkitt lymphoma (BL) (OR=4.99, P<0.05); and AMR pts were overrepresented in acute B-cell lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma (B-ALL) (OR=3.2, P<0.001). AMR SNPs have been associated with increased risk of B-ALL and worse prognosis (PMID: 21297632). We also investigated GAs enriched in specific ancestries. B-ALL AMR pts were enriched for GAs in IL7R, IGH, CRLF2, JAK2, and IKZF1 compared to other ancestries in B-ALL (Fig 1B). These genes were associated with the high-risk Philadelphia chromosome-like ALL (Ph-like ALL) molecular subtype of B-ALL (PMID: 30181314). We found 33% of all B-ALL contained GAs consistent with Ph-like ALL (PMID: 30181314). While we noted enrichment of AMR pts in the overall B-ALL cohort, we identified additional enrichment in the Ph-like B-ALL cohort with 47% of Ph-like B-ALL pts being of AMR ancestry (OR=1.85, p<0.001). AMR pts accounted for almost half the Ph-ALL pts in this cohort; however, even in B-ALL pts without Ph-like genomic features, 32% were of AMR ancestry suggesting this enrichment is not simply due to increased CGP testing in Ph-ALL. In diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL), we found pts to be primarily of EUR ancestry, however we identified ancestry bias in GAs (Fig 1C). CD79B alterations were enriched in DLBCL pts of SAS ancestry, although not significant after FDR correction, consistent with previous reports of increased Activate B-Cell (ABC) cell of origin (COO) subtype and BTK signaling in pts from South East Asia (PMID: 31189540). CDKN2A, also frequently altered in ABC COO subtype, trended towards enrichment in EAS ancestry. CUX1, a tumor suppressor involved in PI3K signaling, was strongly enriched in AFR pts in both DLBCL and B-ALL. One CUX1 insertion variant (G870_G871insSGG) was particularly common in AFR pts with BCL (7/9 AFR, 2/9 AMR), which has been reported previously in Myelodysplastic syndromes (PMID: 24030381). CUX1 alterations have been reported to be associated with increased PI3K signaling suggesting in part PI3K inhibitor trials should proactively include pts of AFR ancestry (PMID: 24316979). Finally, EZH2 alterations were slightly enriched in AMR DLBCL pts, but showed no ancestry bias in follicular lymphoma (FL) pts, of interest given the recent EZH2 inhibitor approval in FL. Conclusions: This study described multiple important genomic differences in BCL using genomic ancestry rather than patient-reported descriptive variables. Enrichment of AMR ancestry was observed in B-ALL overall, and in Ph-like B-ALL. In addition, enrichment of CUX1 alterations was observed in both DLBCL and B-ALL of AFR ancestry. While precision medicine holds the promise to advance cancer care, many acknowledge the potential to unintentionally deepen existing health disparities (PMID: 31112478). Further analysis of ancestry informative markers in BCL, including enrichment of ancestry markers in specific cancer subtypes and ancestry-associated enrichment of specific GAs, may lead to insights into cancer biology and contribute to ongoing cancer health disparities research. Oil and gas (O&G) production activities emits greenhouse gases (GHG) which must be well estimated to improve accountability and formulating efficient mitigation. The Indonesia’s GHG emission reported thru Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) was estimated by Tier-1 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) method, while the O&G company adopts different methodology. This leads to asynchronous GHG emission contribution of this industry to national GHG emission. This paper aims to estimate the GHG inventory from O&G offshore production facility by using American Petroleum Institute (API) Compendium Methodology and compare it with Tier-1 IPCC Methodology. It found that GHG emission estimated by API method is significantly lower than IPCC method. Both methods shown fuel combustion sources are the dominant. GHG emission sources from fuel combustion and flaring have been well identified, but emission sources from venting and fugitive need to be improved. Moreover this study identified that to have more accurate national GHG inventory, the GHG calculation method might be different for each industry segment. This evaluation could improve the future national GHG inventory and as reference for the industry. National emission factors database for O&G industry segment is highly suggested to be developed.

Introduction. A scientific research examining the concern of Gazprom PJSC (a leading Russian energy company) stock quote forecasts is relevant because it could determine investment prospects in the stock market of the Russian Federation. The key idea of this work is to find the most profitable and investable Russian company and outline the factors among many others that affect its stock quotes. Purpose . The author attempts to construct multiple linear regression equations reflecting the impact of the economic factors (the prices of the American natural gas, the USD/RUB currency pair, the M2 monetary aggregate in Russia) on the Gazprom PJSC stock quotes. These multiple linear regression equations are used to develop economic and mathematical models with the projected values of the factors. Materials and Methods . The paper refers to the general and special scientific methods – analysis, synthesis, a monographic method, and statistical methods – graphs, tables, trend spotting, correlation and regression analysis. The choice of independent variables in the correlation and regression analysis was driven by several factors: global natural gas prices determine the fi nancial performance of the Russian energy companies; the revenue of the Russian exporters has long been dependent on the USD/RUB currency pair; security quotes rose at the stock markets due to the monetary policy of central banks which strive to build up the monetary supply. Results. The study developed the equations of multiple linear regressions for the selected four periods with different economic scenarios. This proves the relevancy of the issue under analysis. These equations reflect the dependence of the Gazprom PJSC stock quotes from the prices of the American natural gas, the USD/RUB currency pair, and the money supply in Russia. They could give rise to the economic and mathematical models with the projected values of the analyzed factors and their possible correlations. Conclusion . The economic factors in question could have a positive impact on the Gazprom PJSC stock quotes against a weak Russian ruble and the national energy companies refocusing their attention on other markets. This information could be of use for the economic entities to boost their investment performance.

Large rectangular gas ducts installed in power plants usually need inner supports to ensure their stability. Generally two schemes are used for setting inner supports. One is National Standard Specification (NSS) and the other is an American Combustion Engineering company design criterion (CE). The design level of inner supports in flue pipe has a great effect on flow distribution. In this paper, three kinds of inner supports which are common in power plants are simulated by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Through a comprehensive analysis of their flow fields and pressure, it can be concluded that NSS inner supports which are thinner, vertical to each other and have more rows is the best design scheme among these three kinds of inner supports.

Knowledge’s processes enrich the information bringing value to organizations. These formal or informal, processes increase the value of information and useful knowledge of people and organizations. Therefore, in order to identify good practices that promote the improvement of processes for the implementation of knowledge management in the area of transport hydrocarbon, this exploratory study it perform on ECOPETROL, Colombia's largest oil company. Due to its size, it belongs to 40 largest oil and gas companies in the world´s group and recognize as one of the four major in Latin American. The study target the workshops developed within the Operations and Maintenance teams using the methodology of the Knowledge Assurance Guide. The results show positive impacts identifying best practices that support process improvement in the tactical, strategic and operational levels.

The avant-garde Japanese company Ban'yu Inryoku was formed following the death in 1983 of the inspirational writer and director Shuji Terayama, who has subsequently become a cult figure. This article explores his influence – both limiting and liberating – on the production by one of the founders of the company, his disciple J. A. Seazer, of an experimental musical version of King Lear, as Ria O. Douglas Kerr places the production – seen in England during the Japan Festival of 1991 – within the context of evolving attitudes towards the avant-garde theatrical movement in Japan during the late 'sixties, notably as modified by the national trauma of the gas attack in Tokyo of 1995. Adapting Shakespeare was a break with the Terayama tradition of presenting only works collectively created by the ensemble – and it also made their work more accessible to the intercultural festival circuit. Explicated by the printed synopsis which forms a ‘map’ of the play for its audiences, the production also used Brechtian signboards to signal the titles of scenes, while being predicated also on the ‘representation of the inner and the outer experience’ which was Artaud's perception of Balinese performance. Lear himself was in this sense the entranced dancer, depending on the guidance of his supporters. Douglas Kerr, who explores here the tensions between the cultural elements employed and between the ideological pulls for conservatism and for social change, is currently an advanced PhD student at Stanford University in American Literature. His interests include Performance Poetics and Buddhism in contemporary American poetry.

Due to the rapid trend of “Globalization” to the domestic company; more challenge incurred. In view of it, they all enhance the employee’ s skill and change the organization to the problem-solving. Especially, it is vital to the effect on the Human Resource management and the coaching to the employees from leaders which will be result in the good performance of both employee and organization. We also focus on the effects among the Organization Justice, Psychological Empowerment to Organization commitment and Work satisfaction. Furthermore, we can provide senior management more strategic ideas to build up the High Performance Organization via understanding the relationships among Coaching Behavior, HRM practice, Organization Justice, Work satisfaction, Organization commitment. This case-studied company is the joint venture company (JV) between the biggest gas company in the word and local Chemical Company. Data collected from the questionnaires within the company via email and word files and received available 239 copies. The Pearson and Regression statistical analysis results showed that Coaching Behavior , HRM practices, Organization Justice, Psychological Empowerment have significantly positive effects with the job satisfaction and Organization commitment. The readers can be learn from the case to build up the high performance organization.

In 1938, Hooker Electrochemical confronted a future without its founder when Elon died in a tragic automobile accident. The longtime patriarch was just 68 years old. Hosannas to his leadership piled up in a moving tribute album, which was quickly published as a special edition of the company newsletter, “Hooker Gas.” “Engineer, Industrialist, Patriot, Public Servant, Author, Humanitarian”: Elon Huntington Hooker was all of these things, the tribute declared, and would be sorely missed. Yet while Elon’s passing hit family and friends hard, it did not slow the firm’s extraordinary growth. Indeed, over the next thirty years, Hooker Chemical (as it soon became known) grew at an even more impressive rate than during Elon’s time. By midcentury, the company was a global leader in the production of an astonishing array of chemicals beyond bleaching powder and caustic soda—degreasers, rubbers, explosives, defoliants, plastics, and much more. One measure of its far-reaching reputation came in the late 1940s, when Hooker executive Bjarne Klaussen traveled from Niagara Falls to the South Pacific to watch a new round of atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll. Cleared of its native inhabitants, the tiny island served as Ground Zero for a weapon far more powerful than the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the close of World War II. Klaussen was part of a small delegation from American corporations and universities that had made “special contributions” to the nation’s atomic development. “Hooker played an important role in the Manhattan Project,” the company historian bragged just a few years later (without providing further details, though they probably revolved around chemical igniters and explosives). The company would remain a key player on the Cold War chemical front for years to come. Hooker’s explosive growth during the 1940s and 1950s had a palpable impact on the Love Canal landscape too. For booming production overwhelmed the firm’s on-site disposal capacity. Searching for new ways to deal with this growing problem, Hooker resorted to “inground disposal” at sites beyond the Niagara plant.

Marc Knobel is a French Jew who has devoted his life to fighting neo-Nazism, a fight that has taken him repeatedly to the Internet and American websites. In February 2000, Knobel was sitting in Paris, searching the Web for Nazi memorabilia. He went to the auction site of yahoo.com, where to his horror he saw page after page of swastika arm bands, SS daggers, concentration camp photos, and even replicas of the Zyklon B gas canisters. He had found a vast collection of Nazi mementos, for sale and easily available in France but hosted on a computer in the United States by the Internet giant Yahoo. Two years earlier, Knobel had discovered Nazi hate sites on America Online and threatened a public relations war. AOL closed the sites, and Knobel assumed that a similar threat against Yahoo would have a similar effect. He was wrong. AOL, it turned out, was atypical. Located in the Washington, D.C. suburbs, AOL had always been sensitive to public relations, politics, and the realities of government power. It was more careful than most Internet companies about keeping offensive information off its sites. Yahoo, in contrast, was a product of Silicon Valley’s 1990s bubble culture. From its origins as the hobby of Stanford graduate students Jerry Yang and David Filo, Yahoo by 2000 had grown to be the mighty “Lord of the Portals.” At the time, Yahoo was the Internet entrance point for more users than any other website, with a stock price, as 2000 began, of $475 per share. Yang, Yahoo’s billionaire leader, was confident and brash—he “liked the general definition of a yahoo: ‘rude, unsophisticated, uncouth.’” Obsessed with expanding market share, he thought government dumb, and speech restrictions dumber still. Confronted by an obscure activist complaining about hate speech and invoking French law, Yang’s company shrugged its high-tech shoulders. Mark Knobel was not impressed. On April 11, 2000, he sued Yahoo in a French court on behalf of the International League against Racism and Anti-Semitism and others. Yahoo’s auctions, he charged, violated a French law banning trafficking in Nazi goods in France.

Though the concept of the biomarker emerged from attempts to infer the provenance of petroleum and the incidence of life on the young earth—for all the successes and disappointments of the early studies on Precambrian rocks, lunar dust, and oil shales—it was in the sediments of the deep sea that biomarkers really came into their own. The Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) was initiated in the 1960s by a consortium of American oceanographic research institutions, but institutions in Russia, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany were quick to sign on. In what began as an effort to understand the makeup and dynamics of the earth’s crust and mantle, the DSDP’s special research ship traveled the world’s oceans, drilling thousands of meters into the seafloor to retrieve sediment cores that soon became coveted objects of study for geologists, oceanographers, biologists, paleontologists, and geochemists around the world. When Geoff’s group started analyzing the DSDP sediments in the early 1970s, most of the organic chemists involved with the program were from the oil industry and formed part of the drill ship’s safety program, monitoring the cores as they were brought on deck to ensure that dangerous accumulations of gas or liquid hydrocarbons weren’t being penetrated. But Geoff saw the DSDP as the perfect opportunity to wean his Bristol lab of its dependence on NASA’s Apollo program—a chance to bring his full attention back to Earth and its still largely unexplored realm of fossil molecules. The British Natural Environment Research Council had earmarked a large pot of funding for work on the cores, which would be unencumbered by the narrow commercial goals and secrecy that surrounded the limited offerings from oil-company bore holes. Geoff’s budding Organic Geochemistry Unit would be aligned with a multidisciplinary community of scientists who were all studying the same cores, working cooperatively, and publishing freely. And, unlike the lunar samples, ocean sediments were rife with interesting organic compounds, including many entirely unforeseen structures. Most of the cores consisted of sediments that had been laid down and buried sequentially without ever being subjected to the tectonic turmoil of stretching and subsidence, and the overlying kilometers of cold water had kept their temperatures relatively low.

As the natural gas demand continues to grow globally, optimizing gas pipeline operations becomes a critical imperative for energy companies (Evans July 2005). This is mainly because transmission cost account for 30% of the total cost of production globally (Arash Bazyar 2021). To address this challenge, natural gas pipeline operators increasingly turn to advanced technologies such as machine learning (ML) to optimize their operations, improve efficiency, and reduce costs. This paper presents a compelling case study of a North American energy company that collaborated with a leading cloud service provider to leverage a business intelligence (BI) application backed by ML algorithms to analyze historical pipeline data and optimize gas pipeline operations while minimizing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The objectives of this paper are multi-fold: first, to demonstrate the efficacy of a BI application powered by ML algorithms in optimizing gas pipeline operations. Second, to showcase the transformative journey of the North American energy company in leveraging cloud-enabled ML solutions to achieve substantial operational improvements. This case study offers valuable insights into how ML can revolutionize the traditional pipeline optimization process and deliver tangible business results. Third, to discuss the building blocks of the ML solution deployed. Furthermore, fourth, to educate our readers on potential areas for further research and advancement. We also discuss challenges and considerations the industry may face in the broad adoption of ML applications. To begin, this paper explores the capacity conundrum of industry leaders in the natural gas transportation sector. It sheds light on the existing challenges where operators spend considerable time analyzing data from various sources to assess the operational capabilities of their pipelines. By delving into these challenges, this study provides a comprehensive understanding of the need for innovative approaches such as ML to address these complexities. Following this paper, this paper explores the application of AI/ML solutions in pipeline optimization within the oil and gas sector, highlighting critical use cases and the potential benefits they bring. The paper features a prominent North American energy company that confronted similar challenges in pipeline operations. Through a strategic collaboration with a leading cloud service provider, the company embarked on a digital transformation journey to optimize its pipeline operations using ML technologies. This paper elucidates the methodologies, procedures, and processes involved in successfully implementing ML algorithms and a BI application tailored to the specific needs of the energy company. The results of this case study demonstrate the remarkable outcomes achieved through the integration of ML algorithms and the BI application. The application optimizes gas throughput daily by leveraging historical pipeline data and operator knowledge, enhancing overall operational capability. Statistical models employed in the application enable anomaly detection and system optimization and provide a unified user experience. The Maine Energy Recovery Company is a refuse derived fuel (RDF) waste to energy facility that began commercial operation in 1987. The facility consists of an RDF production operation, two B&W boilers which produce 210,000 lb/hr of steam at 650 psig/750F with a design Furnace Exit Gas Temperature of 1700 F, and a 22 MW steam turbine generator. Since startup, the facility has suffered fireside erosion/corrosion of the waterwalls, superheater, and generator bank hot side sections. Through the years, Maine Energy has made various operational and design changes in order to improve combustion and overall boiler availability. While combustion has improved as evidenced by improved emissions, reduced supplemental fuel usage, and lower ash production, superheater availability has suffered. At the same time reliability of the waterwall and generating bank components have improved. This paper will present a history of Maine Energy’s efforts to improve its superheater availability including a summary of the tube wastage rates for various superheater alloys, as well as Maine Energy’s plans for its superheaters.

Abstract Plunger Lift systems (PLS) have been proven to be successful for decades in North America and extended into traditionally lower productivity well areas. As well production declines and the flowing bottomhole production increases, the velocity required to remove the accumulated liquids from the wellbore falls below critical velocity, therefore requiring the application of a deliquification method. This project aimed to study an unconventional well for plunger lift solution with challenging mechanical conditions and harsh downhole environment. In unconventional areas, selecting the proper Artificial Lift System (ALS) needed to produce huge gas reserves comes with technical challenges. A field case study is provided to review the selected horizontal well for a plunger lift solution with mechanical ID restriction in a currently ongoing full field development for an unconventional reservoir in Middle East. For the operating company, the original plan was to operate it with rod lift system. However, when the liquid production is not too large (<200 Bbl/d) and there is sufficient gas volume and pressure, plunger lift should be evaluated first, therefore postponing the rod lift installation. This paper will describe the process and results of installing a Tapered Progressive Plunger Lift (TPPL) solution in a horizontal with 5,000-ft lateral and downhole temperatures around 300°F. The existing completion design included a casing size reduced from 5-1/2″ to 4-1/2″ and subsequently designed with a reduced tubing string size as well, from 2-7/8″ to 2-3/8″, representing a mechanical restriction of the Internal Diameter (ID) profile. The tailored plunger lift solution was implemented allowing the packered well with a tapered tubing string design to unload liquids in the wellbore without having to pull the tubing. This was accomplished by adapting the PL installation with a tapered Intermediate landing assembly seating at the tubing crossover. This arrangement not only help counteracted the liquid accumulation of each tubing section but also extended the life of the well by minimizing the condensate to oil ratio and water to oil ratio. A secondary benefit was to fine tune the material selection of the downhole equipment for the harsh reservoir environment. The approach used to enable the adequate selection of the ALS will be described by detailing benefits and results of the TPPL application that have efficiently and economically added value to the unconventional well. In a long-term perspective, the implementation of the Tailored Plunger Lift Solutions can adapt successfully to other wells within the area where these types of completions are commonly use thus helping the full development of green unconventional fields.

American Ref-Fuel Company (ARC) spends millions of dollars each year on corrosion related costs in the boilers. The corrosion is caused by chloride salts in the slag that deposit on the boiler tubes, coupled with the high temperatures of flue gas going through the boiler. Corrosion rates are known to be very sensitive to the flue gas temperature and velocity, surface temperature and heat flux through the slag, oxygen in flue gas distribution, etc. These parameters are primarily determined by the firing rate of the boiler, and they are also affected by combustion control and air distribution in the boiler. Some design parameters, such as surface area of refractory, tile, and inconel overlay, also affect the flue gas temperature throughout the boiler, and thereby impact corrosion.

A new WTE (Waste-to-Energy) power plant configuration combining municipal solid waste and gas turbines or landfill gas engines is proposed. The system has two objectives: increase the thermodynamic efficiency of the plant and avoid the corrosion in the MSW (Municipal Solid Waste) boiler caused by high tube metal temperatures. The difference between this concept and other existing configurations, such as the Zabalgarbi plant in Bilbao, Spain, is lower natural gas consumption, allowing an 80% waste contribution to the net energy exported or more. This high efficiency is achieved through four main steps: 1. introducing condensing heat exchangers to capture low temperature heat from the boiler flue gases; the stack temperature can drop to 70°C; 2. high steam temperatures in external superheaters using hot clean gases heated with duct burners; 3. mixing the exhaust gases of a small gas turbine with hot air preheated in a specially designed heat exchangers. The resulting temperature of this gas mixture is almost the same as a standard gas turbine but with the flow similar to that of a large machine with a higher O2 content; 4. After the duct burner and heat exchangers, the oxygen content of the clean gas mixture is still high, nearly 18%, and the temperature is approximately 200°C. The gas is then used as combustion air to the MSW boiler such that all the energy stays in the system. The efficiency can be as high as 33% for the MSW part of the plant and 49% for the natural gas system. Since the natural gas consumption is almost ten times less than the existing designs, it can be replaced by landfill gas or gasified ethanol or biodiesel. Currently an 850 ton/day plant is being designed in Brazil in partnership with a large power company. Other advantages include, self generation of internal power and lower steam superheating temperatures in the MSW boiler. This concept can be used with any grate design.

Hydrocarbons transported in transmission pipelines contain solid particles with micro-attached water. Subjected to flow conditions, these particles may have sufficient density to reach the pipe floor and enable bacteria growth and local Under-Deposit Corrosion (UDC), with this form of corrosion being one of the principal threats to the integrity of oil and gas transmission pipelines. NACE International has published a variety of UDC related standard practices to manage corrosion in the oil industry such NACE 61114, but few of them are representative of, or applicable to, low water cut hydrocarbon transmission pipelines. Further, there are presently no industry recognized key performance indicators (KPIs) suitable for managing UDC in low water cut hydrocarbon transmission pipelines. Enbridge (the “Company”) operates North America’s largest interconnected liquid hydrocarbon transmission pipeline network. For the purposes of this paper, when the word ‘transmission’ is used to modify ‘crude oil’, ‘hydrocarbons’, or ‘pipelines’, it implies medium to long distance transport (100’s to 1000’s of km) as well as clean, “refinery-ready” crude oil (oil containing less than 0.5% sediment and water). This quality of oil renders it generally non-corrosive at pipeline operating conditions. However, if water wet particulates accumulate on the pipe floor, it can lead to UDC. The Company collects sludge samples produced during pigging operations on a regular basis to establish the composition of these materials and quantify bacterial population/activity. These solids represent an amalgamation of material removed from the pipe floor, and thus can be used as an indicator of the UDC threat in the pipeline. This paper builds upon previous work of the Company [1] by considering a larger data set in order to generate a more meaningful assessment of bacteria population/activity and provide better correlations with crystalline compounds, water content and elements found in the sludge. This paper presents these data and associated statistical analysis, and proposes KPIs for evaluating the UDC threat based on numerous variables, including in-line inspection Magnetic Flux Leak (MFL) data (through signal to signal corrosion growth rates), sludge analysis, flow conditions and pipeline operation; this paper also suggests mitigation activities and intervals relative to these KPIs. Personnel involved in pipeline integrity management (e.g. field operations, technical and management staff) may find the concepts, strategies and correlations presented herein to be useful in developing their own UDC management programs.

These same weather conditions degrade combustion turbine capacity and heat rate. Cooling combustion turbine inlet air increases its density and improves combustion turbine performance. MS7001B engine was installed by Lincoln Electric System, in Lincoln, Nebraska (U.S.A.), in an EPRI and American Public Power Associated supported and co-funded demonstration project. Detailed design and construction documents for the project were developed by Burns & McDonnell Engineering Company.

Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are major sources of natural resource consumption and environmental impacts such as greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. At the same time, MSMEs make up a large part of the value chains of multinational and publicly traded companies, and thereforeoffer a unique point of entry to improve value chain environmental management practices while simultaneously promoting economic development in the region. In this vein, the Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF), a member of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Group, aims to improve MSME competitiveness through increased efficiency of natural resource inputs, reduction of air and water pollution, gaining higher prices for products that are certified through reputable green certifications, and increasing MSME sales by strengthening their positioning within the value chains of large companies with sustainability commitments. To inform the MIF's strategic planning on how technical assistance can be best structured to improve the competitiveness of MSMEs in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region through the promotion of best practices in natural resource management and environmental impact reduction, a study was undertaken by Trucost. As part of this study, Trucost's patented environmental extended input-output (EEIO) model was used to identify five economic sectors in LAC that are associated with the highest environmental implications regarding inputs (natural resource use) and outputs (environmental impacts) from production processes, specifically relating to the sectors' value chains. For each of these sectors, three large companies were identified for a more focused analysis of their activities relating to the management of value chain environmental impacts. A case study was developed for one large company per sector to document these in detail. This document summarizes the key findings and lessons learned from the case studies, indicating value chain sectors that can be targeted to most efficiently reduce value chain environmental impacts, as well as ways in which this targeting can be done.
