Frame, John R. "America and the Scottish Left : the impact of American ideas on the Scottish Labour Movement from the American Civil War to World War One." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 1998. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk:80/webclient/DeliveryManager?pid=216938.

Full text
Abstract:
The years 1861 to 1921 witnessed the development of contacts between the labour movements of Britain and the United States. Scottish socialists, trade unionists and social reformers contributed to this activity. Transatlantic labour co-operation began in Scotland in the 1860s when the Civil War in the USA provoked an intense public discussion of American society. This interest was further stimulated by the accounts of emigrants to the republic and, in particular, by the views of Alexander McDonald, leader of the miners' union. The establishment of ties between the mining communities of Scotland and American, via an emigration scheme and through McDonald's lecture tours, inaugurated a period of American influence on the Scottish labour movement. Left-wing reactions in the United States to the growth of capitalism from the 1880s to the First World War furnished sections of this movement with a series of organisational models. Socialist and reform theories, forged in a country which was industrialising at a furious pace, were transmitted to Britain where Scots transformed them for their own purposes. Beginning with the ideas of Henry George, and closely followed by those of the Knights of Labor, these concepts advanced the cause of socialism within the Scottish labour movement. This process culminated with the experiments of the Scottish De Leonists. They instituted the Socialist Labour Party of Great Britain in the image of Daniel De Leon's American SLP and, following the birth in Chicago of the Industrial Workers of the World, brought the theory of industrial unionism to Scotland. De Leonism played an important role in the rise of socialism on Clydeside in the early years of the twentieth century until the Bolshevik revolution in Russia, and the growing mass appeal of the Labour Party, heralded the decline of transatlantic socialist unity.

Streator, Campbell. ""Pig-Sawce" and Politics: The History of Barbecue as a Political Institution in the United States." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2018. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/1920.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the history of barbecue as a political institution in the United States. It pulls from a wide variety of cultural and political sources to trace the story of barbecue’s evolution in America from cooking structure to social gathering, and addresses barbecue’s varied political meanings and implementations from before the American Revolution through the twentieth century. Along the way, it discusses the ways in which barbecue as a political institution has been used to cultivate an American identity, played a role in the development of personality driven politics in the United States, and found itself at the center of debates over race and equality in America.

Hu, Yu. "American Spread Option Models and Valuation." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2013. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3598.

Full text
Abstract:
Spread options are derivative securities, which are written on the difference between the values of two underlying market variables. They are very important tools to hedge the correlation risk. American style spread options allow the holder to exercise the option at any time up to and including maturity. Although they are widely used to hedge and speculate in financial market, the valuation of the American spread option is very challenging. Because even under the classic assumptions that the underlying assets follow the log-normal distribution, the resulting spread doesn't have a distribution with a simple closed formula. In this dissertation, we investigate the American spread option pricing problem. Several approaches for the geometric Brownian motion model and the stochastic volatility model are developed. We also implement the above models and the numerical results are compared among different approaches.

Thesis, Linköpings universitet, Produktionsekonomi, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-110875.

Full text
Abstract:
In this master thesis we have examined the possibility of pricing multiple American options, on an underlying asset with discrete dividends, with a finite difference method. We have found a good and stable way to price one American option by solving the BSM PDE backwards, while also calculating the Greeks of the option with automatic differentiation. The list of Greeks for an option is quite extensive since we have been using a local volatility surface. We have also tried to find a way to price several American options simultaneously by solving a forward PDE. Unfortunately, we haven't found any previous work that we could use with our local volatility surface, while still keeping down the computational time. The closest we got was to calculate the value of a compound option in a forward mode, but in order to use this to value an American option, we needed to go through an iterative process which calculated a forward or backward European PDE in every step.

Hechenleitner, Vega Paulina. "Biogeography and systematics of South American Vicia (Leguminosae)." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2015. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk:80/webclient/DeliveryManager?pid=225711.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents the first monographic taxonomic treatment of Vicia in South America, in which 20 native species are recognized. In addition to an identification key, the taxonomic account provides full synonymy, and for each species a detailed description, distribution map, notes on distribution, habitat, phenology and an IUCN conservation assessment. Vicia buchtienii P.Hechenleitner is described as new, V. bidentata Hook. is reinstated as a separate species, and the new combination of V. bonariensis (Burkart) P.Hechenleitner is made. Fifteen names are newly reduced to synonymy, 23 lectotypes are chosen, and one neotype is proposed. Four of the 20 species are considered endangered. South American Vicia species are assigned to section Australes. Based on Bayesian and parsimony analysis of DNA sequence data from chloroplast (matK and psba-trnH) and nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences representing 50% of the species of Vicia in South America, sect. Australes is shown to be paraphyletic. If classification is to reflect monophyly, sect. Australes should be expanded to include three north and central American species that are nested within it. The phylogenetic results suggest a single origin of Vicia in South America resulting from long-distance dispersal from North America. A densely sampled species-level phylogeny of sect. Australes was estimated using nuclear (ITS) and chloroplast (psbA-trnH) regions analysed using Bayesian and parsimony approaches. Fourteen of the 20 South American Vicia species were included, many represented by multiple accessions, resulting in the most comprehensive phylogenetic study of the section to date. Vicia minutifora D.Dietr. is the probable sister to the remaining species in sect. Australes, and the lack of geographic structure in the phylogeny implies repeated dispersal events within South America. By revealing three probable new species from Peru and Bolivia, the phylogeny indicates the utility of combining phylogenetic and morphological analyses in the delimitation of closely related species.

Rennie, David Alan. ""Varying offensives" : American writers' representations of World War I." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2017. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk:80/webclient/DeliveryManager?pid=233979.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the past thirty years the dominant trend in studies of American World War I literature has been to recognise the plurality of experience represented in American writing connected with the First World War, beyond that registered in the canonical works of white male modernists. Scholars have identified literary representations of the various gendered, political, intellectual, and racial subgroups that were affected by World War I in America. This growing interest in the experiences of diverse socio-political constituencies has, unfortunately, often reductively classified authors as belonging to a particular category of identity. Accordingly, the present work challenges this trend in three distinct ways. I argue, firstly, that individual authors held and represented complex and nuanced responses to the war. I propose, secondly, that writers expressed these views not just in the key works for which they are remembered, but across multiple literary media, including novels, magazine fiction, film scripts, book reviews, history works, prefaces, and autobiographies. Finally, I maintain a focus throughout on the provisionality of authors' responses to the war, arguing that these changed over time as a consequence of authors' intellectual and professional developments.
