Vong, Tze-ngai, and 黃子毅. "Casino boom in Macau: exploring casino liberalization's impact on Macau residents' sense of place and theirsatisfaction and support for casino development." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2012. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B49858798.

Full text
Abstract:
Since casino liberalization, Macau has been undergoing metaphoric changes that are fundamental, rapid, and far-reaching. This poses a challenge to Macau people to cope with life changing circumstances to the extent of rediscovering their hometown which have changed profoundly as evident by the city‘s ever-changing skyline. Having said so, this study aims to explore the effects of large-scale casino development on Macau residents‘ sense of place, and how their changing sense of place determines their support for casino development. To achieve this study purpose, three interrelated research objectives are laid down for the study. They are (1) to assess the impact of casino liberalization on Macau society, (2) to describe Macau residents’ sense of place amid the casino boom, and (3) to delineate the structural relationship between casino impact, sense of place, place satisfaction, and support for casino development. By using a purely quantitative approach based on a comprehensive resident survey, the study identified both positive and negative casino impact factors as affecting Macau people economically, socially, and environmentally. More importantly, these casino impact factors were also found to exhibit significant predictive power in explaining respondents‘ sense of place intensity, therefore empirically validating a posited relationship between the impact of casino development and inhabitants’ sense of place. The study also found that respondents’ sense of place carried obvious connotations of modernity and exquisiteness because respondents were using everyday vocabularies such as ‘rich’, ‘lively’, ‘developed’, and ‘unique’ to express their perceptions of the new Macau. This brief glossary of words, which characterizes successful urban development, was also found to associate strongly with their sense of place assessments. Finally, the study validated an integrated conceptual model within which the sense of place construct assumes a decisive role in affecting place satisfaction and support for casino development. The contribution of this study lies in the fact it has brought to our attention residents’ sense of place as an important determinant for the success of any large-scale tourism project such as casino development. This study has also provided a new breath to the traditional casino impact studies by taking a new look at an old problem through a cross-disciplinary perspective.

Full text
Abstract:
The history of public housing in Macau started in 1928. Yet, the performance level of the public housing sector is relatively lower compared to the nearby cities, whereas their public housing sectors were commenced at a later stage. The return of sovereignty of Macau in 1999 becomes the major turning point of the city. Since then, the economic landscape of the city has dramatically changed by the liberalization of the gaming industry in 2002. The vibrant economy has directly led to an upsurge of the real estate market, resulting an unaffordable private housing market. In addition, the city has also initiated the demand of more public housing by the local residents. With the sudden increase in the demand of more public housing units, the government has decided to launch the “19,000 Public Housing Units” Programme. With this phenomenon recently occurred in Macau, it will be worth visiting the current performance level of the public housing sector in Macau; aiming to find out if the public housing sector has met the expectations of different stakeholders, with quantity, quality and affordability as the assessment criteria. Negative results have been shown while assessing the criteria of quantity and quality and a positive result has been reflected for affordability. After knowing the weaknesses of the public housing sector, it will be worth looking into the possible factors influencing its performance with land supply and urban planning as the critical components. Recommendations to improve the performance of the public housing sector through better land and planning policies have been established to conclude this dissertation.

Hoi, Lok-him, and 許樂謙. "Linking the world heritage and industrial waterfront: urban revitalization of Porto Interior, Macao." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2010. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B47124805.

Full text
Abstract:
This design thesis is to provide an innovative design concept and approach to revitalize the area of Porto Interior. In this design, a piece of industrial waterfront in Porto Interior of Macao has been taken to revitalize the old town Macao and to enhance the protection of the Historic Centre of Macao at the same time. This design thesis is divided into 3 sections: 1) surveying, 2) planning and 3) landscape design section to show the generation of the design process. Site selection, problem findings and forecasting are supported by the surveying section. This information supports the generation of landscape planning and design concept for the Porto Interior waterfront. The main design idea is to connect the world heritage of Macao to the water edge and emphasize the linkage to other waterfronts in Macao in order to build up an entire public open space system. The “Connection” idea is to re?link the world heritage of Macao and Porto Interior waterfront in physical and mental way, as well as tangible and intangible way. In the whole design process, nine heritage paths are created in order to provide a physical linkage between the Historic Centre of Macao to Porto Interior. Main landscape areas?the celebrate nodes are generated by the intersection point between the heritage paths and the waterfront. Those nodes contain with different functions, such as plaza, garden, infrastructure, leisure and entertainment space and their design are inspired by the daily experience, story and element of the Historic Centre of Macao. Those inspirations are captured or interpreted into the nodes in mental and intangible way as well. This design idea and approach will shorten the distance between the world heritage and Porto Interior. At the same time, it provides a consistence experience to visitors and recalls visitors’ memory. The new design for Porto Interior is able to improve the living and business environment by providing higher quality public open space. Besides, vehicular circulation is improved as the design thesis proposes the harbor tunnel to link up the south and north of Macao and the light rail public transport system, moreover, pedestrian circulation is enhanced since the share street concept is promoted and the main carriageway between community and waterfront is narrowed, increasing the accessibility and adaptability from the residential area to waterfront public open space. “Connection” design vision is fully addressed in the waterfront design of Porto Interior, Macao. The new design waterfront is able to be a unique public open space to Macao, reflecting the spirit of the Historic Centre of Macao and blending with the history of industrial waterfront simultaneously.

Abstract:
After experiencing changes and adapting to them, Macau establishes a unique identity of harmonious coexistence of different cultures, religions, people and life styles. And this unique identity became one of the major characters that fulfill the criteria for inscribing into UNESCO’s World Heritage List. World heritage site: The Historic Centre of Macau is a brand name in Macau’s tourism now. But not every building is lucky to have adequate respect. Cemetery of St. Michael the Archangel, located inside the historic centre of Macau and closed to St. Paul’s ruins, as well as many other heritage sites, is an example. The values of historic cemeteries are underestimated. In order to protect the container of history – cemeteries, conservation must be done. There is no doubt about that. However, interpretation of the cemeteries is equally important. With better interpretations of the cemeteries and people buried inside, we can reconstruct the society in 19th century, and even more. The routes suggested in Chapter 4 only served as examples. Visitor can imagine a society which all these historic figures were living. They interacted with each other. They influenced each other. And they changed the society. If there was no cemeteries, or if we did not have good conservation of the cemeteries, how can we provide this interpretation of society in a particular period of time? Proposing a historic walk is one of the best ways to have better interpretations to the cemeteries. Through the historic cemetery walk, the values of each cemetery can be appreciated by visitor and it can also bring the cemeteries life. The rich contents of the cemeteries are always waiting for us to find out.

Abstract:
Human papillomavirus (HPV), a family of viruses with more than 40 genotypes is known to infect genital tract of males and females. High-risk HPV including genotypes 16, 18 can cause cervical cancer while low-risk HPV including genotypes 6, 11 can cause benign or low grade cervical lesions and genital warts. Considering HPV infection is the most common sexually transmitted infection worldwide, as well as in Macao, with prevalence up to 8.1%, and given that cervical cancer is the top ten most frequent female cancer which causes high burden in our health care system, it is important to have a comprehensive intervention for control HPV and cervical cancer. Since the HPV vaccine for preventing cervical cancer has been available in Macao, it is worth to know the willingness to be vaccinated among target population. Base on findings from previous studies, the parental attitudes and acceptance is the key factor of vaccination for young girls. Other potential factors, such as the HPV knowledge, vaccine safety and efficacy, cost, the age of daughter and the physician’s attitudes, may also affect parental acceptance. Given that no previous study on this topic has been conducted, this study is aimed to understand the knowledge, attitudes and acceptability of HPV vaccination, and to explore and identify the affecting factors for acceptance among school girls and their parents. A school-based simple cluster random sampling method was used. Data was collected by anonymous self-administrated questionnaires among 574 school girls aged at 12-22 and 702 parents aged at 30-65. About 47% of the school girls had heard of HPV and 88.3% had heard of HPV vaccine, while 57.1% of parents had heard of HPV and 83.2% had heard of HPV vaccine. Although the HPV-related knowledge was poor among young girls and their parents, 92% of girls indicated a positive intention to be vaccinated for herself and 88% parents would willing to consent daughter to be vaccinated if the HPV vaccine became in routine immunization. However, the parental vaccination acceptability for daughters decreased to 40% and only 30% of mothers would willing to accept for themselves, if they had to pay a full course for three doses of HPV vaccine. About 97% of school girls and 95% of parents supported that HPV vaccine should be included in government immunization programme. We also found that young girls and parents are more favor in later HPV vaccination rather than vaccination at recommended age. Cost is the dominant affecting factor in determining parental acceptability of HPV vaccination. In addition, daughter’s age, vaccine safety concern, Pap smear attendance and HPV knowledge are significantly associated with HPV vaccine acceptance. It may be worthwhile to further investigate the reasons for the delay vaccination among the young adolescent girls and among their parents, to examine if any underlying factors were unexpressed.

Abstract:
To analysis whether the Macau International Airport (MIA) can be a supplementary freight runway for the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), this paper provides an overview of the airport system regarding air freight in Hong Kong and Macau. The paper is done in the context of operational, managerial and institutional. Through understanding the nature of air freight and multi-airport system, this paper will deeply analyze the transport connection network in between Hong Kong and Macau and in between the HKIA and the MIA and this paper found that the existing poor transport connection network in between Hong Kong and Macau largely affect the MIA as a successful supplementary freight runway for the HKIA. Beside, through analyzing the airlines and freight forwarders’ choice on airports in between HKIA and MIA and the inter-relationship in between airport, airport operators, airlines and freight forwarders/shippers, this paper found that the HKIA has absolute advantage over the MIA. Thus, the finding of the paper concluded that an efficient inter-modal aircrafts’ equipments system in between Hong Kong and Macau must be built. And, a single joint company managed and operated by Airport Authority of Hong Kong (AAHK) and CAM should be set up to take in charge on MIA in order to allocate supplementary air freight from the HKIA to the MIA.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, I use case study methodology to document the experiences of Latinas in sex work in Hong Kong and Macau. By investigating the identities of sex workers in these locations, I analyze risk behaviors related to each identity. I employ two theoretical frameworks; the first to examine the reasons for engaging in sex work, identities and risk behaviors; and the second to examine the women’s perception of the nature of sex work. The first framework consists of four explanatory models for analyzing sex work: a pathological model, a social dislocation and criminal subculture model, an economic position and poverty model, as well as a gender and male violence model. Of these, the economic position and poverty model seems to be a better fit with the background stories of most of the women in the study, who came from a poor socio-economic background. They took up sex work and migrated to other countries for economic reasons. However, I suggest that the agency of the women was not sufficiently taken into account by either of the models, including the economic position and poverty model. Using the second theoretical framework, I studied the women’s perception of the nature of sex work through the lenses of various feminist theories, including radical feminism, socialist feminism, Marxist feminism, liberal feminism and existentialist feminism. In looking at a systemic societal interpretation, radical, socialist and Marxist feminism views of oppression seemed justified because in most of the cases, sex work could be interpreted as a result of a patriarchal system and class conflict. At the individual level, the liberal and existentialist feminism views fit with the interviews because the women regarded sex work as empowering in view of their former poverty situations. Each of the women in the study maintained different work and private identities; and each of these identities could be associated with risk behaviors for themselves, for the clients, and for their families (especially spouses and/or boyfriends). The risks both sex workers and the local population faced as a result of the combination of criminalization of sex work and the lack of proper social services (medical, educational, and security), included violence, drug and alcohol abuse, and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS. In addition, sex workers were at high risks of suffering psychological trauma. The findings indicated that to avoid a culture of violence and insecurity, sex work is in need of a deeper understanding and policies that would enable better protection for sex workers, clients and the general population.

This concept is warmly discussed in economic perspective on providing a wide range of general public services. The private sector which involved in the public services work, it helps release public sector’s finance pressure on funds and reduce the risks on conducting the works. When this PPP concept applied into conservation works, government and private sector utilize resource they have and cooperate with each other to realize ultimate work. In general, PPP is applied in the conservation on government owned property and work for public interest. The scale of the project is typically large and last for a long time. The private sectors which join in the work are organizations at most. It is rarely to see government-individual cooperation in PPP mode. Such cooperation is encouraged, since a successful conservation work is not judged by project scale and length of work, even money spending, but the social continuum to the public. Therefore, the key issue addressed by this dissertation is to documentary the conservation work undertaken in a teahouse in Macao, especially focusing on the PPP work in process. The purpose is to reveal a successful conservation practice applied PPP in a small scale, private owned property, an individual as private sector participated in conservation work. The dissertation examines historical, cultural and social backgrounds of the teahouse building and approaches primary source by interviewing with stakeholders on their comments and opinions. After collecting information and analyzing results, a framework on judging the success of PPP work is generated at the end which makes this research valuable and unique. The research work could be used as a reference for future study on PPP work with project characteristics like the case discussed in this dissertation.
