Abstract:
Eiko & Koma's 2006 piece Cambodian Stories: An Offering of Painting and Dance offers an opportunity to analyze the ways gender, the nation, and the global are choreographed and represented on an American stage. Gender is thoroughly implicated in each of the main themes raised by the piece: history (both personal and geo-political), Asian identity, and the relationship between visual art and the performing body. In what ways does this intercultural, intergenerational, and multidisciplinary work complicate our understanding of gender and the nation in the age of globalization? How can a performance such as Cambodian Stories be viewed as a site of (non-Western) feminist knowledge production? Might the movements of Eiko & Koma alongside nine young Cambodian painters be evidence of an agency not visible through the gaze of Western feminist theory?

Destacamos o papel do Brasil nesses processos.

Abstract:
Analysis of Vertical Axis of two Extratropical Cyclones in South America A B S T R A C TExtratropical cyclones (EC) are low pressure systems that occur in mid latitudes (ML) throughout the year. CEs are widely studied phenomena since they are usually associated to events of intense precipitation, storms and large variations of temperature. These systems are initially identified on surface, however, they are also observed up to tropopause. This work analyzes the vertical structure of the life cycle of two EC formed on December 2012 and June 2014. Grid point data (0.5 ° x 0.5 °) from the Climate Forecast System Version 2 / National Center for Atmospheric Research (CFSv2 / NCAR) were used to identify and obtain the longitudinal lag of the pressure centers on the surface and in high levels. Both cases presented: greater lag – longitudinal difference between upper and lower levels due to westward vertical tilt of the axis system – during their development, similarity in the period of occurrence and in the lowest value of central pressure, as well as in the deepening of the cyclone being greater than 24 hPa in 24 hours. In winter (summer) the cyclone obtained a larger (smaller) lag and intensified less (more), suggesting no relationship between the inclination of the vertical axis and the cyclone intensification. The westward vertical tilt was more (less) pronounced in winter (summer) case, besides presenting a behavior less (more) rectilinear until it is occluded. In both cases the most intense cyclonic vorticity was slightly east from vertical axis, being closer of the axis in summer case. Keywords: baroclinic instability; axis of the trough; vertical tilt.

Abstract:
Choreographers have begun experimenting with artist-driven archives using digital technologies, exhibitions and installations, and live performance as a way to generate new work from their own archival materials and increase access to their body of work for audiences. This article focuses on three recent artist-driven archive projects by notable American choreographers Eiko & Koma, Bebe Miller Company, and Jennifer Monson. Drawing on interviews with the choreographers as well as on analyses of the three projects, I suggest that these projects' most important contribution is the idea that archives are not separate from a choreographer's body of work, but are indeed a part of his or her creative process and artistic production.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to estimate the effect of the combined (Federal and state) estate, inheritance, and gift (EIG) tax burden per decedent on the number of firms in the USA. Design/methodology/approach – Estimates are based on a longitudinal panel of 50 American states from 1988 to 2006. Findings – The paper finds that the growth in the EIG tax burden per decedent significantly reduces the growth in the number of firms, especially small firms. The higher dissolution rate among small firms can be attributed to the asymmetric liquidity effect, which limits the ability of small business owners to raise the funds needed to pay the estate tax without liquidating their estates. Practical implications – The estimates suggest that the reductions in EIG taxes, brought about by the passage of 2001 EGTRRA, have lead to a higher growth in the number of firms, ceteris paribus. Social implications – As of this writing, the future of the Federal estate tax looks uncertain. Policymakers should note that the estate tax lowers competition and economic growth, which hurts both the poor and the rich. Originality/value – This study is the first to examine the impact of the combined (Federal and state) EIG tax burden on the number of firms using state-level panel data.

Abstract:
Throughout the Cold War the task of winning “hearts and minds” around the world was of great importance to Soviet and American leaders. Both sides fought a cultural Cold War via radio waves, television transmissions, propa-ganda, and other forms of psychological pressure. A number of recent books that draw on declassified U.S. government records have provided valuable in-sights into the American side of the cultural Cold War. The U.S. government employed military, political, diplomatic, and cultural means to influence for-eign and domestic opinion. The study of this phenomenon requires interdis-ciplinary methodological approaches. Diplomatic historians need to integrate the cultural and propaganda issues into their narratives, and cultural histori-ans need to pay greater heed to the themes raised in diplomatic historical accounts.

Abstract:
Dance
M.A.
Asian-American dance study is an integration of dance studies and Asian-American studies. The existence of social and political stereotypes on Asian-American dancers often categorizes them into an oriental labeling. The labeling of Asian-American dancers based on their ethnicity and their culture’s history in the United States and not considering the artists’ intent and the nature of their works cause this orientalism bias. Due to lack of researches in the past, older generations of Asian-American dancers in the United States fell victim to this oriental labeling. Anything that the public did not seem to understand often led them to believe what they were seeing was foreign. It is not about the issue of racism that this study intends to bring, but rather this study will focus on the Asian-American dancers’ place of belonging in the American society. Eiko & Koma, two renown Asian-American dancers, have an extensive performance career throughout their lives traveling from Japan to Europe in the early 1970s and eventually settling down in the United States in 1976. Eiko & Koma witnessed through the social, economic, and political changes in the United States from the mid-1970s to present. This research will focus on the perceptions on Asian-American dancers by the American society both in the past and the present and address the issues that revolve around them primarily through the works of Eiko & Koma and their career history.

Abstract:
Choreography inherently theorizes a relationship between bodies and space. My research pushes beyond the reach of the dancing body to the idea that choreography serves as a nexus of the politics of place and space, constructing a multiplicity of inter-relationships among bodies, sites, and technologies. In my dissertation on the US-based Japanese dancers, Eiko & Koma, I argue that the pair's choreography does exactly this, effecting as a result new spaces—which I term spaces apart—where alternatives to the dominant society may be rehearsed and entrenched binaries such as nature/culture and east/west may be challenged. By honing in on what kinds of spaces are generated by particular choreographic practices and to what ends. I propose a new framework for examining choreography that could be extended to artists in other fields, one that is not based in chronological or biographical (and thus historical) accounts, but one that takes space as its literal and metaphorical point of departure. This is a crucial new methodology because it illuminates recurring cycles and clusters of focus in Eiko & Koma's work, something that traditional accounts fail to grasp. In the dissertation, I establish four different types of spaces apart generated by Eiko & Koma's choreography, including spaces for mourning, reparation, interfacing with nature, and intercultural alliances. I analyze key dances from across the duo's repertoire alongside selected places that resonate with the choreography in order to elucidate the qualities and effects of each space apart. I then examine each space apart in the context of a larger grouping of dances, demonstrating how Eiko & Koma have adapted and regenerated particular spaces apart over the course of their four decades-long collaboration. My project is centered on the study of 24 stage, site, and video dances by the pair, representing approximately half of their body of work. The analyses I undertake draw from Dance Studies, Asian American Studies, Japanese Studies, and interdisciplinary theories of space and place. My work on Eiko & Koma builds on pioneering studies on Asian American performance in order to expand the field to include research on dance. I contend that Eiko & Koma's unique choreography provides an analytic lens through which to examine Asian and Asian American performance in the context of globalization, and demonstrates changing strategies for addressing questions of nationality, identity, diaspora, location, and intercultural collaboration.

Abstract:
Abstract Increasing the recovery of textiles from municipal solid waste (MSW) is important for improving environmental sustainability. In 2015, over 10.5 million tons of textile waste was landfilled, which is 7.6% of total landfilled MSW according to the U.S. EPA. For all materials, recycling in the U.S. has increased over the past decade to 25.8% of the weight of the waste generated, textile recycling is below this level at 15.3%. This research quantifies the availability of used textiles by material type from Goodwill of Delaware (Goodwill-DE), a thrift store franchise, between 2012 and 2014. It examines the feasibility of recycling this amount of available discarded textiles, specifically cotton, into U.S. industrial subsectors that traditionally use new cotton textiles. A hybrid product model was created using EIO-LCA to compare economic and environmental impacts in the cut and sew apparel, airplane and automotive seating, upholstered furniture, and textile bag manufacturing industrial subsectors. Economic impacts on supply purchases and profits were considered. Environmental impacts in energy use and CO2 equivalent emissions were examined. As a result, utilizing all of Goodwill-DE’s annual discarded cotton textiles by the cut and sew apparel industrial subsectors would have positive impacts in terms of supply purchase and energy savings and reduction in CO2 equivalent emissions, but negative impacts on profits. Supply purchase savings are greater than the profit loss, resulting in a net economic gain for the cut and sew apparel industrial subsectors. Of the seven industrial subsectors considered, the U.S. cut and sew apparel industries would benefit the most from utilizing used cotton textiles.
