The unfolding of the work of art in space-time of life can be seen in many modern and contemporary avant garde works. The completion of these works takes place in the simultaneity of events in the world, being chance and uncertainty key elements in the outcome of the work. Thus, the artwork is open to the field of possibilities to the randomness of tangible reality, and its shape in a constant change. The meanings, then, established themselves in the multitude of events, where the desire to have a closed form is dissolved in constant becoming. And that makes these works an event, due to its realization on the surface of spatiality-temporality. From Musique d ameublement of Erik Satie, circa 1917-1920, and Untitled (Mirrored Cubes) by Robert Morris, 1965, we will try to understand the concept of event introduced by these two works, as will be discussed that concept triggered by other artists, which somehow relate to the two cited, for example, John Cage. And being the music of Satie made to be played in environments belonging to daily life, between conversations and actions occurring, and the mirrored cubes of Morris occur during the experience of the observer, while circling, art is performed, then, as an event in which its developments now are subject to chance.

Full textIn Madagascar, solid wood is the most material used for interior joinery and furniture. Therefore, some species, primarily the precious wood species are scarce and overexploited. However, forest resources offer a large selection of woody species (about 4220) whose the potential value is not known. In this context, the question arises on how to choose a species for a given application. The aim of this thesis was to propose an approach, considering the properties of wood material, for the choice of alternative species for Rosewood for an application in furniture, this, in order to improve the valorization of the important wood resources of the country and to help to reduce the pressure on these precious wood species. Thus, sixteen species have been studied, namely: Rosewood (which is the reference wood species) and fifteen other species. Nine of them were indigenous species in Madagascar and six were reforestation species. The overall approach was based on the evaluation of the potential of these species and the comparison of these species with Rosewood. Thus, the different properties of the wood species (physical and mechanical properties, color, machining and finishing properties) have been characterized, and a standardized criterion, which we call "performance index", was defined. This is a criterion which allows assessing the performance of species for a given application. In this approach, the preference of the consumers has also been considered and then included in the analysis. The results showed that the Rosewood has good properties everywhere, especially for machining properties. Concerning the influence of physical and mechanical properties of wood on the machining and finishing properties, relationships have been established only between the physical and mechanical properties and machining properties. Finally, as regards to the studied properties, the performance indexes were used to identify the potential alternative species, namely Teak and Eucalyptus citriodora (two exotic species) and Sohihy (indigenous species)
Galleni, Daniele. "L’atelier artistico della famiglia Coppedè." Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018AIXM0313.
Full textThis dissertation aims to discover history, context, international success, promotional strategies and final decline of the La Casa artistica atelier, led in Florence by the several members of the Coppedè family. Created in 1873 by the householder Mariano as an atelier for wood sculpture, carving, furniture and interior decoration, it reaches an extraordinary reputation lasting several decades, becoming moreover the professional training place for all Mariano’s sons that will become artists: Gino and Adolfo, who will follow a career as architects, and Carlo, who devote himself to painting. The story of the paternal atelier is connected to his sons’careers, creating a sort of alliance bringing to many joint commissions in Italy and in foreign countries thanks to a rich and cosmopolitan clientele, until his decline in the Thirties. The essay will focus on the connection between the Coppedè family atelier ant Florentine artistic landscape, where it works and grows, starting from framing the situation of the wood carving art during the years following the Italian Unification, when Mariano begins his activity. Three exemplary cases are displayed, in order to show the influence that the city has on the atelier.A similar way is used in the following chapter, dedicated to the international spread of the Coppedè atelier, beginning with the analysis of the fascination that the city of Florence and the art of the Renaissance have on among the sophisticated travelers, especially Anglo-Saxons one. This sort of a myth influences the artistic craftsmanship pf the city in several ways, causing different marketing strategies in order become a part of a similar commercial circuit

Full textDuring the second half of the 19th century, the upholsterer-decorator was a key figure in interior decoration. This thesis takes a cross-disciplinary approach, examining both the socio-economic environment of the profession and the creative history of its members. As a furniture dealer and decorator, the upholsterer designs, manufactures and installs the entire interior decor. This includes drapes, curtains, carpets and upholstery for seats, beds and fireplaces. As well as studying the economic, technical and social aspects of the profession and its organisation, our thesis analyses the work and production of upholsterers, from the introduction of fantasy and comfort to the attempts at revival at the turn of the 20th century. We look at their role in prescribing taste through the Universal Exhibitions and, in particular, the changes in their industry as a result of competition from cabinetmakers and department stores. Upholsterers were specialists in the use of textiles, and their work was quickly associated with the abundance of draperies and fringes. Yet behind the criticism levelled at the end of the 19th century at the supposed excesses of their work lies a rich and varied output. This study sheds new light on the decorative ensembles of these upholsterers and their artistic practice at the heart of a rapidly changing furniture industry
Courtin, Nicolas. "L’art d’habiter : l’ameublement des hôtels particuliers à Paris au XVIIe siècle." Paris 4, 2007. http://www.theses.fr/2007PA040190.
Full textUsing a corpus of 24 hôtels and 55 related furniture inventories drawn up between 1610 and 1716, we compare for the first time archives with original buildings, furniture and pictures, in order to understand the way of living in these specific great houses. Layouts are specified, pointing out a real variety of uses. By examining the relations between furniture and architectural envelopes, we highlight the great mobility of objects, and the rise of the notion of decorative coherence. Furniture estimations allow us to present, type by type, the invaluable informations of these first-hand descriptions, updating today’s knowledge of European furniture placed in Paris interiors. This study brings out a great variety in uses, types, materials, colours, and prices, evoking cosy interiors, more or less sumptuous according to one’s taste and choice between public and private spheres

Full textThis cross-study of the European forest, the production and the different sorts of wood, reveals the importance of wood in European furniture design in the period from the end of the Second World War until the beginning of the eighties. The furniture design of European countries such as Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, France and Italy has been studied. The sensorial aspect of wood as well as its symbolism has also been explored. Two countries, France and Denmark, have been put forward as they are particularly revealing of two different approaches. Would the time of hegemony of wood in the creation of furniture be passed ? Several findings seem to point out the contrary. Where is the true place of the wood in furniture design to be found in the post-war period ? And what are the reasons ?

Full textThe present study’s purpose is to reconstitute, on the base of archive sources, mainly on the inventories usually dressed after the death of the house’s owner, Montpellier domestic interior during the religious conflicts (and even beyond those, until 1715) in its cultural and especially in its artistic dimension. By making the list of the inventoried decoration and art objects, we tried to define the terms usually employed to designate each category of objects, its character and style. The global analysis of the interiors, initially carried out by means of statistics, was further refined with certain particular aspects of these interiors: the possession of decoration, art objects or any other kind of cultural objects (like those intended for the religious practice, books or any sort of curiosity) by the different social backgrounds and the relationship between these types of objects and the confession of their owners are some of our principal interests. In order to highlight these aspects, we also studied some particular cases by analysing certain documents which appeared as particularly significant to us. By doing this, the main question we asked concerns the character of these interiors: collections or simple sets of objects?

Full textIn France in the 19th century, Paris was the center of bronze production. Ornemental and furniture bronzes were often gilt or ormolu bronzes, combinated with crystal, marble, or china. This branch of decorative arts produced clocks, vases, candelabra, lamps, firedogs, mantelpieces and chimney-pieces. This study lists the bronzists, founders, sculptors, chasers, and other workers, and describes their production. The steps of model designing, sculpture, casting, gilding and tinting are explained, as well as the evolution of style, from historicism to Art Nouveau. Economical and social aspects of this industry are depicted : exportation, turnover, the life conditions of bronzists and workers, wages. The need of protection against forgery leaded to an adaptation of the French copyright legislation, under the pressure of the bronzists

Full textIn furniture industry, the numerical simulation allows the design and optimization of wood-based structures, thus avoiding expensive experimental campaigns. Most of wood-based furniture present some particular features in terms of material properties and geometries. On the one hand, the properties of timber materials (such as particule boards) are strongly heterogeneous and anisotropic. On the other hand, the furniture are often made of simply-shaped elements and then can be represented by an assembly of plates and/or beams. The present work deals with those specific features and presents the identification of the elastic properties of particle boards from digital image correlation (DIC) [Chevalier et al. 2001] as well as the simulation of the mechanical behavior of furniture. First, three-point bending tests based on Timoshenko’s beam theory are performed on different samples cut from a prototype desk for the identification of the material properties using DIC techniques. Secondly, a probabilistic model for the uncertain material parameters is constructed by using the Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt)principle [Soize 2017] combined with a Markov Chain Monte-Carlo (MCMC) method based on Metropolis-Hastings algorithm for generating realizations of the underlying random variables. Thirdly, numerical virtual tests are performed to propagate the uncertainties in the material properties through the model and assess the impact of such variabilities on the response of the structure. Lastly, several real tests were previously conducted on the desk in order to validate the proposed numerical approach. Quite good agreement is observed between the numerical computations and the experimental measurements

Full textThis work is a pluridisciplinary study of archaeological artefacts, images and texts on the subject of furniture in Western Europe from the 6th to the 13th c. It deals with the technical aspects of furniture making, such as wood species, their origins and means of joining the different parts of a piece of furniture, as well as a more sociological approach related to its use and specificities during the Middle Ages. This latter notion concerns the everyday use of furniture as well as more remarquable ones, including in funerary context or regarding the symbolic role it can hold. Local particularisms and chronological evolutions are taken into account and developped

Full textIndoor atmospheres appear very rich in volatile organic compounds (VOC). These substances form a “dangerous mix” whose composition and effects on health remain still unknown. This complexity makes difficult the identification and the quantification of indoor sources on the indoor air quality. The purpose of this thesis is to establish qualitative and quantitative relationship between VOC indoor sources and the concentrations observed in French dwellings. The first axis of this work deals with the development of passive measurement to determine the formaldehyde (FA) and acetaldehyde emission rates of materials. This sampler was validated in laboratory, then used in-situ, in a batch of measurements carried out in student rooms. This diagnosis on site shows that the furniture and the building materials contribute equally to the indoor concentration in FA. The increase of the emissions is clearly influenced by the rise in the temperature. A balance mass model based on the measured emission rates led to a satisfying prediction of the FA concentrations in the 24 sampled rooms. The second axis deals with the analysis of the chemical profiles of 60 residences. From a “screening” of the VOC; homogeneous classes of chemical profiles associated with the dwellings could be established. Assumptions on the potential sources of these compounds were formulated and examined on the basis of the bibliography, the descriptive questionnaires of the dwellings and the emissions of materials and products present in indoor environment
