Abstract:
High-resolution computed tomography images were acquired for 31 proximal human tibiae, age 8 to 37.5 years, from Norris Farms #36 cemetery site (A.D. 1300). Morphometric analysis of subchondral cortical and trabecular bone architecture was performed between and within the tibial condyles. Kruskal–Wallis and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were used to examine the association between region, age, body mass, and each morphometric parameter. The findings indicate that age-related changes in mechanical loading have varied effects on subchondral bone morphology. With age, trabecular microstructure incre

Abstract Objectives Chronic inflammation and selenium deficiency are common in persons infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Both C-reactive protein, a pro-inflammatory biomarker, and selenium deficiency have been associated with accelerated disease progression and poorer survival among persons infected with HIV-infection. However, research on the role of serum selenium levels in inflammation is limited. We assessed the association between serum selenium levels and C-reactive protein (CRP) concentrations in a cohort of persons infected with HIV. Methods A cross-sectional survey

Dairy intake has been associated with healthier body weight among adults. Obesity during adolescence is a risk factor for chronic diseases in adulthood. Therefore, we examined associations between intake of dairy servings (i.e., milk, yogurt, and cheese; mean intake =1.6 servings/day) assessed by the Fred Hutchinson Food Frequency Questionnaire and measures of body composition (weight, waist circumference (WC), and body mass index (BMI)) among 81 college freshmen (28 men, 53 women), mean age 18.3 years. For women, mean values for body composition measures were weight (60.2 kg), WC (76.6 cm) an

Since the mid-eighties, personality and mood have undergone vigorous surveillance and repair across new populations in the United States. While government and the psy-complexes 1 have always had a stake in promoting citizen health, it is unique that, today, State, industry, and non-governmental organisations recruit consumers to act upon their own mental health. And while citizen behaviours in public spaces have long been fodder for diagnosis, the scope of behaviours and the breadth of the surveyed population has expanded significantly over the past twenty years. Through my last lengthy writing project, it did not take long to I realise I had become obsessed with paths. The proof of it was there in my notebooks, and, most prominently, in the backlog of photographs cluttering the inner workings of my mobile phone. Most of the photographs I took had a couple of things in common: first, the astonishing greenness of the world they were describing; second, the way a road or path or corridor or pavement or trail led off into distance. The greenness was because I was in England, in summer, and mostly in a part of the country where green seems at times the onl

Not surprisingly, black organizations were especially appreciative of his efforts. In 1949 alone, the black-owned Chicago Defender named him, along with Eleanor Roosevelt and President Truman, to its 1948 “honor roll of democracy”; the Negro Newspaper Publishers Association cited his “impressive contributions to the advancement of Negroes”; Color magazine named him to its 1948 “Jury of Democracy”; and in the spring, the North and South Carolina chapters of Omega

This study is an outcome of the anthropological analysis of human skeletal remains from a cemetery in Kazimierza Wielka, site 12, dating to the late pre-Roman and Roman Period. The analysis involved 30 archaeological features, including both inhumation and cremation burials. In total, the remains of 35 individuals were identified. Inhumation graves were more frequent, while cremation graves included urn burials, pit graves, and quadrangular groove-type features. Additionally, small concentrations of cremated bones were occasionally found within inhumation graves. The state of skeletal preserva
