The first examples of intramolecular addition of primary amidyl radicals to olefins are described. Amidyl radicals were generated from N-(phenylthio)amides in refluxing benzene using a catalytic amount of 2,2′-azobis(isobutyronitrile) (5 mol%) and tributyltin hydride (~2.2 equiv.). The resulting yields of cyclic products ranged from 63% to 85%.Key words: radical cyclization, amidyl radicals, nitrogen heterocycles.

Amidyl radicals possessing Δ4,5, Δ5,6, and Δ6,7 double bonds were generated from the photodecomposition of nitrosamides and chloramides and the products were identified. Dichotomies of amidyl radical reactivities were discovered and compared with published kinetic rate constants. In complete reversal to intermolecular reactivities, intramolecularly the alkenyl amidyl radicals preferentially add to the double bonds rather than abstract a C-5 hydrogen even if it is allylic. In intramolecular competition, amidyl radicals add to an acyl side chain double bond more efficiently than to an alkyl one;

Model bromamides were photolysed to investigate the reactivity of intramolecular C-5 hydrogen abstraction (from the nitrogen atom) of the corresponding amidyl radicals and of the cyclization of the resulting C-bromides. This section contains a brief overview of alkyl radicals in synthesis and methods for their generation. The aminyl radical section gives a brief description of the nature of the radical and then proceeds with general techniques used, or now abandoned, for aminyl radical formation. It also reviews amidyl, aminium cation and Lewis acid metal complexed aminyl radicals describing their superiority over neutral aminyl radicals. Various methodologies are also described using aminyl radicals in the synthesis of heterocyclic and natural products.

In this project the use of amides as precursors for imidoyl radicals in heterocyclic chemistry has been developed. Amides were converted to thioamides, which function as precursors for imidoyl radical equivalents. Also, a novel protocol for the synthesis of imidoyl selanides was developed for the purpose of using these as imidoyl radical precursors. The precursors were used in a study of intramolecular oxidative cyclisation of imidoyl radicals onto electron deficient pyrroles and indoles. The paper explores the architectural landscape of San Diego, Texas, a small, predominantly Hispanic town located on the edge of the Eagle Ford Shale oil field. Without a booming industry to fuel its growth, the town finds itself in a precarious position, threatened with losing its place within the planetary urbanization network, which exploits the countryside in favor of urban centers. Camel whey-quercetin conjugates were fabricated via free radicals using a combination of ultrasonication treatment and a redox-pair (ascorbic acid/H2O2). Conjugation of whey with quercetin was confirmed using UV-Vis. spectroscopy, FTIR and SDS-PAGE. UV-Visible spectroscopy showed a bathochromic shift and appearance of a hump around ≈350 nm (absent in whey sample) that can be attributed to binding of quercetin with whey protein.
