Abstract:
This paper presents a new formulation for trailing edge noise radiation from rotating blades based on an analytical solution of the convective wave equation. It accounts for distributed loading and the effect of mean flow and spanwise wavenumber. A commonly used theory due to Schlinker and Amiet predicts trailing edge noise radiation from rotating blades. However, different versions of the theory exist; it is not known which version is the correct one, and what the range of validity of the theory is. This paper addresses both questions by deriving Schlinker and Amiet's theory in a simple way and by comparing it with the new formulation, using model blade elements representative of a wind turbine, a cooling fan and an aircraft propeller. The correct form of Schlinker and Amiet's theory is identified. It is valid at high enough frequency, i.e. for a Helmholtz number relative to chord greater than one and a rotational frequency much smaller than the angular frequency of the noise sources.

Abstract:
Direct numerical simulations (DNS) are conducted of turbulent flow passing an infinitely thin trailing edge. The objective is to investigate the turbulent flow field in the vicinity of the trailing edge and the associated broadband noise generation. To generate a turbulent boundary layer a short distance from the inflow boundary, high-amplitude lifted streaks and disturbances that can be associated with coherent outer-layer vortices are introduced at the inflow boundary. A rapid increase in skin friction and a decrease in boundary layer thickness and pressure fluctuations is observed at the trailing edge. It is demonstrated that the behaviour of the hydrodynamic field in the vicinity of the trailing edge can be predicted with reasonable accuracy using triple-deck theory if the eddy viscosity is accounted for. Point spectra of surface pressure difference are shown to vary considerably towards the trailing edge, with a significant reduction of amplitude occurring in the low-frequency range. The acoustic pressure obtained from the DNS is compared with predictions from two- and three-dimensional acoustic analogies and the classical trailing-edge theory of Amiet. For low frequencies, two-dimensional theory succeeds in predicting the acoustic pressure in the far field with reasonable accuracy due to a significant spanwise coherence of the surface pressure difference and predominantly two-dimensional sound radiation. For higher frequencies, however, the full three-dimensional theory is required for an accurate prediction of the acoustic far field. DNS data are used to test some of the key assumptions invoked by Amiet for the derivation of the classical trailing-edge theory. Even though most of the approximations are shown to be reasonable, they collectively lead to a deviation from the DNS results, in particular for higher frequencies. Moreover, because the three-dimensional acoustic analogy does not provide significantly improved results, it is suggested that some of the discrepancies can be attributed to the approach of evaluating the far-field sound using a Kirchhoff-type integration of the surface pressure difference.

Abstract:
The study of clay tokens in the Ancient Near East has focused, for the most part, on their role as antecedents to the cuneiform script. Starting with Pierre Amiet and Maurice Lambert in the 1960s the theory was put forward that tokens, or calculi, represent an early cognitive attempt at recording. This theory was taken up by Denise Schmandt-Besserat who studied a large diachronic corpus of Near Eastern tokens. Since then little has been written except in response to Schmandt-Besserat's writings. Most discussions of tokens have generally focused on the time period between the eighth and fourth millennium bc with the assumption that token use drops off as writing gains ground in administrative contexts. Now excavations in southeastern Turkey at the site of Ziyaret Tepe — the Neo-Assyrian provincial capital Tušhan — have uncovered a corpus of tokens dating to the first millennium bc. This is a significant new contribution to the documented material. These tokens are found in association with a range of other artefacts of administrative culture — tablets, dockets, sealings and weights — in a manner which indicates that they had cognitive value concurrent with the cuneiform writing system and suggests that tokens were an important tool in Neo-Assyrian imperial administration.

Abstract:
The shear layer characteristics of an open-jet acoustic wind tunnel are of key importance on measurements of aeroacoustics. The effects of thickness, spreading angle and strength of shear layer on acoustic propagation and source localization are investigated through the mean/spreading shear layer with a self-similar velocity distribution. Based on the shear flow, the acoustic propagation is computed by the linearized Euler equations via a source term, and then source localization is obtained from beamforming technique combined with the theory of Amiet. Results show that the numerical method can precisely capture the refraction and reflection after sound traversing shear layer. The thickness, spreading angle and strength of the shear layer exerts little effects on the refracted region where sound wave nearly vertical incident, while mainly influence the corresponding up/downstream region in terms of phase change. Increment of thickness, spreading angle and strength of the shear layer increases the acoustic difference between the shear layer with and without thickness, and produces a larger error of source localization downstream of the actual position.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the effects of rotorcraft design and operating parameters on trailing-edge noise. A rotor trailing-edge noise prediction method is first developed where the aerodynamics and the turbulence wall pressure spectrum near the trailing edge on airfoils are predicted by a combination of the standard blade element momentum theory , a viscous boundary-layer panel method, and a recently developed empirical wall pressure spectrum model. The coordinate transformations are combined with the Amiet model to predict far-field noise. Compared to experimental data, the validation of this method demonstrates its advantages and validity for airfoil and rotorcraft broadband noise predictions. Then, this method is used to study the effects of rotorcraft design and operating parameters on rotor trailing-edge noise. It is found that helicopter broadband noise scales with the 4.5th to 5.0th power of the tip Mach number in which the range is determined by the typical helicopter collective pitch angle in operation. Detailed trend analyses of noise levels as a function of frequency are presented in terms of the collective pitch angle, twist angle, rotor solidity, rotor radius, disk loading, and number of blades. It is found that the collective pitch angle, twist angle, and chord length make noticeable impacts on low- and midfrequency noise. Finally, a semianalytic model is presented to predict the directivity and geometric attenuation of rotor trailing-edge noise.

Abstract:
A new analytic result in acoustics called “Formulation 1B,” proposed by Farassat, is used to compute the loading noise from an unsteady surface pressure distribution on a thin airfoil in the time domain. This formulation is a new solution of the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings equation with the loading source term. The formulation contains a far field surface integral that depends on the time derivative and the surface gradient of the pressure on the airfoil, as well as a contour integral on the boundary of the airfoil surface. As a first test case, the new formulation is used to compute the noise radiated from a flat plate, moving through a sinusoidal gust of constant frequency. The unsteady surface pressure for this test case is analytically specied from a result based on linear airfoil theory. This test case is used to examine the velocity scaling properties of Formulation 1B and to demonstrate its equivalence to Formulation 1A of Farassat. The new acoustic formulation, again with an analytic surface pressure, is then used to predict broadband noise radiated from an airfoil immersed in homogeneous, isotropic turbulence. The results are compared with experimental data previously reported by Paterson and Amiet. Good agreement between predictions and measurements is obtained. Finally, an alternative form of Formulation 1B is described for statistical analysis of broadband noise.

Abstract:
Amie Thomasson has developed a theory of fictional entities, according to which they exist as contingent abstract objects. In her view, fictional characters are cultural artifacts just as the works of fiction they feature in. They are doubly dependent objects: for their becoming they depend on creative intentional acts of their author, and for maintaining their existence they depend on preservation of a copy of any fictional work they appear in. Thomasson claims that her theory has the advantage of vindicating the common beliefs about fictional entities embodied in the study, evaluation and interpretation of literature. However, I argue that, under this theory of fictional entities, no account of reference of fictional singular terms ? neither the descriptive, nor the causal, nor Thomasson?s preferred hybrid account ? can accommodate all the aspects of our literary practices.

This paper examines how people assess inequality of income distribution and how inequality could be measured. We start from the philosophical analysis of Temkin, who distinguishes nine plausible aspects of inequality. His approach is based on the concept of ‘complaints’ or distances between incomes. We examine the Temkin approach by means of the questionnaire-experimental method pioneered by Amiel and Cowell to find out whether the aspects of equality have any plausibility for student respondents and, if so, whether there are aspects which are more appealing than others. Both the numerical and verbal responses show that a considerable majority of the respondents might be influenced by the intuitions included in the combination of the Weighted Additive Principle and the Average view of complaints. The questionnaire results also shed some empirical light on the acceptance of the Transfer Principle and the attitudes towards the Sequence.

Abstract:
Analyzing the historical, juridical and ethnographical information about treasures, the author points out at the links between the treasure legends and the mythologies of the Otherworld. The treasures, in their most archaic identifiable aspects, are a part of the Otherworld reality. The access to it is regulated by a system of rules governed by forgotten divinities of the underworld and, also, is a result of a form of initiation. One of the basic rules of treasure finding is that of non-intentionality, of the complete absence of any desire for enrichment. Also, there can be found interesting forms of the coincidence of the opposite, and in this respect, we can quote quite frequent situations in which Vâlva (spirit/deity protecting the treasure) appears to women in the form of a man and to men in the form of a woman. Treasure legends reveal a set of ethical rules and another set of archaic magic practices, all of which representing disparate survivals of ancient belief systems. The magical treasure-seeking rituals are recorded in both the occult / scholar literature and the folk traditions, and the burning of treasures at important dates associated with the great Christian feasts also refer to a belief system in which the treasure mythology plays an important place. The connection between the treasure and the religious holidays is also an indication of the relationship between the opening of treasures and a belief system that has as its central point the communication with the Otherworld.

Abstract:
AbstractLet w be a word in k variables. For a finite nilpotent group G, a conjecture of Amit states that $$N_w(1)\ge |G|^{k-1}$$ N w ( 1 ) ≥ | G | k - 1 , where for $$g\in G$$ g ∈ G , the quantity $$N_w(g)$$ N w ( g ) is the number of k-tuples $$(g_1,\ldots ,g_k)\in G^{(k)}$$ ( g 1 , … , g k ) ∈ G ( k ) such that $$w(g_1,\ldots ,g_k)={g}$$ w ( g 1 , … , g k ) = g . Currently, this conjecture is known to be true for groups of nilpotency class 2. Here we consider a generalized version of Amit’s conjecture, which states that $$N_w(g)\ge |G|^{k-1}$$ N w ( g ) ≥ | G | k - 1 for g a w-value in G, and prove that $$N_w(g)\ge |G|^{k-2}$$ N w ( g ) ≥ | G | k - 2 for finite groups G of odd order and nilpotency class 2. If w is a word in two variables, we further show that the generalized Amit conjecture holds for finite groups G of nilpotency class 2. In addition, we use character theory techniques to confirm the generalized Amit conjecture for finite p-groups (p a prime) with two distinct irreducible character degrees and a particular family of words. Finally, we discuss the related group properties of being rational and chiral, and show that every finite group of nilpotency class 2 is rational.

Abstract:
This paper is a response to Gary Marshall, Colin Macleod, and Amit Ronʼs careful discussions of my book, A Theory of Governance. The word “governance” is used in two contexts that might initially appear to have little relation to each other. Governance is used, first, as a general term to discuss abstract theories of coordination and organization. And governance is used, second, to narrate a historic shift in public organization and action. A Theory of Governance offers a decentered theory (part one of the book) that seeks to combine a general analysis of various forms of coordination and organization (part two of the book) with a narrative of recent changes in public organization and action (part three of the book). In this paper, I emphasize that decentered theory turns to historical genealogies to avoid determinism, reification, and foundationalism. Contemporary governance is, therefore, the variegated product of contests over meanings, specifically those reform agendas that have sought to spread markets and networks. I conclude the essay with some reflections on the nature and importance of democratic innovations within governance.

Abstract:
We focus on the analysis of current research in Business Models in the context of e-business, resulting in relevant research gaps and a set of propositions. A bibliographic review has been conducted from which a theoretical framework has been developed. Once the gaps in the literature have been pointed out, a series of research proposals are presented. These should be tested based on data collected from real cases through analysis and interpretation. The applied lens of the theory is Amit and Zotts Business Model framework (2001) and Business Model Themes (BMT) “NICE” (novelty, lock-in, complementarity and efficiency) (2001). Analysis evolves around the explanation and feasibility of Business Model Themes for value creation and value capture in digital business models (current general research gap in the e-business domain). The results show that future directions should investigate different combinations of BMTs which represent research gaps (propositions 1 to 3). Other contexts which were not considered so far in this regard (non-digital business), also represent a research gap (proposition 4). Moreover, further synthesis of the literature resulted in a potential consideration of “product market strategies” (Amit and Zott, 2008) as a new theory to apply and test value creation and capturing in digital business (proposition 5 and 6), also from an evolutionary perspective. We ask how this combination affects the performance of firms who want to move on digital transformation with an omnichannel environment. It is essential in this study how these firms can create new value and how they can keep it. We try to explain how these value drivers could be work across time, even under varying environmental regimes. It would mean an advance in the existing academic framework around the reference literature on the business model. To be able to determine which combinations of BMT and Product Market Strategy (PMS) have not yet been tested would be advantageous for the firms. It could offer the appropriate information to the retail company with traditional BM towards digital BM. Moreover, it will be able to work successfully and to maintain constant along the time.

Abstract:
The community needs, the demands for policy, the education system in pesantren have undergone many changes overtimes. However, it was a fact that the community has acknowledged the quality of pesantren graduates. The basic assumption for this was that pesantren graduates have proven sufficient quality because they were educated by qualified teachers. This article examined Teacher Development in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) including the model of Teacher Development implementation, the barriers, and their impacts. This study applied a phenomenological approach. This study applied a qualitative method by applying the Multi-Site Study at Al-Amien Islamic Boarding School Sumenep, Sidogiri Pasuruan Islamic Boarding School, and Baitul Arqom Islamic Boarding School of Jember, East Java. This study found that the focus of Teacher Development in Islamic boarding schools was unique and more effective than that of the theory of formal teacher development management and formal education institutions which tended to underlined the administrative, bureaucratic and formalistic aspects. The implementation of the management in mu’adalah pesantren was started from planning, recruitment and selection stages, development and coaching comprehensively covered by spiritual and substantial elements.

Abstract:
A papirusz egyik helyének [col. XVI,1] új olvasatával a komikus hangszerelést kiegészítő invektíva is az eddigiektől eltérő megvilágításba kerül.

Abstract:
The four articles in this first issue of 2014 could not have, at first glance, less in common. The first piece, ‘Zooësis and “Becoming with” in India: The “Figure” of Elephant in Sahyande Makan: The Elephant Project’ by Ameet Parameswaran, examines the theatrical adaptation of a 1944 Malayalam poem by the company Theatre Roots and Wings. In ‘The Dynamics of Space and Resistance in Muhammad ‘Azīz's Tahrir Square: The Revolution of the People and the Genius of the Place’, Salwa Rashad Amin discusses the importance of ‘Azīz's play in the context of Egypt's recent and historical revolutions. Ketu Katrak takes up the performance of affect and its implication for social justice in ‘“Stripping Women of Their Wombs”: Active Witnessing of Performances of Violence’. Finally, Katia Arfara explores the work of a performance artist in terms of early twentieth-century precedents for European performance art, ‘Denaturalizing Time: On Kris Verdonck's Performative Installation End’. Theatre Research International readers will find much of value in each article, and they represent the kind of broad international focus our journal endeavours to provide.

Abstract:
This reserach aims to describe the phenomenon of Arabic and Indonesian code switching at TMI al-Amien Prenduan Madura. The use of Arabic as the instruction language of classroom remains a problem because of the language backgrounds diversity both teachers and students. The problem refers to code switching between two or more languages. By using qualitative methods, the research uses recordings, observations and interviews as data collection tools. Then the data is sorted and analyzed by comparing and discussing the presentation of the data based on the theory and practice sections. The results showed that code switching between Arabic and Indonesian occurred in the classroom, either in formal or informal language variations. The causes or motives for using code switching are identified in five reasons, (1) specific theme, (2) quotation, (3) solidarity, (4) clarification, and (5) terminology. This finding rejects the view that code switching is a language defect, such as the case of language interference which occurs due to a lack of knowledge about linguistic elements. On the contrary, this finding strengthens the case of Arabic and Indonesian code switching as the deliberate use of language for certain social purposes, both teachers and students, which is supported by a variety of pragmatics and a micro-level social context, as the classroom conversation strategy.

Abstract:
Jelen tanulmány, Herman József vonatkozó munkásságához kapcsolódva, a szóvégi -s kiesésének, törlésének problémájával foglalkozik a latin feliratos anyag tükrében.
