Abstract:

Abstract:
The diagnosis of Mendelian disorders requires labor-intensive literature research. Trained clinicians can spend hours looking for the right publication(s) supporting a single gene that best explains a patient’s disease. AMELIE (Automatic Mendelian Literature Evaluation) greatly accelerates this process. AMELIE parses all 29 million PubMed abstracts and downloads and further parses hundreds of thousands of full-text articles in search of information supporting the causality and associated phenotypes of most published genetic variants. AMELIE then prioritizes patient candidate variants for their likelihood of explaining any patient’s given set of phenotypes. Diagnosis of singleton patients (without relatives’ exomes) is the most time-consuming scenario, and AMELIE ranked the causative gene at the very top for 66% of 215 diagnosed singleton Mendelian patients from the Deciphering Developmental Disorders project. Evaluating only the top 11 AMELIE-scored genes of 127 (median) candidate genes per patient resulted in a rapid diagnosis in more than 90% of cases. AMELIE-based evaluation of all cases was 3 to 19 times more efficient than hand-curated database–based approaches. We replicated these results on a retrospective cohort of clinical cases from Stanford Children’s Health and the Manton Center for Orphan Disease Research. An analysis web portal with our most recent update, programmatic interface, and code is available at AMELIE.stanford.edu.

Abstract:
In many of Amélie Nothomb's autofictional novels, the final step toward regaining the jouissance of her lost childhood is the development of the character Amélie-the-writer. Nothomb depicts in multiple accounts her character Amélie's coming to writing, a process that mirrors her nostalgia for the tube-like identity of her prelinguistic self and her perceived divinity during her childhood in Japan, as well as her desire to return to the womb. This article considers first the characteristics that are associated with Amélie's childhood, her sense of a divine and mythic self, secondly the various scenes in Nothomb's autofictional novels in which the narrator Amélie experiences a moment of death and rebirth through violence at sea, and, finally, how the character Amélie achieves, to some extent, the desired return to the ideal of childhood through the creation of a fictional self in her writing.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
The keynotes of Japanese-Belgian writer Amélie Nothomb´s oeuvre are the displacement and the relations stablished with the difference. She devotes a considerable part of her production to the autobiographical fictionalization. This work frames the novels Métaphysique des tubes, Stupeur et tremblements, Ni d'Ève, ni d'Adam andLa nostalgie heureuse - in which the author refers to Japan, where she was born, her exile and return. We propose a reflection on the use of literature as a tool for identity construction tool and integration in the author´s self-representation as a character, rooted in the concepts of autobiography, narrative identity and individuation. By exploring the self-referential categories, the author´s media presence and the confrontation between her imaginary homeland and the reality of the Japanese national culture, we investigate the importance of space and fiction in the identity configurations woven, lost and re-configured within and outside the text.

Abstract:
Amalie Skram (1846-1905) was born in Norway but lived in Denmark. She published several books about gender relations and built up a reputation as a naturalistic writer. In 1894, a nervous breakdown made her seek help from the famous psychiatrist Knud Pontoppidan. He sent her to an asylum, but she returned home after spending two months in psychiatric care. In 1895, Skram published two novels about the painter Else Kant, based on her own experiences but not written as autobiographies. The books, Professor Hieronimus and På Sct. Jørgen, came to be part of an ongoing debate about the rights of psychiatric patients. My purpose is to analyze the exercise of power in Skram's portrayal of psychiatry, especially the way it is gendered. The power relations are examined with concepts established by Foucault in his power analysis and with relevant medical history as a context. I treat the books as fictive narratives, that should not be seen as describing Skram's own experiences. My result actualizes several of Foucault's main concepts. Psychiatry works through the power to define – the right to give a name. Psychiatry define what madness is, and thus what normality is. The patient is, when defined as mad, also defined as unable to tell the truth about herself and the world. The treatment is a project of normalization and moral upbringing, where the patient is required to learn the norms she is thought to lack, and also to control her feelings instead of expressing them. Hysteria is the diagnosis for expressing strong feelings and can be read as an opposition to the male society, as well as the medical system. Gazes play a big part in these two books. Else is looked at by the medical, defining, gaze. She is herself observing the psychiatry and uses her gaze to look at the other patients in a way that raises questions about both abnormality and normality. In my reading, the gaze exercises power and the so called "male gaze" can also be used by women. The text is ambivalent concerning Else's possible madness. She is described as troubled and almost psychotic in the beginning, but later as sane. My conclusion is that Else gains her own form of sanity, not because of the treatment, but as a way of opposing it. Else is never made an object by the objectifying medical gaze. Instead, she creates herself as an agent and a subject. She is defined as mad, but is determined to in turn define and describe the psychiatry as a form of counter-power.

Abstract:
This monograph is dedicated to Amélie Weiler, a diarist from Strasbourg. Six of her diaries, found in 1987, were published under the title : Journal d'une jeune fille mal dans son siècle:1840-1859. They enrich the cultural heritage of young women's diaries in the XIXth , which have been studied by Philippe Lejeune in Le Moi des demoiselles. The editorial process –from the manuscript (1864 pages) to the abridged version published (442 pages) – shows two ways of seeing the “book”, the editor's and the diarist's, the latter confronting stereotypes. Then the reader explores Amélie's world, her virtual library, her imaginary museum and geography. Being bilingual, she has the knack of waxing enthusiastic about minor works. The intertextuality brings about literary games, copying, collecting and translating activities, which indicate a day to day self-invention and the forming of a woman's identity. The diary mixes different forms of writing. The third part reveals the nascent novelist trying her hand at portraits, short stories and dream tales. Her writings are the work of a “creative memory”. These unpublished works speak for a new editing form, associating both historical and literary approaches

Abstract:
Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Additive Manufacturing Integrated Energy (AMIE) demonstration project leverages rapid innovation through additive manufacturing to connect a natural-gas-powered hybrid electric vehicle to a high-performance building designed to produce, consume, and store renewable energy. The AMIE demonstration project consists of a building and vehicle that were additively manufactured (3D-printed) using the laboratory’s big area additive manufacturing (BAAM) capabilities and an integrated energy system with smart controls that connects the two via wireless power transfer. The printed utility vehicle features a hybrid electric powertrain with onboard power generation from a natural gas fueled auxiliary power unit (APU). The APU extends vehicle range through a series hybrid powertrain configuration that recharges the vehicle’s lithium-ion energy storage system and acts as a mobile power generation system for the printed building. The development of the powertrain used for the printed range-extended electric vehicle was completed using a powertrain-in-the-loop development process and the vehicle prototype implementation was accelerated using BAAM. A flexible 3.2 kW solar photovoltaic system paired with electric vehicle batteries will provide renewable power generation and storage. Energy flows back and forth between the car and house using fast, efficient bidirectional wireless power transfer. The AMIE project marked the first demonstration of bidirectional level 2 charging through wireless power transfer. The accelerated creation and printing of the car and house will further demonstrate the program’s function as an applied science tool to get products to market more quickly than what currently is possible with traditional manufacturing. This paper presents a case study that summarizes the efforts and technical details for using the printed research platforms. This paper explores the focuses on printing of the vehicle, powertrain integration, and possibilities for vehicles providing power to buildings in different scenarios. The ability for BAAM to accelerate the prototype development for the integrated energy system process is explored. Details of how this was successfully accomplished in 9 months with more than 20 industry partners are discussed.
