_______________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
The keynotes of Japanese-Belgian writer Amélie Nothomb´s oeuvre are the displacement and the relations stablished with the difference. She devotes a considerable part of her production to the autobiographical fictionalization. This work frames the novels Métaphysique des tubes, Stupeur et tremblements, Ni d'Ève, ni d'Adam andLa nostalgie heureuse - in which the author refers to Japan, where she was born, her exile and return. We propose a reflection on the use of literature as a tool for identity construction tool and integration in the author´s self-representation as a character, rooted in the concepts of autobiography, narrative identity and individuation. By exploring the self-referential categories, the author´s media presence and the confrontation between her imaginary homeland and the reality of the Japanese national culture, we investigate the importance of space and fiction in the identity configurations woven, lost and re-configured within and outside the text.

Abstract:
Amalie Skram (1846-1905) was born in Norway but lived in Denmark. She published several books about gender relations and built up a reputation as a naturalistic writer. In 1894, a nervous breakdown made her seek help from the famous psychiatrist Knud Pontoppidan. He sent her to an asylum, but she returned home after spending two months in psychiatric care. In 1895, Skram published two novels about the painter Else Kant, based on her own experiences but not written as autobiographies. The books, Professor Hieronimus and På Sct. Jørgen, came to be part of an ongoing debate about the rights of psychiatric patients. My purpose is to analyze the exercise of power in Skram's portrayal of psychiatry, especially the way it is gendered. The power relations are examined with concepts established by Foucault in his power analysis and with relevant medical history as a context. I treat the books as fictive narratives, that should not be seen as describing Skram's own experiences. My result actualizes several of Foucault's main concepts. Psychiatry works through the power to define – the right to give a name. Psychiatry define what madness is, and thus what normality is. The patient is, when defined as mad, also defined as unable to tell the truth about herself and the world. The treatment is a project of normalization and moral upbringing, where the patient is required to learn the norms she is thought to lack, and also to control her feelings instead of expressing them. Hysteria is the diagnosis for expressing strong feelings and can be read as an opposition to the male society, as well as the medical system. Gazes play a big part in these two books. Else is looked at by the medical, defining, gaze. She is herself observing the psychiatry and uses her gaze to look at the other patients in a way that raises questions about both abnormality and normality. In my reading, the gaze exercises power and the so called "male gaze" can also be used by women. The text is ambivalent concerning Else's possible madness. She is described as troubled and almost psychotic in the beginning, but later as sane. My conclusion is that Else gains her own form of sanity, not because of the treatment, but as a way of opposing it. Else is never made an object by the objectifying medical gaze. Instead, she creates herself as an agent and a subject. She is defined as mad, but is determined to in turn define and describe the psychiatry as a form of counter-power.

Abstract:
This monograph is dedicated to Amélie Weiler, a diarist from Strasbourg. Six of her diaries, found in 1987, were published under the title : Journal d'une jeune fille mal dans son siècle:1840-1859. They enrich the cultural heritage of young women's diaries in the XIXth , which have been studied by Philippe Lejeune in Le Moi des demoiselles. The editorial process –from the manuscript (1864 pages) to the abridged version published (442 pages) – shows two ways of seeing the “book”, the editor's and the diarist's, the latter confronting stereotypes. Then the reader explores Amélie's world, her virtual library, her imaginary museum and geography. Being bilingual, she has the knack of waxing enthusiastic about minor works. The intertextuality brings about literary games, copying, collecting and translating activities, which indicate a day to day self-invention and the forming of a woman's identity. The diary mixes different forms of writing. The third part reveals the nascent novelist trying her hand at portraits, short stories and dream tales. Her writings are the work of a “creative memory”. These unpublished works speak for a new editing form, associating both historical and literary approaches

Amanieux, Laureline. Paris 10, 2007. http://www.theses.fr/2007PA100122.

Full text
Abstract:
In her autobiographical novels, Amelie Nothomb develops unique characters by alternating between role reversals and disorders of identity. This question of the self is the focus of our study. Applying the theory of Paul Ricoeur, we postulate the creation of a split personality that possesses two simultaneous and contradictory identities, one realistic but undervalued, the other imagined and valued. We call it “the Siamese character”. The narrative structures also create two versions of the same story, one objective, and the other fantastic or fanciful. The stories thereby maintain a strong discordance within a larger sense of unity. By the same token, the time frame is manipulated at will by the protagonist, so that conflicts with chronologic time result in two possible versions of the course of events. We propose a typology of characters separated into opposite camps, and analyze their dual personalities. The physical identity of the characters reveals a gulf between extreme beauty and ugliness, the awkwardness of inhabiting a body and adolescent sexual awakening. Ultimately, the ”self” of Amelie Nothomb’s character is part real and part imagined to deflect criticism of her adolescent identity, and especially her body. This romanticized world rejects laws of non-contradiction to create its own logic: two ”truths” may be possible and the lie is, paradoxically, legitimate. The text demands a double reading so that the reader can reconstruct this double identity of texts and characters, as well as that of the novelist

This thesis aims to investigate what is a work of art, assuming the critical analysis of some texts of Amie Thomasson as its main methodological subsidy. The ontology of Roman Ingarden is also exposed because it is a central influence to the thought of Thomasson. Several concepts used by the author, as the acceptance of ontological pluralism, the search for the specific structure of each type of art and the admission that art involves spatiotemporal and abstract characteristics, go back to the writings of the Polish thinker. These themes are inserted in the main aspect addressed by this thesis, namely, how Thomasson investigates the work of art through the pursuit of its ontological status within the broader context of a categorical framework. The author argues that the central question of the ontology of art is: what kind of entity is a work of art? This question is not answered by a rigid definition of art or a finite list of characteristics that allow classifying any object in the world as art or not art. Thomasson undertakes only the modest pretense of seeking for a successful categorial space for the allocation of works of art. She discusses the fact that traditional aesthetics and metaphysics do not provide adequate categories to allocate art, fiction and cultural objects, because they tend to adopt dualistic systems, like subject-object, real-ideal, concrete-abstract, among others, that are inadequate to think about works of art, which include hybrid features. Alternatively, Thomasson suggests a formal ontological methodology for creating categorial systems and, in this context, categories that meet the specific configuration of artworks. Her proposal is analyzed in this dissertation as an effective solution to capture the ontological structure of works of art through a formal analytical base.

Bigelow, Benjamin A. "Tensions Between Word and Image in Amalie Skram's Professor Hieronimus." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2010. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/2136.

Full text
Abstract:
In her 1895 novel, Professor Hieronimus, Amalie Skram describes the struggle of Else Kant, a young mother and artist, against a tyrannical and apparently unfeeling doctor who keeps her at a Copenhagen asylum for more than a month against her will. Else feels terrorized by the constant surveillance to which she is subjected. This voyeuristic tendency in psychiatry is not only a reflection of Amalie Skram's own experience at a Copenhagen asylum, but is also indicative of a new psychiatric epistemology that understood visual observation as the key to ascertaining objective truth. Skram's novel is thus read against the backdrop of Jean-Martin Charcot's intensely visual treatment practices at the Salpêtrière hospital in Paris, with a specific focus on the photographs of hysterical women Charcot commissioned and published. This voyeuristic/exhibitionistic dynamic between doctor and patient is also cast in semiotic terms, showing how arguments made as early as Lessing's Laokoon provide a useful way of understanding the essential differences between verbal and visual art, and for understanding the tensions between doctor and the patient. W.J.T. Mitchell's notion of "ekphrastic fear" proves a useful concept for demonstrating how anxieties about the breaking down of the strict boundaries between visual and verbal art correspond neatly to similar anxieties that the doctor had about the transgressive potential of a patient who takes up language and describes her condition. These tensions between word and image also highlight the particular historical context in which Skram's novel appeared. Professor Hieronimus was published the same year as Freud and Breuer's Studies on Hysteria, which many consider the founding document of Freudian psychoanalysis. Although writing for completely different audiences, both Freud and Skram argue for the value of the patient's verbal utterances at a time when the patient was seen as little more than a visual specimen whose disorders could only be accurately ascertained by the acute vision of a doctor. In his promotion of the "talking cure," Freud diverged sharply with his mentor, Charcot, and this turning point in psychiatric history from a visual to a verbal epistemological model highlights the timeliness and importance of Skram's novel.

Abstract:

Small Missions for Advanced Research in Technology (SMART-1), represented European Space Agency (ESA) first mission to the moon. It fulfilled the goal of improving the scientific knowledge of earth’s natural satellite, while testing new technologies that had never been used in space exploration. Among the on board instruments of SMART-1 was the Advanced Moon micro-Imager Experiment (AMIE). It was an imaging equipment whose mission was to map the lunar surface providing state-of-the-art resolution. Containing six filters inside its visual scope AMIE allowed the study of the surface composition by multispectral imaging. This thesis aims at building a set of maps covering approximately all the Moon surface as it was mapped by the SMART-1 spacecraft, using the 31945 images captured by the AMIE instrument. During the Earth escape phase the instrument’s CCD was damaged by radiation, causing the accumulation of dark current and invalidating the laboratorial image calibration algorithm. The acquired dataset also suffered from scattered light that got beneath the CCD filters and reduced their contrast. In order to overcome this problem, a new calibration procedure was developed using the in-flight collected data and theoretical models, as well as a method to compensate for the reduced contrast in the filters. For building the lunar maps, the images were individually analysed and classified accordingly to their visual quality and grouped by their illumination conditions, allowing the creation of visually balanced maps. Image mosaicing and projection techniques were used to compensate the geometrical distortions and compose the calibrated images into a set of 88 maps of the Moon. Increasing the flexibility of the process, a comprehensive tool that allows the edition of the images in the mosaiced maps, as well as brightness and contrast correction and adjustment is also presented.

Abstract:
This thesis proposes to examine the representation of the mask and the influence of this concept in Amélie Nothomb’s work, in particular to throw light on the unproven monstrousness of her writing. Before the description of the Belgian French languaged literature and the different literary currents in which the novelist seems to belong to, it takes an interest in masks used by her characters to deceive their surroundings or deceive themselves, and in the world vision that is proposed to the reader. Secondly it describes mask as a permanent feature of the Amélie Nothomb’s voice, in the novelist’s thematic and stylistic writing or in her public or literary characters. Then, it examines the caricatural and grotesque aesthetic of the Amélie Nothomb’s masks, which can make the story beginning a carnival cycle

Abstract:
@Since its apperance in the XIth century to its progressive decline starting in the WVIth century, the popularity of the Amicus and Amelius legend never waned. Nowadays, this legend is not only nearly unknown to the general public, but also, moreparadoxically, both very well-known and not known well to specialists. This is particularly due to the lack of accessibility of the Frenche branch, essantially represented by its most two famous representatives - i. E. The chanson de geste and the Anglo-Norman poem - and the same lack of accessibility of the Latin Branch, since the editions at our disposal also concern only two texts, and are already quite old. This work will attempt to deals with both the editorial and literary sides of this issue. First, we will complete the corpus of editions of the French and Latin traditions, both returning to existing but little known editions and presenting unpublished texts. The second part will be devoted to a literary analysis which, after having summariezd the extensive literary tradition, will focus on several patterns inherent to the entire corpus, and will then set out a new way to read the chanson de geste, in its dual dimension, hagiographic and anagogic

Abstract:
Starting with the analysis of the legitimation and consecration’s process that rules, from the XX century’s second half, literary camp’s mediatization, we propose to study consequent peri-phenomenon, as well as the possible co-relation between this circumstance and the creation itself. Our study is focused on the production of three paradigmatic French expression contemporaneous writers from Europe, whose mediatization follows the popularity: the French Michel Houellebecq, the Belgium Amélie Nothomb and the Romand Swizz Jacques Chessex. We question the possible relations between this mediatization instruments and the effects on these three authors writing options. Attentive to the tranfrontier projection of writers and writings, a convergence’s result of certain mediatization factors, but also to the particularities of the cultural and literary memory where the respective literatures inscribe themselves (in a progressive legitimation process from the peripheral literatures face to the Franco-French centrality), our reflection also tends to contribute to a recontextualisation of the French literary canon in the contemporaneous mediatic society’s context with which the writers in question are engaged.
