The driving circuits of thin-film transistor-liquid crystal displays (TFT-LCDs) for LCD-TV and large-size LCD applications were studied. In the first part, a high slew rate and low offset voltage buffer for TFT-LCD source driver was proposed. For LCD-TV and multimedia applications, TFT-LCD panels become larger and usually have heavy loads in scan/data lines on the array. In order to enhance driving capability of the buffer, two comparators which sense the rising and falling edges of the input waveform were used to turn on the auxiliary driving transistors to enhance charging/discharging of the output load. When the buffer is at steady-state, it consumes no extra power. On the other hand, it needs a low offset voltage to reach the high color depth. The replica-gain circuit could reduce the offset voltage and minimize affection of the mismatch transistors. The offset voltage of the novel buffer amplifier I was reduced to 4.99 mV. In the second part, based on the buffer amplifier I, the buffer amplifier II with the improved offset voltage and output swing were proposed. The active load was adds in the replica-gain stage which could effectively reduce the offset voltage. In this part, two type buffers were designed and simulated. Type A is with the pure offset cancellation in the circuit. Type B is with the offset cancellation and slew rate enhancement functions. The output swing of the buffer amplifier II is from 0.0 to 4.9 V. The offset voltage of the type A and type B can be reduced and controlled within 0.07 mV and 0.19 mV, respectively. Therefore, the proposed high slew rate and low offset voltage buffer has a potential to be applied to the source driver for LCD-TVs and large-size TFT-LCD monitors with high color depth and high resolution.

This thesis focuses on the design of the output buffer for the TFT-LCD source driver circuit that is applied to the large-size panel. The design goals are high-speed, high driving capability, high precise and low-power consumption. Therefore, an improved output buffer used in the type of UXGA is designed. In the circuit, the operation of the pixel on TFT is simulated by using a loading capacitance at the output and the model of the TSMC 0.35um 2P4M CMOS technology. The driver circuit is simulated by the HSPICE program to get the electric characteristics. The operation frequency of the circuit is 100KHz and the full swing on the output voltage is achieved. In addition, to reduce the difference between the practical and ideal values due to the mismatch effects of the circuit and devices, nulling-input part is included in this circuit. Thus, the error voltage is less than 1mV by using this circuit. Finally, owing to the increase of the size and the resolution of the TFT, it would increase the parasitic resistance and capacitance on the data line and shorten the one-row-line time. Therefore, we need to compensate the problem of the RC delay effect and shorten the settling time by adding a pre-emphasis voltage on the voltage of the video signal line.

In this thesis, discuss the different metal location effects the heating plate crystallization, the best way of the thermal energy transfer is bottom gate structure. By the way, different gate dielectrics may transport thermal energies with different rates. After the HPC process, the gate dielectrics will transport the thermal energy to the amorphous Si film, and recrystallizing the amorphous Si film into the poly-silicon film. However, if the gate dielectrics transports the thermal energy too fast, it will result in the film peeling problem. On the other hand, we also compare capping N+ layer and without capping N+ layer effect of the recrystallization. After HPC, We find that while capping N+ layer the crystallization temperature will reduce. The major reason of the recrystallization is bottom gate and N+ layer will absorb the thermal energy to enhance recrystallization. In the pattern effects the heating plate crystallization, we find that the thermal energy selectively absorbed by the gate patterns can be fully transferred to the pre-patterned Si active region. The energy of crystallization radiated from the gate electrode can then be fully transferred to the island-in Si active region and does not share with the other portions as in the conventional TFT structures.

In recent years, the trend of display goes toward high-definition (HD) display for the active-matrix liquid crystal display (AMLCD). The LCDs haves been used in wide varieties of electronic devices, from large-size TV to small-size portable gadgets. To attain high image quality, high LCD resolution is required. As the HD LCD resolution is increased, the source driver of every column line needs to have fast transient response. Therefore, the output buffer of source driver needs to provide the high slew-rate and low dc offset voltage. A high slew-rate source output driver with frequency compensation was fabricated with TSMC 0.35-μm 2P4M CMOS technology. With 5-V supply voltage, it draws only 5-μA static current. In order to meet the high-performance display quality, the slew-rate of the output buffer should be faster than 1μs under the load of 10kΩ/300pF. However, the phase margin of the circuit needs to be larger than 30° under the load of 0kΩ/50pF. Hence, the output buffer is suitable for both small LCD panels and large size LCD panels.

In this work, we have investigated the effects of temperature and optical illumination on organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) with indium-tin-oxide electrode. Experimental results have shown that the turn-on characteristics of the pentacene OTFT with ITO as source/drain electrodes is dependent on environmental temperatures. In addition, it has been found the pentacene OTFT is one kind of photo-sensitive devices. External stimulations can change the I-V characteristics significantly. For example, our pentacene OTFT show a shift of the onset and threshold voltage with illumination, which recovers slowly in the dark. Therefore, except for the application of switch devices, petacene OTFT exhibits a potential application for image sensors.

Recently, poly silicon thin film transistors (poly-Si TFTs ) have been applied in many aspects such as memory, active matrix liquid crystal display (AMLCDs) and so on. Main reason for this because the field effect mobility of poly-Si TFT is almost 100 times higher than that of amorphous silicon thin film transistor. Among different applications, poly Si TFT has been utilized to manufacture pixel switching devices and display-related peripheral driver circuits. It is realized that, with the technology of poly Si TFT, fabrication of large area flat panel liquid crystal display based on glass structure has been a long term trend. Thus, it is very important to focus studies on reliability and electrical characteristic of poly Si TFT. In this thesis, the aim is to study photo sensitivity of poly silicon thin film transistors under different manufacture process such as ELA(.excimer laser annealing) and SLS(sequential lateral solidification). We use backlight source board to shine the bottom of device and observe the effects of device characteristic under various channel dimensions. Due to the different manufacture process cause the various location of grain boundary. Since properties of poly Si TFT like threshold voltage, electrical mobility, subthreshold swing etc. will be degraded due to hot carrier effect, it is the main target to investigate the defect energy gap distribution raised from that effect through electricity analysis. The relationship between operation voltage and defect density will be established as well in this research. It is hoped that information resulted from this thesis can be useful for technology and product development in TFT industry.
