A novel apparatus, combining buffer-gas cooling, electrostatic velocity selection and ion trapping, has been constructed and characterised. This apparatus is designed to investigate cold ion-molecule chemistry in the laboratory, at a variable translational and internal (rotational) temperature. This improves on previous experiments with translationally cold but rotationally hot molecule sources. The ability to vary the rotational temperature of cold molecules will allow for the experimental investigation of post-Langevin capture theories.

This thesis describes the design, construction, operation, and characterisation of an experimental apparatus that produces a source of internally cold, slow molecules that can be used for studying ion-molecule reactions at low temperatures. Crossed molecular beam velocity map imaging (VMI) is employed to state-selectively record the NH3 inelastic scattering products from collisions with a series of colliders; atomic Ar, diatomic D2, and the polyatomics CH4, C2H6 and C(CH3)4. Complementation of Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae g1nA mutants was demonstrated. Tetramethyl ammonium manganese trichloride ([CH3)4N][Mn(II)Cl3]) known as TMMC, has been one of the most interesting systems in experimental magnetism due to its highly one-dimensional magnetic Heisenberg behaviour. The focus of this research programme was to study its magnetic and structural properties as a function of pressure. TMMC crystals were prepared by slow evaporation technique at room temperature; however it quickly became apparent that the material is only weakly magnetic and requires a pressure cell with a very low background.
