In separate traditions in the HB, the Rephaim are presented either as a living group of gigantic warriors or as shadowy figures of the underworld of Sheol. They are referred to as the rp’um in earlier Amorite Ugaritic texts, in which their role and status are much debated. This paper offers a hypothesis that, first, tracks rp’um/Rephaim antecedent traditions from the Sumerian heroic and funerary practices adopted by the Amorites to the tradition of the rp’um of the Ugaritic literature, and then tracks them on to the HB, through the Amorite connection to Mlk/Molech, in two different regional tr

ABSTRACT Since the dawn of Mesopotamian history, the Mediterranean Sea has been considered a natural frontier, both feared and admired as the Great Sea. With the settlement of the Amorites in Mesopotamia, whose cradle was thought of as the “Land of the Sea,” that is, the Mediterranean shore, the importance of this natural element became notorious. The voyages of the sovereigns of the Amorite Syro-Mesopotamian kingdom of Mari—Yahdun-Lim, Samsi-Addu, and Zimri-Lim—to the Mediterranean coast, which this article analyzes in detail, attest to this importance. The author dwells upon the characteristics of selected institutes of family law of the Amorites and comes to the conclusion that the family life in ancient Mesopotamia was very developped. The family in the Hammurabi Code represents the basis not only for economic and financial power of the state, but also for its political stability and security. Abstract This paper analyses Jub. 34:1-9, an extra-biblical account of Jacob and his sons warring against the Amorites. Herein, the Jubilean author portrays Joseph as an exemplary family man who assists his brothers in fighting for and occupying the allotment of Ephraim and Manasseh. While Joseph’s portrayal corresponds to the favorable presentation of the patriarchs in Jubilees, it also highlights Israelite solidarity in the face of an enemy attack. Enhancing Jacob-Israel’s military prowess, this unity leads the Israelites to victory and thus to inheritance of the land. While these themes app

Six months after Operation “Pillar of Defense” – the most recent military clash in the Gaza Strip – Colonel (Res) Gur Laish takes a fresh look at the strategic status between Israel and the Palestinians. Laish writes on the heels of one of his most recent articles published in Infinity Journal, “The Iniquity of the Amorites” (April 2012). This new perspective validates the conclusions in his April 2012 article and demonstrates the fact that Hamas’ Strategy, when it exceeds Israel’s limit, brings about a massive Israeli military retaliation.
