Almeida, Serrita Avril. "Modification of amorphous silicon nitride surfaces by ion implantation of gallium." Thesis, University of Surrey, 1999. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/843307/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study was undertaken to investigate the possibility of synthesis of nitride based semiconductors. To this end hydrogenated amorphous silicon nitride (a-SiNx:Hy) has been deposited as the starting material using PECVD (plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition). Then the effects of implanting gallium into the a-SiNx:H target material have been studied with the aim of forming GaN compounds. Should this technique work, it opens the possibility of carrying out similar synthesis of Al, hi and other nitride based compounds. PECVD hydrogenated amorphous silicon nitride thin films are studied as

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the formation, characterisation and application of doped surface layers in hydrogenated amorphous silicon, a-Si:H. In this study, a-Si:H films have been deposited using a plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD) system and have been doped using ion implantation. In order to determine the efficiency of implantation doping various ion species, ion doses, and ion energies were made by direct implantation of impurities at low energies. Coupled with the annealing effect, the effect of doping on damage recovery has been studied. It has been shown that there is

Abstract:
Polymer functional groups have critical impacts upon physical, chemical and mechanical properties, and thus affect the specific applications of the polymer. Functionalization of cellulose esters and ethers has been under extensive investigation for applications including drug delivery, cosmetics, food ingredients, and automobile coating. In oral delivery of poorly water-soluble drugs, amorphous solid dispersion (ASD) formulations have been used, prepared by forming miscible blends of polymers and drugs to inhibit crystallization and enhance bioavailability of the drug. One of the advantages of structured particles is that they can be synthesized with either a solid core (albeit soft or hard) or a liquid core (of varying viscosity). This adds to the versatility of structured particles and their relevance to a majority of industrial and commercial endapplications.

In-situ x-ray photoemission (XPS) and ex-situ FTIR studies of nanoporous organosilicate glass (OSG) films point to the separate roles of radicals vs. VUV photons in the carbon abstraction. The studies indicate that reaction with O2 in presence of VUV photons (~123 nm) result in significant carbon abstraction within the bulk and that the kinetics of this process is diffusion-limited. In contrast, OSG exposed to atomic O (no VUV) results in Si-C bond scission and Si-O bond formation, but this process is self-limiting after formation of ~1 nm thick SiO2 surface layer that inhibits further diffusi

Three distinct heterogeneous polymer modification reactions are explored in this work. The first is a bulk reaction commonly conducted on polyolefins—the free radical addition of maleic anhydride. This reaction was run using supercritical carbon dioxide (SC CO2) as the solvent. The second was the chemical surface modification of an amorphous fluorocopolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and a perfluorodioxole monomer (Teflon AF). Several reactions were explored to reduce the surface of the fluorocopolymer for the enhancement of wettability. The last modification was also on Teflon AF and involved the
