Abstract:

Amos On Bourbon Street collects in one document my most recent poetry about family, the South, love, death, nature, religion, and music. The poems relate my observations of the world and my interaction with the world. These poems question and explore the transcendence, permanence, and mutability of life and death by weaving through a poetic labyrinth that is often surreal and sometimes tangible.

Hamborg, Graham. "Interpretation of the reasons for judgment in Amos 2.6-16 in the redactional compositions underlying the Amos-text." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2009. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/10859/.

Full text
Abstract:
This redaction-critical study interprets the reasons for judgment in Amos 2.6-16 in the literary context of each of the redactional compositions which, I argue, underlie the Amos-text. It is proposed that the Amos-text is both a theological work and a tractate of social criticism. In the earlier redactional compositions the dominant reasons for judgment concern mistreatment of the weak. In the later redactional compositions these are overshadowed, in terms of length of text, by more theological reasons for judgment; however, these strengthen, rather than weaken, the force of the older reasons for judgment. After an introductory first chapter, Chapter 2 describes and defends the methodology employed, and establishes the terminology of “composition” and “redactional composition”. Chapter 3 makes proposals concerning the compositional history of the Amos-text, attributing each unit to one of four redactional compositions. This chapter builds on the significant works of Hans W Wolff and Jörg Jeremias, following one or both of them at many points. Chapter 4 then describes the structural, linguistic and thematic coherence of each redactional composition in order to confirm the likelihood of its existence, and to note perspectives or significant themes relevant to the interpretation of the whole composition, including 2.6-16. Chapter 5 addresses two issues pertinent to the interpretation of Amos 2.6-16. Firstly, the relationship of Amos 2.8 to verses in the so-called Book of the Covenant is explored in the light of current scholarly views concerning its dating; its relationship to verses in Deuteronomy 24 is also considered. Secondly, the question of whether 2.10-12 exhibits Deuteronomistic influence is examined. Chapter 6 then conducts an exegesis of Amos 2.6-16 in each of the redactional compositions underlying the Amos-text, with particular attention paid to the reasons for judgment. The final chapter summarises the argument, draws conclusions, and notes possible areas of future study.

Abstract:

Mattingly, Timothy Scott. "Measurement of surface layer turbulence above AMOS." Thesis, Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/43780.

Full text
Abstract:
Temperature fluctuations in the atmosphere severely limit the angular resolution of earth bound observation facilities to around 1 arcsecond. This corresponds to an effective, coherent, aperture size of 10 cm even though the telescope may have a 2-4 m primary mirror. Understanding the spatial and temporal distribution of atmospheric optical turbulence is essential to maximize the performance of large astronomical telescopes. This thesis made use of a 5 KHz high frequency, short range Doppler acoustic sounder to investigate the first 100 meters of the mountain boundary layer turbulence above the Air Force Maui Observation Site, AMOS, Haleakala, Hi. These measurements were part of a coordinated site evaluation for a proposed 4 m telescope to be built at AMOS in the near future. Tentative results revealed significant layering, 15-20 m and occasionally thicker, in the turbulent surface layers above AMOS. Additionally, a comparison of two proposed construction sites near the top of Haleakala showed that the turbulent surface layer tends to follow the contours of the mountain.

Choi, In-Ki. "A rhetorical analysis of the book of Amos." Thesis, University of Manchester, 1999. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.524673.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the present thesis is to investigate rhetorical features of the Book of Amos with a view to identifying the message and meaning intended by the prophet Amos in his authentic passages. The purpose is not only to identify the prophet's rhetorical goal in his ' rhetorical situation', but also ultimately to explicate the meaning of his message in his historical situation. In examining its rhetorical features, the rhetorical analysis of the present thesis attempts to clarify how the prophet Amos fabricated the text in rhetorical structures and how he built up his rhetoric to convey his message in the book. In the introduction, the thesis investigates the types of rhetorical-critical discipline which also illustrate the history of rhetorical criticism. It also raises problems in the rhetorical-critical disciplines of Old Testament studies and the Book of Amos. It suggests the four steps of rhetorical analysis as its method of approach. Those consist of the investigations of: 1) the rhetorical structures(syntactic and syntagmatic, and mimetic dimension), 2) literary functions (semantic dimension), 3) rhetorical functions ( ':Message-Analysis'; pragmatic dimension), and 4) rhetorical natures(syntactic and syntagmatic, linear compositional macro-structural dimension), in the rhetorical units of the book of Amos. It also suggests that the book is divided into the four literary/rhetorical units; chs.1-2, 3-4, 5-6, and 7-9. In order to identify the message and meaning of the Book of Amos in his rhetorical and historical situation, the third and fourth steps investigate the prophet's rhetorical strategies through which he intended to pursue an effective conveying of his message in the Book of Amos. Of the two, the fourth step, in particular, attempts to identify how Amos designed the sections and subsections to perform rhetorical functions in the macro-structure of the book, and how he fabricated the text with the elements, according to their 'rhetorical natures' in the text, i.e., 'rhetorical sections' and 'message-sections.' For this purpose, chapter 2 of the thesis establishes the criteria through verifying their validity in the Minor Prophets. The thesis demonstrates, through the four-step rhetorical analysis, that chs.5-6 are designed to function as the 'message-section' of the book on which Amos intended to lay more emphasis than on other sections in formulating his message. The three other sections, chs. 1-2, 3-4, 7-9, are designed to function as the ' rhetorical sections', which are used for forming the framework of his rhetoric in the pursuit of the effective conveying of his message. The thesis suggests that the prophet pursued his rhetorical goal in resolving or modifying the historical exigence of social disorder caused by the perversion of justice in which his prophetic task emerged. Hence, it proposes as its conclusion that, in performing his prophetic task to deliver the message through drawing a rhetorical impact upon the audience in the pragmatic dimension. he encouraged the audience to take action for the resolution or modification of the historical exigence in his historical rhetorical situation, particularly by giving the exhortations to justice as 'the primary Message' (5:4-6, 14-15, and 24) in 'the message-section' (chs.5-6).

Abstract:
Thesis (DTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2003
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The issue of the identification of the audience/s of the final chapter (chapter 9) in the book of Amos is currently moot. That is, there currently are as many opinions as there are scholars who have in some form or the other made some inference as to the identification of the audience. The same is true for the preceding chapters in the book. The reasons for the divergence in opinions as to the identification of the audience varies from the methods chosen for engaging the text to reasons that are not always easy to identify. Yet the opinions are often freel y shared in the monographs, commentaries, dissertations and scholarly journal articles. This dissertation aims to follow an approach that is more interpretatively accountable and responsible in dealing with the identification of the audience/s of Amos and in particular chapter 9. This goal is best achieved by interacting with the scholars as they have recorded their findings in the various scholarly publications while engaging the text with a suitable method. The method chosen by this study for achieving the intended purpose is the multidimensional approach of Vernon Robbins, termed socio-rhetorical criticism. This approach aids in the study of the text by uncovering the various "textures" of the text. These textures are identified by Robbins as innertexture, intertexture, social and cultural texture, ideological texture and sacred texture. As socio-rhetorical criticism does not overtly take into account the influence of the reader in the production of the meaning of the text and how this influences interpretative results, it would be necessary to investigate how to incorporate the influence of reader-response methodology to make the results more responsible and accountable. The majority of scholarly opinion sees at least three possible audiences identifiable within the book of Amos. These audiences are identified as eighth, seventh and sixth century in setting. Yet the reasons for such identification is often not clear and greatly debated. Differences in opinion have often resulted in religious questions being raised regarding the authority and intention of the text should these various audience identifications be accurate. This study seeks to understand and identify the main influences that determines the conclusions on various audience identification and present an approach that would be more suitable to answer the question more clearly. The particular influence that this study demonstrates is the reinvention of texts by identifying the layers of reinterpretation contained in the text by identifying its implied audience/so It is this identification that allows the text to be applied to current readers as they identify with the process of reinvention and ethically accountable interpretation.

Abstract:
The purpose of efficiency increasing methods is the reduction of the computing time required to solve radiation transport problems using Monte Carlo techniques. Besides additional geometry manipulation and source biasing this includes in particular the weight windows technique as the most important variance reduction method developed in the 1950s. To date the difficulty of this technique is the calculation of appropriate weight windows. In this work a generator for spatial and energy dependent weight windows based on the forward-adjoint generator by T.E. BOOTH and J.S. HENDRICKS is developed and implemented in the radiation transport program AMOS. With this generator the weight windows are calculated iteratively and set automatically. Furthermore the generator is able to autonomously adapt the energy segmentation. The functioning is demonstrated by means of the deep penetration problem of photon radiation. In this case the efficiency can be increased by several orders of magnitude. With energy dependent weight windows the computing time is decreased additionally by approximately one order of magnitude. For a practice-oriented problem, the irradiation of a dosimeter for individual monitoring, the efficiency is only improved by a factor of four at best. Source biasing and geometry manipulation result in an equivalent improvement. The use of energy dependent weight windows proved to be of no practical relevance

Thang, Robert Khua Hnin. "The theology of the land in Amos 7-9." Thesis, University of Gloucestershire, 2011. http://eprints.glos.ac.uk/3244/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to give an account of Amos' specific contribution to the Old Testament's theology of land. It seeks to explore the theme of land as a key aspect of the background to Amos' prophecy, and also of the book's overall theology of the relationship between YHWH, Israel, and the world. In Amos, the language about land is extensive, including terms and ideas such as Zion, Carmel, YHWH's bringing of Israel into the land, references to various sanctuaries and places, harvest and famine, other geographical indications, the relationship between the northern kingdom and Judah, and references to the land of other nations. The topic of land, however, has often been studied incidentally to other themes, but less often as a theological topic in its own right. This thesis shows how deeply embedded the topic of land is in Amos, and argues this by showing its relation to other theological themes, including Zion, the covenant-election tradition, Israel, creation, salvation, Sabbath, justice, and eschatology. That is, the study of land in Amos has wider dimensions. The study is therefore set in a wide context in the Old Testament, and raises questions about the relation of Amos to other important theological traditions about land. The study is essentially theological analysis. The argument will follow an essentially synchronic reading. It will also employ textual, literary and historical criticism, and the thesis analyzes carefully the text of Amos 7-9 for its literary coherence and inner relationships. It attempts to demonstrate what theological assumptions are made about the land in each section in Amos 7-9, and the relationship of Amos' land-theology to other Old Testament theological traditions. While the findings are set in the context of the book as a whole, the study focuses on this one section of the book, chapters 7-9, in order to explore the topic in close detail.

Wilgus, Jason Blair. "Judgment on Israel : Amos 3-6 read as a unity." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/6428.

Full text
Abstract:
The last 100 years have seen biblical studies practically dominated by diachronic/historical methodologies, Amos studies have a long tradition of being read within a diachronic framework. The result of this has been an unfortunate fragmentation of the text. Within the last 40 years or so there has been a resurgence of literary studies that treat the text wholistically. Nevertheless, in research that has been done in literary studies a divergence with regard to the structure of the book as well as the function and meaning of some of its units still exists. For this reason it is necessary to approach the problem from a fresh perspective. The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate the literary unity of Amos 3-6. In my work I show not only the legitimacy, but also the superiority of a synchronic reading of Amos 3-6 when reading the text as a whole. The book of Amos enjoys perhaps the most scholarly interest among all of the twelve prophets, which has resulted in a large body of secondary literature. Within the book of Amos, chapters 3-6 provide a closed unit which contains the major message of the book. For this reason, these four chapters afford a suitable text to apply my reading as well as a platform on which to dialogue with secondary sources. The methodology used in this thesis is a close reading of the present form of the Masoretic Text. A major part of the work is structural analysis. Through the analysis I was able to identify meaningful units that I used for my reading of the text. In this reading I looked at keywords and semantic fields, themes, repetition, parallelism, imagery, speakers and addressees, rhetorical techniques and the overall flow of the text. In my study I have shown how Amos 3-6 should be divided into three independent yet closely related units: Amos 3:1-15; 4:1-13 and 5:1-6:14. Recognition of the structure and craftsmanship of the text draws out the singular message of Amos 3-6; that Israel could no longer avoid Yahweh’s judgment for their oppression of the poor. Even if my main conclusion is similar both to scholars who work in diachronic as well as synchronic studies, my conclusion treats the entirety of Amos 3-6 and concludes that all units within it are vital to the whole and contribute to this message of judgment. My thesis offers a solution to the fragmentary text resultant from diachronic methods as well as a corrective to synchronic readings that inadequately structure the book, resulting in an unsatisfactory overall picture of the structure and meaning of Amos 3-6.

Abstract:
This theses deals with the cycle “The Labyrinth of the World and Paradise of the Heart” for organ and the reciter, composed by Petr Eben who was inspired by the written artwork of the same name by Johannes Amos Comenius. Eben’s String quartet based on the same literary work is also mentioned. The content of this thesis includes the biography of both authors, Eben and Comenius. In order to achieve a better insight into the Comenius’s work, the outline of the contemporary political development and its philosophical and religious background is also included. The contents of several different passages of Comenius’s text are described in more details. These were used by Eben as the foundation for the organ improvisations. The description of individual musical parts of the cycle is also introduced. This theses also includes the inspirational sources of Eben’s cycle, especially the Comenius’s spiritual songs published in the Amsterdam Hymn Book, as well as the comparison between Eben’s manuscript and available printed versions of his cycle, and available audio recordings of his work. Last but not least this work also mentions the works of other Czech composers of the second half of the 20th century (i.e. J. Krcek, M. Raichl, A. Tucapsky) who were inspired by the Comenius’s creations (not only by the “Labyrinth”).

We thought it will be interesting to have a tool that can display the result of an AMOSQL query graphically (e.g. Chart) that will help the viewer to better understand the result of the query. It will also serve the purpose of aiding the teaching staff in the University to better formulate course assignments for related courses. Our work will certainly aid the faculty members and other students who may be interested in continuing through this project and make it an extensive library which can represent data results from AMOSII queries as other types of charts. Through this project we have developed a java library that can take the result of any AMOSQL query and display the results graphically in six different types of charts(graphs). We have used SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) and X3D (Extensible 3D Graphics) for generating the graphs. SVG is a specification language using XML (Extensible Markup Language) file format for describing two-dimensional vector graphics. The SVG specification is an open standard and the most recent version (1.1) is a World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) recommendation. It is supported by all the major browsers; that mean the query result can be displayed on any device that has an Internet browser. X3D is the ISO standard XML-based file format for representing 3D computer graphics, it is the successor to the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML). It supports the ability to encode the scene using XML syntax as well as the Open Inventor-like syntax of VRML97, or binary formatting, and enhanced application programming interfaces (APIs). However it requires plug-in for regular browsers to be able to open X3D scene. The X3D has been used to generate the 3D Plot graph function.

Osuagwu, Tochukwu. "An ideological-critical interpretation of justice and righteousness in Amos 5." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/63000.

Abstract:
This dissertation attempts to critically analyse the effect of ideology on the text of Amos 5 and how this impacts on hermeneutics. It begins with a look at the historical-political-sociological situations of Amos’ time. It also looks at ideology and the text and the effect of ideology both on the writer and the interpreter. Chapter 3 and 4 are exegetical and rhetorical readings of the texts of Amos 5. Chapter 4 focuses on the concept of justice and righteousness in Amos 5 and also in the entire book of Amos. Lastly, Chapter 5 looks at the concept of justice and righteousness and its contemporary relevance. In course of the study, it was discovered that time and experience play an important role in the Bible experience. Further, it was discovered that both the writer and the interpreter are considerably under the influence of ideology. None is exempt from it. This study therefore is about the struggles that a modern interpreter encounter in course of doing biblical interpretation and application. Since the texts is an ancient and was written at a time different from now. It implies therefore that contemporary interpreter has to interpret the text honestly in other for biblical message to be relevant to the present.

Abstract:
Nearly everyone I know has a relationship with something in popular culture, whether it is Buffy the Vampire Slayer, amassing The Astonishing X-Men comics, or collecting every version of every Star Wars movie. Relationships and pop culture: couldn’t that make an autoethnography? This is a short version of my relationship with a band, Daniel Amos. I am not in Daniel Amos. I don’t know the members of the band (although I am Facebook friends with them now). I first heard them in 1982 serendipitously. Or maybe it was destiny. Either way, they opened my eyes to the wonders, doubts, and excesses of my life, critiqued my faith, and brought me joy. I feel like I know them, and they me. Thirty-one years after first hearing them, I realize our relationship is one of the longest I have had. We grew up and are growing older together.

Avran, Ziva. Paris, INALCO, 1998. http://www.theses.fr/1998INAL0001.

Abstract:
Born in Jerusalem in 1931, Amos Oz publishes regularly since 1961 short stories, novels, essays and articles. The thesis is dedicated to his fiction (1961-1994) and points out the most important stylistic particularities in his language. The work is composed of four chapters. The first one explores orality and literacy, spoken and written language in narration or direct and indirect speech. The second one analises semantic values of metaphors and poetic comparisons. The third one describes the function of most important rhythmical patterns. The last one is a free interpretation of lexical and metaphorical repetitions and their role in the text strategy

On the contrary the pedagogical principles of Jan Amos Comenius, few studies have been made about his involvement with the purpose and usefulness of the new science. However, based on the Via Lucis, book that Comenius wrote between 1641 and 1642 when he was in England due to the invitation of Samuel Hartlib and that dedicated to the Royal Society of London in 1668, this study allows to evaluate the interrelation between some Protestant presuppositions and natural philosophy seventeenth century. So, wishing to collaborate with studies in History of Science, this research presents an analysis of the intercourse that pervade: the involvement of Comenius with the seventeenth-century England; the theological premises of the author that legitimizing his support and the Protestant participation in the development of new science; the method to capture, organize and disseminate the universal knowledge from the Comenius Pan-harmony. All seems to indicate that this book of Comenius, rarely studied, not only focuses his dream of Universal Reformation, but the aroused expectations among the promoters of the new science, when he was in London. Such expectations also seem to reveal that both, Protestantism as the new science, longed for universal knowledge from the Nature investigation, the educational development, the social rigging and advancement of useful science
