Abstract:

David Werner Amram III, born in Philadelphia in 1930 is a celebrated American composer whose works have increasingly gained worldwide attention. His compositions embrace many genres including incidental music, film scores, symphonies, concertos, sonatas, instrumental trios, quartets, cantatas and operas as well as songs. One of Amram's earliest published songs, Pull My Daisy, is from his musical score for the experimental film of the same name. The song, text by Allen Ginsberg, Neal Cassady and Jack Kerouac, is set in a jazz style. Twelve of his songs, published in three collections are drawn either from his incidental music for Shakespeare plays or from his chamber opera, Twelfth Night. Another group written for baritone voice, wind and string quintets is entitled Three Songs for America. Trail of Beauty for mezzosoprano, oboe and orchestra contains four settings of Native American texts. The first chapter of this paper provides a biography of the composer. Succeeding chapters give some analysis of representative songs from each published group, background to their composition, texts, information from reviews where available, and the composers own comments from telephone interviews with the writer. An appendix contains brief illustrations of music from representative songs. It is observed that Amram's multifaceted musical interests have led him to write appealing and interesting music, both instrumental and vocal.

Abstract:

This document examines David Amram's (b. 1930) diverse compositional style, as represented by his Concerto for Violin and Orchestra (1974). Amram's unique background as a performer in various genres allows him to blend styles seamlessly. He highlights the use of a wide range of styles in this work, which makes this concerto a significant work in the twentieth century, American violin concerto repertoire as well as bridging the classical, jazz, and world genres creating a truly American style of music. This document examines how these influences--including classical, jazz, world music, and "Beat Generation" artists--have influenced David Amram's compositional style as represented in his Concerto for Violin and Orchestra. Biographical information about David Amram, including his life, compositional output, and a brief musical analysis with an emphasis on performance information useful to violinists are presented. In addition an interview with Amram was conducted, in which his compositional style and in particular his Concerto for Violin and Orchestra was discussed. A transcript of the interview is provided in the Appendix of this document.

This paper reports on the design of a B-band flight termination antenna (FTA) for use on the Advanced Medium Range Air to Air Missile (AMRAAM). The antenna is a low profile structure composed of an etched circuit board measuring 1.6 by 10.0 by 0.010 inches mounted inside a 0.17 inch deep cavity formed in the back of the AMRAAM harness cover. There is a metallic cover over the cavity which connects to the metalized harness cover constituting a ground plane for the antenna. The antenna is easily tuned through use of two metallic slugs in close proximity to the ends of the antenna elements. The active circuit of the antenna is composed of a 3-element folded dipole photoetched from copper clad Duroid. The center element is driven through a microstrip matching transformer which is printed on the opposite side of the antenna elements. A quarter wave open circuited stub is also printed opposite the elements to provide a virtual short such that no physical contacts are necessary between the transformer and the driven element. The matching transformer connects to the 50 ohm source at the center of the antenna through a side projecting microstrip tab which in turn is connected to a semi-rigid coaxial line. The antenna exhibits improved bandwidth and excellent pattern coverage, particularly in the critical roll plane. All of the antenna parameters will be presented and discussed.

The Advanced Medium-Range Air-To-Air Missile (AMRAAM) is one of our newest additions to tactical weaponry. Recently the Pacific Missile Test Center (PMTC) was given the responsibility to develop a new telemetry (TM) package for the AMRAAM that is warhead compatible. The difficulty of this undertaking can best be appreciated if one examines a sketch of the missile as shown in figure 1. Note that the sketch reveals a harness cover opposite top dead center (TDC) for flight that extends over 2/3 the length of the missile. Within this cover is housed all interconnect electrical cabling for the missile. It was also within this harness cover that PMTC had to mount the entire TM package including the S-band antenna. Of necessity there had to be an increase in the height of the harness cover in order to accommodate the TM package. However, this increase was held to only 0.10 inches resulting in no significant change to the flight profile. This report deals only with the design and development of the harness cover mounted TM antenna.

Abstract:

The 800 km2 Amran Valley is a basin lying in an intermountain graben produced by tectonic movement associated with the Red Sea rifting. The basin is filled by quaternary alluvial deposits to depths of300 m. The Amran Valley quaternary section constitutes the region's only known aquifer, the Valley aquifer. Groundwater occurs under water table conditions (unconfined aquifer) in the uppermost layer and under artesian conditions (semi-confined aquifer) for the lower layer. The aquifers are replenished underflow from wadis and surface inflow. The Valley aquifer suffers from severe overdrafts, which caused depressed water levels in the whole aquifer. Constructing a numerical flow model for (simulating) steady-state and transient-state conditions to better understand the hydro logic system of the basin is the main objective of this study. The steady-state condition was run for 1973 to produce the annual initial heads for that year, which was used as initial configuration heads for the transient-state conditions for the period 197 4 to 1977. Annual outflows as underflow from the basin to Wadi Attaf were estimated at 5.5 Mm3/year (NORDEP). The ground-water losses were estimated as 42% (NORDEP) from the total pumped irrigation, which is considered a low estimation, and it is increased to 60%. The surface recharge to the aquifer was estimated as 11 Mm3/year (NORDEP); it is considered high estimation and is reduced to 0.5 Mm3/year. Further investigations are needed to improve the steady-state model and recalibrate transient simulation for predicting responses of the hydro logic system to climate and anthropogenic stresses for the last time. Improved information on hydraulic parameters like hydraulic conductivity and transmissivity are needed to improve the model.

Cette thèse de doctorat engage une étude approfondie des œuvres d’Edmond Amran El Maleh qui vise à rendre compte de la singularité de son écriture. Celle-ci se détache en effet de l’ensemble habituellement défini comme littérature francophone marocaine aussi bien par ses thèmes que par sa poétique. L’écriture d’El Maleh se caractérise d’abord par une approche sensible du monde et de l’environnement marocain fondateur- L’écrivain restitue des pans majeurs de l’Histoire du Maroc et de la communauté judéo-marocaine dans des narrations qui procèdent à coup de résurgences mémorielles oscillant entre réalisme et fonctionnalité complexe- Les composantes identitaires multiples de cet écrivain né en 1917 à Safi, dans une famille juive originaire d’Essaouira, ancien professeur de philosophie, ancien militant du Parti Communiste marocain avant l’indépendance, sont autant de motivation de l’étoilement et de la non-linéarité de cette écriture affranchie de toutes contraintes structurales ou spatio-temporelles. Notre étude cherche à cerner les traits majeurs de cette poétique : imbrication des langues, travail et signifiance du rythme, des images et des modalités de transmission mémorielles. L’écriture d’El Maleh est celle d’un poète sensible refusant la rationalité simplificatrice- même si elle inclut une incessante réflexion sur la littérature. En fin de compte, la coloration dominante qui donne son unité à cette écriture protéiforme, provient de l’aura mystique (paradoxalement assumée par un laïc déclaré) dont elle se nourrit. This dissertation is a study of Edmond Amran El Maleh’s work and more particularly of the singularity of his writing. El Maleh distinguishes himself from what we usually think of as francophone Morrocan literature, both thematically and poetically. El Maleh’s writing is defined first of all by a sensitive approach to the world and to his initial Moroccan environment. The writer restores parts of Morocco’s history and of the story of the Moroccan Jewish community in narrations which evoke memories in what is sometimes realist mode and sometimes poetic. El Maleh was born in Safi in 1917 to a Jewish family from Essaouira; he is a former philosophy teacher and an ex-member of the Moroccan Communist Party, which he left before independence. These multiple identities nourish his writing and contribute to the abolishment of all structural, spatial or temporal constraints. This study seeks to define the major aspects of El Maleh’s poetics: the imbrication of languages, the work and the significance of rhythm, the images and the manner of transmitting memories. El Maleh’s writing is one of a sensitive poet who refuses simplicity, even if this includes a constant meditation on his writing. In the end, what gives the reader a sense of unity actually comes from the mystical aura on which it feeds. Inherited from an ancestral hybrid cultural fund and adapted to the needs of creation, it gives El Maleh’s work its undeniable spiritual depth

Le pays des Ai͏̈t-Ba-Amrane offre un exemple d'une société et d'un espace rural en crise. L'équilibre des systèmes géographiques archai͏̈ques fondés il y a quelques décennies est aujourd'hui plus que jamais en état de déséquilibre. Les vagues de sécheresse qu'à connues la région dès la fin des années 1970 n'ont fait qu'aggraver la situation. Les systèmes agro-sylvo-pastoraux se sont trouvés à la merci des aléas climatiques et des contraintes du milieu. L'arganier n'est pas épargné aux destruction, les étendues des arganeraies sont de plus en plus fragilisées. L'élevage qui était la base de la vie des montagnards est en déclin et laisse de plus en plus la place à un spectaculaire développement de la culture du cactus. Les systèmes fondés sur la maîtrise de l'eau d'irrigation sont en pleine crise, les khettaras, les sources et les puits ont vu leurs débits sévèrement repliés. Face à ces nouvelles conditions du milieu, les ba-amraniens se sont trouvées dans l'obligation de quitter les villages. C'est ainsi que les vagues d'émigration ont touché la population la plus valide, ce qui a privé les activités locales de main-d'œuvre et a engendré des mutations profondes qui ont touché l'espace et la société ba-amraniens
The country of Ai͏̈t-Ba-Amrane offers the example of a company and rural areas in crisis. The balance or the founded antiquated geographical systems a few decades ago is today more than ever in imbalance. The waves of dryness which the area knew as of the end of 1970 worsened the situation. The agro-sylvo-pastral systems were victims of the climatic risks and the constraints of the medium. The arganier not escaped the massasres, the extents of the arganeraies are weakened more and more. The rering which was the base of the life of the mountain dwellers is declining and leaves more and more the place to a spectacular development of the culture of the cactus. The systems based on the control of the water of irrigation are in full crisis, will " khettaras " them, the sources and the wells saw thier severely folded up flows. Vis-a-vis these new conditions of the medium, Ba-amraniens must leave the village. Abstract:

Cette thèse est une analyse comparée des approches théoriques et des méthodes de recensement élaborées par Alois Musil. Elle se fonde sur des sources historiographiques et archéologiques, ainsi qu’une analyse de la personnalité d’Alois Musil en tant qu’archéologue, dans le contexte des travaux scientifiques conduits au Proche-Orient. Cette thèse compare les résultats de ses travaux pionniers dans les domaines de l’archéologie et de l’anthropologie, avec les méthodes de recherche élaborées par plusieurs autres chercheurs, ainsi qu’avec leurs systèmes respectifs permettant la documentation des sites et leurs apports à la connaissance contemporaine. Bien que Musil ne se considérait pas lui-même comme archéologue, ses découvertes extraordinaires, de même que ses compétences en matière de documentation et d’interprétation ont permis ses écrits de traverser le temps et d’être toujours abondamment cités aujourd’hui. Toutefois, ce travail aborde également les limites de l’exploration de sites supposés Romains par Musil, dans la mesure o un certain nombre de lieux, classifiés comme Romains voire ‘indubitablement Romains’, n’étaient en réalité qu’une fraction du réseau résidentiel omeyyade à Bilād al-Shām. Par ailleurs, les découvertes archéologiques de Musil, en particulier celle de QuṣayrʿAmra, furent étroitement liées aux Bédouins. A ce titre, cette thèse aborde également le versant anthropologique de son œuvre, et sa contribution au développement de la recherche ethnographique sur le Proche-Orient. Enfin, ce travail décrit le développement des recherches sur les forteresses Omeyyades, ainsi que l’évolution des hypothèses et des méthodes développées par Musil. Elle comporte une base de données incluant les sites archéologiques visités et documentés par celui-ci. Elle repose aussi sur la comparaison des classifications et des recueils de données élaborés par Musil, avec les recherches de ses contemporains et, lorsque cela est possible, avec les travaux les plus récents
This thesis is a comparative analysis of Alois Musil’s theoretical approaches and recording methods, based on historical and archaeological sources and the evaluation of the personality of Alois Musil as an archaeologist in context of scholarly work conducted in the Near East. It compares the results of his pioneering work in the field of archaeology and anthropology with the methods of research of several scholars, within the range of their work, with their system of site documentation and the contributions of their results to contemporary knowledge and revised prospections and excavations. Musil did not consider himself an archaeologist, nevertheless because of his extraordinary discoveries, documentary and interpretative abilities he is quoted to this day. The work is dealing with Musil’s exploration of the Roman limes as well, because some localities classified by Musil and his contemporaries as Roman or even, undoubtedly Roman were in reality a part of the network of Umayyad residential structures in Bilad al-Sham. Musil’s archaeological discoveries, including his discovery of Qusayr Amra, were bound with Bedouins, so this work also deals with Musil as an anthropologist and the developmet of ethnographic research in the Near East. The work describes the development of research of Umayyad castles, Musil’s hypothesis and the evolution of research, and it contains a database of archaeological sites visited and documented by Musil, the comparison of classification and documentation with the researches of his contemporaries and, where possible, with modern researches

Dans notre corpus, la structuration des temps verbaux se caracterise par le retrait du passe simple et par la predominance de l'imparfait. Ainsi, l'immuabilite et la cognitivite l'emportent sur la mobilite et l'evenementialite. En outre le temps enoncif est marque par la delinearisation ; de meme que la temporalite enonciative se trouve desarticulee. Le texte recuse donc la chronologisation et valorise le mouvement concentrique. In our corpus, the tense of verbs are structurally caracterized by a predominance of the past perfect and a weak presence of the past tense (simple past). Therefore, immuability and cognitivity are more dominant than mobility and evenementiality. More over, enonciative time is not linear and temporality is desarticuled as well. The text refuses, hence, the chronology and valorises, on the contrary, a concentric mouvement. However, on a semantic level, it strengthens the oppositions and conciliates the contraries, which gives its polyvalent identity and its multidimensional aspect

Dairy farming as one part of agriculture has thousands of year’s history. The increasingdemands of dairy products and the rapid development of technology bring dairyfarming tremendous changes. Started by first hand milking, dairy farming goes throughvacuum bucket milking, pipeline milking, and now parlors milking. The automatic andtechnical milking system provided farmer with high-efficiency milking, effective herdmanagement and above all booming income.DeLaval Automatic Milking Rotary (AMRTM) is the world’s leading automatic milkingrotary system. It presents an ultimate combination of technology and machinerywhich brings dairy farming with significant benefits. AMRTM technical milking capacityis 90 cows per hour. However, constrained by farm management, cow’s condition andsystem configuration, the actual capacity is lower than technical value. In this thesis, anoptimization system is designed to analyze and improve AMRTM performance. The researchis focusing on cow behavior and AMRTM robot timeout. Through applying knowledgediscover from database (KDD), building machine learning cow behavior predictionsystem and developing modeling methods for system simulation, the optimizing solutionsare proposed and validated.

De tradition pastorale, la plaine de Bled ̀amra (Gafsa) à l'instar des Hautes steppes tunisiennes auxquelles elle appartient, a été le théâtre de séries de mutations, qui ont touché les structures économiques et sociales, suite à l'application de la privatisation des terres collectives amorcée en 1973. La recherche, dont la problématique centrale s'articule autour des effets socio-spatiales de cette politique foncière, s'organise en trois parties, privilégiant chacune une échelle temporelle ou spatiale. La politique foncière est, en premier lieu, abordée globalement à travers l'examen des politiques appliquées dans les terres communales et collectives des pays des deux rives de la Méditerranée tout en mettant l'accent sur les pays du Maghreb. Nous présentons ensuite le cadre conceptuel et l'approche méthodologique qui nous ont permis de produire et d'analyser les données nécessaires, avant d'étudier le champ géographique à travers ses trois composantes : humaine, physique et administrative. Dans la seconde partie, sont mis en évidence la politique foncière tunisienne et son application dans les Hautes steppes ainsi que la mise en oeuvre de la privatisation des terres collectives à Bled ̀amra : les procédures, les conséquences et le bilan. L'analyse des dynamiques sociales et celle des transformations économiques, objet de la dernière partie, posent la question de la gestion et de l'exploitation des ressources naturelles. Il s'agit donc de saisir au plus près les effets de cette politique foncière libérale, mis en exergue auparavant, sur la société, l'économie et l'environnement dans une région fragile et pauvre
As a pastoral tradition, the plain of Bled ̀amra (Gafsa) following the example of the High Tunisian Steppes to which it belongs, was the theatre of series of alterations which affected the economical and social structures, following the application of the privatization of the collective lands from1973. The current research whose central problem articulates around socio-spatial effects of this land policy, is organized in three parts, privileging each a temporal or spatial scale. The land policy is first of all approached globally through the exam of policies applied on the municipal and collective lands of the Mediterranean countries, while emphasizing the countries of the Maghreb. Then, we present the abstract frame and the methodological approach that allowed us to produce and to analyse the necessary data, before studying the geographic field through its three : human, physical and administrative constituents. In the second part, the Tunisian land policy and its application in the High Steppes are put in evidence as well as the application of the privatization of the collective lands of Bled ̀amra : the procedures, the consequences and the balance. The analysis of social dynamics and that economical alterations, object of the last part, raise the question of the management and exploitation of the natural resources. It is so, a question of seizing in closer the effects of this liberal land policy, previously applied on the society, economy and environment in a fragile and poor region

Abstract:

Quotidiennement, pour choisir une action tout en s'adaptant de manière flexible à notre environnement nous devons utiliser des processus cognitifs de haut niveau appelés : les fonctions exécutives. Il existe trois fonctions exécutives principales : le contrôle inhibiteur, la mémoire de travail et la flexibilité cognitive. Ces fonctions exécutives sont impliquées dans toutes les activités cognitives et dans toutes les interactions sociales. Elles constituent également un prédicteur dans la réussite scolaire et professionnelle. Ces fonctions exécutives se développent de l'enfance jusqu'à l'âge adulte en lien avec la maturation cérébrale du cortex préfrontal. Étant donné leur rôle dans le développement cognitif et les apprentissages scolaires de nombreuses études ont tenté de déterminer (a) dans quelle mesure des entrainements permettent d'améliorer les capacités exécutives des enfants, des adolescents et des jeunes adultes et (b) dans quelle mesure améliorer les capacités exécutives à des effets bénéfiques pour d'autres capacités cognitives (transfert lointain). Si certaines études ont démontré des effets d'entrainements ciblés à la mémoire de travail, au contrôle inhibiteur ou à la flexibilité cognitive et des transferts potentiels dans des tâches non entrainées, il existe encore peu d'études sur les effets comportementaux d'un entrainement au contrôle inhibiteur chez les enfants d'âge scolaire et sur les mécanismes de neuroplasticité qui sous-tendent les améliorations potentielles des capacités d'inhibition. Dans cette thèse nous avons adopté une méthodologie expérimentale classique en psychologie des apprentissages pour évaluer les effets comportementaux et les effets sur la structure cérébrale (épaisseur corticale, surface, gyrification) d'un entrainement à l'inhibition de 5 semaines sur tablette. Soixante enfants de 9 à 10 ans ont donc participé à un prétest (Évaluation cognitive-1 et IRM-1), ont suivi un entrainement de 5 semaines, 15 minutes par jour, 5 jours par semaine à la maison (sur tablette tactile), et un posttest immédiat (à la fin de l'entrainement, Évaluation cognitive-2 et IRM-2). Nous avons comparé deux groupes d'enfants: un groupe entrainé au contrôle inhibiteur (groupe expérimental : Stroop et stop-signal) et un groupe entraîné à répondre à des questions de vocabulaire et de culture générale (groupe contrôle actif). Nous avons analysé (1) les effets de transfert proche et lointain induit par l'entrainement cognitif dans les deux groupes d'enfants, (2) la réceptivité à l'entrainement, c'est-à-dire : le taux de progression et l'influence de la motivation tout au long de l'entrainement sur les effets de transfert, et enfin (3) les changements macroscopiques observés au niveau anatomique chez les enfants suite à ces entrainements
Every day, to choose an action while adapting flexibly to our environment we have to use high-level cognitive processes called executive functions. There are three main executive functions: inhibitory control, working memory and cognitive flexibility. These executive functions are involved in all cognitive activities and social interactions. They are also a predictor of academic and professional success. These executive functions develop from childhood to adulthood in relation to the cerebral maturation of the prefrontal cortex. Given their role in cognitive development and school learning, many studies have attempted to determine (a) the extent to which training improve the executive abilities of children, adolescents, and young adults, and (b) to what extent improving executive abilities is beneficial for other cognitive abilities (far transfer). While some studies have demonstrated that working memory, inhibitory control or cognitive flexibility training produce near and far transfers, there are still a limited number of studies that investigated the behavioral effects of training inhibitory control in school-aged children and the neuroplasticity mechanisms that underlie potential improvements in inhibitory control abilities. In our study, we used an experimental method classically used in educational psychology to evaluate the effects on behavioral and on the brain structure (cortical thickness, surface area, gyrification) of a 5 weeks inhibition training on tablet. Sixty children from 9 to 10 years of age participated in a pretest (cognitive assessment-1 and MRI-1), followed by a 5-week training, 15 minutes a day, 5 days a week at home (on tablet), and to an immediate post-test (at the end of the training, Cognitive Assessment-2 and MRI-2). We compared two groups of children: a group in which inhibitory control was trained (experimental group: Stroop and stop-signal) and a group that was trained to answer vocabulary and general knowledge questions (active control group). We analyzed (1) the effects of near and far transfer induced by the cognitive training in both groups of children, (2) the receptivity to training, that is to say: the rate of progression and the influence of the motivation throughout the training on the transfer effects, and finally (3) the macroscopic changes observed at the anatomical level following these trainings
