Creation imagery in manuscripts made in the Middle Ages became a locus for visual experimentation as well as the expression of ideas about creativity. By examining representations of divine creation and illustrations of the creation stories in Genesis, this book links medieval ideas about creation, the characteristic of the Divine Creator, and the act of creation with themes in medieval thought about the work of medieval artists. Case studies from manuscripts illuminating the creation dating from the eleventh to the fourteenth century (Junius 11/The Cædmon Manuscript, Roda Bible & Ripoll Bible, Bible moralisées, Hamburg Bible, Holkhalm Bible) reveal self-reflective moments; where medieval artists relate artistic invention and theological debates about creation. This book traces the artists’ thinking in their own work and then contextualizes those visual cues within the context of philosophical arguments about the creation of the world. It also considers how Western medieval artists, in inventing original illuminations and experimenting with new representational modes, suggest potential analogies between their own work, God’s acts of creation, and nature’s generative force.

Interest in the first hunter-gatherer populations of Mexico has increased in the last fifteen years. Exploration of the Late Pleistocene localities involved in the early peopling of Mexico, including the discovery of new ones and reanalysis of known ones, and the application of new methods and techniques (e.g. AMS radiocarbon dating, stable isotopes, scanning electron microscopy, palaeobotanical analysis) have increased. Archaeozoology has contributed to this expansion by increasing the record of terrestrial vertebrates, improving understanding of the record and delimitation of distributional ranges of extinct species. There is now more information on the type of diet of some extinct herbivores and hypotheses about the status of local palaeoenvironments have been provided. Questions remain about the interactions between human migrations and the environments, specifically the degree of influence that humans had in the extinction of mega- and mesofaunas, and the diversity of subsistence strategies employed by hunter-gatherers in the Late Pleistocene.

Love at Last Sight is a history of dating in the modern metropolis. It opens with the seemingly simple question, “How did single people meet and fall in love in new big cities like Berlin at the turn of the century?” but what emerges from this investigation of daily newspapers, diaries, serial novels, advice literature, police records, and court cases is a world of dating and relationships that was anything but simple. The murder of Frieda Kliem, a young, enterprising seamstress who was using newspaper personal ads to find a husband—the story of which serves as the book’s central narrative—reveals the tremendous risk associated with modern approaches to love and dating. The risk of fraud, censure, or worse was ever present, especially for the many Berliners who strove for the stability of middle-class life but were outsiders to the social power structures of German society. Indeed, though the technologies and opportunities of the big city offered the best shot at finding love or intimate connection among the urban sea of strangers, availing oneself of them—pursuing a missed connection from the streetcar or using a newspaper personal ad—meant putting one’s livelihood, respectability, and life on the line. This was the romantic dilemma facing the vast majority of city dwellers at the turn of the century, and a great many chose to risk everything for some measure of connection and intimacy. This book explores their stories as a way of illuminating this core tension of modern, metropolitan life.

Die Ergebnisse des Projekts liefern nun erstmals profunde Daten über die Umsetzung des Kinderschutzauftrags bei Familien mit und ohne Migrationshintergrund und zeigen, an welchen Stellen sich die professionellen Herausforderungen unabhängig von einem Migrationshintergrund gleichen und wo Differenzierungen sowie spezifische Zugänge nötig sind. Von der Verdachtsmeldung, über den Erstkontakt, die Gefährdungseinschätzung bis hin zur Einleitung von Hilfen geben die erhobenen Daten Auskunft über Aspekte, die für die Weiterentwicklung der Kinderschutzarbeit unter migrationssensiblen Gesichtspunkten von Relevanz sind. Dabei gehen die einzelnen Kapitel auf unterschiedliche Phasen des Kinderschutzes wie den Erstkontakt und das sozialpädagogische Fallverstehen als Grundlage einer Gefährdungseinschätzung ein, ebenso auf den Umgang mit Sprachbarrieren. Es werden spezifische rechtliche Rahmenbedingungen wie das Ausländerrecht thematisiert, die Rolle der Kooperation und Vernetzung sowie die Herausforderung der Interkulturellen Öffnung als Organisationsentwicklungsprozess diskutiert. Die einzelnen Kapitel sind mit Anregungen und Beispielen versehen, die es den Lesenden ermöglichen, Ideen für die Umsetzung in der Praxis zu entwickeln. Dem Zuhören kommt im Unterricht in der Volksschule eine zentrale Rolle zu: sowohl bei der Vermittlung von Lerninhalten als auch bei der gelingenden Kommunikation zwischen Lehrpersonen und Schülerinnen und Schülern. Die Kompetenzen, die Schüler/innen am Ende der Primarstufe im Zuhören erreichen sollen, sind in der Verordnung der Bildungsstandards festgelegt und wurden im Rahmen der nationalen Kompetenzmessung Bildungsstandardüberprüfung (BIST-Ü) erhoben. Der Band, der in deutsch-österreichischer Kooperation entstand, zeigt Ergebnisse aus der Pilotierung zur BIST-Ü in Zuhören am Ende der 4. Schulstufe in Österreich. Dafür wird zuerst ein Überblick über die Entstehung der Studie gegeben, bevor das zugrundeliegende Testkonstrukt erklärt wird. Im Band werden sowohl die Test- und Aufgabenentwicklung als auch die Anlage und Durchführung der Pilotierungsstudie aus methodischer und fachdidaktischer Perspektive beleuchtet. Es werden Aspekte des Studiendesigns und der -durchführung berichtet sowie Details der Verlinkung und der Konstruktäquivalenz zu bisherigen Studien dargestellt. Ergebnisse von Schülerinnen und Schülern werden für verschiedene Subgruppen auf Basis der Daten zum neu entwickelten Testkonstrukt aufbereitet.

Abstract Conjugated organic polymers are intrinsic semiconducting materials that exhibit enhanced conductivity upon oxidation or reduction. The unusual nature of this class of organic polymers was brought into particular focus in the late 1970s with the first example of conductivity values in the metallic regime, for which the 2000 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to Hideki Shirakawa, Alan MacDiarmid, and Alan Heeger. As such, it is generally believed that these materials are a relatively recent advancement and originated with this polyacetylene work in the 1970s. This accepted narrative, however, ignores the fact that reports of electrically conductive polymers date back to the early 1960s, with the study of conjugated polymers as a whole dating back to the early 19th century. In fact, the oldest member of this family, polyaniline, predates even polystyrene and is the oldest known fully synthetic organic polymer. Unfortunately, the historical narrative of these polymers is quite muddled in the primary literature, with various inaccuracies and falsehoods commonly propagated. To present a more accurate account as a resource for the field, this book aims to present a comprehensive history of the origin and development of conjugated organic polymers, covering the period from 1834 to the late 1980s. In the process, the history of the first six primary parent polymers (polyaniline, polypyrrole, polyphenylene, poly(phenylene vinylene), polyacetylene, and polythiophene) is presented, as well as the birth of low-bandgap polymers in the mid-1980s.

Completed in 1482, Johannes Lecküchner's <I>Art of Combat with the "Langes Messer"</I> (<I>Messerfechtkunst</I>) is among the most important documents on the combat arts of the Middle Ages. The <I>Messer</I> was a single-edged, one-handed utility sword peculiar to central Europe, but Lecküchner's techniques apply to cut-and-thrust swords in general: not only is this treatise the single most substantial work on the use of one-handed swords to survive from this period, but it is the most detailed explanation of the two-handed sword techniques of the German "Liechtenauer" school dating back to the 1300s. Lecküchner's lavish manuscript consists of over four hundred illustrations with explanatory text, in which the author, a parish priest, rings the changes on bladework, deceits, and grappling,with techniques ranging from life-or-death escapes from an armed assailant to slapstick moves designed to please the crowd in public fencing matches.<BR> This translation, complete with all illustrations from the manuscript, makes the treatise accessible for the first time since the author's untimely death less than a year after its completion left his major work to be lost for generations. An extensive introduction, notes, and glossary analyze and contextualize the work and clarify its technical content.<BR><BR> Jeffrey L. Abstract The desire to animate inanimate objects has been a recurring theme in European culture dating back to Greco-Roman times. This volume aims to establish, for the first time, the significance of this aspiration and its practical realization within Greek and Roman societies. While certain aspects have been explored previously, such as the role of automata in myth or their use in philosophical thought experiments, this study places technological animation as a phenomenon front and centre by examining technological devices across various media and their roles in diverse contexts. The study delves into the reciprocal relationship between technological and material realities, investigating how they influenced the concept of animation and vice versa—a cultural dialogue that has long been neglected. Foregrounding technological animation not only provides a new understanding of the processes behind animation, but also lends a fresh perspective to the discourse of the animated artifact. Whereas ancient animated artifacts are often explained away as a perceptual error induced by rhetoric, magic, theurgy or divine intervention, this study takes technological animation seriously by focussing on a subset of artificial animation produced solely through technical procedures. Together, the papers in the volume explore how various motive forces, such as water and air, pulleys, and other instruments, actively contributed to giving objects agency and impacting their viewers. Further, it examines how the material conditions of the artifacts themselves played a role in the process of technological animation, whether through the distinctive materiality of bronze or the design of a statuette’s hinge.

Abstract This book is the first to trace the fascinating story of how laws and ethical codes have co-evolved with the nation’s military science pursuits, dating back to the founding of the United States. It details scores of examples where untoward conduct has been rationalized as necessary to promote national security and achieve military goals. This includes hazardous research on unsuspecting individuals, military field tests across the country with atomic, biological, and chemical weapons, and the creation of biomedical enhancements that are poised to become essential elements of military missions. Due to secrecy mandates, governmental immunities, and lackluster healthcare, many individuals injured by these actions have been left without legal remedies or adequate means to address their injuries. The book shows how the drive for scientific and military superiority has shifted the moral compass of government and society. Without passing retrospective judgment, it details the moral calculus of decision makers at key moments in military science. This analysis reveals that officials were keenly aware of ethical dilemmas but nonetheless chose to engage in risky—and sometimes unlawful—activities to advance pressing national security goals. Coupled with this historical reflection, the book recommends policies that harmonize contemporary national security concerns with fundamental principles of justice, fairness, and human dignity. It introduces the concept of jus in praeparatione bellum—justice in war preparations—a doctrine of restraint and responsibility that aims to elucidate just and unjust means of preparing for war. The book applies jus in praeparatione bellum to contemporary military science pursuits, and proposes new laws and policies to guide military science projects.
