ABSTRACT Throughout the bulk of the Reformed Tradition’s history within both Europe and the United States, most scholars have dismissed pastor and theologian Moïse Amyraut as a seventeenth century French heretic whose actions and theology led to the demise of the Huguenots in France. However, upon further introspection into Amyraut’s claims as being closer to Calvin (soteriologically) than his Genevan successors, one finds uncanny parallels in the scriptural commentaries and biblical insight into the expiation of Christ between Calvin and Amyraut. By comparing key scriptural passages concerning the atonement, this article demonstrates that Reformed theologian Moïse Amyraut in fact propagated a universal atonement theory which parallels Calvin’s, both men ascribing to biblical faithfulness, a (humanistic) theological method, and similar hermeneutic. As such, both Calvin and Amyraut scripturally contend that God desires and provided the means for the salvation of the whole world. Further, the article demonstrates that Calvin’s successor, Theodore de Beza, could not in fact make the same claims as Amyraut, this article demonstrating that Beza went beyond Calvin’s scriptural approach to Christ’s expiation. Therefore, this article supports a more centrist approach from within and outside the Reformed tradition by demonstrating that Calvin and Amyraut concentrically held to God’s gracious provision in Christ for the saving of the whole world, for those who would believe in Christ for salvation.

Analysiert werden die Leitmotive, die in diesen so genannten »Frühschriften « enthalten sind und die später in den drei bekannten »Hauptschriften« Moltmanns (1964-1975) entfaltet werden. Typische Denkfiguren wie eine perspektivisch bestimmte Begrifflichkeit finden sich schon in der Dissertation über Moyse Amyraut. In der Habilitation über Christoph Pezel zeigt sich bereits das Interesse, systematisch-theologisches Denken mit kirchenreformerischen Ansätzen zu verbinden. Die Untersuchung »Die Gemeinde im Horizont der Herrschaft Christi« bestimmt wesentliche Grundbegriffe, die später in der »Theologie der Hoffnung« entfaltet werden, und in den Schriften »Die ›Rose im Kreuz der Gegenwart‹ « und »Prädestination und Perseveranz« wird die auch in Moltmanns späteren ekklesiologischen Texten nicht aufgelöste Spannung zwischen einem theologischen und einem soziologischen Institutionenbegriff beschrieben.

Les Psaumes sont constamment utilisés par les huguenots dans les prières collectives et privées, mais aussi dans ce que l’on peut appeler des usages militants : à l’occasion de batailles, de proclamations publiques de la foi, des persécutions religieuses et des martyres. Dès les débuts de la Réforme, les psaumes ont été abondamment commentés et étudiés. L’identification de ces interprétations forment le cœur de notre enquête qui cherche à examiner dans quelle mesure cette exégèse a eu une influence sur les usages militants des fidèles. On tente de répondre à cette question à partir de l’analyse d’œuvres qui, rédigées ou traduites en français (commentaires de Jean Calvin et de Martin Bucer, oraisons d’Augustin Marlorat, paraphrase latine de Moïse Amyraut) ont pu bénéficier d’une certaine diffusion et trouver un écho parmi les réformés.

Given that Calvin served as an important source and authority for Amyraut during the controversies on universal grace which broke out ca. 1634, one might expect the same to be true for the polemics on (im)mediate grace surrounding the teachings of another (later) Saumur universalist, Claude Pajon. As this article demonstrates, however, the manuscript works written by, to, and about Pajon reveal that he did not shelter behind Calvin’s name—even if he believed that the latter had shared his view. The extant sources instead show that John Cameron and Paul Testard, two earlier promoters of la grâce universelle, were Pajon’s main sources of inspiration and served as his authorities. The article closes with a twofold conclusion, namely, that the marginal place of Calvin in the Pajon controversies may well be attributed to the greater acceptance la grâce universelle had gained by that time; and secondly, that one does well to recognize the existence of different currents within la grâce universelle of seventeenth-century French Protestantism.

AbstractThis article takes a genetic approach examining Moltmann’s early post-Reformation studies in Moyse Amyraut, Petrus Ramus, Jacob Brocard and Johann Coccejus as the secrets to the tacit tradition of his theology of hope. I contend that the gold he struck in these studies is a historical impulse and legitimization of his own turn to the horizon of the empirical and the historical. However, with respect to the dross, Moltmann critically notes that with the post-Reformation covenant theologians the word of God got entangled in a ‘system’ of hope because of their symbolic-prophetic approach to Scripture. In place of their symbolic-prophetic exegesis he substitutes a promise-exegesis as a way of pointing to God’s relationship to this world and to the human beings in it. He thus replaces the theme of a restless history, and a restless soul, with the restless promise of which God is the author, the originator and the fulfiller. In this way Moltmann found a way beyond post-reformation covenant theology and Barth’s dialectical theology, culminating in his Theology of Hope.

Content: Patterns of development in nudibranch mollusks from the northeast Pacific Ocean, with regional comparisons. -- Lecithotrophic development in Doto amyra (Nudibranchia: dendronotacea), with a review of development in the genus. -- Unusually large polar bodies in an aeolid nudibranch, a novel mechanism for producing extra-embryonic yolk reserves. xiv, 237 leaves : ill. ; 29 cm.<br>Biogeographic patterns of developmental mode in marine invertebrates have been examined with respect to latitude, depth, and general habitat type. Regional comparisons, which might reveal the influence of specific ecological mechanisms on mode of development, are few. The present study was undertaken to: 1) characterize early development, especially its mode, in nudibranch molluscs from the cold temperate waters of the northeast Pacific Ocean: 2) compare the development of these species to that of nudibranchs from other geographic regions: and 3) attempt to explain the observed patterns on the basis of regional differences in hydrography, geology, and primary production. Observations of egg size, embryonic development and hatching larvae were made for 30 species and were supplemented with data from the literature. All data for other regions were obtained from the literature. Developmental mode was determined for 69 NE Pacific species, over half the known fauna. sixty-seven (97%) have planktotrophic development and two (Doto amyra and the introduced Tenellia adspersa) produce short-term lecithotrophic larvae. No evidence for nurse-eggs was obtained in this study, and only the egg capsules of the aeolid Cuthona lagunae were found to contain extra-zygotic yolk reserves. These took the novel form of unusually large, yolk-filled polar bodies that were ingested by the embryonic veligers. Planktotrophic species with egg-shaped, inflated larval shells develop from larger eggs than those of species with typical spiral shells. The former, however, have shorter embryonic periods, owing, in part, to their smaller egg masses; many also hatch with eyespots. World-wide I conclude that planktotrophy, at least among nudibranchs, is most common in regions with relatively slow currents, high standing stocks of phytoplankton, and large expanses of habitat suitable for the adults. This is documented by evidence from the NE Pacific, NE u.s., Britain, NW Red Sea, and NW Mediterranean. Nonfeeding modes of development tend to predominate in areas with fast boundary currents, oligotrophic waters, rapid changes in physical aspects of the adult environment, or in areas formerly in contact with polar waters (e.g., SE U.S., Marshall Is., New South Wales). Latitude and its correlates do not sufficiently account for the observed regional differences in mode of development.
