Abstract:
In today’s business environment characterized by intense competition from globalization and incessantly changing customer needs, market orientation (MO) has been presented as a valuable approach for firms to safeguard themselves against market fluctuations and maintain continuous superior performance. Even though existing literature suggest that MO is a vital driver of business performance, some studies have failed to find its benefits. This is possibly because the MO-performance relationship is has been argued to be context specific and contingent to the business environment. This study thus had as objective to investigate the impact of MO on SME performance, as well as the moderating effects of the external environment on the MO- performance nexus. Using data from South Africa, this study showed that two of the three dimensions of MO (i.e. customer orientation, competitor focus) are significant drivers of business performance and that the MO-performance nexus is moderated by the external environmental factors. Specifically the MO-performance relationship is positively moderated by market turbulence and negative moderated by technological turbulence and competitive intensity. The study culminates with theoretical and practical implications that can be valuable for scholars and businesses operating in South Africa

Abstract:
The study examines contemporary theories of the business environment and family entrepreneurship and shows what external effects the business environment has and what impact it can have on family businesses. Theories outlining the main external factors of the business environment and the different aspects of family businesses are highlighted. The business environment theories of Professors Campbell D. J. & Craig T. provide, in our opinion, the most comprehensive insight into the analysis of the external factors of the business environment, while Professors T. Zellwegers, K. E. Gersick and St. R. Covey highlight the various dimensions of the family business and its operational organisation. Our task in this article is to examine these two areas and how they interact and influence each other. The viability of family businesses requires stability and security and is determined by the environment in which the business operates. The external factors of the business environment are mostly those that the company cannot influence and that lead to uncertainty and instability. Early identification of undesirable conditions can help family businesses to respond more quickly. The European Commission's definition of a family business is at odds with that of academics. With this study, we invite you to update the discussion on the modern legal definition of a family business, which is the basis for policy planning documents, ensuring legal protection, assumption or inheritance of liabilities, etc. The results of the study could be significant for researchers dealing with business and economic regularity, as well as for entrepreneurs and professionals whose field of activity is related to business or public administration.

Abstract:
Previous studies are inconsistent in their findings about the relationship between external involvement and performance. The authors attribute this inconsistency to the misfit between external involvement and business environment. Drawing the concept of fit between information processing capabilities and needs from information processing theory, they develop the fitting patterns between external involvement and business environment and examine their impacts on performance. Information processing capabilities are measured by the degree of two types of external involvement in the NPD process and information processing needs are assessed based on three dimensions of business environment. Cluster analysis was used to develop the taxonomies of fit between external involvement and business environment. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to examine the impacts of fitting patterns between external involvement and business environment on performance. The results reveal six fitting patterns between external involvement and business environment. ANOVA results show that the fitting patterns between external involvement and business environment are related to both operational performance and business performance, supporting our fit theory.

Abstract:
Every business grows, develops and dies within its life-cycle, dependent on its relations with the external and internal environment. Its “flexibility” and ability to “influence” both the internal and external environment are indications of its “health”. A healthy business is characterized by those parameters of its structure and behaviour that encourage its further development in any given environment. The “health” of the business is determined by the level of its homeostasis with the internal and external environment. This kind of health may reach various levels. It is therefore necessary to diagnose it, and to suggest changes in its business strategy and individual parameters. The health of a business should therefore represent a prerequisite of effective behaviour.

Abstract:
Abstract The future of work of both external and internal auditors is exciting and promising, as well as, in the same time, threatening and extremely demanding. The exciting and promising part is connected with lots of possibilities for auditors’ professional career developments and specialization, while the threatening and demanding part is directed towards the ongoing demand and need for continuous education and upgrading their knowledge base and skill sets in order to be able to stay up to date with all developments and changes in their and their clients’ internal and external surroundings. Today these surroundings are characterized by big data and usage of information and communication technologies (ICTs), among which the blockchain technology (BCT) is described as the most pervasive and promising one. This paper is primarily driven by the scarcity of literature and conducted scientific researches regarding the specialized educations and expertise that auditors need to attend and possess in order to be able to exist in the blockchain-based business environment. Therefore, the main research objective of this paper was to determine critical external and internal auditors’ expertise that they need to possess in order to be relevant and successful in the blockchain-based business environment. In order to achieve this main objective, desk research and survey research were conducted. Survey research was conducted on a sample of external and internal auditors in Croatia. In general, results of the empirical research showed that both external and internal auditors in Croatia think that they need to possess high level of expertise in advanced analytical procedures (APs) in order to be able to audit blockchain-based business operations. Consequently, this then instantaneously increases auditors’ demand for specialized education in fields of BCT, APs, and data analytics (DAs) in general.

This paper presents and analyzes the factors in the external business environment that determine the need for redesign processes in enterprises or at the business level. At the same time, the influence of the most relevant factors in the external environment will be analyzed in this context based on a case study conducted at the level of the Jiu Valley enterprises. At the same time, the influence of the most relevant factors in the external environment will be analyzed in this context based on a case study conducted at the level of the Jiu Valley enterprises. The research methodology is the questionnaire. The study is broader, but only a part of the research findings, those related to the factors in the external business environment that determine the need for chance or redesign processes in enterprises, are presented this paper. The overall conclusion of the study is that: the need to undertake processes of change or redesign of business is determined in particular by certain factors such as those in the near environment (customers, competition, etc., with intensities close to influence), but also by the changes in the business environment in which the company operates. The results of the study can generally be argued that the company / business and business it is doing is in close connectivity and interdependence with its external environment.

Abstract:
Entrepreneurship is an essential driving force for the social and economic development of any city. Well-arranged external environment is a fundamental prerequisite in order to motivate local entrepreneurs and to attract investors for establishing new businesses and development of the existing ones. An important role in the development of the external business environment is played by the political position of the local government and the process regulations at the city. The paper aims to carry out the assessment of the external business environment factors and their impact in Rezekne City. The external business environment analysis was performed using PESTEL analysis method; the document “Analysis of the Current Situation” elaborated for Rezekne City in 2014 was used as the base for the current research. The external business environment was evaluated based on six factors: political factors, economic conditions, sociocultural forces, technological factors, environmental factors, and legal/regulatory conditions. Results of the research indicate that the development priorities are defined in Rezekne; the appropriate measures are being performed to achieve the objectives. Overall, it enables entrepreneurs to plan their activities.

Abstract:
The business environment is a multi-factor framework for economic activity, divided into the internal and external environment. Internal environmental factors can be influenced, managed and controlled by entrepreneurs, while external environmental factors cannot. External environmental factors are determined and regulated by the highest authorities – the national government. The government shapes the external environment of business. The main external factors of the business environment most often identified by researchers are: political, economic, legal and technological. The financial factor is classified as an internal factor of the business environment. Experience shows that the financial factor in the case of Latvia cannot be seen in the context of the internal factors of the business environment as defined by the world's leading scientific sources. Given the international nature of financial decision-making and the inability of entrepreneurs to influence it, the financial factor of the Latvian business environment should be viewed in the context of the external factors of the business environment. Latvian family entrepreneurship should be seen in the context of small and medium-sized enterprises. The aim of the study is to analyse the impact of the financial factor, which includes financial policy and financial system planning at the national level, on the Latvian family business environment. The results of the study show that the national financial policies developed in Latvia since the 1990s have posed a threat to the Latvian business environment. The newly established tax structure, based on labour and consumption taxes, has not been able to ensure the generation of internal sources of finance at national level to foster the development of the business environment. Despite the fact that family entrepreneurship was initially envisaged in policy planning documents, it is not even mentioned in financial policy and planning documents, and hence has not been stimulated or supported by taxation.

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of the internal and external business environment on the formulation of business strategy, the impact of business strategy on business performance, and the impact of the internal and external business environment on the performance of the Service and Creative Industry Cluster MSMEs in DKI Jakarta. This study employs a quantitative approach to research, collecting data through observation and interviews and processing primary data derived from respondents' questionnaire responses. Using SEM-PLS 3 Version, the validity test, the reliability test, outer loading, the inner model fit (R-Square), the significance test (hypothesis test), and the F-Square Test are then utilized to assess the study data. F-square of 0.409 > f-square of 0.35, the External Environment has a moderate influence on Business Strategy. The moderate influence of the Internal Environment on the Outcome of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises, as indicated by the F-Square value of 0.29, is accompanied by a modest effect. The finding from this research indicates that the service and creative industry cluster MSME actors in DKI Jakarta formulate business strategies to become Prospector, Analysts, Low-Cost Defender, and Different Defender based on or have different external environmental backgrounds in terms of demography, politics/law, economic conditions, and the technology used to run their respective businesses.

Abstract:
This paper illustrates that small business managers in Hong Kong and the United Kingdom over-rely on the financially related performance measures in a manner inappropriate for handling the complexities and uncertainties in the business environment. It also shows that managers must address the development of new approaches to performance measurement to anticipate market trends and respond to changing customer needs. The paper suggests that small business success is dependent upon the ability of managers to understand the external environment and match this to the internal capabilities of the business. This implies that managers will have an external focus and possess the ability to continuously develop the small business's capabilities to meet the challenges created by the external environment. The paper concludes by advocating that performance measures should adapt as businesses are affected over time by different factors. We recommend a broad approach to performance measurement which incorporates tangible, non-tangible, financial and non-financial indicators.

Abstract:
The usual strategic analysis perceives the external business environment fragmentarily and without a coherent and unifying way. The three levels that a typical analysis of the external business environment involves are a) the macroenvironment and PEST analysis, b) mesoenvironment and “Porter’s diamond”, and c) industrial environment and “Porter’s five forces”. Contrary to the fragmentary analysis of the three levels, this article aims to counter-propose a restructured method of a unified and evolutionary analysis of the external business environment. After presenting the usual analytical handling of the external business environment in the three levels, we suggest that these are rather co-evolving than separate and autonomous spheres of analysis. Therefore, after introducing some elements of the evolutionary socioeconomic theory, we propose a systemic web that perceives the external environment of the socioeconomic organisations in dynamically unified and evolutionary terms. The systemic web conceptualises the approach of the external socioeconomic environment as an open and interactive system comprising three co-evolving spheres in the context of global dynamics: the institutional character of each spatially structured socioeconomic formation; the firm’s functions within the system; and the public-state intervention that contributes to the establishment and reproduction of the system. This conceptual redirection of the methodology of the external business environment can be useful for building an integrated strategic analysis that studies all “micro-meso-macro” components of the entire socioeconomic system.

Abstract:
This paper x-rayed the impact of macro-environmental factors on business performance in Nigeria. The narrative appraisal adopted in this paper showed that macro factors exert influence on and shape. growth and development of businesses in developing economies such as Nigeria. The macro-environment bears more relevance to strategic management, and businesses adjust to the external environment. It further revealed that the government now plays more of a regulatory role in the business environment in some sectors of the economy, and that, though certain measures had been put in place at various levels to engender a conducive business environment for private sector participation, macro (external) factors such as high interest and inflation rates, terrorism, culture, religion, volatile exchange rates, susceptibility of the economy to external shocks, etc., escalated cost of doing business and, thus, posed serious threats to firms performance. Therefore, the paper concluded that macro environments have a significant impact on the success of business activities, and hence such environmental factors must be considered seriously during the process of creating a strategic business plan. Considering these factors will improve the success of the business marketing campaign and the reputation of the brand in the long term. Consequently, reconsideration of such environmental factors that impose unnecessary constraints on businesses was recommended.

Abstract:
This study examines whether a firm’s business strategy affects their information environment. Organizational theory suggests that firms following an innovative “prospector” strategy have greater incentives to provide more frequent voluntary disclosures than firms following an efficient “defender” strategy. Furthermore, prospectors are more likely to attract greater coverage by external information intermediaries. We find that prospectors engage in more frequent management earnings guidance, issue more press releases, and are followed by more financial analysts compared with defenders. Next, we examine the association between business strategy and information asymmetry. We find that despite prospectors having attributes associated with information asymmetry (e.g., R&D, growth options), prospectors have lower information asymmetry than defenders. We attribute this finding to prospectors’ greater access to both internal and external sources of disclosure compared with defender firms, which we confirm using mediation analysis. Collectively, our results suggest that business strategy does affect firms’ information environments, incremental to known determinants, and that strategy serves as a useful context for understanding a firm’s underlying information environment.

Abstract:
The role of entrepreneurial orientation in firms has been a major area of interest to many scholars in the past. Entrepreneurially oriented firms are innovative, calculated risk-takers, and proactively reach markets ahead of their competitors. This paper examines the role of business development services, internal and external business environments on the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and firm’s performance. The article is a theoretical discourse and uses literature from secondary sources in the analysis. The paper finds that past studies conceptualized entrepreneurial orientation as a three factor single-dimensional model and a five factor multidimensional model. Studies using the three factor model have reported different results to those adopting the five factor approach. This has led to inconsistencies in the empirical results of entrepreneurial orientation on firm’s performance. This article also finds that business development services play a mediating role in the entrepreneurial orientation and performance relationship, and that external environment moderates this relationship. However, the paper finds no role of internal environment in the EO-firm’s performance relationship. The paper concludes that the link between entrepreneurial orientation and performance is still a worthy area for further study since contradictions still exist in empirical studies. This study recommends that future studies can use a contingency framework to focus on how other factors are likely to affect this relationship.

Financial technology or fintech, has developed rapidly and made matters easier for storing, borrowing or investing online or with mobile devices. The competition can be seen through peer -to-peer (P2P) lender accounts, which have increased from year to year. Finansindo is engaged in micro-business as a P2P that targets women entrepreneurs who cannot access conventional banks or are not bankable. such as banks and microfinance institutions (MFIs). The External and internal environment will be analyzed to understand current business conditions. Analysis of the external environment contains PEST, industry forces and competitor analysis. Internal environment includes 7P marketing mix analysis and STP analysis. SWOT Analysis and Ansoff Matrix are used to obtain three strategic choices, namely: market development, product development, and market development, together with product development. Based on the analysis, the chosen strategy is market development. Product development is less attractive due to regulations limiting P2P. Market development and joint product development are not attractive due to regulation and limited resources. In conclusion, Finansindo recommends focusing on market development, which offers the same target but in other geographical areas. Adjusting to the previous segment and with relatively high ceiling considerations, Finansindo is recommended to operate in Aceh, North Sumatra, and Riau.

Abstract:
Business-to-business (B2B) corruption, also known as private corruption, refers to unethical or illicit activities between private parties, without the direct participation of the state. Existing literature on the topic, while still limited, has taken several avenues, from qualitative studies to perception-based surveys and research experiments. Upon reviewing key studies and their findings, this article concentrates on research questions related to: business people’s perceptions on the determinants that favor B2B corruption in Romania, consequences of the phenomenon, and potential solutions. Findings are based on primary data collected through a 2019 questionnaire administered to 120 business leaders in Romania. Results confirm earlier studies’ findings that general context, malfunction of the institutions, and mentality favor B2B corruption, and that there is a lack of consensus among the business community on how to recognize and deal with various forms of B2B corruption, despite the widely spread belief that B2B corruption negatively affects business activities. Also, both internal and external solutions are considered to work against B2B corruption. The current article also opens new avenues in the literature, showing that: the probability to face B2B corruption increases with business leaders’ professional experience; preferences on how to deal with corruption cases vary based on a firm’s capital structure (domestic vs. foreign), reflecting the importance of organizational culture; and business leaders overwhelmingly want to fight against B2B corruption through both internal and external measures. Substantial progress, however, will require a proper common understanding by the private sector of what constitutes B2B corruption, including its causes, consequences, and remedies.

The article examines the role of the business environment in shaping the economic security of business entities. The key economic interests of the entity and factors of influence that originate from the internal and external environment and which have a significant impact on the commercial business are distinguished. Potential and real threats to the realization of economic interests and the achievement of goals of the business entities are foreseen. Appropriate measures of an effective system of their protection within the competence of economic security have been developed. The author's vision of defining the economic security of business entities is proposed, which is interpreted as a state of protection of economic interests against the destructive effects of the business environment that maintains resistance to internal and external threats, ensures high competitiveness and ability to sustainable development. It is proposed to distinguish certain areas of economic security, which differ in their purpose and have an individual focus, namely financial, personnel, technical and market. It is proved that the formation of components is, first of all, related to the internal environment, since its factors are solely within the competence of the economic entity and is a primary sign of its effective functioning, which will allow sustainably resisting the effects of the external environment. Internal and external threats of economic activity by separate functional components are distinguished. It is taken into account that economic security management provides for their comprehensive systematic monitoring in order to prevent and minimize destructive effects in a timely. Preventive measures have been developed to improve the level of business security, which will allow to successfully operate in the conditions of competition and to ensure the sustainable development of business entities in the future.

Abstract:
Purpose – This paper uses a number of current examples from a variety of industries both regional and global, to explore the relationship between business longevity, environment, and adaptiveness to argue that only adaptive responses contingent on a proper classification of external circumstance will result in productive efficacy for the business. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – There is compelling evidence that businesses have limited life spans. Management and economic theories of creative destruction, argue that this is salutary for markets and economies. Yet as a counterpoint there are significant benefits to business longevity. Such longevity, however, is predicated on the business's dimensionalised understanding of its task and contextual environment and its deployment of an adaptive response contingent on such understanding. Findings – It is mandatory in prevailing times that adaptive responses ensure that the overall business has external fit and alignment with its environment and internal congruence and consistency between organisational subsystems and their internal subenvironments. Originality/value – The calculus of limited and unpredictable business life spans is justified by theories of creative destruction and hypercompetition. Yet there are intrinsic and extrinsic advantages to business longevity. A causative flow is proffered that predicates business longevity on its ability to; first, classify its prevailing environment, and thereafter deploy contingent adaptive responses for productive efficacy.

Abstract:
The article examines the impact of scientific and technological progress and changes in politics and economics on management in organisation. The effectiveness of contemporary governance systems can be assessed using well-known criteria: average gain; a cautious observer (Wald’s criterion); Laplace criterion; maximax et al. The use of the VUCA-world philosophy has predetermined the search for a solution to the problem of developing new requirements for the knowledge and skills of managers and specialists in the organisation, the availability and formation of competences. In line with the aim of the work – to find new approaches and requirements for management decision-making and organisation management – new requirements for assessing the changing environment, the business response to these changes, and new aspects of managerial and personnel behaviour in organisations have been identified. It has been revealed that in business training it is necessary to pay more attention to the formation of the desire for self-improvement and the development of the ability to overcome difficult situations, to divide goals into subgoals, tasks into stages. The methods of analysis and synthesis, induction and deduction have been used. Applying the results of the study in practice will improve the management of contemporary organisations.

Design/methodology/approach The research adopts a theory-building approach through developing propositions inductively from the empirical case study on four purposefully sampled modern service station facilities. The focus is on analyzing how a facility and its inherent co-located actors represent an entity that forms a business network with external actors in the facility’s environment. Findings The findings propose that when co-located with a large number of actors, the facility and its actors represent an entity that is connected to a wide business network of multiple external actors. On the other hand, when co-located with a small number of actors, the facility becomes a part of the overall supply in the surrounding business environment with a differentiated offering for competitive advantage. Practical implications The research suggests that an appropriate co-locating strategy, for example, when planning the tenant mix of the facility, can contribute to creating a vivid business network in the external environment, which raises the facility to a role of a central entity in such a network. Originality/value The findings explaining how co-location affects the businesses within the facility and within a wider networked environment are novel to the scholarly knowledge on co-location. The research bridges the theories of co-location and business networks that have been treated as separate discourses in previous research.

Abstract:
Learning outcomes Through this case, the students will be able: to study how developments in the external environment impact businesses, in general, and banking sector, in particular, banks/banking, environmental management, financing/borrowing, government, political business risk and politics; to identify the politico-legal constituents of the external environment which significantly influence businesses; and to analyse the pros and cons of loan-waivers as a policy decision on various stakeholders including banks, borrowers, governments as well as the larger society. Case overview/synopsis The case is symptomatic of the dilemmas faced by the Indian bank employees, in charge of loan-disbursals, torn between seemingly contradictory demands from their top management and the governments. Complexity academic level The case is meant to be used in the course on “Business Environment” both at the UG and PG levels. It can be used along with the module on “External Environment and its Constituents” to augment students’ understanding of the “Impact of Political Environment on Business.” The case can also enrich the class discussion on the PEST (politico-legal/economic/socio-cultural/technological) framework for analysing the forces in the external environment acting upon a business. Supplementary materials Teaching notes are available for educators only. Subject code CSS 4: Environmental Management.
