Uranga, Emilio. Essay on an Ontology of the Mexican (1951). Translated by Carlos Alberto Sánchez. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190601294.003.0013.

Full text
Abstract:
Emilio Uranga challenges the underlying assumptions of Samuel Ramos’s popular and controversial thesis regarding the “Mexican inferiority complex.” Uranga’s basic claim, influenced by Heidegger, is that Ramos’s analysis overlooks a more foundational “difference”: that between ontological sufficiency and insufficiency. Ramos’s analysis remains always at an ontic, or philosophically superficial, level of explanation, attributing “inferiority” to the Mexican character without explaining that on which it is grounded. The clue to its grounding lies in fragility, unwillingness, and melancholy, seemingly essential characteristics that define Mexican existence. Thus, fragility is not related to a simple feeling of inferiority, which is itself related to actual intersubjective relationships between Mexicans and their European colonizers, but rather to a more complex emotive life predicated on an unconscious awareness of a primordial relationship to nothingness and non-being. Unwillingness, likewise, is not a simple lack of will, but a refusal to be part of the world.

Abstract:
This chapter puts pragmatist egalitarianism to work, and shows how it reconciles many of the disputes that philosophical egalitarians are engaged in. It also considers inequality in the real world and provides an analysis of racial inequality in the United States. Racial inequality involves a complex imbroglio of (a) institutions like banks, the criminal justice system, media of various kinds, public schools, the healthcare system, zoning laws, electoral politics, public transportation, etc., (b) private individual feelings and biases about black work ethic, loan worthiness, personal responsibility, attitude, ambition, etc., (c) nebulous cultural meanings about black inferiority, violence, criminality, lesser intelligence, and, crucially, (d) the subtle ways in which (a), (b), and (c) mutually reinforce each other. The argument in this chapter is that all three variables are irreducible, triangulated, and mutually constituting and supporting.

Abstract:
Chapter 8 provides a new perspective on familiar debates about deteriorating relations between Russia and the West, which have all too often overlooked the crucial internal development in Russia that this study has identified. The Russian bourgeoisie have largely endorsed Putin’s nostalgic conservatism and patriotism, especially since the Russian annexation of the Crimea. However, other, more long-term factors are also at play. Wealthy Russians in the 1990s had an inferiority complex in relation to the West after decades of Cold War isolation. Their subsequent exposure to Western life has not led to closer political ties but, paradoxically, to feelings of disillusionment with the West and, in an echo of nineteenth-century Slavophile views, a growing sense of the Russian elite’s own superiority. This final chapter discusses the settlement of rich Russians in London; the city favored by émigrés; Russia’s difficult relationship with the West; and why many elite Russians think their culture is morally superior.

Abstract:
This chapter shows that the creed in Galatians 3:26–28 was designed to counter an ancient cliché: I thank God that I was not born a foreigner, a slave, or a woman. This is a fairly complete accounting of the ways by which human beings divide themselves into us and them. There are Greek- and Roman-era versions of this cliché, as well as Jewish versions. It also shows how ancients thought about foreigners, how they treated slaves, and their various theories about the inferiority of women—that is, how they thought about race, class, and gender. Slaves, women, and foreigners were all essentially the same to ancient men—contemptible. They were all other.
