Abstract:

AbstractThe Lydian and Phrygian confession inscriptions dating mostly to the 2nd and 3rd centuries C.E. have provoked less discussion than one would expect. This paper focuses on what was probably the main reason for the pressure to confess sins publicly. A major cause for public confession seems to have been the perceived necessity to reinforce the control of the local god over his or her devotees. The impetus may have been the spreading of the Christian faith in Lydia and Phrygia. It is suggested that the local religious functionaries may have responded by heightening the people's awe concer

What was Lydia Prout’s “dreadfullest thought”? This microhistory, which examines one of the earliest devotional journals penned by a woman in British North America, uncovers surprising connections between the “unruly passion” of a devoted mother who suffered repeated bereavements during the 1710s and the Satanic fantasies of Salem witchcraft confessors in 1692. An annotated edition of Prout’s journal is reproduced in the essay’s appendix.

Mary E. Wilkins Freeman's ‘Luella Miller’ is the most critically acclaimed and puzzling story in her 1903 The Wind in the Rose-Bush and Other Stories of the Supernatural. As described by the tale's storyteller, Lydia Anderson, Luella Miller is a parasitic creature who drains those closest to her of their life force, leading many scholars to label Luella ‘vampire’ despite the many ways Lydia Anderson's storytelling runs counter to literary vampire conventions. Even so, Freeman's haunting tale of death and community paranoia strikingly mirrors the claustrophobic small-town New England that Freem
