Nesta dissertação a Aviação Naval da Marinha Portuguesa é vista a partir dos Anais do Clube Militar Naval. Para que se possa estudar e compreender os factos apresentados torna-se necessário, antes de mais, ter uma ideia clara da temática, o que só é possível através de um forte enquadramento. Numa primeira fase foram analisadas algumas das principais obras relacionadas com o tema, assim como aquelas que, de alguma forma, ajudam a compreender algumas das questões mais debatidas. Foram então selecionados alguns dos principais marcos da História da Aviação, da Aviação Militar Portuguesa e da Aviação Naval Portuguesa e explicados os mais famosos e mais discutidos. Encontra-se assim apresentada a Aviação Naval fora dos Anais do Clube Militar Naval, mas para completar este enquadramento torna-se necessário conhecer a Aviação Naval fora da Marinha Portuguesa. Este tema, porém, pode ser analisado a partir do periódico em estudo. Na análise dos Anais do Clube Militar Naval foram encontrados os principais temas, períodos, autores e motivações de escrita, o que permitiu estabelecer uma relação entre o que foi escrito e os acontecimentos mais marcantes e concluir a forma como na publicação foi abordada a Aviação Naval, até o seu último homem regressar à "casa mãe". Os Anais do Clube Militar Naval tiveram um papel muito importante no registo histórico de alguns dos mais importantes feitos da Aviação Naval, sublinha-se alguns porque muitos dos importantes feitos foram ignorados até ao inicio da sua extinção, ao longo desta dissertação tal será evidenciado.<br>In this dissertation the naval aviation in Portuguese Navy is seen from the Anais do Clube Militar. In order to study and understand the facts presented, it is necessary, first of all, to have a clear idea of the subject matter, which is only possible through a strong framework. In a first phase we analyzed some of the main works related to the theme, as well as those that, in some way, help to understand some of the most debated issues. Some of the main milestones of Aviation History, Portuguese Military Aviation and Portuguese Naval Aviation were selected and the most famous and most discussed were explained. This is how Naval Aviation is presented outside the Anais do Clube Militar Naval, but to complete this framework it becomes necessary to know the Naval Aviation outside the Portuguese Navy. This theme, however, can be analyzed from that time's newspapers. In the analysis of the Anais do Clube Militar Naval were found the main themes, periods, authors and motivations of writing, which allowed to establish a relation between what was written and the most important events and to conclude the way in the publication was approached Naval Aviation, until his last man returns to the "mother house". The Anais do Clube Militar Naval played a very important role as a historical register of some of the most important achievements of Naval Aviation, it is underlined "some" because many of the important feats were ignored until the beginning of its extinction, throughout this dissertation this will be evidenced.

O Clube Militar Naval foi fundado em 1866, num século repleto de mudanças, fruto do ajuntamento espontâneo dos oficiais de marinha como forma de manifestarem a sua discordância contra a proposta de alteração do regime de promoções e do estado em que a marinha se encontrava. O primeiro objetivo havia sido alcançado, através da não alteração da forma como eram realizadas as promoções, no entanto o estado em que a marinha se encontrava motivou os seus sócios a continuarem com o debate em torno dos assuntos navais. Os Anais do Clube Militar Naval são criados em dezembro de 1870, no entanto só a partir de 1871 é que estes começam a ser publicados ininterruptamente até ao período atual. Os Anais são a forma de expressão através da qual são abordados os temas, os pensamentos e ideias dos sócios do Clube. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar uma resumida história do Clube através da análise que certos acontecimentos históricos tiveram nas páginas dos seus Anais, ao mesmo tempo que se tenta aferir da existência de influência entre o regime em vigor e o Clube. Como forma de facilitar esta avaliação o presente trabalho está dividido em quatro capítulos. O primeiro capítulo aborda a fundação do Clube e a contextualização do século XIX. O segundo capítulo é referente ao período temporal do regime monárquico, de 1866 a 1910, e será abordado o Ultimato inglês, a subscrição nacional e a Liga Naval Portuguesa. O terceiro capítulo aborda o período temporal da Primeira República e será abordado a Grande Guerra, a modernização naval ocorrida e a travessia aérea do Atlântico Sul. A Ditadura Militar que vigorou entre 1926 e 1933 fica enquadrada no quarto capítulo juntamente com o Estado Novo, onde se aborda a Segunda Guerra Mundial, a interação com a NATO e a Guerra Colonial terminando com o 25 de abril de 1974. Com o objetivo de assegurar o devido distanciamento histórico e também por ser o fim do regime ditatorial, o fim do período abordado por esta dissertação é o 25 de abril de1974.<br>The Clube Militar Naval was funded in 1866, in a century full of changes, as a consequence of the spontaneous grouping of the Navy officers as a way to show there disagreement against the government proposal for changing the military promotion system laws and the real state the navy was. The first goal has been achieved, by the fact of the government didn’t change the law, however the real naval state gave incentive to endure the discussion around the naval affairs. The Anais do Clube Militar Naval was created in December 1870, despite this it only start working uninterruptedly after 1871. The Clube use the Anais as his magazine in order to express the themes, thoughts and ideas from there associates. This paper aims to present a brief history of the Clube through the analysis that certain historical events had on the pages of his Anais, while trying to ascertain the existence of influence between the existing regime and the Clube. In order to facilitate this evaluation, the present work is divided into four chapters. The first chapter discusses the foundation of the Clube and the contextualization of the nineteenth century. The second chapter refers to the period of the Monarchy, 1866-1910, and will address the English Ultimatum, national subscription and the Liga Naval Portuguesa. The third chapter covers the time period of the First Republic and will be addressed the Great War, the naval modernization and the first air across of the South Atlantic. A Ditadura Militar that ruled between 1926 and 1933, is framed in the fourth chapter along with the Estado Novo, where approaching the Second World War, the interaction with NATO and the Colonial War ending with the April 25, 1974. With the purpose of securing due historical distance and also for being the end of the dictatorship regime, the period covered by this dissertation is the April 25, 1974.

O presente estudo visa relacionar o conteúdo científico e técnico presente nos artigos dos Anais do Clube Militar Naval no período compreendido entre 1871 e 1879 com a evolução histórica da Marinha nesse mesmo período. Com um total de 114 artigos técnicos e 17 artigos científicos retirados dos Anais do Clube Militar Naval no período referido anteriormente, irá assim ser feita a sua análise e posteriormente a sua relação com a evolução histórica da Marinha. O estudo foi realizado com o intuito de avaliar qual a influência que os Anais do Clube Militar Naval podem ter tido nas decisões sobre o desenvolvimento e modernização da Marinha, ou, em outros casos, se a sua publicação foi feita com o intuito de trazer notícias de outros países, assim como algumas críticas ao atraso na modernização Este estudo foi desenvolvido com a relação entre os artigos dos Anais do Clube Militar Naval e a evolução histórica da Marinha portuguesa, tendo em conta os seus autores, muitos oficiais de Marinha, analisaram-se os artigos e relacionou-se com as mudanças que realmente foram realizadas, tanto a nível de modernização como da mentalidade política em aceitar as inovações e novidades que surgiam. Os resultados obtidos através de uma análise crítica entre os artigos recolhidos e a história da Marinha revelaram que todos os artigos eram atuais, assim como a sua escrita, na maioria dos casos, tinha o intuito de revelar inovações e aperfeiçoamentos que estavam a ser feitos noutras Marinhas. O presente estudo torna-se importante devido ao facto de nunca ter sido realizado, assim o desafio tornou-se maior devido ao facto de não existir algo a ter como base. Ainda assim os resultados, tendo em conta o objetivo da investigação, foram bastante positivos, pois conseguiu-se comprovar que os artigos publicados nos Anais do Clube Militar Naval mantinham-se bastante atuais e influenciaram algumas mudanças na Marinha portuguesa.<br>This study aims to relate the scientific and technical articles in this issue of Anais do Clube Militar Naval in the period between 1871 and 1879 with the historical evolution of the Navy during the same period. With a total of 114 technical articles and 17 scientific papers taken from the Anais do Clube Militar Naval in the period mentioned above, will thus be made later analysis and its relation to the historical evolution of the Navy. The study was conducted in order to assess what influence the Anais do Clube Militar Naval may have had in decisions about the development and modernization of the Navy, or, in other cases, if the publication was made with the intention of bringing news other countries, as well as some criticism of the delay in modernization This study was conducted with the relationship between the articles of the Anais do Clube Militar Naval and historical evolution of the Portuguese Navy, in view of their authors, many naval officers, reviewed the articles and linked up with the changes that were actually performed at both modernization and the political mindset to accept innovations and new developments that arose. The results obtained through a critical analysis among the items collected and the history of the Navy revealed that all items were present, as well as your writing, in most cases, it was intended to reveal innovations and improvements that were being made in other Marine. This study is important because we have never been done, so the challenge became greater due to the fact that there is something to base. Yet the results, taking into account the purpose of the research, were very positive because we were able to prove that the articles published in the Anais do Clube Militar Naval kept up fairly current and influenced some changes in the Portuguese Navy.

Alfredo Botelho de Sousa (1880-1960), Oficial de Marinha, foi uma das mais notáveis figuras da Armada no século XX destacando-se como um militar exímio, erudito professor, ilustre escritor e historiador. Na sua carreira militar, entre 1898 e 1946, o Vice-almirante Botelho de Sousa desempenhou as mais variadas comissões e funções de diferentes responsabilidades, de onde se destaca a passagem pelo cargo de Major-General da Armada afirmando-se como um Oficial de qualidade excepcional, sendo demonstrável através dos louvores e condecorações que lhe foram atribuídos. Da sua obra, destacam-se os trabalhos de História Militar assim como os trabalhos relacionados com a Marinha e Defesa Nacional, ambos de grande valor. Com uma produção literária bastante rica e diversificada, Botelho de Sousa deixou também umas centenas de artigos espalhados em vários jornais e outras publicações periódicas, das quais apenas serão foco de análise as escritas para os Anais do Clube Militar Naval e Revista Militar. Tanto na sua vida como obra a figura-chave para a interpretação do Almirante Botelho de Sousa é o Almirante Alfred Thayer Mahan que formulou uma série de princípios que seriam a base do pensamento estratégico do séc. XX, lidos com entusiasmo pelo Oficial português. Tem-se então como objetivo principal desta dissertação o estudo detalhado da vida e obra de Alfredo Botelho de Sousa. Em adição a isto, face à importância do pensamento estratégico de Mahan procurar-se-á mostrar as semelhanças e divergências ao pensamento estratégico de Botelho de Sousa.<br>Alfredo Botelho de Sousa (1880-1960), Portuguese Navy Officer, was one of the most remarkable figures in the Portuguese Navy in the 20th Century. He stood out as an outstanding Officer, an erudite Professor, and an illustrious writer and historian. In his military career, between 1898 and 1946, Vice-admiral Botelho de Sousa was part of the most varied commissions and assumed different functions and responsibilities. It is important to highlight his post as “Major-General da Armada” where he proved to be an Officer of exceptional quality and was granted with the highest praises and commendations. From his vast work, his writings on Military History stood out as being of great value, as well as his works related to the Portuguese Navy and National. Along with his vast and rich literary production, Botelho de Sousa also wrote hundreds of other articles that are part of several journals and periodic publications. From these, only the writings for Anais do Clube Militar Naval and Revista Militar will be analysed. As much as in his life and his work, the key-figure to Botelho de Sousa’s ideals and thoughts is the Admiral Alfred Thayer Mahan, who designed a series of principals which would become the base of strategic thinking in the 20th Century. Botelho de Sousa followed this doctrine with enthusiasm. Thus, the main objective of this dissertation is the detailed study of the life and work of Alfredo Botelho de Sousa. Additionally, with regards to Mahan strategic thinking, the similarities and differences to Botelho de Sousa own ideas will be presented.
