Full textSong translation is a subject that has long been overlooked by translation studies. Likewise, the importance of subtitling studies in translatology, has recently grown with the inclusion of audiovisual products within the canon of what should be considered translation and, therefore, studied as such. For this reason, this research seeks to take these two categories as a basis for analyzing a more complex phenomenon: characterization. In this study, we will analyze the process of characterization in the film Les Misérables by Tom Hooper. As part of our methodology, we propose to analyze the changes that exist in the characterization between the source text (Les Misérables by Tom Hooper) and the target text (the Spanish subtitles of this film) using a multimodal approach. This analysis will be conducted based on conceptual categories such as characterization, song translation, and, above all, multimodality—a category that has been increasingly used in translation studies. In order to undertake this research, we intend first to examine the modes present in the source text and the target text. Secondly, we seek to explore how these modes construct the characterization in the source text. Thirdly, we intend to study the interaction of the modes in the target text. Finally, we aim to evaluate the changes in the characterization of the source and target text, and how these relate to the culture and society of the languages spoken in the source and target cultures.

Arza, Valdés Adriana. "Measurement of acute psychological stress." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/458131.
Full textThe incidents of anxiety, depression, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, pathological stress, as well as other different stress related diseases have significantly increased in recent years and it is most probably due to dramatic changes in the daily lifestyle of citizens. The social and medical problems associated to stress are clearly on the rise and seriously affecting mental health and wellbeing not only in adults but also in young adults and children, according to the WHO (World Health Organization). There is currently an increased awareness of stress, specifically with regards to its medical, social and economic importance; and also, because there are several stress-related comorbidities that remain largely understudied. Therefore, stress has become one of the significant focal points of research interest. Despite the efforts made, a scientifically supported, repeatable and usable in daily life measurement method of stress is still not available. An objective and reliable measurement of stress level could be used to compare the level of stress’ severity in different individuals or between different sets of professionals. It would also be a crucial tool for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of several diseases. Stress can be defined as the disturbance of the homeostatic balance when facing a specific threat to the body (a stressor) that provokes a stress response. The stress response is the body’s attempt to deal with the stressor triggering the different reactions that can be broadly summarised as changes in the autonomous nervous system, a hormonal response (adrenal pituitary adrenal axis) and a behavioural change and/or a decrease in cognitive skills. The methods that have been proposed until now for measuring the different aspects of stress considering its multidimensional quality, can be gathered in three groups: psychometric tests, biochemical markers, and physiological markers. Although biochemical samples and psychometric questionnaires are commonly used stress markers, they do not allow continuous or even regular stress assessment. Therefore, the hypothesis of this PhD thesis is that the stress response level due to a psychological stressor can be determined from a set of physiological parameters, which can be noninvasively and continuously measured. Consequently, the methodology and analysis of results presented are focused on objectively quantifying the physiological component of the stress response level, which can be understood as how close or far an individual is from his/her state of homeostatic balance. To this end, an experimental study was developed to quantify acute psychological stress in healthy young people using biomarkers from physiological signals, which can be continuously and noninvasively measured. An acute stress response was induced to 40 volunteers by applying a modification of the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST), a widely used and documented protocol for lab-induced stress. Standard psychological tests and biochemical stress markers were used as references for stress levels. A multivariable approach to stress measurement is proposed, which includes as stress biomarkers features derived from finger and face temperature, heart rate variability and pulse photoplethysmogram. The results obtained show that, under the given conditions, stress can be assessed and measured quantitatively and continuously from noninvasive biomarkers, as continuous stress measurement was performed every 1 minute. Based on this approach, a stress monitoring method could emerge in the near future. Finally, based on the findings from the experimental study and literature review presented in this thesis, a set of guidelines for the development of a stress measurement system were suggested to delineate the specifications for a stress monitoring system in daily life conditions. Also, some key considerations and challenges of this emerging area of study are addressed.
Rodríguez, Cepeda Juan Pablo. "Modelatge multimodal de transicions i asimetries en línies three-line-microstrip." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Ramon Llull, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/9142.
A three-line-microstrip transmission line consists of three parallel coupled strips printed on a grounded dielectric substrate. The propagation in this line can be described in terms of three fundamental modes, namely the ee, oo and oe modes. These modes are orthogonal and propagate independently unless a transition or asymmetry is present in the line. Any transition or asymmetry will generate an energy exchange or modal interaction among all the propagating modes.
In this work, the modal interaction of a set of transitions and asymmetries in three-line-microstrip transmission lines is analyzed. The study is carried out by using the multimodal analysis. By means of this technique a set of multimodal circuit models (one for each transition) is derived. These models provide a simple and a quantitative interpretation of the modal interaction.
The proposed multimodal analysis is experimentally validated. The obtained results show that the derived multimodal models accurately predict the behavior of the transitions. Due to this fact, they can be used for the analysis of circuits and structures composed of three-coupled-strip sections. In this work, the models have been applied to both the EMC and microwave fields. In the former, they have been employed to study the cross-talk and signal-integrity problems in PCB configurations involving tree-coupled-trace sections. The performed analysis has shown that transitions and asymmetries in these circuits must be considered as a source of interference and signal degradation since the modal interaction can be interpreted as an interference process that involves all the present signals. In the latter, a multimodal analysis of spurline filters has been performed. This study has allowed the derivation of two new filter structures whose main feature is their compactness, which, in contrast to other analogous filters, is achieved by allowing the presence of an additional mode in the resonance process. The use of the multimodal models for the analysis of these structures has permitted both a simple interpretation of the filter operation and the derivation of a set of design rules which allows a rapid fine tuning of some filter parameters such as the center frequency and the bandwidth.

Bachelor's thesis, Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (UPC), 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10757/656978.
Full textAnne of Green Gables is a series of books that narrates the story of Anne Shirley, a girl adopted erroneously by two siblings, her adventures in the Canadian town of Avonlea, her new friendships, and her personal growth. This novel has been adapted for audiovisual media in different countries and at different times. It also depicts the sex-gender system in a 19th century Canadian setting and female characters who challenge this system. Therefore, this research focuses on how the role of 19th century women is represented in three audiovisual adaptations: Anne of Green Gables (1934), Anne of Green Gables (1985) y Anne with an E (2017), taking as source text the first three books of the saga: Anne of Green Gables (1908), Anne of Avonlea (1909), Anne of the Island (1915). These adaptations will be understood as multimodal translation approach since they are cultural products which experience intersemiotic transposition from one sign system to another (Hutcheon & O’Flynn, 2013). This research will be undertaken by means of content analysis and multimodal contrastive analysis of the objects of study. Furthermore, it will be employed the model of adaptation shifts proposed by Perdikaki.

Full textThis research participates of several research lines as Didactics of experimental science, Physics teaching, Discourse analysis, and Multimodality. The general objective of this Thesis is to characterize the explanation story construction` Physics lecturers by analyzing their performance in the classroom, in order to find from the socio-didactic-communicative, rhetorical-argumentative and multimodal frameworks, significative characteristics of these explanations. This is a qualitative research, case-based study. It is analytic, descriptive and interpretive, aiming to capture processes and their development. The study carried out in Venezuela, at Engineering School - University of Carabobo, using the recording of discourses of three professors in their Electromagnetic Physics classes. This thesis heads towards to find theoretical and analytical frames, materials and didactic tools to materialize relevant teacher training plans, focused on their specific pedagogical knowledge. Research design favorize to show a) complexity of teaching performance b) the triangulation of dimensions' analysis used, c) the graphic-descriptive techniques of the lecturer performance from different perspectives and granularities, and more, d) characteristic elements of explanation stories, inferred from its specific educational context, useful for the design of specific teacher training activities for the improvement of teaching practices. The design criteria and research methodology ease, as a result, the production of a greater knowledge of what happens in the classroom, the identification of characteristic elements of explanation stories, how speech is generated in diverse situations, differences and similarities among them, relevant aspects that promote discussion of teachings in their context. Furthermore, it offers new resources and didactic tools that together are potential generators to materialize activities in similar contexts. Multimodal discourse analysis in the classroom contributes with ideas, resources and didactical tools for activity design toward improvement of lecturer´s teaching competencies. Among other: a) a visually stimulating format for this thesis, which can be read easily by a science teacher, and serve as reference material for other researches, b) the explanatory stories or didactical units, c) the categories tables from all of three dimensions: didactic-social-communicative, rhetorical-argumentative and multimodal, the function of which is to order the reflective process towards descriptive writing d) the “Modal Panel”, visual support to characterize the explanatory story from the communicative modes, e) diagrams presented from the theatrical performance point of view, using scenarios and staging to describe didactic-rhetorical-argumentative-multimodal elements of story that have not been used in similar university-level-researches, f) the “Explanatory Story Trajectory Graph”, which represents the generation / resolution of cognitive and communicative tensions over time, g) the “Modal Bar Graph” that describes the communicative modes interaction. To reach these results a new dimension T was added that contemplates the graphic representation of classroom dynamics during the explanatory story development. In fact, new contributions are presented for research in scientific teaching at higher education and university level, taking into account that there is little research in this area. Didactic tools and techniques were developed for the application of discursive analysis focused on the lecturer, which combined are potential generators of elements that can be applied for the preparation of educational improvement activities of the physics lecturer for engineering or similar contexts. Furthermore, for the engineering community where the research was carried out, the teaching work of physics lecturers and the relevance of the work they do in the classrooms, and their dedication to their students, are highlighted.
