Abstract:
The design of high-speed and high-resolution data converters is very difficult due to complexity of architectures used for converting analog signals into their digital representation. Since the introduction of the simplest conversion technique called parallel or flash technique numerous other architectures have been developed, for example n-stage pipeline, reference feed-forward architecture, folding and interpolating technique. The variety of A/D converter architectures additionally complicates design process due to fact that there is no available behavioral simulator, which can be utilized t

Abstract:
The design and development of computer models to simulate analog devices and their effects on circuit applications has been investigated at length. The focus of this research is the development of theoretical and computer models for discrete devices using the popular simulator PRECISE, PRogram for Evaluating Circuits in an Interactive Simulation Environment [3], using a new method for model construction. This new method develops a model approximating the mathematics of the simulation via perturbations and iterations [19]. The models developed by the new method in each case yield a minimum si

The current trend towards miniaturization of modern consumer electronic devices significantly affects their design. The demand for efficient all-in-one appliances leads to smaller, yet more complex and powerful nanoelectronic devices. The increasing complexity in the design of such nanoscale Analog/Mixed-Signal Systems-on-Chip (AMS-SoCs) presents difficult challenges to designers. One promising design method used to mitigate the burden of this design effort is the use of metamodeling (surrogate) modeling techniques. Their use significantly reduces the time for computer simulation and design sp

Abstract:
Granular materials are composed of solid, discrete particles and exhibit mechanical properties that range from fluid to solid behavior. Some of the complexity exhibited by granular systems arises due to the long-range order that develops due to particle-particle contact. Inter-particle forces in granular materials often form a distributive network of filamentary force-accommodating chains (i.e. force chains), such that a fraction of the total number of particles accommodates the majority of the forces in the system. The force chain network inherent to a system composed of granular materials co

This work is a first step towards a long-term goal of understanding computations occurring in the brain and using those principles to make more efficient machines. The traditional computing paradigm calls for using digital supercomputers to simulate large scale brain-like neural networks resulting in large power consumption which limits scalability or model detail. For example, IBM's digital simulation of a cat brain with simplistic neurons and synapses consumes power equivalent to that of a thousand houses! In this thesis, I have studied CMOS dendrites, implemented them on a reconfigurable analog platform and modeled them using MATLAB Simulink. The dendrite model was further used to build a computational model. I implemented a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) classifier to build a simple YES/NO wordspotter. I also discussed the inter-relation between neural systems, CMOS transistors and HMM networks. The physical principles behind the operation of silicon devices and biological structures are similar. Hence silicon devices can be used to emulate biological structures like dendrites. Dendrites are a bran

In this thesis the ANTICS analogue fault simulation software is described which provides a statistical approach to fault simulation for accurate analogue IC test evaluation. The traditional figure of fault coverage is replaced by the average probability of fault detection. This is later refined by considering the probability of fault occurrence to generate a more realistic, weighted test metric. Two techniques to reduce the fault simulation time are described, both of which show large reductions in simulation time with little loss of accuracy. The Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) method is commonly used to do this by testing the ECU in a virtual representation of its controlled system.
