Abstract:
Cognitive scientists who conduct research on analogical reasoning often claim that precedent in law is an application of reasoning by analogy. In fact, however, law's principle of precedent, as well as the use of precedent in ordinary argument, is quite different. The typical use of analogy in law, including analogies to earlier decisions, involves retrieval of a source analog (or exemplar) from multiple candidates in order to help make the best decision now. But the legal principle of precedent requires that a prior decision be treated as binding even if the current decision maker disagrees with that decision. When the identity between a prior decision and the current question is obvious and inescapable, precedent thus imposes a constraint different from the effect of a typical argument by analogy. The importance of distinguishing analogy from precedent is not so much in showing that a common claim in the psychological literature is mistaken, but that making decisions under the constraints of binding precedent is an important form of decision deserving to be researched in its own right and that it has been ignored because of the erroneous conflation of constraint by precedent with reasoning by analogy.

Abstract:
This thesis seeks to explicate, and develop an appropriate method for the elucidation of, the antecedents to the theology of William Blake in the writings of the seventeenth-century divine, Peter Sterry (1613-1672). While the radical religious scene of the English Revolution has long been recognised as offering important antecedents to Blake's thought, Sterry is a figure who has largely been overlooked. The exception to this is an essay, published in 1929, in which Vivian de Sola Pinto asserted the existence of 'startling affinities' between their ideas. Pinto's study was, however, limited by its failure to consider, firstly, the implications of its findings for our general understanding of the antecedents to Blake's thought in the seventeenth century and, secondly, the insight Sterry's writings may be able to offer into Blake's theological vision. These are the very questions at the heart of this dissertation. By addressing them, it seeks to shed new light on the nature of Blake's theology and its anticipations in earlier English thought. Given the lack of evidence that Blake read Sterry, and the limited effectiveness of the 'genealogical' method when it comes to Blake, it pioneers a bespoke 'analogical' method for the exploration of these issues. It proposes that Sterry is actually closer to the intellectual milieu of Commonwealth radicalism than one might expect and that his writings function effectively as a lens through which it is possible to discern how Blake consistently uses 'dualistic' language and imagery in an ethical and epistemological sense. The first finding suggests that the established view of the radical religious environment in Blake studies needs to be extended; the second challenges the widespread perception that Blake's thought is ultimately dualistic in an ontological sense, thus contributing to the elucidation of a perennial problem for Blake scholarship. Together, they underline Sterry's importance as a neglected theological precursor to the thought of William Blake.

Full text
Abstract:
This work attempts to read a moment of French literary history through the lens of animals, and more specifically anthropomorphic representations of them. From the 19th literature and thought, it will put forward a less restrictive definition of the notion of anthropomorphism by considering the status of animals in the romantic imaginary. Anthropomorphism is traditionally perceived as a naïve and spontaneous perception of the world. This tendency to endow things and beings with emotions, intentions or reactions supposedly inherent to humans is based on an analogical thinking that underlies literary genres as universal as fables or other kinds of apologues, that are also seen as simple, as if anthropomorphism was only this non-realistic, entertaining and even comical, mode of representation, that educates only thanks to a distortion of reality. During the 19th century, a new conception of animals emerges, breaking with the classical era. Natural history and romantic philosophy discover deep similarities between men and animals, that provide anthropomorphism with an epistemological and philosophical basis, but also affective and political ones, since the idea of a continuity between the being is one of the pillars of republican thinking on animal protection and animal rights since the Revolution. Looking at literary, philosophical and scientific texts, but also at the history of animals, at their status and treatments, this work would like to provide an overview of analogical paradigms through which men have conceived their relationships with animals over the first half of the 19th century. This period will therefore appear as an important moment of the reconfiguration of animal symbolism, inventing a type of realistic allegory, combining the concern for animals and a faith in analogical thinking

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Design-by-Analogy (DbA) is a design methodology that draws inspiration from a source domain to a target domain to generate new solutions to problems or designs, which can benefit designers in mitigating design fixation and improving design ideation outcomes. Recently, the increasingly available design databases and rapidly advancing data science and artificial intelligence technologies have presented new opportunities for developing data-driven methods and tools for DbA support. Herein, we survey the prior data-driven DbA studies and categorize and analyze individual study according to the data, methods and applications in four categories including analogy encoding, retrieval, mapping, and evaluation. Based on such structured literature analysis, this paper elucidates the state of the art of data-driven DbA research to date and benchmarks it with the frontier of data science and AI research to identify promising research opportunities and directions for the field.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract In this study, we used the heat and mass analogy model to be able to predict the heat transfer properties of a condenser tube operating in passive mode. The most important advantage of analogy model comparing boundary layer model is simplicity and fast computation, that’s why it can be applied to various engineering problems for many cases. The heat and mass analogy model is based on the heat transfer balance between liquid film and gas mixture area. The main problem for the liquid film region is the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) which is affected negatively in the presence of non-condensable gas. Therefore, our main goal is to increase the HTC and condensation heat transfer rate by updating the analogy code. In the gas-vapor mixture region, heat transfer mainly occurred as latent condensation and sensible heat transfer. In order to maintain this balance between the mixture and liquid film, the interface temperature is iterated. After defining a specified tolerance value of the heat and mass analogy model codes, this iteration process was started to be used at the entrance of a condenser tube. The gas and vapor mixture is considered to be saturated at the liquid/gas interface in the heat and mass transfer analogy model. Via boundary layer study of species concentration and energy balance, the non-condensable gas effect on condensation is added into the equation. For the condensation heat transfer coefficient of turbulent vapor flow associated with laminar condensate, numerical predictions were made and they were satisfactory. The predictions were compared with the experimental data from the literature to be able to test the model. Non-condensable gas mass fraction and vapor-non-condensable mixture temperature were presented in the form of radial and axial profiles.

Abstract:
Background: Infection with SARS-CoV-2 can cause COVID-19, which mainly affects the respiratory system. However, neurological complications are frequent, including the group of acquired immune-mediated demyelinating neuropathies (NDAI), including Miller-Fisher syndrome (SMF), characterized by the triad of ophthalmoparesis, ataxia and areflexia. Infection with C. jejuni is the main precipitant of NDAI, but viruses are also related. Objectives: This report aims to describe a case of SMF with concomitant SARS-CoV-2 infection, seen at a tertiary hospital in Northern Paraná and to compare it with the literature. Design and setting: case report of a patient at the hospital neurology service of the Evangelical Hospital, Londrina, Paraná, Brazil. Methods: Report a case of SMF right after confirmation of COVID-19 seen at a tertiary hospital in Northern Paraná and compare it with the literature. Results: Male, 70 years old, white, evolved with progressive and symmetrical crural paraparesis 17 days after confirmation of COVID-19. Upon admission, he presented ataxia, paraesthesia, and crural myotactic areflexia with no signs of pyramidal release, and a score on the Medical Research Council (MRC) muscle strength scale of 58 points. Analysis of CSF with albumin-cytological dissociation. Treatment was performed with intravenous human immunoglobulin (IVIG) and discharged after six days of hospitalization with partial symptomatic improvement. We compared this case with those described in the published literature. Not found Brazilian case published to date. Conclusion: Rare case report of SMF by SARS-CoV-2. The relationship has consistency, temporality, biological plausibility, coherence and analogy compatible with the current literature. Studies with a higher level of evidence are needed to determine the strength of such an association.

Abstract:
Context: Guillain-Barré syndrome is a polyradiculoneuropathy of heterogeneous manifestations, necessarily presenting progressive appendicular weakness of variable intensity associated with reduction or abolition of deep reflexes. One of its variants is known as Miller Fisher Syndrome (MFS), characterized by ophthalmoparesis, ataxy and areflexia. It usually has, by etiology, immunomediated reactions induced by acute infections, including HIV. Objectives: This report aims to describe a case of MFS with concomitants HIV infection, attended in a tertiary hospital in northern Paraná and compared it with the literature. [1,7] Case report: A 27-year-old white male patient who presented binocular diplopia, dysarthria, dysphagia, generalized hypotonia, myasfasciculations, sensory ataxia and arreflexia, with a score on the Medical Research Council (MRC) muscle strength scale of 54 points. Treatment with empirical intravenous human immunoglobulina ( IVIG ) was performed pending the result of serologies for etiological screening. He was discharged after eleven days of hospitalization with partial symptomatic improvement and results indicative of acute HIV infection. We compared this case with those described in the published literature Discussion: We compared this case with those described in the published literature and given the low incidence found in the literature of patients with the stage of HIV viremia and the opening of the picture of SMF, the concrete pathophysiology itself is still unknown. The mechanism, however, in which the literature proposes in two theories: (1) an autoimmune action against myelin due to abnormal immunoregulation by HIV; (2) direct action of neurotropic strains of HIV-1. [2.3] Our literature review shows that since 1995, cases of associated guillain barré syndrome have already been reported in the course of HIV viremia. Treatment with immunoglobulin at a dose of 400mg / kg / day for 5 days was done and the symptoms improved. [1,4,6,7] Conclusion: It is exposed, then, a case of HIV-induced MFS whose relationship has consistency, temporality, biological plausibility, coherence and analogy compatible with current literature.

Abstract:
This work lends insight into the meaning and impact of “near” and “far” analogies. A cognitive engineering design study is presented that examines the effect of the distance of analogical design stimuli on design solution generation, and places those findings in context of results from the literature. The work ultimately sheds new light on the impact of analogies in the design process and the significance of their distance from a design problem. In this work, the design repository from which analogical stimuli are chosen is the U.S. patent database, a natural choice, as it is one of the largest and easily accessed catalogued databases of inventions. The “near” and “far” analogical stimuli for this study were chosen based on a structure of patents, created using a combination of Latent Semantic Analysis and a Bayesian based algorithm for discovering structural form, resulting in clusters of patents connected by their relative similarity. The findings of this engineering design study are contextualized with the findings of recent work in design by analogy, by mapping the analogical stimuli used in the earlier work into similar structures along with the patents used in the current study. Doing so allows the discovery of a relationship between all of the stimuli and their relative distance from the design problem. The results confirm that “near” and “far” are relative terms, and depend on the characteristics of the potential stimuli. Further, although the literature has shown that “far” analogical stimuli are more likely to lead to the generation innovative solutions with novel characteristics, there is such a thing as too far. That is, if the stimuli are too distant, they then can become harmful to the design process. Importantly, as well, the data mapping approach to identify analogies works, and is able to impact the effectiveness of the design process. This work has implications not only in the area of finding inspirational designs to use for design by analogy processes in practice, but also for synthesis, or perhaps even unification, of future studies in the field of design by analogy.

Abstract:
Although the analogy between thermal radiation and collisionless molecular flow has been known since the experiments of Knudsen in the early 20th century, it has not been exploited for mainstream analysis of physical vapor deposition processes. With the availability of commercial finite element and computational fluid dynamics software having built-in cavity radiation solvers with features such as automatic surface definition, meshing and view factor calculation, the analysis of thermal radiation problems has become a straightforward procedure. A direct result of this is the ease with which high vacuum deposition processes can be analyzed via the radiation-molecular flow analogy. There are several advantages of using the analogy as opposed to analytical and Monte-Carlo methods which have been traditionally employed for analyzing PVD processes. These include the ease of handling complex geometries and reduced computing times due to the replacement of the probabilistic calculations in Monte Carlo simulations with a deterministic one. In this paper, we demonstrate the use of a commercial finite element software, ABAQUS, for predicting deposition profiles from planar as well as tube sources and compare them with those presented in thin-film literature. We also compare the prediction of flow rates through long tubes with those calculated analytically by Knudsen. The predictions are in good agreement with the analytical and experimental data thus establishing the validity of the method in analyzing real-life deposition and molecular flow problems. Finally, we employ ABAQUS for predicting the thickness variation in an actual thin-film deposition setup and compare the results with experimental measurements.

Abstract:
<p>The coherent concept of the lever arm is presented. The new graphical interpretation of the lever arm Z regarding shear flow together with mathematical justifications are provided. The conclusion is, that the lever arm Z is a crucial parameter which connects shear flow and transverse force and it links diagrams of the normal stress and the shear flow for a cross-section and such a representation is not known at literature. There is an analogy between the lever arm regarding the shear flow and the effective width regarding shear-lag effect for normal stress. The background of historical analysis of the issue is presented.</p>

Abstract:
Abstract The drive to mitigat water production continues to increase the interest in applying conformance-control gel treatments in mature oil fields. Practically, designs of new gel treatments are adopted from previous case histories conducted in analogous reservoirs. This design-by-analogy procedure requires reservoir engineers to have a thorough knowledge about how gel treatments should be designed and have been mostly applied for each reservoir type. This paper presents comprehensive design guidelines for sizes of injection-well gel treatments based on an integrated survey of worldwide field projects. It also provides the typical and most-applied treatment volumes per reservoir type to be used as a starting point in planning of new jobs. The survey includes 61 gel projects compiled from SPE papers and conducted in 11 different countries between 1985 and 2014. Summaries and distributions of five gel-volume parameters were evaluated using the univariate descriptive analysis and stacked histograms. Scatterplots were used to determine effects of the formation temperature and the treatment timing on treatment volumes. The unsuccessful pilots were compared with productive gel projects to indicate the causes of pilots’ failure. The survey showed that the typical treatment size is 10,700 barrels, 310 barrel per perforated foot, or 19% of the moveable-pore-volume (MPV) of problem zones. Overall, gel volumes are greatly affected by the formation type and larger treatment volumes are placed in sandstones than carbonates and in matrix-rock than other formation types. Frequently, matrix-rock formations are treated with gel volumes &gt;100 bbl/ft while treatment sizes &lt;100 bbl/ft are used to treat naturally-fractured and unconsolidated formations. Gel volumes &lt;3000 or even &lt;1000 barrels are used to treat pipe-like channels in unconsolidated sandstones, treat matrix-rock formations without crossflow, or in economically-designed gel treatments. We have found that increasing the gel volume improves all treatment performances, not just the oil production response, and for all formation types, not just for the matrix-rock reservoirs. Hence, the ‘bigger is better’ rule of the gel volume is also recommended for fractured and unconsolidated formations as for the matrix-rock reservoirs. Instead of searching the literature for few analogs, the new survey provides conformance specialists with a complete overview of gel treatment sizes for all reservoir types. This would markedly facilitate designing of gel treatments and save time needed to identify the analogs for a given candidate reservoir.

Abstract:
Abstract In order to retrieve analogous designs for design-by-analogy, computational systems require the calculation of similarity between the target design and a repository of source designs. Representing designs as functional abstractions can support designers in practicing design-by-analogy by minimizing fixation on surface-level similarities. In addition, when a design is represented by a functional model using a function-flow format, many measures are available to determine functional similarity. In most current function-based design-by-analogy systems, the functions are represented as vectors and measures like cosine similarity are used to retrieve analogous designs. However, it is hypothesized that changing the similarity measure can significantly change the examples that are retrieved. In this paper, several similarity measures are empirically tested across a set of functional models of energy harvesting products. In addition, the paper explores representing the functional models as networks to find functionally similar designs using graph similarity measures. Surprisingly, the types of designs that are considered similar by vector-based and one of the graph similarity measures are found to vary significantly. Even among a set of functional models that share known similar technology, the different measures find inconsistent degrees of similarity — some measures find the set of models to be very similar and some find them to be very dissimilar. The findings have implications on the choice of similarity metric and its effect on finding analogous designs that, in this case, have similar pairs of functions and flows in their functional models. Since literature has shown that the types of designs presented can impact their effectiveness in aiding the design process, this work intends to spur further consideration of the impact of using different similarity measures when assessing design similarity computationally.

Abstract:

Misoprostol and teratogenicity: Reviewing the evidence. Population Council, 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/rh2003.1003.

Full text
Abstract:
Misoprostol, a prostaglandin E1 analog marketed as Cytotec® for the prevention and treatment of gastric ulcers, is inexpensive and registered for use in over 80 countries. Many scientific articles show the preparation to be safe and effective for various reproductive health indications, including cervical softening and early pregnancy termination. Owing to the extensive body of published literature on these indications, misoprostol is now widely used for several reproductive health indications. The abortifacient properties of misoprostol are well known to medical professionals and frequently to the public. As noted in this meeting report, because the drug is available at low cost, many women have opted for self-administration of the method to terminate their pregnancies. The pharmaceutical industry and the public health community have raised the concern that if such an abortion attempt fails and the pregnancy results in a live birth, exposure of the fetus to misoprostol in utero could increase the risk of birth anomalies. The most extensively documented accounts of self-medication with misoprostol for induced abortion have come from Brazil, thus the case of Brazil provides a unique opportunity for studying the potential teratogenicity of misoprostol.
