Delaplace, Joseph. "Le présent du passé : citations et répétitions dynamiques dans l'oeuvre de Györgi Ligeti." Paris 8, 2005. http://www.theses.fr/2005PA082560.

Abstract:
This search lean on the analysis of repetitive processes – including quotation as a privileged reference to the past – in the works of György Ligeti. The detailled investigation of compositionnal processes result in a reflexion on the contemporary writing who, at the ligetian prism, allow to interpret a larger musical production. The connections between tradition, modernity and postmodernity inform the actual discussion about esthetic. Our interpretations lean on the writings of Adorno, Benjamin and Lacan. In a first time, a strict study of ligetian techniques can show how the repetition exceed a “neutral level” and become an element of historic awareness. Afterwards, the relations with musical tradition are explored more exactly through the exemple of the concerto, one of the favorite form of Ligeti. The quotation is studied with the analysis of Le Grand Macabre, a work in which the connexions between repetitions and quotations ask a question of signification and integration of the past. In the chapter four, Ligeti's style is compared with those of Mahler and Beethoven, before to be questionned about particular affects who can be found in the works of musical theater, and also beeing transformed in the later production of the composer

Nasr, Maria. "La didactique de la traduction - une étude scientométrique." Thesis, Paris 3, 2010. http://www.theses.fr/2010PA030050.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a scientometric study on 542 texts about translation didactics published between 1966 and 2009. The purpose is to investigate what authors have influenced this field and what texts, languages, types of media and disciplines are the most cited. Most cited authors are translation scholars who are not specialized in translation didactics. The functionalist and linguistic approach of translation are the most cited trends among the most cited authors. These authors are mostly cited for their theories and their teaching methods. Citing texts show the influence of European institutions, since most cited authors are affiliated in European countries. French authors are practically only cited by authors affiliated in French-speaking countries and the most influential German-speaking authors are cited by authors from various countries. The majority of most cited texts are monographs on translation studies published in the nineties by teachers and translators. The most cited texts between 1966 and 2005 deal with translation studies research (non-didactic texts) and the most cited texts between 2006 and 2009 are didactic texts on non-literary translation. Papers in collective books and journals are less cited than monographs. Authors also cite more ‘old’ texts than ‘recent’ texts (released more or less than five years after the publication of the citing text). Most cited texts are written in English and texts on translation studies (non-didactic texts) are a lot more cited than texts from other disciplines

Abstract:
The present work comes within the scope of a project carried out by the LaLIC research team (Langage, Logique, Informatique et Cognition). From a computer perspective this work is of an operational value and it aims at defining the requirements in terms of text segmentation and semantic interpretation of typographic marks for filtering information. The final outcome of this work are the SegATex and CitaRE applications. We proceeded in defining the value of punctuation marks and followed with a historical study of punctuation. We took special interest in the origins of the graphical form of the comma and its eventual relation with the waw, a particle in Arabic language. The SegATex application (Automatic Segmentation of Texts), as a computer module, is intended to prepare (to tag) a text for an automatic language processing which includes text segmentation in sections, sub sections, paragraphs, sentences, titles and enumeration. In the third part of the thesis we treat the "automatic extraction of quotations". The outcome of this part is the CitaRE system (Citation : Repérage et Extraction). We have followed the method of contextual exploration in order to comply with the requirements for filtering and extracting knowledge (the quotation)

Abstract:
We propose a platform for semantic annotation, called “EXCOM-2”. Based on the “Contextual Exploration” method, it enables, across a great range of languages, to perform automatic annotations of textual segments by analyzing surface forms in their context. Texts are approached through discursive “points of view”, of which values are organized into a “semantic map”. The annotation is based on a set of linguistic rules, manually constructed by an analyst, and that enables to automatically identify the textual representations underlying the different semantic categories of the map. The system provides through two sorts of user-friendly interfaces (analyst or end-user) a complete pipeline of automatic text processing which consists of segmentation, annotation and other post-processing functionalities. Annotated documents can be used, for instance, for information retrieval systems, classification or automatic summarization. As example, we propose an analysis of the linguistic markers of the enunciative modalities in direct reported speech, in a multilingual framework concerning Arabic and French

Abstract:
This thesis analyses the writing strategies in three works by james joyce : dubliners, a portrait of the artist as a young man and ulysses, and this according to the notions of scenario, model and deviation. In a scenario, writing becomes a variable programming displaying possible deviations from a model. Dubliners offers programmatic narratives whose unfolding seems to conform to a virtual matrix. We examine successively the question of perturbed cyctes ("the sisters"), of perverted mediation ("an encounter"), of the figure of the loop ("eveline"), of emblematic mimodrama ("two gallants"), of programmatic time ("the boarding house"), of copy as subversion ("counterparts"), of writing as a warping process ("clay"), of cliche as scenario ("a painful case") and of the ego as frontier ("the dead"). The portrait shows both a liturgical model based on rites of incarnation and a dialogical model based on a dynamic exchange of words and gestures. In ulysses the gaps widen : conductivity and circulation in "calypso" ; blurring of the bodily functions by the fluidity of music in "sirens" ; montage of vocal repetition and stereotyped reproduction in "cyclops" ; contrast between gerty's trompel'oeil text and the experiments in the bloomian laboratory ; constitution in "circe" of a fantasmic texte gigogne ; subversion of catechistic questioning by scholastic clarificatio in "ithaca". We conclude that in ulysses the bloomian figure of the loop involves a dialectic of deviation

Renaud, Pascale. "Sylvie et Bruno : l'oeuvre oubliée de Lewis Carroll." Rennes 2, 2002. http://www.theses.fr/2002REN20008.

Full text
Abstract:
Sylvie and Bruno has been little received and little liked, as shows a review of the critical reception of the novel since its publication. The hypothesis of an unsteady fantasy based relationship between author and reader fails to account for the incapacity of most Carrollians to read this opus. An analysis of Carrollism is therefore necessary ; it functions as an ideology, based on a mythical image of " Lewis Carroll " towards which every Carrollian needs to position him/herself. The main reproach towards Sylvie and Bruno is that Carroll failed to keep writing Nonsense such as he used in the Alices. Yet, he proclaimed the radical novelty of this work and insisted on the " grave thoughts " which he wished to develop besides lighter passages destined to children. A new reading of the text allows us to put forward the literary, philosophical, religious and social influences which shade new light on Carroll's position in his later years, as well as the literary form he decided upon, which was called by Gilles Deleuze a " serial method " and proves to be very modern. This study intends to show the importance of this opus in Carroll's works, and to reinitiate its critical reading

Abstract:
For biomedical research to improve clinical practice, and for funding levels to be sustained, it is increasingly important to understand the pathways from research to clinical practice and to assess the societal impact of research. Approaches to research evaluation through traditional study of journals, journal articles and standard citation analysis, have played comparatively small roles in these developments. In this thesis I critically review how I applied existing methods, and developed a new approach, to study two pathways from research to clinical practice. For Pathway 1, questionnaire surveys of clinicians' views on journals read to inform their clinical practice, and comparisons with impact factors, revealed that a few journals were read widely and considered important by clinicians. Relationships between journal importance and impact factor were complex. For Pathway 2, I applied a novel methodology to identify important citations to four key research papers in an attempt to trace important citations through numerous citing generations. My findings included: few cited papers were important to the citing papers; the number of citation occasions within the citing paper correlated strongly with a cited paper's importance; self-citations were also important; and it was feasible to trace through a series of generations of citations. Evidence of societal impact of the four key research papers examined in my studies included important papers in subsequent generations cited in clinical guidelines, many of which were international. In assessing the impact of my own studies, I found Pathway 1 papers had societal impact on research evaluation methodology; journal editorial policy; and medical library provision policy and practice. Societal impacts of the new methodology, Pathway 2, included informing further methodological development and research evaluation. My portfolio, together with my critical review, adds understanding and provides additional data to current assessment methods of wider impacts of research, and bases for further studies.

Full text
Abstract:
In today's significant and rapidly increasing amount of scientific publications, exploring recent studies in a given research area and building an effective scientific collaboration has become more challenging than any time before. Scientific production growth has been increasing the difficulties for identifying the most relevant papers to cite or to find an appropriate conference or journal to submit a paper to publish. As a result, authors and publishers rely on different analytical approaches in order to measure the relationship among the citation network. Different parameters have been used such as the impact factor, number of citations, co-citation to assess the impact of the produced research publication. However, using one assessing factor considers only one level of relationship exploration, since it does not reflect the effect of the other factors. In this thesis, we propose an approach to measure the Academic Citation Impact that will help to identify the impact of articles, authors, and venues at their extended nearby citation network. We combine the content similarity with the bibliometric indices to evaluate the citation impact of articles, authors, and venues in their surrounding citation network. Using the article metadata, we calculate the semantic similarity between any two articles in the extended network. Then we use the similarity score and bibliometric indices to evaluate the impact of the articles, authors, and venues among their extended nearby citation network. Furthermore, we propose an academic recommendation model to identify the latent preferences among the citation network of the given article in order to expose the concealed connection between the academic objects (articles, authors, and venues) at the citation network of the given article. To reveal the degree of trust for collaboration between academic objects (articles, authors, and venues), we use the similarity learning to estimate the collaborative confidence score that represents the anticipation of a prospect relationship between the academic objects among a scientific community. We conducted an offline experiment to measure the accuracy of delivering personalized recommendations, based on the user’s selection preferences; real-world datasets were used. Our evaluation results show a potential improvement to the quality of the recommendation when compared to baseline recommendation algorithms that consider co-citation information.

This is a presentation of 21 slides - the corresponding full paper was first published with the Proceedings of the 2006 ASIS&T Annual Meeting (http://www.asis.org/Conferences/AM06/index.html). A pre-print version of that paper is also separately available via dLIST (http;//dlist.sir.arizona.edu/1714). A new citation indexing paradigm is proposed: the cascading citation indexing framework (c2IF, for short). It improves the way research publications are assessed for their impact in promoting science and technology. Given a collection of articles and their citation graph, citations are considered at the (article, author) level. Each one article is uniquely identified by means of the Digital Object Identifier (DOI, http://www.doi.org). To identify each one author uniquely, a Universal Author Identifier (UAI) scheme is established. In addition to the citations directly made to a given (article, author) pair, citation paths that target each one citing article are also considered. The granularity of the paradigm is further increased by introducing the concept of the chord, whereby a citation path of length one co-exists with paths of length two or higher, involving the same source- and target- articles. The c2IF output emerges in the form of a medal standings table, analogous to the one that ranks teams at athletic events: when two (article, author) pairs receive the same number of (direct) citations, the one that is cited by more popular articles (i.e. articles that comprise targets to a larger number of paths in the citation graph), is assigned a higher rank value.

Abstract:
The status of Information Systems (IS) as a discipline has been widely debated as a body of knowledge that offers a number of concepts, methods and techniques to understand and improve the roles of information communication systems and technologies in organizations. Current state of this debate as reported in academic journals signals an imperative to ground some of the perspectives in relation to what IS professionals use in practice in different cultural and geographical contexts. This paper aims to contribute to the debate by tracing the unfolding of information systems as a body of knowledge using the ideas of Abbott on disciplines. We use three different stages of a discipline's development: differentiation, conflict and absorption and map them using a citation and co-citation analyses of two main IS journals (EJIS and MISQ) in the period between 1995 and 2008. Our results indicate that dominant ideas and models to investigate IS phenomena emerged over time are behavioural based and study IS adoption/acceptance/rejection in organisations, many of which are predictive and thus lending themselves usable for positivistic quantitative and qualitative research. There are however stable varieties within IS building on interpretivism and constructivism that we need to recognise and reignite in order to ensure that this field continues moving forward, in particular in studying current and future processes of innovation and diffusion of technology worldwide. Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to contribute to the methodology at the intersection of relational and evaluative bibliometrics. Experimental investigations are presented that address the question of how we can most successfully produce estimates of the subject similarity between documents. The results from these investigations are then explored in the context of citation-based research evaluations in an effort to enhance existing citation normalization methods that are used to enable comparisons of subject-disparate documents with respect to their relative impact or perceived utility. This thesis also suggests and explores an approach for revealing the uncertainty and stability (or lack thereof) coupled with different kinds of citation indicators. This suggestion is motivated by the specific nature of the bibliographic data and the data collection process utilized in citation-based evaluation studies. The results of these investigations suggest that similarity-detection methods that take a global view of the problem of identifying similar documents are more successful in solving the problem than conventional methods that are more local in scope. These results are important for all applications that require subject similarity estimates between documents. Here these insights are specifically adopted in an effort to create a novel citation normalization approach that – compared to current best practice – is more in tune with the idea of controlling for subject matter when thematically different documents are assessed with respect to impact or perceived utility. The normalization approach is flexible with respect to the size of the normalization baseline and enables a fuzzy partition of the scientific literature. It is shown that this approach is more successful than currently applied normalization approaches in reducing the variability in the observed citation distribution that stems from the variability in the articles’ addressed subject matter. In addition, the suggested approach can enhance the interpretability of normalized citation counts. Finally, the proposed method for assessing the stability of citation indicators stresses that small alterations that could be artifacts from the data collection and preparation steps can have a significant influence on the picture that is painted by the citationindicator. Therefore, providing stability intervals around derived indicators prevents unfounded conclusions that otherwise could have unwanted policy implications. Together, the new normalization approach and the method for assessing the stability of citation indicators have the potential to enable fairer bibliometric evaluative exercises and more cautious interpretations of citation indicators.

Abstract:
The present item comprises an amended (post-print) version of: D.A. Dervos and T. Kalkanis, cc-IFF: A Cascading Citations Impact Factor Framework for the Automatic Ranking of Research Publications, Third IEEE International Workshop on Data Acquisition and Advanced Computing Systems: Technology and Applications (IDAACS), Proceedings pp. 668-673, Sofia, Bulgaria, September 5-7, 2005
A new framework is proposed for the calculation of impact factor ratings of research publications. Given a collection of research articles, the corresponding citations graph is constructed in the form of a relational table. The impact value is considered at the article level, and is calculated by considering not only the citations made directly to an article, but also citations made to the corresponding citing article(s). In this respect, an improved algorithm is utilized, namely one that traverses all the threads in the citations graph, in an attempt to improve the degree of fairness in assigning credit for the impact value of each one article. When two articles have an equal number of (direct) citations, the one that has triggered more research activity (i.e. its citing articles attract a larger number of citations at subsequent levels in the citations graph) is assigned a higher impact value and, consequently, is ranked to be better.

Neelameghan festschrift. New Delhi: Ess Ess Publications for Ranganathan Centre for Information Studies, 2006. (pages 89 â 110). Abstract: Objective: The objective of this citation study is to understand the use and influence of the concept of â controlled vocabulariesâ in Geographic Information Science (GIS) as part of a larger goal to distinguish information science from information technology. Methods: Articles with pre-selected descriptors that represented the concept of â controlled vocabulariesâ within GIS were selected from GeoRef and validated in ISI indexes. Bibliographic coupling and content analysis of the article titles were used to draw clusters and understand the influence of the concept of controlled vocabularies in other discipline such as the geosciences. Results and Conclusion: The results from this analysis provide one perspective of the LIS sub-domain of â controlled vocabulariesâ as represented in GeoRef and used in the context of GIS research and scholarship. Findings are used to suggest future research directions to address issues related to better understanding of the concept of â controlled vocabulariesâ and the provision of knowledge organization tools that will promote interdisciplinary understanding. The creation of special, more-finely grained in-depth classifications and thesauri for the concept itself, namely, â controlled vocabularyâ is recommended.

Abstract:
The concept of health literacy finds its origins in the field of education. In its brief history the definition, structure, and direction of the field has changed dramatically and has emerged as a multidisciplinary endeavor full of discipline specific manifestations, most recently, public health literacy. Using bibliometric and citation analyses, this study investigated the field of health literacy from the first use of the term in 1974 to the present year, 2010. A range of databases from the various fields that have contributed to the field were searched using the keyword string, “health literacy.” Data was organized, cleaned and parsed using EndNote X3. A free, Java-based application, CiteSpace, was utilized for visualization of author co-citations, document co-citations, keyword co-occurrences, and document co-citation clusters. This research presents researchers, librarians and those interested in the field with information to efficiently conduct literature searches and understand the structure of the field. In addition, this research provides insight into how and where the field may be progressing in terms of multi- and interdisciplinary research.

Abstract:
The ongoing debate on the evaluative role of citation analysis and the theory of citation recognizes that the citation process is complex and that citation counts are affected by certain extra-scientific or external factors. To date, little effort has been made to explore the effects of various external factors; this thesis addresses this lack. In the context of the various perspectives on citations and citation analysis, this study uses journals as the unit of analysis and investigates what, how, and to what extent extra-scientific factors influence the citation impact of journals. An integrated conceptual model of Journal Citation Impact that takes into account current theoretical positions and prior empirical research findings is developed. It addresses the interrelationships between Journal Citation Impact and a range of external factors (Journal Properties, Journal Visibility, Journal Accessibility, Journal Internationality, Journal Selectivity, Journal Promptness, Journal Editorial Prestige, and Perceived Journal Quality). The proposed conceptual model is novel in that it: (1) incorporates nearly all possible external factors that affect Journal Citation Impact; (2) addresses the complex interrelationships between a number of external factors and Journal Citation Impact in one model; (3) regards both Journal Citation Impact and its external factors as theoretical constructs; and (4) identifies the observed variables of the external factors and Journal Citation Impact. However, because of the difficulties in operationalizing all the theoretical constructs, this conceptual model is simplified to an operational model for empirical testing. The operational model includes the construct Journal Citation Impact and four of its external factors, Journal Properties, Journal Accessibility, Journal Internationality, and Perceived Journal Quality. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with Partial Least Squares (PLS) is used to test the operational model with empirical data from 41 research journals in clinical neurology. Data are collected from bibliographic database searching, web searching, printed journals, and from a web-based survey that was conducted to obtain information on perceptions of journal quality. Empirical results of the operational model show that Journal Accessibility, Journal Internationality, and Perceived Journal Quality have large, medium, and small effects respectively on Journal Citation Impact, thus indicating that certain extra-scientific factors can influence Journal Citation Impact significantly. The findings suggest that great care should be taken in interpreting and evaluating the results obtained from citation analysis. In terms of Journal Citation Impact, this research also suggests that various journal citation indicators should be ii used to reflect different aspects of citation impact. By exploring the phenomenological domain in the citing process, this exploratory study not only provides a better understanding of citation analysis, it also contributes to the development of the theory of citation. From the methodological perspective, introducing SEM with PLS to Informetrics and Scientometrics also contributes to the knowledge base of these fields. Pragmatically, the research findings will enhance the judgment of researchers and practitioners such as editors, publishers, librarians and other information specialists in assessing journal performance. Finally, the worldwide survey findings on peer assessment of journal outlets in clinical neurology will be useful for researchers, academics or clinicians in this field.

Abstract:
Our work of research arises from the desire to articulate a literary writing with a formal analysis. A specificity, whose interest lies in its protean property, has proved to be at the centre of our literary and theoretic concerns: quotation. Postmodern literature paves the way for the study of this specificity since quotations abound in this genre. In our study, we look on their multiple facets in a corpus of eight contemporary French novels. All the quotations reflect the idea of crossbreeding and blending which is typical of the postmodern aestheticism. Thus, our thesis looks through the reported discourse, polyphony, aphorism. . . But first, we have to define postmodern literature, which includes the process of reflecting on the genre. Our main purpose can be detailed as such: we will aim at explaining that the postmodern French literature exists and is characterised by textual and transtextuel properties, in this process, we apprehend a linguistic rethinking of transtextuality

Abstract:
Interest in the area of virtual work continues to increase with articles being written from different disciplinary perspectives - e.g. information systems (IS), management, psychology and transportation. In this paper, we map research on virtual work to (a) understand the intellectual base from which this field has emerged, (b) explore how this field has evolved over time, and (c) identify clusters of research themes that have emerged over time and the relationships between them. Specifically, we use co-citation analysis of research published in all social science disciplines to map the field at three points in time - 1995, 2000 and 2006. Our results show that the field has grown from nine research clusters in 1995 to sixteen in 2006. A comparison across these maps suggests that research in the cluster of "virtual teams" has gained significance even as research within some earlier clusters such as "urban planning and transportation" has lost ground. Our longitudinal analysis identifies relevant concepts, theories and methodologies that have emerged in the field of virtual work. This analysis can help interested researchers identify how they may want to contribute to the field of virtual work - by adding to popular clusters, enriching emerging smaller clusters or by acting as bridges across clusters. Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation was to analyze the content of textbooks used in undergraduate survey courses in interdisciplinary humanities to understand the content of the curriculum and how an author's viewpoint shapes the product. By enumerating the texts and images authors and their publishers used to illustrate 20th century culture and the transition into the 21st century, the analysis generated a description of the range of perspectives from traditional to postmodern found in six sampled textbooks. Textbook content provided chronological data, while authors' source citations established identity properties of the works' contributors. Through a ranking system of authors' treatment of content and citations, the most traditional perspectives were compared to the most postmodern. Classifying cultural contributors by identity properties gave a quantitative rate of inclusion of traditionally excluded groups. A trend of increase in "diversity-infusion" was observed among all authors when the content of the textbooks was compared in chronological sequence. The qualitative differences, as constructed for this dissertation, indicate that each textbook constitutes a varied and unique representation of author perspective. The project's contribution to future research is the development of a database of art works and literary sources from the years 1900-2006 that can be used for quantification and for further study.

Abstract:
The paper investigates how Information Systems (IS) has emerged as the product of interdisciplinary discourses. The research aim in this study is to better understand diversity in IS research, and the extent to which the diversity of discourse expanded and contracted from 1995 to 2011. Methodologically, we apply a combined citations/co-citations analysis based on the eight Association for Information Systems (AIS) basket journals and the 22 subject-field classification framework provided by the Association of Business Schools (ABS). Our findings suggest that IS is in a state of continuous interaction and competition with other disciplines. General Management was reduced from a dominant position as a reference discipline in IS at the expense of a growing variety of other discourses including Business Strategy, Marketing, and Ethics and Governance among others. Over time, IS as a field moved from the periphery to a central position during its discursive formation. This supports the notion of IS as a fluid discipline dynamically embracing a diverse range of adjacent reference disciplines, whilst keeping a degree of continuing interaction with them. Understanding where IS is currently at allows us to better understand and propose fruitful avenues for its development in both academia and practice.

Low, Wan Jing. "Variants of compound models and their application to citation analysis." Thesis, University of Wolverhampton, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2436/620467.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis develops two variant statistical models for count data based upon compound models for contexts when the counts may be viewed as derived from two generations, which may or may not be independent. Unlike standard compound models, the variants model the sum of both generations. We consider cases where both generations are negative binomial or one is Poisson and the other is negative binomial. The first variant, denoted SVA, follows a zero restriction, where a zero in the first generation will automatically be followed by a zero in the second generation. The second variant, denoted SVB, is a convolution model that does not possess this zero restriction. The main properties of the SVA and SVB models are outlined and compared with standard compound models. The results show that the SVA distributions are similar to standard compound distributions for some fixed parameters. Comparisons of SVA, Poisson hurdle, negative binomial hurdle and their zero-inflated counterpart using simulated SVA data indicate that different models can give similar results, as the generating models are not always selected as the best fitting. This thesis focuses on the use of the variant models to model citation counts. We show that the SVA models are more suitable for modelling citation data than other previously used models such as the negative binomial model. Moreover, the application of SVA and SVB models may be used to describe the citation process. This thesis also explores model selection techniques based on log-likelihood methods, Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) and Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC). The suitability of the models is also assessed using two diagrammatic methods, randomised quantile residual plots and Christmas tree plots. The Christmas tree plots clearly illustrate whether the observed data are within fluctuation bounds under the fitted model, but the randomised quantile residual plots utilise the cumulative distribution, and hence are insensitive to individual data values. Both plots show the presence of citation counts that are larger than expected under the fitted model in the data sets.

Russell, Mark C. "Appropriating Wittgenstein: Patterns of Influence and Citation in Realist and Social Constructivist Accounts of Science." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/36573.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, I draw attention to patterns at the intersection of (a) interpretations of science in two journals (Philosophy of Science, and Social Studies of Science) and (b) references to Wittgenstein's writings. Interpretations of science can be classed according to the degree to which they support a realist or social constructivist understanding of the entities described by current scientific theories. By tracing the intellectual traditions from which these interpretations emerged, I develop an abstracted classification of these positions. Since this classification does not meaningfully map onto the positions articulated by the writers sampled here (which is telling about intellectual histories generally), I develop a new, more promising scheme of classification. I find that Wittgenstein is appropriated more often in support of social constructivist views of science, but that reasons for this support are generally weak. Using a novel measure of content which I call "appeal-to-authority," I show that there is a significant difference between these journals in their use of Wittgenstein's writings. But there is a subtle methodological argument at work here as well. I show that methods of analysis which rely exclusively on intellectual histories, bibliometrics, and globablizing statements about the products of science suffer serious limitations. In short, this thesis reflexively shows that the methods upon which it is based allow room for considerable bias and manipulation, and thereby implicates many bodies of work built upon these methods.

Abstract:
Citations allow researchers to define relationships across articles and develop arguments by building on the work of others. This study explores citation of theory symbols in Instructional Design and Technology (IDT) academic articles. The term theory symbol is used to define a concept that, after its original publication, is subsequently incorporated by later writers through citation. Exploring the citation history of the seminal publications makes it possible to trace theory symbol use over time and thus to trace its dissemination in the field. A typology of theory symbol use in IDT academic publication is developed through a citation context analysis (CCA) of a sample of articles published in Educational Technology Research and Development (ETRD) and its predecessor journals (1953–2012) which incorporate theory symbols through citation. This analysis contributes to an understanding of how theory has shaped IDT disciplinary knowledge and augments discourse analysis and bibliometrics by examining the context in which theory is incorporated into academic publication.

Abstract:
Thesis (MSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Citation analysis is an important tool in the academic community. It can aid universities, funding bodies, and individual researchers to evaluate scientific work and direct resources appropriately. With the rapid growth of the scientific enterprise and the increase of online libraries that include citation analysis tools, the need for a systematic evaluation of these tools becomes more important. The research presented in this study deals with scientific research output, i.e., articles and citations, and how they can be used in bibliometrics to measure academic success. More specifically, this research analyses algorithms that rank academic entities such as articles, authors and journals to address the question of how well these algorithms can identify important and high-impact entities. A consistent mathematical formulation is developed on the basis of a categorisation of bibliometric measures such as the h-index, the Impact Factor for journals, and ranking algorithms based on Google’s PageRank. Furthermore, the theoretical properties of each algorithm are laid out. The ranking algorithms and bibliometric methods are computed on the Microsoft Academic Search citation database which contains 40 million papers and over 260 million citations that span across multiple academic disciplines. We evaluate the ranking algorithms by using a large test data set of papers and authors that won renowned prizes at numerous Computer Science conferences. The results show that using citation counts is, in general, the best ranking metric. However, for certain tasks, such as ranking important papers or identifying high-impact authors, algorithms based on PageRank perform better. As a secondary outcome of this research, publication trends across academic disciplines are analysed to show changes in publication behaviour over time and differences in publication patterns between disciplines.

Abstract:
This thesis provides an in-depth study of the possibilities of applying bibliometric methods to the research field of literary studies. The four articles that constitute the backbone of this thesis focus on different aspects of references and citations in literary studies: from the use of references in the text to citation patterns among 34 literature journals. The analysis covers both an Anglo-Saxon context as well as research in Swedish literary studies, and the materials used include Web of Science data, references in the Swedish literature journal TFL (Tidskrift för Litteraturvetenskap) and applications to the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet). A study is also made of the influence of one single publication—Walter Benjamin’s Illuminations—and its impact in literary studies and in wider academia. The results from the four articles are elaborated upon using a theoretical framework that focuses on differences in the social and intellectual organization of research fields. According to these theories literary studies can be described as a fragmented, heterogenic, interdisciplinary and ‘rural’ field with a diverse audience. The fragmented and rural organization of the field is reflected in low citation frequencies as well as in the difficulties in discerning research specialities in co-citation mappings, while the analysis of the intellectual base (highly cited authors) is an example of the heterogenic and interdisciplinary character of the field, as it includes authors from many fields across the humanities and the social sciences. The thesis emphasizes that bibliometric studies of research fields in the humanities need to incorporate non-English and non-journal publications in order to produce valid and fair results. Moreover, bibliometric methods must be modified in accordance with the organization of research in a particular field, and differences in referencing practices and citation patterns ought to be considered. Consequently, it is advised that bibliometric measures for evaluating research in these fields should, if used at all, be applied with great caution.

Abstract:
The notion of an "orthodox core-heterodox periphery" structure and the extent of interdisciplinary links have been widely discussed, and partially investigated bibliometrically, within economic discourse. We extend this research by applying tools from social network analysis to citation data of three economics departments located in Vienna, two mainstream and one non-mainstream, to assess their relative citation patterns. We show that both mainstream economics departments follow the asserted core-periphery pattern and have a mono-disciplinary research focus, while the citation network of the non-mainstream department has a polycentric structure and is both more heterodox and interdisciplinary. These findings suggest that discussions about the future of heterodox economics should pay more attention to the organizational level and seek allies from other disciplines.

Abstract:
This thesis seeks to demonstrate that the new facilities of Web of Science (WoS) online can be used in new ways to enhance understanding of scholarly communication. It investigates four aspects of scholarly communication: characteristics of highly cited articles, citation levels of collaborative articles, citation levels of multi-disciplinary articles, and patterns of annual citation of highly cited articles. For the first two topics it investigates the WoS category of ‘Information Science & Library Science’ (IS&LS), whereas for the other topics it compares diverse WoS categories in science and social science. Although its main data source is WoS, its investigation of disciplinarity also uses Scopus. The thesis finds: (a) Highly cited IS&LS articles tend to be multidisciplinary and cited late, but are not necessarily first-authored by influential IS&LS researchers, (b) Amongst un-cite IS&LS articles the proportion of collaborative articles has remained almost constant over the past three decades whereas for higher cited articles it has grown steadily with time, (C) In social science subjects the level of citation of multi-disciplinary research are generally similar to that of mono-disciplinary research, whereas in science the citations levels for multi-disciplinary research are substantially lower than that of mono-disciplinary research, and (d) In both science and social science many very highly cited articles continue to be heavily cited more than twenty years after publication. This thesis also introduces and uses an indicator for measuring the extent of collaboration called ‘average partner scores’ and indicates a way in which the subject categories of WoS can be investigated without requiring a licence for the WoS database. Finally, it identifies and addresses some of the technical problems of using WoS online to investigate scholarly communication.

Abstract:
Conference proceedings represent a large part of the literature in computer science. Two Conference Proceedings Citation Index databases were merged with Web of Science in 2008, but very few studies have been conducted to evaluate the effect of that merger of databases on citation indicators in computer science in comparison to other databases. This study explores whether or not the addition of the Conference Proceedings Citation Indexes to Web of Science has changed the citation analysis results when compared to Scopus. It compares the citation data of 25 randomly selected computer science faculty in Canadian universities in Web of Science (with Conference Proceedings Citation Indexes) and Scopus. The results show that Scopus retrieved considerably more publications including conference proceedings and journal articles. Scopus also generated higher citation counts and h-index than Web of Science in this field, though relative citation rankings from the two databases were similar. It is suggested that either database could be used if a relative ranking is sought. If the purpose is to find a more complete or higher value of citation counting or h-index, Scopus is preferable. It should be noted that no matter which source is used, citation analysis as a tool for research performance assessment must be constructed and applied with caution because of its technological and methodological limitations

Their data show that the field has become a more successful exporter of ideas as well as less introverted than was previously the case. In the last decade, information studies has begun to contribute significantly to the literatures of such disciplines as computer science and engineering on the one hand and business and management on the other, while also drawing more heavily on those same literatures.

The ISI provides librarians with tools such as the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) and the institution specific Local Journal Utilization Report (LJUR) to aid in the management of serials collections. These tools enable librarians to respond quickly to changes in publishing practices and purchasing options. While available literature often criticizes ISI data, few studies provide concrete recommendations for improvement. This study explores two extensions to LJUR: (1) adding citation date and (2) creating institution specific impact factors. In addition, I explore the degree to which self-citations influence the ISI impact factor. Publication and citation calculations are made for three prominent southern universities’ research chemists using a corpus of full text articles drawn from 27 American Chemical Society (ACS) journals and stored in an Oracle database. The ACS research corpus impact factor simulation and ACS research corpus self-citation omission impact factor are also created and compared with current JCR data.

Abstract:

Abstract:
While many historical articles and chapters on the foundations of Instructional Design and Technology (IDT) have painted an accurate picture of the field, it has been 21 years since anyone has given emphasis to the relationships of influence among IDT scholars. Many have written on various elements of the field, emphasizing events according to their own experience, which have increased our overall understanding of IDT. However, without insight on the connections between these pieces, the field appears to be only a broad array of isolated silos, each filled with its own research interest. This research sought to discover IDT's genealogy of influence. Three main research questions were asked: "Currently, who are the most influential scholars in IDT?" "Who influenced today's most influential scholars?" and "What ideas were most influential in the scholars' relationships?" The ten most influential names in IDT were discovered, and their genealogies of influence were traced. The ideas that were most influential in the relationships between theorists were summarized into the following groups of fields: General Education, IDT (and its contributors), Psychology, Sociology and Anthropology, and Adult and Higher Education. This research found an IDT field that was very diverse but very connected. Another important result was much less expected: the prevalence of psychology as a significant influence on both past work and current big ideas. Implications are discussed, such as revising definitions of the field.

Abstract:
Citation analysis, which provides insights into the influence of particular scholarly work in a field of study, can also show epistemological "turns" through patterns of citations over time. This study explored the impact of postmethod epistemology on the shared knowledge of the English-as-a-second-language (L2) education community over a 26-year period. The approach consisted of tabulating and analyzing citations in 125 articles from two major journals, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Quarterly (TESOL Qrtrly) and English Language Teaching Journal (ELT). The time period covered was 1994, when the term postmethod was introduced in TESOL Qrtrly, through 2019. Attention went to the following questions for each journal and for both journals together: (i) who is the most influential of the three major postmethod authors, B. Kumaravadivelu, Richard Allwright, or Hans Stern? (ii) what was the most cited postmethod publication? and (iii) have there been patterns over time for citations of postmethod authors and publications and for the use of the term postmethod? Of the three postmethod authors, Kumaravadivelu was the most cited in the two journals combined. For TESOL Qrtrly, Kumaravadivelu was the most cited, and Stern was second. For ELT, Kumaravadivelu and Allwright had an equal number of citations, and both surpassed Stern. Of the 23 postmethod publications by these scholars, the most highly cited in both journals was Kumaravadivelu's 1994 article "The Postmethod Condition." It was the most cited in TESOL Quarterly, followed by Stern's 1983 book Fundamental Concepts of Language Teaching. In ELT, Allwright and Bailey's 1991 book, Focus on the Language Classroom, was the most cited followed by Allwright's 2003 article, "Exploratory Practice: Rethinking Practitioner Research," published in Language Teaching Research. Trend analyses for citations in TESOL Quarterly and ELT showed curvilinear patterns with a peak in postmethod citations in the two journals in the mid-2000s. In regard to the term postmethod, patterns suggested that it did not become mainstream in the two journals that were studied. This inquiry, which was focused on two major journals in L2 English education, provided some details about the impact of postmethod epistemology in a period that some scholars have called the "postmethod era." Through citation analysis, the study helps to situate postmethod epistemology historically.

Abstract:
Abstract The research was focused on the international diffusion of a national zoological journal, Annales Zoologici Fennici. The purpose of the study was to apply diffusion of innovations research as a theoretical framework of a diffusion study conducted through the bibliometric methodology. The following research questions were studied: to which countries has Annales Zoologici Fennici diffused, what are the attributes of Annales Zoologici Fennici as an innovation, and what theoretical concepts adopted from diffusion research can be considered as useful in a bibliometric study of the diffusion of a scientific journal. The following concepts were examined: innovation, diffusion, and the relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, and trialability of an innovation. The international diffusion of Annales Zoologici Fennici was studied through citation analysis and an analysis of the national distribution of authors whose articles had been published in the journal, and as the attributes of innovation, the compatibility, complexity and observability of Annales Zoologici Fennici were examined. Both the study of citations and authors showed a growth of international awareness of Annales Zoologici Fennici during the study period, 1974–1996. The most important directions of diffusion were to the boreal areas. The diffusion was most marked in the horizontal direction, but an element of hierarchical diffusion was also noted. The compatibility of the journal as well as a decrease of complexity were found to have an influence on diffusion. Bibliometric methods were able to represent the international diffusion of a scientific journal
Annales Zoologici Fennicin diffuusio on voimakkaimmin suuntautunut boreaalisille alueille. Muutoksiin liittyy Annales Zoologici Fennicin yhteensopivuuden laajeneminen ja monimutkaisuuden väheneminen. Diffuusiotutkimuksesta omaksutut käsitteet ja bibliometriset menetelmät soveltuivat tieteellisen lehden kansainvälistä diffuusiota koskevaan tutkimukseen

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to present a content analysis of seven music therapy journals in the English language in order to provide an objective documentation of the longitudinal growth of the field. The current study examined seven English language music therapy journals including the Journal of Music Therapy, Music Therapy: Journal of the American Association for Music Therapy, Music Therapy Perspectives, The Australian Journal of Music Therapy, The Nordic Journal of Music Therapy, The British Journal of Music Therapy, and The New Zealand Society for Music Therapy Journal. A total of 1,922 articles were coded according to author information (name, credentials, institution, geographic location), mode of inquiry, population studied, and subsequent article citation. Results indicated a broad range of research topics with a rapid rise in music and medicine research beginning in the 1980s. Research authors in music therapy comprise a diverse group of authors both from the United States and abroad. This study highlighted transitions in institutional productivity moving from clinical settings to academic settings. Over the course of 50 years, there have been continuous changes in various aspects of the music therapy literature that document the continuing growth of the profession.

Lotulelei, Sitalaiti. "Identifying Patterns in the Crucial Educational Leadership Constructs Used by the Most Cited Authors and Published Works of 1990-2010." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2012. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3139.

Full text
Abstract:
This study conducted a bibliometric analysis for the purpose of identifying the crucial leadership constructs that best explain and/or define effective educational leadership in two decades (1990-2000 and 2001-2010). The study reviewed top authors in educational leadership and analyzed their top cited works to identify leadership constructs which were (a) unique to leadership works within the 1990-2000 decade, (b) unique to the 2001-2010 decade, and c) similar or different between the two decades. The study found that the leadership constructs did evolve and shift during the study period and addressed the changing demands of individuals, educational organizations, and the external environment. Crucial educational leadership constructs were the product of the efforts of researchers in educational leadership to promote effective school leadership, improve learning outcomes and student performance, and create beneficial organizational results. The findings of the study highlight the potential impact and benefit of the continually upgrading and refreshing the understanding, training, and preparation of current and future school leaders.

Paris 8, 2000. http://www.theses.fr/2000PA081731.

Full text
Abstract:

This study examines whether patent citation impact, a leading indicator of firms’ innovation capabilities, is associated with firm value and whether this association is mediated by analyst recommendations. The results indicate that change of patent citation impact is positively associated with firm valuation, supporting the value relevance of innovation capability. We further find that patent citation has a positive impact on analyst recommendations for the firm. In addition, analyst recommendations at least partially mediate the effects of patent citation on firm value. That is, analyst recommendations represent a mechanism through which patent citation affects market valuation. Overall, this study reveals the impact of patent citation on analyst-based outcomes and price formation and calls attention to the construct of patent citation as a key intangible asset for the investor community.

Arunachalam, Subbiah, and M. Jinandra Doss. "Mapping International Collaboration in Science in Asia through Coauthorship Analysis." 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/106209.

Full text
Abstract:
Using data from SCI 1998, we have analysed international collaboration in science in 11 Asian countries. Papers resulting from collaboration among these countries and with G7, European Union, OECD and selected Latin American and African countries were classified under subject categories to characterize each countryâ s total and collaborated scientific literature output. Japan (16.4% of internationally collaborated papers), India (17.6%) and Taiwan (16.3%) recorded an internationalization index less than 30 whereas China (28.5%), South Korea (24.6%) and Hong Kong (36.2%) recorded an internationalization index greater than 40. India, China and South Korea have collaborated more in physics, whereas the other eight countries have collaborated more in life sciences. In almost all fields and for virtually all Asian countries, USA is the most preferred collaborating partner. All G7 countries collaborate more with China, which is emerging as a leader in regional collaboration, than with India.
