Full textThis thesis joins in the field of operator theory. We are specially interested by the extremal operator S(Φ) defined by the compression of the unilateral shift S to the model subspace H(Φ) where Φ is an inner function on the unit disc. The numerical radius of S(Φ) seems to be important and have many applications to harmonic analysis. C. Badea and G. Cassier showed that there is a relationship between the numerical radius of such operators and the Taylor coefficients of positive rational functions. We give an extension of C. Badea and G. Cassier result and an explicit formula of the numerical radius of S(Φ) in the particular case where Φ is a finite Blaschke product with unique zero. An estimate in the general case is also established. The second part is devoted to the study of the higher rank-k numerical range denoted by Λk(T) which is the set of all complex number λ satisfying PTP = λP for some rank-k orthogonal projection P. This notion was introduced by M.-D. Choi, D. W. Kribs, et K. Zyczkowski motivated by a problem in Physics. We show that if Sn is the n-dimensional shift then its rank-k numerical range is the circular discentered in zero and with a precise radius

Full textThis thesis covers two themes. The first begins by evaluating the width of unit balls in Banach spaces. Bounds for these quantities are found, focusing on the case of l^p balls. Widths are also related to mean dimension, an adaptation of entropy to cases where it would be infinite. However, this dynamical invariant turns out to be inefficient if one wishes to distinguish between the dynamical systems given by the unit ball of l^p(\Gamma; \rr). An alteration of mean dimension is thus introduced to deal with this case, but it is no longer a topological invariant but Hölder covariant. This is still sufficient to obtain obstructions. Another variant which relates to Von Neumann dimension is also introduced, following Gromov, and using an extension of the Orstein-Weiss lemma some (but not all) properties are shown. The second theme deals with pseudo-holomorphic curves. We first modify a result on the gluing of two pseudo-holomorphic curves so as to have a nore precise behaviour of the glued curve. Then pseudo-holomorphic cylinders are constructed from a chain of pseudo-holomorphic curves. Under strong assumptions, we obtain an interpolation result on these cylinders. This interpolation result has many consequences, in particular, that thedifferent cylinders obtained are simple, have different images, and form a family of infinite dimension. This theme is reunited with the first as this family has also positive mean dimension. An appendix contains an adaptation of "Taubes toolbox" (methods of elliptic analysis developed by Taubes in "The existence of anti-self-dual structures") to the 2-dimensional case

Full textThe connection between amenability of a locally compact group $G$ and injectivity of its group von Neumann algebra $\LG$ has been studied by many of the world's leading operator algebraists for decades. In this work we clarify this connection by showing the equivalence between amenability of $G$ and injectivity of $\LG$ as an operator module of the Fourier algebra $A(G)$. In fact, we prove a corresponding result for all locally compact quantum groups $\G$, providing a novel tool for the development of abstract harmonic analysis on locally compact quantum groups. We give several immediate applications, including a proof that closed quantum subgroups of amenable quantum groups are amenable, as well as a simplified proof that co-amenability and amenability of the dual are equivalent for compact quantum groups which avoids the use of modular theory, suggesting a potential avenue for generalization beyond the compact setting. We also introduce a notion of inner amenability for locally compact quantum groups and study its connection to relative injectivity. We obtain several new results which not only answer open questions, but provide new approaches from a homological perspective, including the self duality of biflatness for quantum group convolution algebras

Full textIn the electricity production, one central key to reduce damages and losses due to wetness in steam turbines is the study of liquid films. These thin films are created by the deposition of droplets and are highly sheared. This film may then be atomized into coarse water. At the moment, no comprehensive and validated model exists to describe this phenomenon. A 2D model based on a integral formulation associated with closure laws is developed to represent this film. Compared to classical Shallow-Water equation, the model takes into account additional effect : mass transfer, droplet impact, shearing at the free surface, surface tension, pressure gradient and the rotation. The model properties (hyperbolicity, entropy, conservativity, linear stability, Galilean invariance and rotational invariance) has been analyzed to judge the pertinence of the model. A new 2D code is implemented in a free module of the code EDF Code Saturne and a finite volume method for unstructured mesh has been developed. The verification of the code is then carried out with analytical solutions including a Riemann problem. The model, which degenerates into classical Shallow-Water equations for the case of a falling liquid film on a inclined plane, is validated by the experiment of Liu and Gollub, 1994, PoF and compared to reference models (Ruyer-Quil and Manneville, 2000, EPJ-B et Lavalle, 2014, PhD thesis). Another study depicts a sheared film under low-pressure steam turbine conditions and is validated by the experiment of Hammitt et al., 1981, FiI. Lastly, the code film is coupled to 3D steam data around a fixed blade of a BP100 turbine, from Blondel, 2014, PhD thesis. This industrial application shows the feasibility of liquid film's simulation in real steam turbine condition

Full textIn this thesis, we study the behaviour of electromagnetic waves when interacting with a negative material. Such a material has a negative electric permittivity and/or magnetic permeability. Here we only focus on negative permittivity materials. In dimension two, Maxwell's equations in harmonic regime reduce to a couple of scalar, easier to tackle, sub-problems. One of these sub-problems allows surface waves to propagate along the interface between a negative material and a dielectric, which makes it very interesting for the applications. Such surface waves are called surface plasmons. Here, we focus on this sub-problem and more specifically on its main part which is a conductivity equation. Yet, as the permittivity sign changes between the negative material and the dielectric, it is not allowed to use the classical Lax-Milgram framework. In the first chapter, we introduce tools which are useful to understand the rest of this thesis. In particular, we describe how studying conductivity equation leads us to deal with the Poincar{'e}-Neumann operator. The spectrum of this operator encodes permittivity ratios that allow surface plasmons to propagate. We propose both the integral formulation and the variational formulation of this operator, and we explain the link existing in-between. In the second chapter of this thesis, we focus on the well-posedness property of the conductivity equation when permittivity sign changes. Using integral equation methods, we propose a sufficient well-posedness condition for this problem. In the third chapter, we deal with the numerical computation of the Poincaré-Neumann operator spectrum using finite element methods. We are interested in the convergence of numerically computed eigenvalues to the theoretical ones. In the last chapter, we study the electromagnetic wave transmission problem in a metallic layer with a negative permittivity from the Green's function point of view. In particular, we investigate the Green's function behaviour when the metallic layer thickness goes to zero

This work has the goal to treat the concept of correlation on both classical and quantum, addressing what already exists about the matter and giving a new perspective about it. Beyond this, we propose a new manner to calculate the amount of information of a quantum system. For this, the EPR paradox, Bell theorem, entanglement concept, Shannon and von Neumann entropies, code theory and the quantum correlation measure so-called quantum discord will be discussed. From those subjects, two generalizations will be proposed: of the von Neumann entropy and the quantum correlation concept. Some features e properties will be discussed about these new definitions, however there is still much to be investigated about its implications.

Full textMy thesis deals with the problem of classifying up to isomorphism certain von Neumann algebras. Indeed, I study families of factors of type III arising from two different contexts : ergodic theory and Voiculescu's free probability theory. First, I construct the crossed product of a factor of type II infinity by a virtual subgroup of R, Le. , a measure preserving free ergodic flow. What I obtain is a factor of type III_1. In the case the factor of type II infinity is full, using a result of Popa, I completely classify this construction by proving that it only depends on the flow up to conjugation. After that, I classify certain free products of hyperfinite von Neumann algebras with respect to almost periodic nontracial states. I completely classify some of these free products by showing that they are isomorphic to the almost periodic free Araki-Woods factors of Shlyakhtenko. Thus, they only depend on the group generated by the point spectra of the states

Full textIn this dissertation, I study several rigidity properties of von Neumann algebras. In Chapter 1, we prove the relative solidity of Bernoulli crossed products of arbitrary type. This result is based on Popa's deformation/rigidity and generalizes a theorem of Chifan and Ioana in the tracial case. As a consequence, when the acting group is non-amenable, the crossed product is prime (cannot be decomposed nontrivially as a tensor product of two factors) and the associated equivalence relation is solid. In Chapter 2, we study full factors in relation with the spectral gap property. The main result is a spectral gap characterization of full type III factors which is similar to Connes' characterization in the tracial case. This allows us to better understand the structure of these factors and their automorphism group. We generalize a theorem of Jones by giving a sufficient condition for a crossed product to be full. This condition is necessary when the group is abelian. In particular, we obtain a complete characterization of the type III_1 whose core is full. In a joint work with C. Houdayer and P. Verraedt, we show that a tensor product of two full factors is also full and we compute its Connes invariants. We also prove a unique McDuff decomposition theorem that generalizes a result of Popa in the II_1 case. In Chapter 3, we study McDuff factors, i.e. those factors that can absorb tensorially the hyperfinite factor, as well as their counterpart in ergodic theory, the so-called stable equivalence relations. We obtain a new "spectral gap like" characterization of these properties, based on a maximality argument. With this refined characterization, we are able to prove the following rigidity result: a direct product of two stable equivalence relations is stable if and only if one of them is already stable. The analoguous problem on McDuff factors remains open, but we do give some partial results

Full textThe purpose of this dissertation is to put on light rigidity properties of several constructions of von Neumann algebras. These constructions relate group theory and ergodic theory to operator algebras. In Chapter II, we study von Neumann algebras associated with measure-Preserving actions of discrete groups: Gaussian actions. These actions are somehow a generalization of Bernoulli actions. We have two goals in this chapter. The first goal is to use the von Neumann algebra associated with an action as a tool to deduce properties of the initial action (see Corollary II.2.16). The second aim is to prove structural results and classification results for von Neumann algebras associated with Gaussian actions. The most striking rigidity result of the chapter is Theorem II.4.5, which states that in some cases the von Neumann algebra associated with a Gaussian action entirely remembers the action, up to conjugacy. Our results generalize similar results for Bernoulli actions ([KT08,CI10,Io11,IPV13]).In Chapter III, we study amalgamated free products of von Neumann algebras. The content of this chapter is obtained in collaboration with C. Houdayer and S. Raum. We investigate Cartan subalgebras in such amalgamated free products. In particular, we deduce that the free product of two von Neumann algebras is never obtained as a group-Measure space construction of a non-Singular action of a discrete countable group on a measured space. Finally, Chapter IV is concerned with von Neumann algebras associated with hyperbolic groups. The content of this chapter is obtained in collaboration with A. Carderi. We use the geometry of hyperbolic groups to provide new examples of maximal amenable (and yet type I) subalgebras in type II_1 factors

The Birkhoff-von Neumann (BVN) strategy for offline switching does not support multicast, as it considers only permutation-based switch configurations. This thesis extends the BVN strategy to multicast switching. Using a graph theoretic model, we show that the capacity region for a traffic pattern is precisely the stable set polytope of the pattern's "conflict graph", in the no-fanout-splitting case. We construct examples to show that, if dynamic fanout splitting is excluded, there is no clear winner in terms of rate region among various fanout splitting strategies. The problem of deciding whether a given set of rates is achievable in a multicast switch is also addressed. We show that, in general, the problem is equivalent to the membership problem for the stable set polytope of a graph, and is therefore NP-hard. We also prove that the problem is NP-hard for the case that splitting of the set of destinations, or fanout, is allowed. However, in the no-splitting case, it is polynomial time solvable when the number of multicast flows in the N x N switch is O(logN). The algorithm naturally leads to a schedule to serve the flows in a stable manner, if the rates are achievable. For an arbitrary number of multicasts, we show that, computing the offline schedule is equivalent to fractional weighted graph coloring which takes polynomial time for perfect graphs. We present several types of traffic patterns whose conflict graphs are perfect. [18] proposed a simple online algorithm called i-SLIP based on parallel iterative matching, for online unicast scheduling. We propose an online algorithm for multicast, based on i-SLIP and the conflict graph idea, and compare them with ESLIP([19]) and the copy-and- use-i-SLIP strategy, through simulations.
