Abstract:

La méthode d'analyse du cycle de vie est normalisée à un niveau général. Pourtant, il n'existe pas de règles établies pour réaliser une analyse de cycle de vie en détail pour les sources de lumière. Par conséquent, il est impossible de comparer directement les résultats qui proviennent généralement d'analyses différentes. En outre, le nombre de sources lumineuses, en particulier des lampes et luminaires à LED, augmente sur le marché. Ainsi, il serait utile d'évaluer des sources de lumière de façon similaire. Ce travail aborde le problème en présentant deux modèles, l'un simple et l'autre étendu, afin d'effectuer une analyse du cycle de vie des sources lumineuses rapidement et en toute transparence. Les modèles sont développés sur la base de quatre études de cas présentées dans la thèse et l'examen des analyses du cycle de vie trouvées dans la littérature. Des résultats similaires ont été trouvés dans les études de cas et l'examen des analyses de cycle de vie antérieures malgré les différences dans les méthodes, et les champs de l'étude. De tous les impacts environnementaux du cycle de vie, c'est la consommation d'énergie durant la phase d'utilisation qui prédomine. Il a été constaté que les impacts environnementaux sont corrélés à la durée de vie de la source lumineuse ainsi que la source d'énergie utilisée. La phase d'utilisation prédomine le plus clairement sur les impacts en cas de faible efficacité lumineuse et fabrication simple. L'importance de la fabrication devrait augmenter par l'analyse plus détaillée. Les impacts moyens des autres étapes du cycle de vie, tels que les transports et la fin de vie, sont pratiquement négligeables The life cycle assessment method is standardized on a general level, but no established rules exist for conducting a life cycle assessment of light sources in detail. In most cases, it is impossible to directly compare the results of different assessments. Because of the major changes in the lighting market, it is useful to assess the environmental impacts of various light sources in similar methods. The work addresses this problem by presenting two models, a simple and an extensive one, for conducting the life cycle assessment of light sources rapidly and in a transparent, comparative way. The models are developed on the basis of four case studies presented in the work and a review to the life cycle assessment found in the literature. The case studies and the review of the previous life cycle assessments concluded similar findings despite the differences in the methods, scopes and evaluated light sources. The main conclusion of the life cycle assessments was the clear dominance of the use stage energy consumption. The environmental impacts of the use were found to be sensitive to the life of the light source and the used energy source. The dominance of the use stage was the clearest in light sources of low luminous efficacy and low manufacturing efforts and when using high-emission energy sources. The importance of the manufacturing is estimated to increase by a more detailed assessment of the manufacturing processes. The average environmental impacts of other life cycle stages, such as transport and end-of-life, were found practically negligible, but possibly notable in a certain environmental impact category

Abstract:

Les structures de génie civil, en particulier les ponts en béton armé, doivent être conçues et gérées pour assurer les besoins de transport et de communication dans la société. Il est indispensable de garantir un fonctionnement convenable et sécuritaire de ces structures, puisque les défaillances peuvent conduire à des perturbations du transport, des pertes catastrophiques de concessions et des pertes de vies humaines, avec des impacts économiques, sociétaux et environnementaux graves, à court et à long termes. Les gestionnaires entreprennent diverses activités pour maintenir la performance et le fonctionnement adéquat à long terme, tout en satisfaisant les contraintes financières et sécuritaires. Idéalement, ils peuvent recourir à des techniques d'optimisation pour établir les compromis entre la réduction du coût du cycle de vie (LCC) et la maximisation de la durée de vie. Cela nécessite le développement de l’analyse du cycle de vie, de l’analyse de fiabilité et de l'optimisation structurale.Les approches actuelles pour la conception et la gestion des structures s’appuyant sur l’analyse du coût de cycle de vie, montrent les besoins suivants : (1) une approche intégrée et systématique pour modéliser de façon cohérente les processus de dégradation, les charges de trafic, le vieillissement et les conséquences directes et indirectes de la défaillance, (2) une considération complète des dépendances économiques, structurales et stochastiques entre les différents éléments de l’ouvrage, (3) une approche permettant de modéliser efficacement un système structural formé de plusieurs éléments interdépendants, (4) une évaluation des conséquences de la dégradation et de la redistribution des charges entre les éléments en tenant compte de la redondance du système et de la configuration de l’ouvrage, (5) une méthode d'optimisation de la conception et de la maintenance qui préserve l’exigence de fiabilité tout en considérant la robustesse de la décision. L'objectif global de cette thèse est de fournir des procédures améliorées qui peuvent être appliquées à la conception et à la gestion fiabilistes et robustes des ouvrages en béton armé, en réduisant les coûts supportés par les gestionnaires et les utilisateurs, tout en tenant compte des dépendances entre les éléments. Dans la première partie de cette thèse, une synthèse bibliographique concernant les procédures de la conception et de la maintenance basée sur des calculs fiabilistes est présentée, et les différents composants du LCC sont développés. Ensuite, une approche est proposée pour la conception des ouvrages en tenant compte du coût aux usagers et en intégrant dans la fonction du coût de cycle de vie. Le modèle couplé corrosion-fatigue est aussi considéré dans l’optimisation de la conception. La planification de la maintenance des ouvrages est ensuite développée, en considérant les différents types d'interaction entre les éléments, en particulier les dépendances économiques, structurales et stochastiques. Ce modèle utilise l'analyse de l'arbre de défaillance et les probabilités conditionnelles pour tenir compte des dépendances dans la planification de la maintenance. Les conséquences de la dégradation et de la redistribution des charges sont prises en compte dans l'approche proposée. Par ailleurs, une méthode pratique de calcul de la fiabilité d'un système formé de plusieurs composantes interdépendantes est proposée, à travers un facteur de redondance calculé par la modélisation mécanique. Enfin, une nouvelle procédure d'optimisation est proposée, permettant de tenir compte des incertitudes dans le système et la capacité structurale de s'adapter aux variabilités intrinsèques. La procédure proposée tient compte des incertitudes et de la variabilité dans une formulation cohérente, validée au moyen des applications numériques. (...) Civil engineering structures, particularly reinforced concrete bridges, should be designed and managed to ensure the society needs. It is crucial to assure that these structures function properly and safely as damage during the service life can lead to transport disturbance, catastrophic loss of property, causalities, as well as severe economic, social, and environmental impacts, in addition to long term consequences. Decision-makers adopt various activities to maintain adequate long-term performance and functionality while satisfying financial constraints. Ideally, they may employ optimization techniques to identify the trade-offs between minimizing the life-cycle cost (LCC) and maximizing the expected service life. This requires the development of three challenging chores: life cycle analysis, reliability analysis and structural optimization. The current approaches for the design and management of structures through a Life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA) highlight the following needs: (1) an integrated and systematic approach to model coherently the deterioration processes, the increasing traffic loads, the aging and the direct and indirect consequences of failure, (2) a mutual consideration of economic, structural and stochastic dependencies between the elements of a structural system, (3) an adequate approach for the deterioration dependencies and load redistribution between the elements, (4) an improvement of system reliability computation as a function of the structural redundancy and configuration that can take into account the dependencies between the elements, (5) a consideration of design and maintenance optimization procedures that focus coherently on the robustness of the management decision and on the satisfaction of reliability requirements.The overall objective of this study is to provide improved LCCA and procedures that can be applied to select optimal and robust design and maintenance decisions regarding new and existing reinforced concrete structures, by minimizing both manager and user costs, while providing the required safety along the structure lifetime, taking into account the most severe degradation processes and the dependencies between structural elements. In the first part of this thesis, a literature review concerning the current probabilistic design and maintenance procedures is presented, and the LCC components are discussed. Then, a new approach is developed to evaluate the user delay costs on a reinforced concrete bridge structure, based on direct and indirect costs related to degradation and failure, and to integrate it to the life cycle cost function, in order to allow for probabilistic design. In addition,the coupled corrosion-fatigue model is considered in the design optimization. Afterward, a structural maintenance planning approach is developed to consider the three types of interactions, namely economic, structural and stochastic dependencies. The proposed model uses fault tree analysis and conditional probabilities to reflect the dependencies in the maintenance planning. The consequences of degradation are evaluated and a method is proposed to account for the load redistribution. Moreover, a practical formulation for quantifying the reliability of a system formed of interrelated components is proposed, by the mean of a redundancy factor that can be computed by finite element analysis. Finally, a new optimization procedure is proposed, by taking into account the uncertainties in the analysis, and the structural ability to adapt to variability, unforeseen actions or deterioration mechanisms. The proposed procedure takes account of uncertainties andvariability in one consistent formulation, which is shown through numerical applications. (...)

Le processus de dimensionnement des structures et des systèmes mécaniques comportent de plusieurs étapes, allant de la définition des conditions et des besoins tout au long du cycle de vie, en vue de la spécification de la capacité et de la résistance requises pour accomplir les missions escomptées. La fiabilité figure parmi les objectifs les plus importants pour les fabricants, en plus de l'aspect économique, facteur clé, qui influence largement le processus de conception. Dans ce contexte, la conception doit être élaborée afin de définir le meilleur compromis entre la fiabilité et le coût. Ce qui implique une étude précise et détaillée de tout le cycle de vie du produit, de la naissance jusqu'à la mise au rebus. Cette étude couvre les différentes phases du cycle de vie du produit, en intégrant la nécessité de démontrer la fiabilité du produit avant de commencer la production en série, sous des contraintes de coût et de délais. Ce travail vise à donner des éléments de réponse aux trois questions suivantes : * Comment peut-on démontrer la fiabilité du produit à partir de quelques essais ? Parmi les quatre approches considérées, la méthode de composition des incertitudes montre sa robustesse pour démontrer la fiabilité du produit, sans pour autant conduire à un surdimensionnement excessif. * Quel est le critère permettant une conception robuste sous des charges répétitives pour un système non dégradable ? Dans la phase utile du cycle de vie du produit, la défaillance est principalement due à la variabilité des charges appliquées lorsque la résistance n'est pas dégradée. Le modèle d'interférence contrainte-résistance considère la probabilité de défaillance comme cible de conception. Cependant, pour le cas des charges répétitives, ce critère est sensible au nombre d'applications de ces charges. Pour cela, la conception basée sur le hasard est proposée comme outil robuste pour la conception des composants intrinsèquement fiables. * Quelle est l'approche générale permettant de traiter les mécanismes de dégradation ? Dans la phase de vieillissement, la modélisation de la dégradation est obligatoire pour plusieurs raisons, telles que la maîtrise des risques industriels et la gestion du cycle de vie. La fonction de hasard fournit un indicateur approprié pour la prévision de l'état de dégradation et par conséquent, l'estimation de la durée de vie résiduelle.

Abstract:

Tableau d’honneur de la Faculté des études supérieures et postdoctorales, 2012-2013. Dans le cadre de ce mémoire, les méthodologies de l’analyse de cycle de vie (ACV) et de l’analyse du cycle de coûts (ACC) sont appliquées à un système d’épuration des eaux usées municipales (STEP) afin de réaliser une évaluation intégrée du profil environnemental et économique du système. Suite à la revue de la littérature des ACVs portant sur des STEPs, des limitations ont été décelées en ce qui a trait à la définition de la fonction du système lors de la première étape de la réalisation de l’ACV. Les limitations dénotées ont mené au développement d’une méthodologie reposant sur le concept de bénéfice environnemental net (BEN) afin d’y pallier. La mise en application du concept de BEN requiert de réaliser des ACVs afin d’évaluer les impacts environnementaux potentiels évités et induits par l’épuration des eaux. Les impacts évités correspondent alors à la différence d’impacts potentiels entre un scénario hypothétique de rejet des eaux usées brutes et un scénario de rejet des eaux usées épurées par la STEP. Les impacts induits correspondent aux impacts générés par le cycle de vie du système d’épuration. Il est à noter que la présentation du concept de BEN ainsi que son application à une l’étude de cas font l’objet d’une publication (Godin et coll., 2012). Les méthodologies du BEN et de l’ACC sont appliquées à l’étude de cas d’un système d’épuration constitué d’étangs aérés facultatifs. Des inventaires des charges des polluants de l’affluent et de l’effluent de la STEP sont compilés afin d’évaluer les impacts potentiels évités en considérant les charges en matières organiques, en nutriments et en métaux lourds ainsi qu’en estimant les émissions potentielles de gaz à effet de serre des rejets directs de matière organique et d’azote au milieu récepteur. Les inventaires de caractérisation des impacts du cycle de vie du système incluent la phase de construction, l’opération ainsi que l’évaluation des impacts induits par une disposition des boues par épandage sur sol agricole et sur sol forestier. L’ACVI réalisée en ayant recours à la méthode ReCiPe et en mettant de l’avant le concept de BEN permet de constater le compromis environnemental fourni par le système d’épuration. L’évaluation comparée de l’ACC et de l’ACV du cycle de vie du système permet d’évaluer la contribution relative des différents éléments du cycle de vie sous les aspects environnementaux et économiques. La comparaison des variantes de disposition des boues permet, quant à elle, de comparer les effets sur les catégories d’impacts potentiels liées à la toxicité du choix du milieu récepteur des boues. L’application de la méthodologie du BEN lors de la réalisation d’ACV portant sur des STEPs permet de définir plus clairement la fonction principale de la STEP et permet d’éviter de considérer la STEP comme une source majeure de pollution. Elle fait de plus ressortir le manque de suivi des eaux usées en ce qui a trait à l’affluent ainsi qu’aux micropolluants. Life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle costing (LCC) methodologies are applied to a municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in order to conduct an integrated environmental and economic assessment of the system. A Literature review showed that the system function definition has received little attention despite its great importance in past LCA studies applied to wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). This has led to some limitations in the interpretation of LCA results. A new methodology to perform LCA on WWTPs is proposed to avoid those limitations. It is based on net environmental benefit (NEB) evaluation and requires assessing the potential impact of releasing wastewater without and with treatment besides assessing the impact of the WWTP’s life cycle. Interested readers can find a presentation of the NEB methodology and its application to a case study of a small municipal WWTP consisting of facultative aerated lagoons in Godin et al., (2012). This thesis presents the life cycle inventories (LCI) conducted to perform the LCAs required to estimate the NEB and also shows the inventory and results of the LCC performed on the case study. LCIs include wastewater characterization (i.e. organic matter, phosphorus, nitrogen and heavy metals load), potential greenhouse gas emissions, WWTP construction and operation inventories including sludge removal and disposal. Life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) was conducted using the ReCiPe impact assessment method. LCIA and LCC results allow comparing the relative contribution to environmental potential impacts and economic cost of the life cycle steps of the WWTP. The NEB allows showing the environmental trade-offs between avoided impact due to wastewater treatment and induced impact by the WWTP’s life cycle.

Abstract:

Il y a une préoccupation croissante quant à l’impact de nos modes de consommation et de production sur notre planète, au point que nous atteignons les limites de croissance avec la planète incapable d’assimiler indéfiniment les effets des activités anthropiques. En conséquence, au cours des dernières années, les préoccupations croissantes concernant le changement climatique ont poussé les organisations commerciales à changer leurs priorités, non seulement pour atteindre des objectifs économiques, mais également pour considérer les objectifs écologiques. La foresterie, qui est une partie importante de la nature, a traditionnellement été un fournisseur de matières premières renouvelables pour l’utilisation industrielle (sciage, pâte et papier, panneaux de particules, etc.) et pour le bois de chauffage domestique. Bien que de nombreuses études aient été menées dans ce domaine, peu d’attention a été accordée à l’importance de l’évaluation monétaire de l’impact environnemental négatif pour déterminer le véritable prix des produits en bois et prendre une décision éclairée pour l’investissement. Cette étude vise à évaluer la performance économique et environnementale de cinq produits en bois de pin maritime, issus du processus Gate-to-Gate dans la forêt des Landes de Gascogne en France. Les données ont été collectées sur la base d’une revue de la littérature et des références mentionnées dans le chapitre quatre et le chapitre cinq de cette étude, puis ces données ont été utilisées dans l’analyse du logiciel semipro pour identifier l’impact environnemental (Gate-to-gate) pour les produits étudiés par la méthodologie d’évaluation du cycle de vie (LCA) et un modèle de coût a été établi pour chaque produit par la méthodologie de coût du cycle de vie (LCC). Ensuite, les deux méthodologies ont été liées en utilisant la comptabilité des coûts des flux de matières (MFCA), et les résultats ont correspondu à la part de marché spécifiée dans le chapitre trois par l’analyse des flux de matières (MFA) There is an increasing understanding that our consumption and production patterns have to change to stay within our planetary boundaries, the planet being unable to indefinitely assimilate the effects of current anthropic activities. Correspondingly, in recent years, growing concerns about climate change pollution and biodiversity loss have driven business organizations to change their priorities, not only to achieve economic objectives, but also to consider ecological goals. Forestry, an important part of natural systems, has been a traditional supplier of renewable raw materials for industrial use (e.g., sawmilling for construction wood, pulp and paper, particle boards), as well as for domestic fuelwood. Although many studies have been conducted in this field, little attention has been paid to the importance of the monetary valuation of negative environmental impacts in order to determine the true price of wood products to take informed investment decisions. This study aims to assess economic and environmental performance of five maritime pinewood products during the gate-to-gate process (harvesting to semifinal product) in the Landes de Gascogne Forest (“Landes Forest”) in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The product groups considered are construction wood, pulp, plywood, pellets and pallets. For this purpose, the study uses several systemanalytical methods in combination: material flow analysis (MFA), life-cycle assessment (LCA), life cycle costing (LCC) and material flow cost accounting (MFCA). The relevant MFA data in Chapter 3 was collected from an industrial partner and based on databases, literature sources and other references to obtain Life Cycle Inventories for the LCA study in Chapter 4. The LCA software SimaPro was used for this analysis, applying the ReCiPe life-cycle impact assessment method to identify the environmental impact (gate-to-gate) of the studied products. A cost model based on the Environmental Prices Handbook was developed in Chapter 5 to estimate the external costs based on the environmental impact results. This has been set for each product group and integrated into environmental LCC to compare the external with the internal costs, in far as possible with the data available. The methodologies have been tied together in Chapter 6 using MFCA; results correspond to the market share specified in Chapter 3 by MFA. We found that, among the studied products, unbleached pulp and plywood production have the highest economic and environmental costs at €32.36/€15.13 and €27.22/€7.14, respectively. That means that the best use of raw timber is as construction wood due to two reasons: first, the long lifespan of construction wood compared to other studied products; second, not only is less energy is required in the production process, but chemical materials are also absent from the process. This study proposes a suitable methodology framework for the economic and environmental assessment of forest products and other industries. Abstract:

The recognition of nature in the resolution of societal challenges has been growing in relevance. This recognition has been associated with the development of new concepts from science and policy such as natural capital, ecosystem services, green infrastructure, and more recently Nature-Based Solutions (NBS). NBS intends to address societal challenges in an effective and adaptive form providing economic, social, and environmental benefits. The overall aim of this PhD thesis is to develop an environmental and economic assessment of NBS for highly urbanised territories based on rationales and models underpinning ecosystem services, urban/landscape ecology, and life cycle thinking approaches. This combined evaluation approach would help to better understand if NBS are cost-effective or not. The aim is developed according to four specific objectives. The first objective corresponds to the characterisation of NBS in relation to urban contexts and the problematics that they can help to address or mitigate. To achieve this objective a critical review on the study of the relationship between NBS, ecosystem services (ES) and urban challenges (UC) was developed. As a main output, a graph of plausible cause-effect relationships between NBS, ES and UC is obtained. The graph represents a first step to support sustainable urban planning, moving from problems (i.e. urban challenges) to actions (i.e. NBS) to resolutions (i.e. ES). The second objective corresponds to the definition of an adequate set of biophysical and monetary assessment methods and indicators to evaluate the value of NBS in urbanised contexts. To achieve this objective, a review of existing methods on ecosystem services valuation, life cycle cost analysis and life-cycle assessment are developed. The review takes into account specific constraints such as easiness to use and availability of data. At the end, potential methods and indicators were selected, which will be later integrated in the combined assessment framework. The third objective corresponds to the design of a combined assessment framework integrating methods from life cycle assessment, landscape/urban ecology and ecosystem services that quantifies the environmental and economic value of NBS informing about the cost-effectiveness of its entire life cycle. To achieve this objective, a conceptual framework is developed. From it, a system dynamics model of ecosystem (dis)services is developed and coupled with a life cycle assessment method. The combined evaluation is tested with a relevant NBS type (i.e. urban forest) in a case study in the metropolitan area of Madrid. The fourth objective is the development of a decision support (DSS) tool that integrates the assessment framework as part of iterative design processes in urban planning and landscape design. The DSS intends to enhance the interrelation between science, policy and planning/design. To achieve this objective a user-friendly web-based prototype DSS on NBS, called NBenefit$®, is developed. The prototype DSS provides the user a simple form of quantifying the provision of multiple ES and costs over the entire life cycle (implementation, operational life, and end-of-life) of NBS. This thesis contributed to the characterisation of NBS and its environmental and economic assessment to inform urban planning and landscape design processes, allowing decisions that are more informed. Il riconoscimento della natura nella risoluzione delle sfide sociali è diventato sempre più importante. Questo riconoscimento è stato associato allo sviluppo di nuovi concetti provenienti dalla scienza e dalla politica, come il capitale naturale, i servizi ecosistemici, le infrastrutture verdi e, più recentemente, le soluzioni basate sulla natura (NBS). NBS intende affrontare le sfide della società in una forma efficace e adattabile fornendo benefici economici, sociali e ambientali. Lo scopo di ricerca di questa tesi di dottorato è quello di sviluppare una valutazione ambientale ed economica delle NBS per territori altamente urbanizzati basata su logiche e modelli che hanno alla base i servizi ecosistemici, l'ecologia urbana e paesaggistica e degli approcci di approcio life cycle. Questo quadro di valutazione combinato aiuterebbe a capire meglio se le NBS sono costo effetive e se contribuiscono a uno sviluppo resiliente e sostenibile. Questo scopo di ricerca è sviluppato secondo quattro obiettivi specifici. Il primo obiettivo corrisponde alla caratterizzazione delle NBS in relazione ai contesti urbani e alle problematiche che possono aiutare ad affrontare o mitigare. Per raggiungere questo obiettivo è stata sviluppata una revisione critica dell letteratura sullo studio della relazione tra NBS, servizi ecosistemici (ES) e sfide urbane (UC). Come risultato principale, si ottiene un grafico delle relazioni causa-effetto plausibili tra NBS, ES ed UC. Il grafico rappresenta un primo passo per supportare la pianificazione urbana sostenibile, passando dai problemi (es. UC) alle azioni (es. NBS) alle risoluzioni (es. ES). Il secondo obiettivo corrisponde alla definizione di un set di metodi e indicatori di valutazione biofisica e monetaria adeguate per valutare il valore della NBS in contesti urbanizzati. Per raggiungere questo obiettivo, viene sviluppata una revisione dei metodi esistenti sulla valutazione dei servizi ecosistemici, l'analisi dei costi del ciclo di vita e la valutazione del ciclo di vita. La revisione tiene conto di vincoli specifici come la facilità d'uso e la disponibilità dei dati. Alla fine, sono stati selezionati potenziali metodi e indicatori, che saranno successivamente integrati nel quadro di valutazione combinato. Il terzo obiettivo corrisponde alla progettazione del quadro di valutazione combinato, integrando metodi di valutazione del ciclo di vita, ecologia paesaggistica / urbana e servizi ecosistemici che quantifica il valore ambientale ed economico della NBS informando sull'efficacia in termini di costi del suo intero ciclo di vita. Per raggiungere questo obiettivo, prima viene sviluppato un quadro concettuale. Da esso, viene sviluppato un modello di dinamica di sistemi per calcolare i servizi (e disservici) ecosistemici, il quale è interrelazionato con un metodo di valutazione life cycle. Questa valutazione combinata viene testata con un tipo di NBS pertinente (foresta urbana) in un caso di studio nell'area metropolitana di Madrid. Il quarto obiettivo è lo sviluppo di uno strumento di supporto decisionale (DSS) che integri il quadro di valutazione come parte dei processi di progettazione iterativa nella pianificazione urbana e nella progettazione del paesaggio. Il DSS intende migliorare l'interrelazione tra scienza, politica e pianificazione / progettazione. Per raggiungere questo obiettivo è stato sviluppato Nbenefit$® un prototipo di DSS online per la valutazzione NBS di facile uso. Il prototipo DSS fornisce all'utente una forma semplice per quantificare multipli ES e costi (internalizatti o no) durante l'intero ciclo di vita (implementazione, vita operativa e fine vita) del NBS. In conclusione, questa tesi ha contribuito alla caratterizzazione di NBS e alla sua valutazione ambientale ed economica per informare i processi di pianificazione urbana e progettazione del paesaggio, consentendo decisioni più informate.

Abstract:

The recognition of nature in the resolution of societal challenges has been growing in relevance. This recognition has been associated with the development of new concepts from science and policy such as natural capital, ecosystem services, green infrastructure, and more recently Nature-Based Solutions (NBS). NBS intends to address societal challenges in an effective and adaptive form providing economic, social, and environmental benefits. The overall aim of this PhD thesis is to develop an environmental and economic assessment of NBS for highly urbanised territories based on rationales and models underpinning ecosystem services, urban/landscape ecology, and life cycle thinking approaches. This combined evaluation approach would help to better understand if NBS are cost-effective or not. The aim is developed according to four specific objectives. The first objective corresponds to the characterisation of NBS in relation to urban contexts and the problematics that they can help to address or mitigate. To achieve this objective a critical review on the study of the relationship between NBS, ecosystem services (ES) and urban challenges (UC) was developed. As a main output, a graph of plausible cause-effect relationships between NBS, ES and UC is obtained. The graph represents a first step to support sustainable urban planning, moving from problems (i.e. urban challenges) to actions (i.e. NBS) to resolutions (i.e. ES). The second objective corresponds to the definition of an adequate set of biophysical and monetary assessment methods and indicators to evaluate the value of NBS in urbanised contexts. To achieve this objective, a review of existing methods on ecosystem services valuation, life cycle cost analysis and life-cycle assessment are developed. The review takes into account specific constraints such as easiness to use and availability of data. At the end, potential methods and indicators were selected, which will be later integrated in the combined assessment framework. The third objective corresponds to the design of a combined assessment framework integrating methods from life cycle assessment, landscape/urban ecology and ecosystem services that quantifies the environmental and economic value of NBS informing about the cost-effectiveness of its entire life cycle. To achieve this objective, a conceptual framework is developed. From it, a system dynamics model of ecosystem (dis)services is developed and coupled with a life cycle assessment method. The combined evaluation is tested with a relevant NBS type (i.e. urban forest) in a case study in the metropolitan area of Madrid. The fourth objective is the development of a decision support (DSS) tool that integrates the assessment framework as part of iterative design processes in urban planning and landscape design. The DSS intends to enhance the interrelation between science, policy and planning/design. To achieve this objective a user-friendly web-based prototype DSS on NBS, called NBenefit$®, is developed. The prototype DSS provides the user a simple form of quantifying the provision of multiple ES and costs over the entire life cycle (implementation, operational life, and end-of-life) of NBS. This thesis contributed to the characterisation of NBS and its environmental and economic assessment to inform urban planning and landscape design processes, allowing decisions that are more informed. Il riconoscimento della natura nella risoluzione delle sfide sociali è diventato sempre più importante. Questo riconoscimento è stato associato allo sviluppo di nuovi concetti provenienti dalla scienza e dalla politica, come il capitale naturale, i servizi ecosistemici, le infrastrutture verdi e, più recentemente, le soluzioni basate sulla natura (NBS). NBS intende affrontare le sfide della società in una forma efficace e adattabile fornendo benefici economici, sociali e ambientali. Lo scopo di ricerca di questa tesi di dottorato è quello di sviluppare una valutazione ambientale ed economica delle NBS per territori altamente urbanizzati basata su logiche e modelli che hanno alla base i servizi ecosistemici, l'ecologia urbana e paesaggistica e degli approcci di approcio life cycle. Questo quadro di valutazione combinato aiuterebbe a capire meglio se le NBS sono costo effetive e se contribuiscono a uno sviluppo resiliente e sostenibile. Questo scopo di ricerca è sviluppato secondo quattro obiettivi specifici. Il primo obiettivo corrisponde alla caratterizzazione delle NBS in relazione ai contesti urbani e alle problematiche che possono aiutare ad affrontare o mitigare. Per raggiungere questo obiettivo è stata sviluppata una revisione critica dell letteratura sullo studio della relazione tra NBS, servizi ecosistemici (ES) e sfide urbane (UC). Come risultato principale, si ottiene un grafico delle relazioni causa-effetto plausibili tra NBS, ES ed UC. Il grafico rappresenta un primo passo per supportare la pianificazione urbana sostenibile, passando dai problemi (es. UC) alle azioni (es. NBS) alle risoluzioni (es. ES). Avec l’apparition des différentes normes et règlementations telles que les normes ISO 14001, les préoccupations industrielles y compris ferroviaires sont de plus en plus orientés vers l’éco-conception. La problématique la plus importante dans l’éco-conception des produits ferroviaires est de réduire leurs impacts environnementaux tout en maintenant leurs performances fonctionnelles et en maitrisant le coût. La solution pour surmonter ce problème est de trouver un ensemble de compromis entre les deux objectifs (impacts et coût).L’éco-conception des produits ferroviaires présentent plusieurs difficultés parce que, d’une part, leur analyse de cycle de vie est très lourde. D’autre part, l’intégration de leurs impacts dans la phase de conception est délicate vu leur nombre. Enfin, ces composants ont parfois différents types de modèles à exploiter car ils présentent des compromis entre la précision et le temps de calcul. Pour surmonter ces problèmes nous avons présenté dans cette thèse une méthode qui consiste premièrement, à alléger l’ACV à l’aide d’un logiciel de gestion environnementale et d’en profiter pour construire un modèle malléable pour calculer les différents impacts. Deuxièmement, à agréger ces impacts pour obtenir un seul indice qui sera considéré comme notre critère environnemental. Pour exploiter les outils d’optimisation, le problème d’éco-conception est traduit par un problème d’optimisation. Les algorithmes d’optimisation sont capables de trouver l’ensemble de compromis optimaux entre le critère environnemental et la masse (coût) sous forme d’un graphe appelé front de Pareto. Certains algorithmes ont été adaptés pour mieux servir dans l’éco-conception With the introduction of different environmental standards like ISO 14001, concerns of manufacturers in railway industry are more and more oriented to the design of green products. Ces travaux de thèse portent sur le développement et la gestion des Systèmes Produit-Service (ou Product-Service Systems, PSS) automobiles. Ces nouvelles offres intégrées de produits et services comportent des spécificités qui obligent à dépasser les démarches de développement des produits historiques considérés. Dans un état de l’art, ces travaux s’intéressent aux cadres méthodologiques pour le développement des PSS. Le premier niveau de ces cadres, focalisé sur les approches d’ingénierie, porte sur le Service Lifecycle Management (SLM) et son interaction avec le Product Lifecycle Management (PLM). Le deuxième niveau du cadre méthodologique s’intéresse aux processus et méthodes de développement des systèmes et PSS. Le troisième niveau du cadre méthodologique s’intéresse aux modélisations de PSS. La proposition est définie à travers les trois niveaux du cadre méthodologique, en respect de 7 critères retenus pour l’ingénierie des PSS. Elle repose sur un schéma d’interaction entre le PLM et le SLM détaillé, supportant un processus de développement, intégrant les pratiques de gestion de la diversité et d’Ingénierie Système. L’ensemble est cohérent avec une modélisation des PSS intégrant les architectures système, et basé sur le FBS et le triplet Result-Ressource-Process essentiels à la description du service. Deux cas d’étude ont permis d’expérimenter cette proposition. Le premier cas d’étude, portant sur un PSS existant et maitrisé, s’est traduit en la spécification d’un outil d’amélioration de la qualité du service. Le deuxième cas d’étude porte sur un PSS de diagnostic connecté et permet d’illustrer la proposition pour supporter son déploiement dans l’entreprise This research work is exploring the development and management of Product-Service Systems. These new integrated offers go along with specific issues which challenge the current product development strategies. Analyzing the academic literature on this matter, this work focuses on methodological frameworks for the development of PSS offers. The first level of these frameworks is about engineering approaches considers Service Lifecycle Management (SLM) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) interactions. The second level is about specific systems or PSS development processes and methods. The third and last level challenges the definitions of a PSS model. Fed by this review, this work provides a coherent proposal for PSS development across these three levels, qualified by 7 analysis criterias. On the first level, a detailed PLM-SLM interaction scheme is proposed. It supports a development process on the second level, alongside a PSS model based on FBS and result-resource-process triplet as a matter for service adequate description. This proposal has been experimented through two study cases. The first one, about an existing and mature PSS, enabled the development of a quality management tool. The second, about the development of a connected diagnostic PSS enabled to strengthen the illustration of the proposal for its adoption

Abstract:

Cette thèse est une contribution à l'étude des systèmes hybrides éoliens-photovoltaïques avec batteries sur plusieurs aspects : évaluation des sources, modélisation, simulation, optimisation du dimensionnement et enfin commande et supervision. Ainsi, dans un premier temps, une étude d'impact sur l'évaluation du potentiel en énergies renouvelables sur un site donné en prenant en compte la consommation dans un habitat résidentiel (période et méthode d'acquisition des données, techniques d'évaluation, ...) est présentée. Puis, les modèles énergétiques des différents composants du système ainsi que les aspects économiques et écologiques sont définis. L'ensemble est représenté à l'aide du logiciel Matlab/Simulink. Ensuite, une méthodologie d'optimisation du dimensionnement du système multi-sources est développée et comparée à plusieurs approches, allant d'une optimisation mono-objective à une multi-objective et évaluant le coût économique et écologique de chacune de ces solutions. Une solution « pratique » est retenue pour les composants PV, éolien et batteries du système final afin d'en évaluer la viabilité énergétique, économique et écologique. Les résultats montrent un impact environnemental faible et un coût raisonnable du point de vue économique ainsi qu'une satisfaction de la charge dans les limites tolérées par l'usager. La méthode développée de dimensionnement est comparée à un outil commercial existant. Enfin, un banc expérimental PV-éolien avec batteries est mis en oeuvre avec une nouvelle technique de supervision basée sur le contrôle des courants et l'estimation de l'état de charge des batteries This thesis is a contribution to the study of photovoltaic-wind-battery hybrid systems for several aspects: source evaluation, modeling and simulation, design optimization and finally control and supervision. Thus, an impact study on the evaluation of renewable energy potential at a given site taking into account consumption in residential housing (period and method of data acquisition, evaluation techniques...) is presented. In addition, all the components of the system are modeled and economic and ecological aspects are defined in order to make an overall assessment of various system configurations. All models are represented using Matlab/Simulink tool. Then, a methodology for single and multi-objective design optimization of a multi-source system is developed to minimize system Life Cycle Cost (LCC), Embodied Energy (EE) and Loss of Power Supply Probability (LPSP). A "practice solution" is thus retained and evaluated. Results show a low environmental impact and a reasonable economic cost as well as a satisfaction of the load within the limits tolerated by the user. Besides, a very convincing comparison of the developed sizing method to an existing commercial tool is presented. At the end, an experimental PV-wind-battery tested is developed in laboratory to ensure a quasi-realistic emulation of hybrid system behavior for different configurations. Accordingly, a new supervision strategy based on currents control and battery state of charge estimation is successfully validated

Elle explore les limites du cadre actuel d'élaboration de scénarios prospectifs utilisé par le Groupe d'experts intergouvernemental sur l'évolution du climat (GIEC) et présente de nouvelles approches alternatives et complémentaires pour surmonter ces limites. À l'aide de Pathfinder, un modèle simple axé sur le climat et le cycle du carbone, on investit un espace inexploré par la gamme des modèles climatiques simples existants en incorporant les données les plus récentes et en inversant le processus usuel de génération des scénarios de changement climatique.Des perspectives d'amélioration de notre modèle sont ensuite identifiées en examinant la représentation de l'océan dans Pathfinder, en se concentrant sur le Nexus chaleur-carbone océanique et son rôle critique dans le cycle global du carbone et la réponse du climat aux émissions cumulées de CO2. Une comparaison est faite entre les représentations de l'interface carbone-chaleur océanique dans Pathfinder et les modèles du système terrestre les plus récents, mettant en évidence les divergences significatives et les implications potentielles pour les scénarios de réchauffement à venir.Après avoir présenté Pathfinder en détail, ma recherche examine tout d'abord les réductions d'émissions de CO2 physiquement nécessaires pour atteindre l'objectif de réchauffement global de 1,5C, en soulignant l'importance des émissions de CO2 provenant de l'utilisation des terres et du forçage non lié au CO2. Nous inversons ensuite la chaîne de causalité pour relier les impacts environnementaux aux activités anthropiques, ce qui constitue une approche unique. L'étude cartographie les espaces d'activités anthropiques compatibles avec certaines limites planétaires et introduit un cadre de modélisation qui tient compte du réchauffement climatique, de l'acidification des océans, de l'élévation du niveau de la mer et de la fonte de la banquise arctique.En outre, cette thèse examine le rôle des modèles d'évaluation intégrée dans la compréhension des coûts d'atténuation des émissions associés à ces scénarios climatiques. Elle explore l'impact des choix conceptuels dans ces modèles sur l'identification de scénarios d'atténuation robustes et examine les effets de l'incertitude physique et de l'équité intergénérationnelle.Ce manuscrit se termine par une appréciation des contributions clés de ma recherche doctorale à la modélisation du changement climatique, l'exploration de nouvelles frontières et opportunités dans le domaine, et de mon ressenti personnel sur le domaine de recherche. Dans l'ensemble, cette thèse représente une approche unique et innovante de la modélisation du changement climatique qui, je l'espère, fournira des outils pratiques pour l'évaluation et le développement de stratégies d'atténuation This dissertation presents a multidisciplinary approach to climate change research. It explores the limitations of the current scenario-building framework used by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and presents new strategies for better understanding climate futures. Using Pathfinder, a simple model focused on climate and the carbon cycle, this research fills a gap in the range of existing simple climate models by incorporating the latest data and providing a backward, temperature-driven examination of climate change scenarios.Prospects for improvement are then identified by discussing the representation of the ocean in Pathfinder, focusing on the Ocean Heat-Carbon Nexus and its critical role in the global carbon cycle and the response of Earth's climate to cumulative CO2 emissions. A comparison is made between the representations of the Ocean Heat-Carbon Nexus in Pathfinder and state-of-the-art Earth system models, highlighting the significant discrepancies and potential implications for future warming scenarios.After introducing Pathfinder, my research first examines the CO2 emission reductions physically required to meet the 1.5C global warming target, emphasizing the importance of CO2 emissions from land use and non-CO2 forcing. We then reverse the causal chain to link environmental impacts to anthropogenic activities, which is a unique approach. The study maps the spaces of anthropogenic activities compatible with planetary boundaries and introduces a modeling framework that accounts for global warming, ocean acidification, sea level rise, and Arctic sea ice melt.Furthermore, this thesis examines the role of Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs) in understanding the costs associated with these climate scenarios. It explores the impact of conceptual choices in these models on the identification of robust mitigation pathways and examines the effects of physical uncertainty and intergenerational equity.This manuscript concludes with an appreciation of the key contributions of my doctoral research to climate change modeling, exploration of new frontiers and opportunities in the field, and personal insights into the research journey. Overall, this research represents a unique, innovative approach to climate change modeling that will hopefully provide practical tools for assessing and developing mitigation strategies

Les modèles mathématiques non linéaires de Black-Scholes sont des modèles qui permettent de valoriser le coût d'une option Européenne en tenant compte d'hypothèses plus réalistes sur les marchés financiers que les modèles classiques linéaires. La contribution de cette thèse ne concerne pas l'étude de l'équation différentielle stochastique, mais l'étude d'un problème limite obtenu par G. Barles et H. Soner. Ce problème limite est une équation aux dérivées partielles déterministe fortement non linéaire de type parabolique dégénérée. Le coeur de la thèse est l’étude à la fois théorique et numérique de cette EDP déterministe. L'analyse théorique du modèle déterministe de G. Barles et H. Soner a été réalisée à l’aide d’une approche récente qui consiste à faire un changement de variable afin de placer le problème dans le cadre des équations de type Barenblatt de la forme (β(u_t)=Δu) où β est une fonction monotone. D'une part, nous avons étudié le problème avec des méthodes standard (utilisant la monotonie du système), plutôt que la théorie des solutions de viscosité. Nous avons également développé une méthode multigrille (en variable d'espace) afin de simuler numériquement la solution du problème de Barles et Soner en un temps raisonnable. Le gain attendu est une simulation numérique moins coûteuse en temps que les méthodes itératives de résolution numérique standard de type Gauss-Seidel. D'autre part, nous avons développé un modèle bidimensionnel pour une option panier en présence des coûts de transaction. Bien que ce produit financier soit simple. Il n'en demeure pas moins que cet instrument est complexe. En effet, comme pour la majorité des options multi-dimensionnelles, les équations modélisant les options paniers n'ont pas de solution analytique même dans le cas linéaire. Nous devons donc recourir à des méthodes numériques, mais l'efficacité de ces dernières est sensible à la dimension de l’espace. D'où l'intérêt de l'application de la méthode multi-grille The major contribution of this thesis is the theoretical study of a nonlinear Black-Scholes equation resulting from market frictions, like pricing options under transaction costs. We focused our attention on the Barles and Soner's model where the volatility is enlarged due to the presence of transaction costs and depends not only on the underlying asset and time but depends also on the second derivative of the option price. On the one hand we give a constructive mathematical approach for proving the existence of convex solutions for the Barles and Soner equation which is a non degenerate fully nonlinear deterministic problem with nonlinear dependence upon the highest derivative. The existence of a strong solution to the original equation is shown by considering a monotone sequence satisfying an abstract Barenblatt equation and converging toward the solution of a limit problem. On the other hand, we give a numerical simulation using finite difference technique since an exact solution of the Barles and Soner problem does not exist. Another contribution of this thesis is the pricing of a European basket options in the presence of transaction costs. We develop a model that incorporates the illiquidity of the market into the classical two-assets Black-Scholes framework. We perform a numerical simulation using finite difference method. We consider a multigrid method in order to reduce computational costs. The aim of this study is to investigate a deterministic extension for the Barles and Soner model and to demonstrate the effectiveness of multigrid approach to solving a fully nonlinear two dimensional Black-Scholes problem

The cost of a road construction over its service life is a function of design, quality of construction as well as maintenance strategies and operations. An optimal life-cycle cost for a road requires evaluations of the above mentioned components. Unfortunately, road designers often neglect a very important aspect, namely, the possibility to perform future maintenance activities. Focus is mainly directed towards other aspects such as investment costs, traffic safety, aesthetic appearance, regional development and environmental effects. This doctoral thesis presents the results of a research project aimed to increase consideration of road maintenance aspects in the planning and design process. The following subgoals were established: Identify the obstacles that prevent adequate consideration of future maintenance during the road planning and design process; and Examine optimisation of life-cycle costs as an approach towards increased efficiency during the road planning and design process. The research project started with a literature review aimed at evaluating the extent to which maintenance aspects are considered during road planning and design as an improvement potential for maintenance efficiency. Efforts made by road authorities to increase efficiency, especially maintenance efficiency, were evaluated. The results indicated that all the evaluated efforts had one thing in common, namely ignorance of the interrelationship between geometrical road design and maintenance as an effective tool to increase maintenance efficiency. Focus has mainly been on improving operating practises and maintenance procedures. This fact might also explain why some efforts to increase maintenance efficiency have been less successful. An investigation was conducted to identify the problems and difficulties, which obstruct due consideration of maintainability during the road planning and design process. A method called “Change Analysis” was used to analyse data collected during interviews with experts in road design and maintenance. The study indicated a complex combination of problems which result in inadequate consideration of maintenance aspects when planning and designing roads. The identified problems were classified into six categories: insufficient consulting, insufficient knowledge, regulations and specifications without consideration of maintenance aspects, insufficient planning and design activities, inadequate organisation and demands from other authorities. Several urgent needs for changes to eliminate these problems were identified. One of the problems identified in the above mentioned study as an obstacle for due consideration of maintenance aspects during road design was the absence of a model for calculating life-cycle costs for roads. Because of this lack of knowledge, the research project focused on implementing a new approach for calculating and analysing life-cycle costs for roads with emphasis on the relationship between road design and road maintainability. Road barriers were chosen as an example. The ambition is to develop this approach to cover other road components at a later stage. A study was conducted to quantify repair rates for barriers and associated repair costs as one of the major maintenance costs for road barriers. A method called “Case Study Research Method” was used to analyse the effect of several factors on barrier repairs costs, such as barrier type, road type, posted speed and seasonal effect. The analyses were based on documented data associated with 1625 repairs conducted in four different geographical regions in Sweden during 2006. A model for calculation of average repair costs per vehicle kilometres was created. Significant differences in the barrier repair costs were found between the studied barrier types. In another study, the injuries associated with road barrier collisions and the corresponding influencing factors were analysed. The analyses in this study were based on documented data from actual barrier collisions between 2005 and 2008 in Sweden. The result was used to calculate the cost for injuries associated with barrier collisions as a part of the socio-economic cost for road barriers. The results showed significant differences in the number of injuries associated with collisions with different barrier types. To calculate and analyse life-cycle costs for road barriers a new approach was developed based on a method called “Activity-based Life-cycle Costing”. By modelling uncertainties, the presented approach gives a possibility to identify and analyse factors crucial for optimising life-cycle costs. The study showed a great potential to increase road maintenance efficiency through road design. It also showed that road components with low investment costs might not be the best choice when including maintenance and socio-economic aspects. The difficulties and problems faced during the collection of data for calculating life-cycle costs for road barriers indicated a great need for improving current data collecting and archiving procedures. The research focused on Swedish road planning and design. However, the conclusions can be applied to other Nordic countries, where weather conditions and road design practices are similar. The general methodological approaches used in this research project may be applied also to other studies.

Le coût global est un facteur important à prendre en considération dans tout processus de prise de décision. En ce qui concerne la gestion de patrimoine immobilier ce coût représente un enjeu crucial du gestionnaire car il peut influencer tous ses choix à la phase de conception ou pendant la période d'exploitation. Bien qu'un corpus de connaissances existe sur le coût global dans l'industrie du bâtiment, il y a peu de choses sur les incertitudes pendant la période d'exploitation. Sur la base de plusieurs études de cas, un processus de retour d'expérience sur les données historiques des bâtiments étudiés a été effectué. Les résultats nous ont permis d'identifier quelques facteurs d'incertitude intervenant au cours de la période d'exploitation. Cela nous a conduit à proposer une nouvelle méthode pour l'évaluation du coût global qui intègre, sur une période de la vie de l'ouvrage, la valeur du bâtiment à l'instant d'évaluation, une estimation de sa valeur résiduelle à la fin de l'étude et, sur les coûts d'exploitation, les incertitudes liées aux imprévus tels que les nouvelles réglementations applicables, l'obsolescence technique, les adaptations fonctionnelles, etc. La constitution de la méthode dépendait de l'analyse des échantillons de deux types de bâtiments : 1) bâtiments d'habitation sociale, et 2) bâtiments industriels. Ensuite, la méthode a été examinée sur un exemple des bâtiments de bureaux. L'objectif était de choisir entre plusieurs scénarios de réhabilitation dont les durées d'études ne sont pas identiques. Les résultats de cette recherche constituent un pas vers un niveau accru de fiabilité dans l'évaluation du coût global, particulièrement intéressant pour les gestionnaires immobiliers lorsqu'ils étudient des scénarios d'évolution de leur parc Overall cost is a significant consideration in any decision-making process. In the building sector, this cost could be a crucial stake for the manager, while it influences all of his choices at the design phase as well as during the operational period. Although a body of knowledge exists on overall cost in construction, little exists on the uncertainties during the operational period or on the real life cycle development. On the basis of several case studies, a feedback process was performed on the historical data of studied buildings. This process enabled to identify some factors causing uncertainty during the building operational period. As a result, a new method for assessing the overall cost during a part of the building's life cycle was proposed. This new method takes account of the building actual value, its end-of-life value and the influence of the identified life cycle uncertainty factors such as regulatory changes, functional evolution and technological development. The development of this method was based on the analysis of two packages of buildings: 1 ) high-rise social housing, and 2) industrial buildings. Then, the method was examined on an example of office buildings. The aim was to choose between several rehabilitation scenarios with different study periods. The findings of this research are a step towards a higher level of reliability in overall cost evaluation taking account of some usually unexpected uncertainty factors

L’insomnie, en plus d’être invalidante pour les personnes qui en souffrent, peut engendrer des coûts pour la société. Le traitement de l’insomnie pourrait donc s’avérer rentable en diminuant les coûts associés à cette problématique. Le présent mémoire rapporte une analyse coût-bénéfice de la thérapie cognitive-comportementale de l’insomnie (TCC-I). Une base de données recueillies entre 2002 et 2005 a été utilisée pour effectuer cette étude. Les résultats de 74 participants ayant complété six séances de TCC-I ont été analysés, afin d’observer si la rémission de l’insomnie pouvait engendrer une diminution de l’utilisation des soins de santé, du nombre d’absences au travail et de la consommation de médicaments pour dormir. L’objectif de l’étude était d’évaluer si la TCC-I pouvait engendrer une réduction des coûts associés à l’insomnie plus élevés que les coûts de la TCC-I, démontrant que le traitement est bénéfique monétairement chez les participants en rémission. Les analyses statistiques ont démontré que les personnes en rémission rapportaient significativement moins de consultations chez un professionnel de la santé et d’absences au travail attribuables à l’insomnie. Lorsqu’une valeur monétaire était attribuée aux variables de l’étude, les dépenses associées au groupe non-rémission totalisaient 1495 $, comparé à 744 $ pour le groupe rémission, ce qui représentait une différence de coûts de 751 $. Prenant en considération que les coûts d’une TCCI étaient estimés à 490 $, une économie de 261 $ était observée trois ans après la fin du traitement chez les personnes ayant atteint une rémission de leur insomnie. Les résultats de cette étude démontrent donc que la TCC-I peut s’avérer rentable à long-terme chez les participants ayant atteint une rémission.

A well-maintained bridge infrastructure is a fundamental necessity for a modern society that provides great value, but ensuring that it meets all the requirements sustainably and cost-effectively is challenging. Bridge investment and management decisions generally involve selection from multiple alternatives. All of the options may meet the functional demands, but their life-cycle cost (LCC), service life-span, user-cost, aesthetic merit and environmental impact may differ substantially. Thus, life-cycle analysis (LCCA, a widely used decision-support technique that enables comparison of the LCC of possible options), is essential. However, although LCCA has recognized potential for rationalizing bridge procurement and management decisions its use in this context is far from systematic and the integration of LCCA findings in decisions is often far from robust. Thus, the overall objective of the work underlying this thesis has been to contribute to the development of sustainable bridge infrastructures while optimizing use of taxpayers’ money, by robustly incorporating life-cycle considerations into bridge investment and management decision-making processes. The work has introduced a full scheme for applying LCCA throughout bridges’ entire life-cycle. Several practical case studies have been presented to illustrate how an agency could benefit from use of a bridge management system (BMS) to support decisions related to the management of existing bridges and procure new bridges. Further developments include a comprehensive approach incorporating a novel LCCA technique, “LCC Added-Value Analysis”, which enables procurement of the most cost-efficient bridge design through a fair design-build (D-B) tendering process. A further contribution is a novel, holistic approach designed to enable procurement of bridges with the maximal possible sustainability (life-cycle advantages) under D-B contracts. The approach combines LCC Added-Value analysis with other techniques that make bridges’ aesthetic merit and environmental impact commensurable using an adapted concept named the willingness-to-pay-extra (WTPE). The systematic analytical procedures and potential of LCCA to deliver major savings highlighted in this thesis clearly demonstrate both the feasibility and need to integrate LCCA into bridge procurement and management decisions. This need has been recognized by Trafikverket (the Swedish Transport Administration), which has implemented a software tool developed in the research (BaTMan-LCC) in its bridge and tunnel management system (BaTMan). This thesis introduces readers to the field, considers BaTMan and the bridge stock in Sweden, discusses the developments outlined above and obstacles hindering further implementation of LCCA, then presents proposals for further advances. Dans cette démarche, la théorie économique propose des outils d'aide à la décision prenant en compte l'attitude sécuritaire commune à de nombreux domaines (environnement, transports). Abstract:

Forest fuels can be recovered, stored and handled in several ways and these different ways have different implications for CO2 emissions. In this thesis, comparative analyses were made on different forest-fuel systems. The analyses focused on the recovery and transport systems. Costs, primary energy use, CO2 emissions, storage losses and work environment associated with the use of forest fuel for energy were examined by using systems analysis methodology in a life cycle perspective. The bundle system showed less dry-matter losses and lower costs than the chip system. The difference was mainly due to more efficient forwarding, hauling and large-scale chipping. The potential of allergic reactions by workers did not differ significantly between the systems. In difficult terrain types, the loose material and roadside bundling systems become as economical as the clearcut bundle system. The stump and small roundwood systems showed the greatest increase in costs when the availability of forest fuel decreased. Stumps required the greatest increase in primary energy use. Forest fuels are a limited resource. A key factor is the amount of biomass recovered per hectare. Combined recovery of logging residues, stumps and small roundwood from thinnings from the same forest area give a high potential of reduced net CO2 emissions per hectare of forest land. Compensation fertilization becomes more cost-effective and the primary energy use for ash spreading becomes low – about 0,25‰. The total amount of available forest fuel in Sweden is 66 TWh per year. This would cost 1 billion €2007 to recover and would avoid 6.9 Mtonne carbon if fossil coal were replaced. In southern Sweden almost all forest fuel is obtainable in high-concentration areas where it is easy to recover. When determining potential CO2 emissions avoidance, the transportation distance was found to be less important than the other factors considered in this work. The type of transportation system did not have a significant influence over the CO2 avoided per hectare of forest land. The most important factor analysed here was the type of fossil fuel (coal, oil or natural gas) replaced together with the net amount of biomass recovered per hectare of forest land. Large-scale, long-distance transportation of biofuels from central Sweden has the potential to be cost-effective and also attractive in terms of CO2 emissions. A bundle recovery system meant that more biomass per hectare could be delivered to end-users than a pellet system due to conversion losses when producing pellets.

Ces industries sont notamment celles de l’acier, de l’aluminium, du ciment et de la production d’électricité. Un des meilleurs outils pour répondre à ce type de questionnement est l’analyse coût-bénéfice. Ce mémoire a pour objectif de faire l’analyse coût-bénéfice de la cimenterie de Port-Daniel-Gascon. Le projet de la cimenterie de Port-Daniel-Gascon est un exemple pertinent dans ce contexte compte tenu du soutien du gouvernement du Québec. Pour faire un portrait de l’impact de ce projet dans la province de Québec, nous procédons en quatre étapes. Premièrement, nous regardons les caractéristiques de l’industrie du ciment tel que vu par les économistes. Deuxièmement, nous regardons si le marché du ciment québécois est intégré avec celui des provinces canadiennes et des états américains l’entourant. Les résultats de trois différents tests de délimitation de marché montrent que les cimentiers québécois opèrent dans un marché québécois séparé des cimenteries des états avoisinant le Québec. Troisièmement, nous estimons les élasticités de la demande et de l’offre pour être en mesure de déterminer l’impact de cet ajout de capacité dans les différents marchés où le ciment de la nouvelle usine sera vendu. Les principaux résultats des estimations effectuées sont de -0,95 pour l’élasticité-prix de la demande et de 12,5 pour l’élasticité de l’offre. L’analyse coût-bénéfice présentée dans ce mémoire montre que la valeur actualisée nette du projet est négative pour la société québécoise même si l’utilisation de la capacité est de 100% pour les prochaines années et que d’autres hypothèses soient respectées.

La qualification d'un produit, lors des phases de développement, est une étape importante dans un projet qui vérifie que les performances et la fiabilité atteignent les objectifs. Les essais de qualification sont souvent couteux en temps et en nombre de produits testés. Les essais accélérés consistent à soumettre des unités à des niveaux de stress plus élevés qu'en condition d'exploitation afin de réduire le temps d'apparition des défaillances. Ils permettent de construire plus rapidement la fonction de fiabilité à partir d'un modèle appropriée reliant durée de vie et stress. De plus, un plan d'essai doit être construit, précisant les paramètres du plan (niveaux de stress, allocation de l'échantillon) pour trouver le meilleur compromis entre le coût d'essai et la qualité d'estimation. L'objectif de la thèse a été de définir une méthodologie de construction de plans d'essai accéléré optimaux et robustes. Nous avons donc développé un cadre général basé sur la minimisation du coût global et une approche bayésienne. Les distributions a priori, issues de la connaissance des paramètres de fiabilité et du modèle d'accélération, sont utilisées dans l'inférence bayésienne et dans une simulation de Monte Carlo d'exploration des fiabilités possibles. Le plan optimal et robuste est obtenu à partir de méthodes d'optimisation (Surface de réponse, Algorithmes génétiques). Enfin, une méthodologie de suivi des essais est développée en observant la pertinence des résultats par rapport aux informations a priori à partir d'un facteur de similitude. Il permet de vérifier si la décision quant à la qualification peut être prise plus rapidement, ou d'optimiser le plan en cours de réalisation.

Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) forms an important part of asset management practices and provides an informed decision support. The holistic nature of LCCA includes life cycle assessment (LCA) as an important component alongside economic life cycle cost analysis. The drinking water industry is right now lacking a reliable cost data structure which will ensure that all the utilities capture the same set of cost data. Also, models and tools currently available in the academia and industry are purely deterministic in nature and do not cater to uncertainty in the data. This study provides a framework for a holistic life cycle cost analysis tool which will help drinking water utilities to prioritize the activities and optimize the cost spending of the utility. The methodology includes the development of a cost data structure, a life cycle cost analysis and a life cycle assessment model in the form of an excel spreadsheet. The LCCA model has the capability to compare different pipe materials, installation, condition assessment, rehabilitation and replacement technologies. Whereas, LCA model can compare different pipe materials based on greenhouse gas emissions calculations. The final step of the methodology includes piloting the model with data from utility A. The analysis has been shown in the form of three case studies - comparison of two pipe materials, two pipe installation technologies and two pipe rehabilitation technologies. The case studies provide results in the form of comparison of total life cycle costs for different alternatives and hence a better alternative can be chosen. Master of Science

Nombre d'études semblent révéler la tendance récente à la désintégration verticale des firmes. Dans le même temps pourtant, la fréquence des opérations de concentration verticale reste élevée. L'objet de cette thèse est de tenter d'identifier les déterminants de ces évolutions de la structure verticale des industries. Pour ce faire, ce travail se place dans une double perspective théorique et empirique. Les modélisations microéconomiques de l'équilibre vertical proposées se distinguent des approches existantes (théories néo-institutionnelles et modélisations en concurrence imparfaite) par la prise en compte explicite des fondements des stratégies de désintégration verticale : la décision d'intégration ou de désintégration verticale repose sur l'arbitrage entre économies de division inter-firmes du travail et coûts d'utilisation du marché (coûts de transactions essentiellement). L'appréhension dynamique de la division du travail permet notamment de montrer que les processus d'intégration-désintégration verticale sont liés au cycle de vie de l'industrie considérée (Stigler, 1951). L'étude empirique (économétrie et analyse des données) est fondée sur l'analyse des décisions stratégiques de 200 dirigeants de grandes entreprises de production industrielle (résidant en France) interrogés sur la question. At the same time however, the frequency of vertical integration remains high. The purpose of this thesis is to identify the determining factors for the evolution of the industry's vertical structure. With this intention, this work is both theoretical and empirical. We use microeconomic models of vertical equilibrium which differ from the dominant theories (new institutional theories and models with imperfect competition) by the explicit introduction of economies of vertical disintegration. We study the decision of firms to integrate or specialize, depending on the trade-off between the gain from the inter-firm division of labour (which changes with the size of the market) and the costs derived from using the market (mainly the transaction costs). The dynamic analysis of the division of labour makes it possible to show that the process of vertical integration-disintegration is related to the life cycle of the industry (Stigler, 1951). The empirical study (econometrics and data analysis) is based on the analysis of the strategic decisions made the managers of 200 French industrial firms. It confirms that the vertical strategy of these firms is related to the stage of the industry life cycle, and also to the degree of asset specificity, which determines the level of the inter-firms transaction costs

Nous avons établi une indication chiffrée des coûts réels issus des désinflations basées sur l'ancrage nominal du taux de change. Notre analyse s'est appuyée sur deux régions ayant recouru le plus souvent au taux de change comme instrument de lutte contre l'inflation élevée chronique ou l'hyperinflation : l'Amérique latine et l'Europe centrale et orientale. En général, la stratégie d'ancrage nominal par le change est efficace pour réduire le taux d'inflation. Cette efficacité est plus marquante en Europe centrale et orientale qu'en Amérique latine, où le bilan de désinflation reste mitigé. Quant à son impact sur l'activité économique, les résultats obtenus sont moins évidents. En utilisant deux approches, factuelle et économétrique, nos estimations des ratios de sacrifice des deux régions indiquent que, quel que soit l'ancrage nominal, les coûts de la désinflation sont faibles, voire nuls. Il ressort, cependant, de notre étude, qu'il est difficile d'établir une relation entre les ratios de sacrifice et l'ancrage nominal du taux de change, dans la mesure où les résultats varient d'une méthode d'estimation à l'autre. L'hétérogénéité des ratios de sacrifice rend impossible la comparaison des coûts entre les pays, entre les régions et entre les stratégies d'ancrage nominal. Le choix d'une stratégie désinflationniste ne peut donc pas être basé sur l'analyse des ratios de sacrifice.

Ce mémoire traite du problème de la gestion d'une flotte de véhicules. Une démarche structurée qui intègre l'analyse du cycle de vie de la flotte est proposée. Différents facteurs et éléments à considérer pour l'évaluation des besoins sont tout d'abord présentés et permettent de déterminer les spécifications des véhicules ainsi que la composition de la flotte selon le profil de la demande en transport. Pour le processus d'acquisition de véhicules, une approche axée en majeure partie sur l'analyse du coût du cycle de vie est utilisée pour la sélection des véhicules. Plusieurs modèles sont également proposés afin d'optimiser l'exploitation, la maintenance et la mise en place d'un système décisionnel de renouvellement de la flotte. Finalement, pour l'équipement ayant atteint sa fin de vie utile, différentes stratégies d'aliénation sont suggérées afin de diminuer les impacts environnementaux. Le contenu de ce mémoire peut être utilisé par les gestionnaires de petites et de grandes flottes de véhicules ainsi que par les gestionnaires de projet de ce domaine qui s'intéressent à la gestion du cycle de vie d'une flotte de véhicules dans un contexte de développement durable. La démarche proposée est davantage inspirée du domaine public et parapublic mais peut également être adaptée et utilisée dans le secteur privé. Ce mémoire permettra donc aux gestionnaires de connaître les différents facteurs à prendre à considération et les meilleurs outils à utiliser pour la prise de décision, et ce, dans le but d'optimiser les différents processus de gestion du cycle de vie d'une flotte de véhicules. This thesis addresses issues related to the management of a fleet of vehicles. A structured approach integrating the analysis of fleet life cycle is proposed. Various factors and considerations for the requirements assessment are first introduced and used to determine the vehicles specifications and the fleet composition. For the vehicle acquisition process, an approach primarily driven by the life cycle cost analysis is used for the selection of vehicles. Several models are also proposed in order to optimize the exploitation, maintenance and development of a decision-making system for fleet renewal. Finally, for equipment that has reached its useful life, different disposition strategies are suggested in order to reduce environmental impacts. The contents of this thesis can be used by managers of small and large vehicle fleets as well as project managers who work in such field and that are interested in life cycle management of a vehicle fleet in a context of sustainable development. The suggested approach is further inspired by the public and para-public sector but can also be adapted and used in the private sector context. This thesis will allow managers to understand the different factors to take into consideration and the best tools to use for decision making, in order to optimize the various processes of life cycle management of a fleet of vehicles.

Le point qui oppose les deux approches identifiees porte sur la capacite des informations monetaires a offrir une traduction fidele des impacts societaux d'une activite economique. Le terrain de recherche porte sur un travail d'evaluation des couts externes environnementaux d'un procede industriel de transformation, realise pour le compte d'une grande entreprise. Il a implique la traduction monetaire des effets lies aux flux physiques du procede etudie. C'est en cela qu'il est pertinent pour le point qui oppose les deux approches susmentionnees. Les couts externes lies aux flux physiques d'un procede industriel sont exprimes par unite de produit selon trois methodes differentes, et trois hypotheses de calcul pour chaque methode (basse, mediane, haute). Le faible nombre de flux traduits monetairement, l'amplitude des resultats possibles et l'absence de normes de calcul sont les resultats majeurs de ce travail. Ils nous conduisent a juger non scientifiquement fondee toute decision de gestion s'appuyant sur l'utilisation de donnees monetaires a des fins d'evaluation et de comparaison des impacts environnementaux et a juger plus prometteuse l'approche qui consiste a laisser se developper differentes formes de comptabilite societale, de maniere autonome. A partir de cette conclusion la these propose un modele comptable elargi positionnant differentes formes de comptabilite les unes par rapport aux autres Based on a review of literature, this thesis analyses the evolution of corporate social (or societal) accounting in terms of a debate between two approaches : the first one recommends integration in financial accounting, the second one, on the contrary, pleads for the development of separate and autonomous forms of corporate social accounting. This research is carried out within the framework of the theory of stake-holders which recognises the legitimacy of constituents outside a company to request information on the corporate use of collective resources endowed on it by society. The element that opposes the two approaches to corporate social accounting concerns the ability of monetary data to give a true and fair view of the impacts on society of a given corporate economic activity. Our field work dealt with the evaluation of the environmental external costs of an industrial process in a major company. It involved giving a monetary value to the physical flows of that process. As such it is relevant to the element that opposes the two above-mentioned approaches and enables us to reach clear cut conclusions as to which one should be preferred. The external costs linked to the physical flows of an industrial process are expressed per unit of product, using three different methods, with three estimates per method (low, medium, high). The major findings of this experiment are the existence of a low number of flows for which a monetary evaluation can be carried out, the wide range of possible results, the lack of accepted standards on which to base calculations. These findings lead us to conclude that the use of monetary data to evaluate and compare environmental impacts is a scientifically unsound management practice and that the development of new forms of social accounting should be conducted separately from financial accounting. The thesis then proposes an enlarged accounting model which enables the positioning of different forms of accounting relative to one another

La première partie de ce mémoire propose un cadre conceptuel pour l'estimation des dommages comme élément d'aide à la décision, notamment dans une perspective économique intégrant le risque et l'incertitude. La deuxième partie considère l'échelle élémentaire de l'habitat, et se base sur des enquêtes réalisées sur différents sites auprès des ménages sinistrés. Après une analyse de l'occupation des zones inondables, on caractérise les composantes du facteur humain, et en particulier les réponses à l'annonce de crue et à la montée des eaux. The Highway Safety Manual (HSM) lists four different methods for determining the change in crash frequency in order of reliability. Currently, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) uses the fourth reliable method. The goal of this research was to develop a tool that the most reliable method mentioned in the HSM could be used to perform life-cycle benefit-cost analyses. A spreadsheet program was built that performs the HSM's Part C Predictive Method for 11 different roadway segment types mentioned in HSM using Excel macros and Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) programming. Intersections were not included in this spreadsheet program as they were not included in the Utah Crash Prediction Model (UCPM) or the Utah Crash Severity Model (UCSM) at the time of this research. The methodology for analysis was set up to become part of the use of the models in selecting countermeasures. The concept and spreadsheet layout are discussed using the rural two-lane two-way (TLTW) highway spreadsheet as an example. Three examples are presented in this thesis, which are a case of rural TLTW highway, a case of five-lane urban arterial with a two-way left-turn lane (TWLTL), and a case of a freeway segment, each with two selected countermeasures to compare their benefit-cost ratios (BCRs). One important aspect associated with life-cycle benefit-cost analysis of safety related improvements is the cost of countermeasures. The spreadsheets developed in this research can predict the benefits associated with a countermeasure following the methods found in the HSM; however, it does not include a module to estimate costs associated with a countermeasure to be selected because costs of countermeasures are dependent on the way such improvements are included in construction contracts. The engineer should seek guidance from the cost estimate expert within the agency or outside consultants when determining the project costs.

Le contexte hospitalier actuel exhorte les établissements de santé à une gestion plus rigoureuse et objective des ressources dans le but de maitriser leur performance. Le patrimoine immobilier des établissements publics de santé contribue à la qualité des soins demandée, à la qualité d'accueil des patients et des conditions de travail du personnel. Aujourd'hui, les hôpitaux demeurent conçus et réalisés sans aucune anticipation des coûts futurs d'exploitation-maintenance. Ces coûts qui représentent indéniablement une valeur importante du budget global de fonctionnement, sont pourtant méconnus. Afin de palier à la faiblesse des moyens de financement public, l'administration a comme recours la mise en place d'une nouvelle procédure de contrats de Partenariat Public Privé. Or celle-ci ne dispose pas d'un minimum d'informations en terme de connaissances sur les dépenses d'exploitation-maintenance actuelles de son patrimoine. Dans ce contexte, le coût global constitue une approche innovante dans la gestion des projets immobiliers.La problématique développée dans ce travail de thèse est donc d'approfondir les connaissances en amont des coûts d'exploitation-maintenance des bâtiments hospitaliers. Elle apporte un éclairage sur la relation entre les coûts d'exploitation-maintenance et l'activité hospitalière. Elle propose ainsi une réponse plus adaptée et plus opérationnelle à la question de l'estimation de ces coûts d'exploitation-maintenance en aidant le maître d'ouvrage à prendre en compte l'activité de soin et les choix architecturaux dans son projet. Cela revient à proposer une méthode d'aide à la décision pour construire un bâtiment hospitalier qui minimise les dépenses futures de fonctionnement. The real estates of public hospitals contribute to the quality of required healthcare, the quality of patient care and working conditions of healthcare staff.Today, hospitals are designed and built without anticipating of future evolution of operation and maintenance costs. These costs that are an important contribution to the value of the overall operating budget are underestimated and far unknown.To overcome the lack of public finance, the government has so used the Public Private Partnership Contracts as a new procedure. Yet the government does not have a minimum of information about operating and maintenance expenses of its real estates. In this context, the Whole Life Cycle Costing is an innovative approach in managing public healthcare real estate projects.The problem developed in this thesis is to expend is to expend the knowledge of operation and maintenance costs of healthcare real estates. This thesis highlights the relationship between operating and maintenance costs and hospital activity. It proposes a more efficient response in the issue of estimating these costs by helping the director to take into account the healthcare activity and the architectural choices. Abstract:

Using geotextiles in secondary roads to stabilize weak subgrades has been a well accepted practice over the past thirty years. However, from an economical point of view, a complete life cycle cost analysis (LCCA), which includes not only costs to agencies but also costs to users, is urgently needed to assess the benefits of using geotextile in secondary road flexible pavement. In this study, a comprehensive life cycle cost analysis framework was developed and used to quantify the initial and the future cost of 25 representative design alternatives. A 50 year analysis cycle was used to compute the cost-effectiveness ratio for the design methods. Four flexible pavement design features were selected to test the degree of influence of the frameâ s variables. The analysis evaluated these variables and examined their impact on the results. The study concludes that the cost effectiveness ratio from the two design methods shows that the lowest cost-effectiveness ratio using Al-Qadiâ s design method is 1.7 and the highest is 3.2. The average is 2.6. For Perkinsâ design method, the lowest value is 1.01 and the highest value is 5.7. The average is 2.1. The study also shows when user costs are considered, the greater TBR value may not result in the most effective life-cycle cost. Hence, for an optimum secondary road flexible pavement design with geotextile incorporated in the system, a life cycle cost analysis that includes user cost must be performed. Master of Science

La « Grande Récession » de 2008-2009 ou encore l'aggravation de la crise des dettes souveraines et de la dette publique dans la zone euro à l'été 2011, constituent de récents événements qui ont cristallisé les enjeux de l'analyse conjoncturelle, ceux relatifs notamment à la datation et à la prévision des inflexions cycliques de l'activité réelle. L'objet de cette thèse s'inscrit fondamentalement au sein de ces deux approches complémentaires du cycle économique.Le chapitre 1 dresse un portrait du cycle autour de trois conceptions distinctes de ses points de retournement : le cycle classique, le cycle de croissance et le cycle d'accélération. Nous discutons également de sa mesure eu égard aux diverses représentations possibles de l'activité agrégée d'un pays, ainsi qu'aux deux traditions existantes dans lesquelles s'inscrivent les modèles de datation. Nous mettons par ailleurs en lumière l'influence grandissante de l'environnement financier sur la dynamique cyclique des économies. Le chapitre 2 nous amène à développer deux algorithmes non-paramétriques dans le but de repérer les inflexions propres à chacun des cycles auparavant conceptualisés, mais aussipour en mesurer leurs principales caractéristiques. Le premier (resp. le second) algorithme repose sur une représentation univariée (resp. multivariée) de l'activité économique globale ; in fine, nous les appliquons aux données de la conjoncture française entre 1970 et 2010. Le chapitre 3 tire parti de nos résultats en matière de datation conjoncturelle afin de prévoir les récessions françaises depuis 1974. Au moyen de modèles probits, nous illustrons le rôle de variables financières et monétaires en tant qu'indicateurs avancés des fluctuations du cycle des affaires français. Nous montrons de plus que nos modèles prédictifs assurent uneparfaite détection des récessions pour un horizon égal à deux trimestres.Le chapitre 4 prolonge l'ensemble de l'analyse à plusieurs États membres de la zoneeuro, ces derniers étant observés depuis 1979. Nous construisons d'abord une chronologie de leurs cycles classiques respectifs puis, nous proposons un examen de leurs caractéristiques moyennes et de leur degré de synchronisation. The purpose of this thesis is to study these two complementary approaches to the economic cycle. Chapter 1 provides a portrait of the cycle using three distinct conceptions of its turning points: the classical cycle, the growth cycle and the acceleration cycle. We also discuss the measurement of the cycle with respect to various possible representations of aggregate activity of a country, as well as to two existing traditions which encompass dating models. Moreover, we highlight the growing influence of the financial environment over business cycle fluctuations.In chapter 2, we develop two non-parametric algorithms in order to identify theinflections that are particular to each of the previously conceptualized cycles, but also to measure their main characteristics. The first algorithm is based on a univariate representation of overall economic activity, the second on its ultivariate representation; ultimately, we apply the algorithms to the data of the French economy between 1970 and 2010. Chapter 3 builds on our results for cyclical dating to predict French recessions since 1974. Using probit models, we illustrate the role of monetary and financial variables as leading indicators of French business cycle fluctuations. In addition, we show that our models accurately detect recessions for a forecasting lag of two-quarters. Chapter 4 extends the entire analysis to several member states of the euro zone, with observations beginning in 1979. We first construct a chronology of their classical cycles, and then we propose an analysis of their main characteristics and their degree of synchronization.Finally, based on financial and monetary indicators in the context of a dynamic probit with fixed effects, we can anticipate the recessionary episodes which occurred in these economies with a horizon of two quarters

Abstract:

Intersections often experience severe rutting in the asphalt concrete layers due to slow moving, high loads, acceleration, deceleration and turning. This thesis aims to investigate the effectiveness of grouted macadam, open graded asphalt with its voids filled with cement grout, as a pavement material at intersections. This was done by investigating the properties of grouted macadam through a literature review and performing a life-cycle cost analysis comparing grouted macadam and asphalt concrete as pavement materials at an intersection. Grouted macadam is found to be similar to asphalt concrete concerning the relation between stiffness and temperature and frequency as well as fatigue behaviour. The main differences are that grouted macadam is stiffer, stronger and not prone to rutting. Thus it would be suitable to address rutting problems. The main drawbacks are that construction demands extra time and precision and that it is expensive compared to asphalt concrete. The life-cycle cost analysis showed that assuming that the grouted macadam has a service life of twenty years and rehabilitation of the asphalt concrete in the form of mill and refill takes place every fourth year the life-cycle costs are approximately the same. A sensitivity analysis was performed that showed that local variations can have large impact on the life-cycle costs. The main conclusion is that grouted macadam can be effective as a pavement material at intersections that experiences severe rutting and frequently reoccurring rehabilitations.

Abstract:

Afin de mieux comprendre les interactions entre Plasmopara halstedii et le tournesol, nous nous sommes intéressés à la variabilité du pouvoir pathogène du parasite. Sur une population locale de P. halstedii obtenue sous des conditions naturelles renforcées d'infection et sous différentes pressions de sélection appliquées durant 5 années consécutives, nous avons analysé les liens existants entre l'apparition de nouvelles virulences et l'agressivité d'une part, la variabilité de l'agressivité de populations de la race 710 multipliées sous les différentes méthodes de gestion de gènes Pl, d'autre part. Deux méthodes ont été développées au cours de notre travail : * la première pour obtenir des isolats mono zoosporanges afin d'étudier la variabilité intra et interpathotype, * la deuxième pour mesurer l'agressivité. Quatre critères de l'agressivité : le taux de réussite de l'infection, la durée de latence, la densité de sporulation et la diminution de taille de l'hypocotyle, ont été analysés sur trois génotypes du tournesol présentant différents niveaux de résistance quantitative. La durée de latence et la densité de sporulation classent les souches en deux groupes selon leur agressivité. Cependant, le taux de réussite de l'infection et la réduction de longueur de l'hypocotyle jouent également un rôle important dans l'estimation de l'agressivité des souches. La capacité de P. halstedii à surmonter des nouveaux gènes " Pl " de la résistance race-spécifique chez le tournesol (apparition de nouvelles virulences) est associée à une agressivité plus élevée. Nos résultats suggèrent l'existence d'un impact du mode de gestion des gènes Pl sur l'évolution de l'agressivité. En effet, seules les stratégies qui maintiennent des effectifs de plantes malades assez élevés favorisent une évolution de l'agressivité de P. halstedii. Donc, les données acquises sur l'évolution du pouvoir pathogène chez P. halstedii suggèrent que la durabilité de la résistance verticale ne serait jamais satisfaisante quel que soit son mode de gestion. Il apparaît très important de mettre en place rapidement des méthodes de lutte intégrées impliquant la résistance quantitative.

Abstract:

The UK domestic building sector accounts for a substantial amount of the final energy demand and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. To this extent, the sector can play an important role in GHG abatement and energy demand reduction, essential objectives of a more ‘sustainable energy system’. Microgeneration, or production of electricity or heat from small-scale sources, have been advocated by some, including the Supergen ‘Highly Distributed Power Systems Consortium’ to which this thesis contributes, as important means towards achieving these objectives. In this thesis, three assessed microgenerators; specifically a 600W microwind system, 2.1 kWp photovoltaic (PV) and building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems, and a 2.8m2 solar hot water (SHW) system have been analysed through an ‘integrated appraisal toolkit’ in order to assess their respective economic and financial performance in current UK context. A cost-benefit analysis (CBA) is applied, based on outputs and results from energy analysis and life-cycle assessment (LCA), and other tools such as financial appraisal, cost-effective analysis (CEA), and simple multi-attribute ranking technique (SMART) are also performed in order to asses how these systems perform on an individual household level or when compared to other energy technologies. The CBA, which included environmental impacts quantified through the LCA, obtained negative net present values (NPVs) for all the assessed microgenerators with the exception of microwind in a high-wind resourced ‘open’ area with lower end capital costs. The NPVs in the financial appraisal, which excluded environmental impacts, yielded relatively poorer results still. Only with the proposed feed-in tariffs would the systems all achieve positive NPVs. Given that the CBA included a substantial qualitative part, alternative tools, such as CEA and multi-criteria evaluation were applied (in brief) in order to place the assessed systems in the context of other energy generating sources in the UK, and to enable a more confident decision with respect to whether these systems should be advocated or rejected.

Abstract:

The deterioration of highway bridges and structures and the cost of repairing, rehabilitating, or replacing deteriorated structures is a major issue for bridge owners. An aging infrastructure as well as the need to upgrade structural capacity for heavier trucks adds to problem. Life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA) is a useful tool for determining when the deployment of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite components is an economically viable alternative for rehabilitating deteriorated concrete bridges. The use of LCCA in bridge design and rehabilitation has been limited. The use of LCCA for bridges on a project level basis has often been limited to the non-routine design of major bridges where the life-cycle cost model is customized. LCCA has historically been deterministic. The deterministic analysis uses discrete values for inputs and is fairly simple and easy to do. It does not give any indication of risk, i.e. the probability that the input values used in the analysis and the resulting life-cycle cost will actually occur. Probabilistic analysis accounts for uncertainty and variability in input variables. It requires more effort than a deterministic analysis because probability distribution functions are required, random sampling is used, and a large number of iterations of the life-cycle cost calculations are carried out. The data needed is often not available. The significance of this study lies in its identification of the parameters that had the most influence on life-cycle costs of concrete bridge and how those parameters interacted. The parameters are: (1) Time to construct the new bridge; (2) traffic volume under bridge (when applicable); (3) value of time for cars; and (4) delay time under the bridge during new bridge construction (when applicable). Using these parameters the analyst can now “simulate” a probabilistic analysis by using the deterministic approach and reducing the number of iterations. This study also extended the use of LCCA to bridge rehabilitations and to bridges with low traffic volumes. A large number of bridges in the United States have low traffic volumes. For the highway bridge considered in the parametric study, rehabilitation using FRP had a lower life-cycle cost when compared to the new bridge alternative.

Abstract:

Increasing demands, shrinking financial and human resources, and increased infrastructure deterioration have made the task of maintaining the infrastructure systems more challenging than ever before. Life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA) is an important tool for transportation infrastructure management, which is used extensively to support project level decisions, and is increasingly being applied to enhance network level analysis. However, traditional LCCA tools cannot practically and effectively utilize expert knowledge and handle ambiguous uncertainties. The main objective of this dissertation was to develop enhanced LCCA models using soft computing (mainly fuzzy logic) techniques. The proposed models use available "real-world" information to forecast life-cycle costs of competing maintenance and rehabilitation strategies and support infrastructure management decisions. A critical review of available soft computing techniques and their applications in infrastructure management suggested that these techniques provide appealing alternatives for supporting many of the infrastructure management functions. In particular, LCCA often utilizes information that is uncertain, ambiguous and incomplete, which is obtained from both existing databases and expert opinion. Consequently, fuzzy logic techniques were selected to enhance life-cycle cost analysis of transportation infrastructure investments because they provide a formal approach for the effective treatment of these types of information. The dissertation first proposes a fuzzy-logic-based decision-support model, whose inference rules can be customized according to agency's management policies and expert opinion. The feasibility and practicality of the proposed model is illustrated by its implementation in a life-cycle cost analysis algorithm for comparing and selecting pavement maintenance, rehabilitation and reconstruction (MR&R) policies. To enhance the traditional probabilistic LCCA model, the fuzzy-logic-based model is then incorporated into the risk analysis process. A fuzzy logic approach for determining the timing of pavement MR&R treatments in a probabilistic LCCA model for selecting pavement MR&R strategies is proposed. The proposed approach uses performance curves and fuzzy-logic triggering models to determine the most effective timing of pavement MR&R activities. The application of the approach in a case study demonstrates that the fuzzy-logic-based risk analysis model for LCCA can effectively produce results that are at least comparable to those of the benchmark methods while effectively considering some of the ambiguous uncertainty inherent to the process. Finally, the research establishes a systematic method to calibrate the fuzzy-logic based rehabilitation decision model using real cases extracted from the Long Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) database. By reinterpreting the model in the form of a neuro-fuzzy system, the calibration algorithm takes advantage of the learning capabilities of artificial neural networks for tuning the fuzzy membership functions and rules. The practicality of the method is demonstrated by successfully tuning the treatment selection model to distinguish between rehabilitation (light overlay) and do-nothing cases. Ph. D.

Public buildings and other public facilities are essential for the functioning and quality of life in modern societies, but they also frequently have a significant negative impact on the natural environment. Public agencies, with their large portfolios of facilities, have faced considerable challenges in recent years in minimizing their negative environmental impacts and energy consumption and coping with shortages of financial capital to invest in new facilities and operate and maintain existing ones, while still meeting their mission goals. These range from the need to provide a quality workplace for their staff to providing a public service and long term benefits to the public. The concept of green building has emerged as a set of objectives and practices designed to reduce negative environment impacts and other challenges while enhancing the functionality of built facilities. However, the prevailing belief related to implementing green building is that incorporating Green Building Strategies and Technologies (GBSTs) increases the initial cost of constructing a facility while potentially reducing its life cycle costs. Thus, this research deals with optimizing the design of individual facilities to balance the initial cost investment for GBSTs versus their potential Life Cycle Cost (LCC) savings without the need to conduct detailed life cycle cost analysis during the early capital planning and budget phases in public sector projects. The purpose of this study is to develop an approach for modeling the general relationship between investments in initial costs versus savings in LCCs involved in implementing green building strategies in public capital projects. To address the research question, this study developed multiple regression models to identify the relationships between GBSTs and their initial cost premiums, operating costs, and LCCs. The multiple regression models include dummy variables because this is a convenient way of applying a single regression equation to represent several nominal variables, which here consist of initial, operating, maintenance, and repair and replacement costs, and ordinal variables, which in this case are the GBST alternatives considered. These new regression models can be used to identify the relationship between GBST alternatives, initial cost premiums, annual operating costs and LCC in the earliest stage of a project, when public agencies are at the capital planning and budgeting stages of facility development, without necessarily needing to know the precise details of design and implementation for a particular building. In addition, this study also proposes and tests a method to generate all the necessary cost data based on building performance models and industry accepted standard cost data. This statistical approach can easily be extended to accommodate additional GBSTs that were not included in this study to identify the relationship between their initial cost premium and their potential LCC saving at the earliest stage of facility development. In addition, this approach will be a useful tool for other institutional facility owners who manage large facility portfolios with significant annual facility investments and over time should help them minimize the environmental impacts caused by their facilities. Abstract:

The main purpose of this thesis is to develop a new model which helps the decision maker to rationalize outsourcing decisions based on Life Cycle Cost (LCC) analysis and select the appropriate supplier. The model developed consists of four main phases, as well as a pre-evaluating step, which investigate the organization needs and circumstances. Phase I is an evaluation and calculation phase, it assess whether outsourcing is the right policy to be adopted as a competitive advantage from two perspectives; the strategic evaluation of the outsourcing decision, and the cost savings through the life time of the outsourcing process using LCC. Phase II is supplier's selection; it aims to select the preferred supplier using Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM), as well as identifies performance measures to monitor supplier performance. Phase III is maintain and monitor phase, it aims to keep the process and the supplier under continuous revision and assessment. Phase IV is review phase, it aims to identify if a specified monitored parameter is out of control or at critical levels, and identify the causes. This model contribute in covering the lack in the literature by considering LCC in the outsourcing decision making, as well as providing a structured model that concern about the whole process starting by understanding the organizations need and ends by monitoring and review the outsourcing process.The model was validated at one Swedish company, i.e. Kalmar Industries in Ljungby assembly unit, in particular, within the maintenance department. The results of the model validation shows that using LCCA, and risk benefits associated, the preferred alternative is to outsource all the maintenance activities related to ventilation system, these activates involve maintenance personnel, spare parts, and third party to monitor and report the process to authorities. Furthermore, based on LCCA and other suggested criteria and using MCDM, ABB Supplier got the lowest score in MCDM i.e. 36.70% (the lowest LCC along with fulfillment of the qualitative criteria).The main result is that; it is possible to employ LCCA in the maintenance outsourcing process to achieve a strategic model valid for decisions taking over the life length of the process. Consequently, the main recommendation for the case company is to outsource these activities and to transfer it to ABB service supplier.
