Abstract:
Background: Competitive forces influence social marketing efforts. Indeed, social marketers often find themselves “shadow boxing” various forms of competition throughout their interventions. Despite the seminal role of competition as a threat to social marketing intervention efficacy, few empirical studies have undertaken competitive analysis or compared the usefulness of competitive typologies. Thus, this paper proposes an index approach to categorize competitive typologies relevant to a specific social marketing intervention in terms of their ease of use, intuitiveness and generalisability to the broader social cause domain. The proposed index approach is illustrated with empirical data, undertaking a competitive analysis of forces obstructing efforts to address educational inequality in Australia, then comparing the ease of use, intuitiveness and generalisability of 15 competitive typologies noted in the social marketing literature to produce a competitor analysis index. Research Question: Which competitive typologies most effectively frame forces that inhibit educational equality social marketing efforts in Australia? Methods: Via interviews and focus groups, qualitative data were collected from 46 students from low socioeconomic status (LSES) backgrounds at six universities and sought to understand the influence of their home residence’s geographical remoteness on their university participation. The analysis revealed eight participant-identified differential competitors experienced by students from regional, rural and remote settings (LSES-R, n = 25, 54.4%) that were not experienced by those from metropolitan areas (LSES-M, n = 21, 45.6%). Fifteen competitive typologies were identified in the social marketing literature, and their capacity to frame these eight differential forces in terms of their ease of use, intuitiveness and generalisability was critiqued. Findings: Unlike their metropolitan counterparts, LSES-R participants experienced situational (n = 3), dispositional (n = 3) and goal pursuit (n = 2) competitive forces. The most effective competition typologies comprised two classification options that were distinctly different and could classify both the unfriendly and friendly competition that exists in social marketing. Five competitor typologies were identified as easy to use, intuitive and generalizable to the broader educational inequality domain. Together, these five competitor typologies form a competitor analysis index for educational inequality researchers and practitioners to enhance their intervention efficacy. Recommendations: Despite widespread agreement as to the importance of competitor analysis in social marketing, the efficacy of various typologies has received little attention. Social marketers are encouraged to critique competitor typologies before selecting those which enable effective decision-making. Furthermore, it is recommended that social marketers use a competitor analysis index comprised of multiple typologies to better capture the nebulous nature of the many different types of competitors that exist in a specific social marketing context. Limitations: The educational inequalities cause and qualitative method may constrain generalisability, but they exemplify the importance of competition typology choice and model how competitor analysis indexes can be developed.

This study examines the influence of horizontal competition on interorganizational exchange. Interorganizational competition is a multidimensional construct that can influence exchange in multiple, sometimes countervailing ways. With an analysis of Major League Baseball player trades, we examine the influences of three components of competition—goal conflict, rivalry, and competitive interaction—on interorganizational exchange partner selection. We find that goal conflict reduces the hazard rate of exchange between organizations, but competitive interaction increases it. Moreover, we find evidence that prior exchange moderates the competition–exchange relationship by reducing the perceived risks and information benefits of exchange with a competitor. We do not find evidence that interorganizational rivalry shapes subsequent exchange behavior.

Purpose The credit card business has been one of the key businesses for banks in Taiwan. The purpose of this paper is to use competitive dynamics and structured context analysis (SCA) to explore the competition relationships among market, resources, and strategies concerning the credit card issued banks in Taiwan. Design/methodology/approach The market commonality and resource similarity analysis of competitive dynamics in the first stage obtained the competitive mapping of four major credit card issue banks, as well as the differences of competition strategy. In the second stage, 1,968 pieces of data on credit card news from 2013 to 2014 were collected. SCA was used to analyze the competitive action, competitive response, number of responses, response lag, and response order. Findings The competitor mapping and four hypothesis obtained from competitive dynamics correspond to the credit card competition strategy, as obtained from SCA. Originality/value This research combined competitive dynamics and SCA to analyze the credit cards market in Taiwan. The research model could be used in the other financial market.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of inter-platform competition on the adoption of different broadband technologies (i.e. among xDSL, fibre-optic technologies, and hybrid fibre coaxial (HFC)), examine the direction of the effect, and identify potential technology convergence and the speed of technology innovation. Design/methodology/approach – It uses Lotka-Volterra equation to determine the dynamic competition pattern for xDSL, fibre-optic technologies, and HFC. Findings – The influence of inter-platform competition on the adoption rate may vary depending on the market conditions, the phase of the adoption period, and the types of competing technology. Even though new technology has competitive advantage, it still requires time to acquire market share. Even though fibre-optic is leading in the market, alternative technologies have also garnered significant market share in the early stage. Specifically, HFC has gained its own market position, making it a valuable alternative in the short term. Nonetheless, the market will eventually converge to fibre-optics. Originality/value – The findings show that inter-platform competition does not always exert positive influence on broadband adoption as indicated in previous literature. Instead, the influence may vary from negative to neural. This information is an important knowledge addition to the literature. Overall, the study has important implications to governmental effort in managing market competitions and in planning national broadband infrastructure policies. It also provides valuable implications on how ISPs should strategize their investment in new broadband technologies.

Competition with weeds decreases crop yields globally. Breeding for competitive ability against elevated weed pressure can be difficult because the selection for specific traits which contribute to competitive ability may result in yield losses. The widely studied International Triticeae Mapping Initiative (ITMI) population was used to study the genetics of traits associated with competitive ability in a high latitude (52-53ºN) wheat-growing environment in central Alberta, Canada. Grain yield without weed competition and under experimentally sown cultivated oat competition exhibited similar heritability. Grain yield was positively correlated with early season vigour, and negatively correlated with days to maturity in the competitive treatment only. In this study, similar heritability estimates between competition treatments suggest that selection in a weed free environment can lead to improvements in a weedy environment, but some high-yielding lines under competition would be eliminated during selection.Key words: Wheat, weed competition, competitive ability, International Triticeae Mapping Initiative, genetic correlation

Purpose – This paper aims to present a broader industry-level competitive analysis of a contact lens market. Design/methodology/approach – Porter’s Five Forces model can be used for a broader and rigorous competitive analysis of a contact lens market to determine the competitive intensity and to form a well-rounded business strategy. Findings – The contact lens market is highly competitive and unattractive. Because growth has been stagnant, traditional competition has become more intense to steal share from each other. However, the competition in the market could not be defined narrowly between traditional competition but is broad with substitutes, and bargaining power of customers and distributors. A contact lens manufacturer has to look beyond the traditional competition to not only compete with traditional competitors within the industry but also with substitutes, and bargaining power of customers and distributors. Practical implications – This paper will benefit contact lens manufacturers/businesses in forming a well-rounded business strategy.

Four years of field experiments were used to assess the competitive ability of red rice, a weedy variety of rice, and ‘Mars’, a cultivar of rice. Red rice was the dominant competitor each of the 4 yr, and an average of one red rice plant reduced Mars grain yield per plant equal to the effect of four Mars plants. Intervarietal competition was more important than intravarietal competition for Mars, whereas the reverse was true for red rice. The product of the coefficients for intravarietal competition did not significantly exceed the product of the coefficients for intervarietal competition, indicating that the two varieties were competing for the same resources. Using the reciprocal yield model coefficients from 1989, grain yield losses of Mars, due to red rice densities of 4, 16, 25, and 300 plants m−2, were predicted to approximate 13, 37, 48, and 92%, respectively, at a fixed cultivar density of 100 plants m−2.

Purpose: School choice policies are expected to generate competition leading to improvement in school practices. However, little is known about how competition operates in public education—particularly in charter schools. This paper examines charter-school leaders’ competitive perception formation and the actions taken in response to competition. Research Methods: Using Arizona charter-school leaders’ responses to an original survey, Arizona Department of Education data, and the Common Core of Data, we examined the factors predicting the labeling of a school as a competitor. We estimated fixed effects logistic regression models which examine factors predicting the labeling of competitor schools and of top competitors. We used logistic regression models to understand charter-school leaders’ responses to competition. Findings: We find charter-school leaders in Arizona perceived at least some competition with other schools, and their perceptions vary by urbanicity. While distance between schools mattered generally for labeling a school as a competitor, distance did not factor into labeling “top competitor” schools. Student outcomes did not predict competition between schools, but student demographics were associated with labeling a school a competitor. Charter-school leaders responded to competition through changes in outreach and advertising rather than curriculum and instruction. Competitive responses were related to the respondent school’s quality and the level of perceived competition. Implications for Research and Practice: We found charter-school leaders perceive competition and respond by changing school practices. Responses typically focus on marketing activities over productive responses. The novel state-level analysis allows us to test the effects of local market conditions typically absent in the literature.

AbstractAn analysis of over 4000 wines entered in 13 U.S. wine competitions shows little concordance among the venues in awarding Gold medals. Of the 2,440 wines entered in more than three competitions, 47 percent received Gold medals, but 84 percent of these same wines also received no award in another competition. Thus, many wines that are viewed as extraordinarily good at some competitions are viewed as below average at others. An analysis of the number of Gold medals received in multiple competitions indicates that the probability of winning a Gold medal at one competition is stochastically independent of the probability of receiving a Gold at another competition, indicating that winning a Gold medal is greatly influenced by chance alone. Abstract:
O crucifixo é um elemento chave na prova das argolas na Ginástica Artística Masculina. A posição anatômica durante a sua execução requer a abdução do ombro em 90° no plano frontal, o que provoca grande solicitação mecânica nas articulações do ombro. Em condição de treino, um aparelho modificado é mundialmente utilizado para diminuir as cargas no ombro e permitir maior numero de repetições do crucifixo. Estudos sugerem que há diferenças na ativação muscular no ombro entre a situação de treino e competição. Entretanto, ainda não há conhecimento sobre a especificidade dos aparelhos de treino no âmbito da biomecânica, considerando a cinemática, cinética e eletromiografia em bases individuais. O objetivo geral desta tese projeto é investigar a biomecânica do crucifixo com o uso das argolas de competição e de treinamento. Doze ginastas brasileiros de alto nível foram testados em dinamômetro isocinético para verificação de assimetria na força de ombros e eletromiografia. Após intervalo de uma semana, os participantes realizaram, em seus ginásios de treinamento, três crucifixos nas argolas de competição e no aparelho de treino em ordem aleatória. Foi utilizada uma câmera de vídeo digital, uma célula de carga acoplada em cada cabo das argolas e eletromiografia de superfície em nove músculos do membro superior. Os resultados foram comparados por testes paramétricos, não paramétricos e estatística descritiva. A assimetria nas forças de ombro foi de 9,9±6,4%. Os ângulos do ombro no aparelho de treino tiveram menor desvio da posição alvo com 90° de abdução do que nas argolas para o ombro direito e esquerdo, e menores valores de simetria. As forças nos cabos foram semelhantes em ambos os aparelhos, como também a simetria. Não houve diferença na eletromiografia de nove músculos e valores de co-contração entre os dois aparelhos. As argolas de treino permitiram aos ginastas um melhor desempenho do crucifixo sem alterar o padrão de ativação muscular do ombro das argolas de competição. A orientação individualizada é necessária para que os ginastas realizem o crucifixo no aparelho de treino da mesma maneira que realizam nas argolas de competição, para que as equivalentes características biomecânicas sejam mantidas<br>The cross is a key element in Male Artistic Gymnastics rings routines. The anatomical position during its execution requires 90° of shoulder abduction in frontal plane, which implies a large mechanical demand of shoulder joints. For training condition, a modified rings apparatus is worldwide used to decrease shoulder load and allow more repetitions of cross. Studies suggest that there is different shoulder muscle activation between training and competition conditions. However, is not clear the training apparatuses specificity regarding biomechanics, considering kinematics, kinetics and electromyography in an individual basis. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the biomechanics of the cross using training and competition rings devices. Twelve Brazilian elite gymnasts were tested on isokinetic dynamometer for shoulder strength asymmetry and electromyography assessment. Within one week interval, participants performed in their training place, three crosses in rings and in training apparatus randomly. One digital video camera, one strain gauge in each cable and surface electromyography of nine shoulder muscles were used. Statistical analyses were performed by parametric and non-parametric tests and descriptive statistics. Shoulder strength asymmetry RMS values were 9.9±6.4%. The asymmetry of shoulder strength and cross performance on rings had an individual basis relation. Shoulder angles on training device had less deviation from target 90° of abduction on training apparatus than on rings and smaller asymmetry value. Cable forces had similar values in both apparatuses, as the asymmetry values. Electromyography of nine muscles and co contraction values differences were not different between the types of rings. The training rings allowed the gymnasts to better perform the cross without changing shoulder muscle activation patterns. An individual orientation for gymnasts to perform the cross on training apparatus within the same way they perform in competition rings, it is necessary for the maintenance of equivalent biomechanical characteristics

Abstract:
<p>The Swedish food retail market contains of three major actors, ICA, KF and Axfood, all in all dominating 75 percent of the total market shares. The scant number of retailing actors indicates that the Swedish food retail market is a highly concentrated oligopoly, which as a fact has given rise to definite discussions and argumentations concerning the market situation. But is the food retail market imperfect and how do we reach a workable competition? Economic theory does not provide any clear answer on these questions, but is rather divided into two fundamentally different approaches to define competition: the static and the dynamic perspective on competition. </p><p>In an attempt to examine the competition on local Swedish retail markets, the purpose of this study is to carry out an econometric model estimating the situation. The model serves to explain the variation of ICA’s achievements measured in terms of turnovers obtained in the company. The explanatory variables composing the model are divided into three separate groupings: degreeof market concentration, storespecific factors and region-specific factors. Furthermore, in order to find out which one of the competitive explanations best fits the reality, the regression results are interpreted from a static and a dynamic perspective of competition. In part, we also aim to compare the results with the outline of the Swedish competition law. </p><p>We found that the level of concentration obtained in our material is high and is steadily increasing. We also found that stores do not, in any great extent, use price, service and quality as competitive methods. Thus, to gain competitive advantage, market actors must find other ways to carry out strategic market activities. The region-specific variables had either none or very little influence on ICA’s turnover. According to these findings, neither the static nor the dynamic perspective of competition is solely able to produce an accurate method for reaching a state of a workable competition. Instead, a combination of the static and the dynamic ideas may be regarded as the most advantageous way to generate suitable conditions for competition to be efficient. Therefore, in order to promote workable competition, the Swedish competition law must consist of a balance between the static and the dynamic view of competition.</p>

Due to the complex and close interaction of banks with other economic units, any trouble in banking sector might have repercussion on the whole economy which makes the market structure and competition in banking sector as a cynosure. Business world is facing gradually increasing competition. It seems that the existence of firms depends on the power and the advantage of their competitiveness. The purpose of this study is to analyze the competition structure and the market conditions of Turkish banking system. despite the existence of a number of studies about competition in banking sector, there is still a lack of the studies which has been done with Lerner's Index. Due to this fact, Lerner’s Indeks is used in this study. Bank level determinants of Lerner Index is analysed using Panel Data Regression Method and was reached to factors effecting competitive behavior in Turkish Banking Sector.
