MacEacheron, Melanie, and Lorne Campbell. Moderation of Female–Female Competition for Matings by Competitors’ Age and Parity. Edited by Maryanne L. Fisher. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199376377.013.27.

Full text
Abstract:
Previous research on female intrasexual competition, especially but not only for matings or mateships, has largely been conducted using convenience samples of women of undergraduate status and therefore generally between the ages of 17 and 22. Even among such articles including women over 25, the majority do not focus on mate competition. There is a priori reason, however, to believe that intrasexual competition for matings and mateships would extend and change beyond this life stage. This chapter provides an overview of the literature on female intrasexual competition over women’s reproductive careers, discusses factors that should result in predictable changes in female intrasexual competition as women age, and proposes testable hypotheses that should help guide future research in this area of research. Based on this analysis, new theories concerning reproductive advantage derivable from acquiring the status of successful mother are proposed.

Goodhart, Michael. The Bifocal Approach. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190692421.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter argues that conceptualizing justice claims as ideological claims facilitates the reconciliation and integration of realistic and normative analysis within a single framework. It proposes a bifocal approach that combines an analytical and a “partisan” lens within a single theoretical apparatus, providing a more comprehensive understanding of injustice than its competitors by integrating two crucial functions of political theory: the analysis and critique of ideologies and substantive normative critique and political prescription. This approach depends on a conception of political normativity as hypothetical rather than categorical; the chapter defends this conception of normativity as theoretically plausible, motivationally adequate, and crucially enabling for theorizing justice and injustice.

Full text
Abstract:
Competition law generally requires competitors who agree on restraints of trade to justify their agreements as procompetitive when market forces create the potential for consumer exploitation. This analysis, known as the Rule of Reason (from its common law origins), does not apply to internal agreements within a single firm. The U.S. Supreme Court has characterized sports league policies as agreements among club owners who control the league, rather than unilateral decisions of a single entity. Opponents of the application of the Rule of Reason continue to seek doctrinal shields against judicial review of anticompetitive sports rules, and this chapter explains why such an approach is unsound competition policy.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter deals with three different trade wars at the end of the nineteenth century: (1) within Royal for control of the company; (2) between Royal and companies that used different formulas; and (3) among three companies that used cream of tartar, including Dr. Price. All the companies claimed that their competitors’ products were toxic and that they were perpetrating frauds on consumers. The last war was resolved by combining the three companies into the Royal trust, capitalized at $20 million, as part of the Great Merger Movement. There is also an analysis of cookbooks showing African-American and Hispanic use of baking powder.
