Abstract:

Abstract:
Many management system engineering ideas and theories have evolved to help businesses grow and achieve their goals. Applying these ideas and theories to a business system is a strategic planning issue and results in a bewildering array of strategic alternatives for business system improvement. Choosing the appropriate alternatives is a complex and difficult decision. The most appropriate strategic alternative must be executable. To be executable the strategic alternative must not only be technically feasible, but must also overcome social and cultural obstructions. This research presents a planning approach to select the most appropriate strategic alternative and to plan its implementation. The planning approach is built on a planning framework synthesized from previous research. This framework involves the following planning functions: 1. Determine business strategic alternatives 2. Acquire business knowledge 3. Shape business for strategic advantage 4. Implement plan - operational engagement The planning approach uses Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), Project Management Tools (PMT) and Design Structure Matrix (DSM) to implement these functions and plan business improvements. This research demonstrates that rational hierarchies appropriate for strategic alternatives analysis using AHP can be constructed. Business scenarios are used to show that AHP method prioritizes alternative strategies differently under different business circumstances. In addition, the data generated by the AHP can be aggregated into statements of work and input into DSM to generate a project plan to implement organizational design changes and achieve strategic intent.

Abstract:

This praxis explores a new approach to the problem of estimating the uncertainty attributable to inconsistent pairwise comparison judgments in the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), a prominent decision-making methodology used in numerous fields, including systems engineering and engineering management. Based on insights from measurement theory and established error propagation equations, the work develops techniques to estimate the uncertainty of aggregated priorities for decision alternatives based on measures of inconsistency for component pairwise comparison matrices. This research develops two formulations for estimating the error: the first, more computationally intensive and accurate, uses detailed calculations of parameter errors to estimate the aggregated uncertainty, while the second, significantly simpler, uses an estimate of mean relative error (MRE) for each pairwise comparison matrix to estimate the aggregated error. This paper describes the derivation of both formulations for the linear weighted sum method of priority aggregation in AHP and uses Monte Carlo simulation to test their estimation accuracies for diverse problem structures and parameter values. The work focuses on the two most commonly used methods of deriving priority weights in AHP: the eigenvector method (EVM) and the geometric mean method (GMM). However, the approach of estimating the propagation of measurement errors can be readily applied to other hierarchical decision support methodologies that use pairwise comparison matrices. The developed techniques provide analysts the ability to easily assess decision model uncertainties attributable to comparative judgment inconsistencies without recourse to more complex optimization routines or simulation experiments described previously in the professional literature.

Abstract:
For the last decades, numerous researchers have studied housing preferences of populations. However, very few researchers put highlight on young adults in Sweden and their housing preference. From a Swedish perspective, it is worthwhile to investigate housing preferences of young adults as the populationof young adults is consistently growing and their roles as dynamic consumers are crucial in the housing market. This thesis aims to examine housing preference of young adults aged 18 to 30 in largest cities in Sweden by comparison to older age groups. By identifying housing attributes highly valuedby the young adults, the research shall provide guideline to practitioners withfuture housing development to attract the young generation. The research is a quantitative study with application of a survey method. Analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method forms a foundation of thequestionnaire design, enabling to observe young adults’ trade-off decisionsamong multiple housing attributes. Total 767 responses are collected and the responses with valid consistency ratio (CR) are selectively used in the analysis. The result demonstrates that young adults have high preference for ‘low price’,‘proximity to public transportation’, ‘balcony’, ‘feeling of safety’ and ‘proximity to work or school’ in a housing decision. On the contrary, they show little interest in ‘neighborhood environment’ and ‘sustainable aspects’ of an apartment in general. In comparison with older age groups, young adults have higher preference for the proximity of an apartment and having a dishwasher;yet their preferences for ‘cleanliness’, ‘green space’ and ‘separate kitchen’ of adwelling are lower than the older generation. The practitioners shall keep these findings in mind when planning and designing apartments for the young consumers.

Abstract:
Among several techniques for disposition and treatment of urban solid waste, sanitary landfill is the most employed, by their low cost and relative operational simplicity. However, the lack of research for suitable areas is one of the main problems to the application of this technique. It is necessary to know the attributes of the environment to assess their numerous interactions with the environment sanitary landfill. This interactions and the variety of the attributes becomes diffilcut the selection of the most suitable area to the installation of the sanitary landfill. A methodology to be effiecient in the selection of the best site to this facility, must consider the interactions and the attributes of the environment. This paper proposes a methodology which consider 14 attributes of the environment related to the rocky substrate, unconsolidated materials, water and relief. Because the variety of attributes, multiple possible alternatives and competing objectives to be consider was applied a decision support system (D.S.S.) technical named analytic hierachy process (AHP) which divides a complex problem in simpler ones in the form of a decision hierarchy. The use of AHP reaches the numerical suitability index (SI), of the areas to the installation of a sanitary landfill and becomes possible to hierarchy these areas. This methodology was applied in an area located in the Araraquara region, São Paulo state, limited by the parallels 21º45\' and 22º15\' south and meridians 48º00\' and 48º15\' West gr. The use of the suitability index (SI) permitted the zoning and ranking of the sub-areas and their classification in favorable, moderate, severe and restrictive to the installation of a sanitary landfill. The methodology to compare the 14 attributes in a numerical way by the use of the making decision technique applied to the AHP. By this way had the advantage of less subjectivity of the process of area selection and to weigh inter-dependents attributes, addressed to the objective of to select sites to the sanitary landfill.

Abstract:
In recent years, cobalt coating has been known as an alternative material instead of chromium in corrosion and erosion resistant behavior. Extensive research has been carried out on a variety of electroplated cobalt coatings. In this study, for the first time, the relative priority of the cobalt coating has been calculated and ranked theoretically by the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). For this purpose, through the AHP and the Expert Choice software, benefiting from expert opinions, the relative weights of the effective parameters on achieving nanostructure coating have been calculated. Then, by using the weights obtained, the relative priority of five available Co coatings was calculated and the quality of them was ranked. Among available Co coatings, the coating with 5 mA/ current density, pH 3, electrolyte saccharin of 0.25 grams per liter and a temperature of 45 °C during 30 minutes, in comparing with others had more favorable conditions for achieving nano-grain size. This shows that before experimental tests, the best alternatives to achieve the ultimate goal could be anticipated. This anticipation leads to reduce in trial and error and the multiplicity of the tests in investigations. Abstract:

Making a decision today is quite important, especially in companies, where the consequences can bring benefits or costs. Sometimes the decisions to be made are complex and we need to evaluate many criterions that can involve several factors. In those cases, it is not easy to have a good overview of all choices and for this reason it is important to have a system that helps us in making complex decisions, when it is not possible to evaluate all the alternatives manually. This thesis describes different algorithms and tools that can aid in the process of making decisions. Based on the review of existing tools a new web based application is proposed. The new tool, Decision Maker, uses both the full Analytical Hierarchical Process approach and Chainwise Paired Comparisons method to evaluate different alternatives.

Abstract:
The Spanish housing market has been on the rise since 2014 as property prices are increasing again after the global financial crisis of 2008. This paper aims to both solve an illustrated investment problem using the decision making method AHP, Analytical Hierarchy Process, and to investigate the process of property investment in Spain as an E.U. resident concerning rules and regulations. The investment problem consists of selecting one out of three properties, all town houses with different characteristics, located in different parts of the city Valencia on the Spanish east coast based on the results of a survey done on site in Valencia with a sample of 70 respondents in the ages between 20-29 years.  The factors that influence the decision are based on property valuation; Localization factors, Technical building factors and Economic factors. The Localization factors are further divided into Distance to the city center and Distance to the cost. The Technical building factors in Terrace, Garage and Open-plan kitchen. Lastly the Economic factors only consist of one factor which is Price, the advertised price €/m2.The survey concluded that a property close to the cost is preferred over one close to the city center, 57 % over 43 %. That Terrace is the absolute most important building factor with a priority of 63 %, followed by Garage at 24 % and that Open-plan kitchen is not prioritized with only 13 %. The three main groups were prioritized as follows; Localization factors 41,4 %, Economic factors, i.e. Price, 34,3 %, and Technical building factors 24,3 % - which is consistent with theory on the subject. The results of the survey applied to an AHP hierarchy together with the local priorities from the application of the Saaty-scale and comparison matrices, result in one out of the three properties being ranked as the most efficient. It was concluded that the third property, a townhouse close to the beach, was preferred with a 55 % in global priority, followed by the first property with 26 % and lastly the second with 19 %. The paper also concludes that hiring a third party is something to consider avoiding if one feels comfortable with other contacts as the obligated lawyer, clerk and transaction fees already adds on 10-15% of the purchase price. That the process of only purchasing a property is relatively easy, as technically only N.I.E number is required, but that it requires significantly more to become resident to obtain tax benefits. Lastly the project discusses that with its rising property prices, development opportunities, the warm climate and the mentality of the people Spain certainly can be somewhere worth investing in.

Abstract: The last 30 decades were marked by an intensive poultry production, which reached a satisfactory level of production with the use of technology. These facts have allowed the country to stand out in a global setting, making the country the largest exporter and third largest producer of chicken meat in the world. Currently, projects related to rural equipment developed in Brazil have been studied only by Engineers and technicians, but could be optimized with the participation of Designers. This study aimed to compare three types of feeder for broiler chickens under the standpoint of management and preference of birds, examining the behavioral and duration of birds' meals, and estimate the efficiency of the equipments. The evaluated feeders were: Tubular and Automatic, both currently marketed, and Fênix feeder, manual equipment proposed by a designer who is still undergoing tests. The study was conducted in a shed broiler commercial house that housed 14 thousand birds at a density of 16 birds m-2 at 17, 18, 20, 21, 23 and 24 days old. We used video footage to record the behavior and, based on these results and general knowledge on the subject, an assessment was preceded by the AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process), to estimate the efficiency of each feeder in accordance with three distinct types of consumers: C1 (small producer), C2 (large producer) and C3 (researcher). The results indicate a bird's preference to the Tubular feeder, in which the behavior of "eating" and the time of meal were higher, and this is the only one that did not have a partition grid on the food plate, which may have been determinant to the birds' preference. The Fênix feeder indicated that it was more appropriate to the consumer C1 and Automatic for consumers C2 and C3. The Tubular came in third place for the three consumers, even as the favorite for birds. The Fênix feeder presented compatible characteristics with competitors, been more efficient than the Tubular indicating, after some adjustments the ability to be manufactured

Abstract:
This study describes an experiment about the definition of portfolio of improvement projects in an industry of capital goods, which had until recently been prioritized based mainly on legislation demand and technical complexity. It was proposed to increase the criteria numbers including: market image, market share, strategic alignment, launch time to new products. To handle several criteria with focus quantitative and qualitative aspects was necessary introduced two multcriterial methods, namely, analytical hierarchic process (AHP) and Dempster-Shafer AHP process (DS-AHP). The first referred method is used to manage the relative importance of alternatives regarding the fore mentioned criteria based on weights attributed to structure hierarchical levels. The second referred method also uses AHP platform to enable ignorance measurement based on subjective probabilities. Results from direct application of the methods in this specific industry are commented. It was observed that the decision makers have some objections with respect to the AHP process, in the sense that there were judgment inconsistencies which required additional evaluation of the candidate solutions, what was seen as somewhat tiresome. The main advantages which was emphasize by decision makers refers to the ease of application in corporate environmental . As for the DS - AHP process, the possibility of considering believes in a structured way was felt as more appropriated to the real decision process, which effectively involves uncertainties. In this way, the elected alternative can be clearly understood as most probably - and not certainly - the best. Also the DS-AHP process was seen as more directly conducive to the final results in comparison with the AHP process.

ABSTRACTNowadays the importance of environmental logistics is increasing while organizations are trying to pay more attention to their transport activities. Since PNL is a famous logistics company in Nordic countries and transport activates are done by sub contractors they intend to make sound environmental choices by assessing their suppliers from environmental performance in order to identify the best suppliers which is comply with the PNL environmental policy. In this project the survey study and questionnaire has been made in order to evaluate the supplier performance from environmental perspective. At first the investigation has been made for improving the previous questionnaire which was made by PNL. Some parts were revised according to researchers‟ knowledge, reliable references and suggestion of environmental consultant. Lots of study has been made in order to find the most importing effects that can affect environmentalism. Obtained results from questionnaire were analyzed and appropriate suggestions were given in order to enlighten the significant importance of environmental issues.Due to complexity of decision making environment, the applicable and reliable method should be applied to cope with complexity and the factors that can affect the objective while simplifying the process. Analytical Hierarchy process has been applied for this project in order to change the qualitative situation into quantitative manner to rate the suppliers based on their performance. The first step in AHP process is constructing hierarchy in two or more level for evaluating the alternatives. The goal of the project is environmental performance .Second level is criteria which has been made according to literature and the importance of them while the suggestions of consultant has been applied as well. Third level is sub criteria which are questions of questionnaire and finally the forth level include alternative which is suppliers.Next step in AHP process is weighting criteria and sub criteria and making pair wise comparison between them. Procedure of weighting is done by researchers and managers from PNL in order to decrease the subjectivity of decision making process. The result from suppliers has been investigated and points were given to them according to their performance and ability regarding environmental logistics.Sensitivity analysis was made for analyzing the result from AHP in order to investigate the responsiveness of the result.Key words: Logistics, Environmentalism, AHP Method, Supplier Assessment, Survey Study.

Abstract:
The regulatory framework of basic sanitation in Brazil, establishes very clearly the guidelines that must be followed by these service providers of water and sewage, but when the Federal Constitution delegates to the municipalities the title transfer of these services, it imposes to the local decision makers the choice of management model to be adopted. Each municipality and region own characteristics, with the necessity of weighting of technical, economic and social attributions of each option of management model confers high complexity to the decision process of which management model is best for each municipality, composing a contemporary theme for studies and intense debating by the population. Because of this complexity, the multi-criteria methods of support to the decision serve as helping tools to the decision makers not only in the structuration of these problems with confliction objects but also as support in the prioritizing of the main criteria involved in this process. This study tried to structure the process of decision making about the choice of management model for services of water and sewage with the prioritizing of criteria through the Analytic Hierarchy Process. (AHP). From the information obtained by the SNIS (Sanitation Information National System), nine criteria were established and sent to nine experts for validation of the selection and prioritizing. The results show a clear prioritizing of technical and operational criteria, followed by those associated to the regulation and social control, and, less prioritized, the financial and economic criteria.

Abstract:

There are a number of decision making problems in which Geographical Information System (GIS) has employed to organize and facilitate the procedure of analyzing the problem. These GIS-based decision problems which typically include a number of different criteria and alternatives are generally analyzed by Multicriteria Decision Analysis (MCDA).Different locations within a geographical area represent the alternatives by which the overall goal of the project is achieved. The quality of achieving the goal is evaluated by a set of criteria which should be considered in the work. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) which is a powerful method of MCDA generally can organize spatial problems and decides which alternatives are most suitable for the defined problems. However due to some intrinsic uncertainty in the method, a number of authors suggest fuzzifying the method while others are against fuzzification of the AHP.

The debate over fuzzifying AHP is going on and attempt for finding that was mostly in theory, and little, if any; practical comparison between the AHP and fuzzified AHP has done. This work presents a practical comparison of AHP and fuzzy AHP in a GIS-based problem, case study, for locating a dam in Costa Rica, considering different criteria. In order to perform the AHP and fuzzy AHP in the GIS-based problem and calculating weights of the criteria by the methods, some computer codes have written and developed in MATLAB.

The comparisons between the AHP and fuzzy AHP methods are done on result weights and on the result final maps. The comparison between the weights is repeated on different levels of uncertainty in fuzzy AHP then all the results are compared with the result of AHP method. Also this study for checking the effect of fuzzification on results is suggested Chi-Square test as a suitable tool.

Comparisons between the resulting weights of the AHP and fuzzy AHP methods show some differences between the methods. Furthermore, the Chi-Square test shows that the higher level of uncertainty in the fuzzy AHP, the greater the difference in results between the AHP and fuzzy AHP methods.

Abstract:
The analysis of investment in Advanced Manufacturing Technologies (AMT) is a process of strategic decision, due to the competitive potential that these technologies represent when they provide the companies with a range of tangible and intangible benefits. However, given the complexity of the related variables, the risk and the high cost of the investment; the methods of financial evaluation, used traditionally, are insufficient to capture the innumerous strategic benefits provided by such technologies, which leads, in some cases, to incoherent results and the abandonment of the investment. Herewith, this work presents a model of multicriterial decision to justify the investments in manufacturing technologies. The implementation of the model was accomplished using the AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) method, aiming at considering, together, the tangible and intangible aspects associated with this type of investment. The AHP method was applied through a case study in a supply company of the automobile trade. A framework was proposed for the conduction and diagnosis of the productive scenery in order to investigate the adequacy of a determined AMT to the manufacturing strategy of the company, relating the existent resources and industrial capacities and the requirements of the market. The result of the research proves the generality and the potential of the model as a decision making tool for the process of justifying the investments in manufacturing technologies. The demonstration of the method's applicability contributes academically and professionally to the ones interested in the matter.

Abstract:
The Business Planning Process (BPP), in the context of technology-based firms (TBF), is complex and dynamic. Aims to transform the results of research into a new technology-based firm and guides the search for important information, able to subsidize the creation of these ventures, helping the entrepreneurial team, usually composed of technology entrepreneurs and professional managers to develop business and structure their logistics strategies, financial, organizational, marketing and production. During the unfolding of the activities that make up the BPP, detects the need to define the business model for these start-ups. Therefore, it is attributed to the entrepreneurial team responsibility for this definition. The business model in this case is guided by the decision both on the market positioning as on the definition of the structure of the value chain, and these two decisions simultaneous and interactive. The market positioning refers to choices about the target audience and the differentials of the business, including the structuring of the marketing mix, especially the definition of the product being sold and marketing channels to be explored. The structure of the value chain is guided by the decision to outsource or internalize (make-or-buy decision) given activity. Despite the importance of defining the business model in the case of TBF, few studies are conducted in the country for this purpose. Given the above, the objective of this research is to propose a process to aid decision making, using the method Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) for defining the business model in TBF. The AHP enables to develop a model of the type multicriteria decision. The research, conducted by the methodological strategy of action research and survey, sought to identify the criteria that guide the choices necessary to market positioning and structuring of the value chain of TBFs. As a result, it has been the definition of a process to aid decision making that guides the definition of the business model based on the specific needs of each EBT, consists of six steps: a) analysis of market players, b) identifying positioning opportunities c) prioritization of positioning market with the help of AHP d) mapping of the primary activities relating to this position, e) analysis and identification of dubious activities in relation to the make-or-buy decision and f) application of AHP for this decision. This study sought to provide a theoretical contribution to the fields of knowledge of marketing and operations, to empirically validate a model that considers various relevant criteria for decision-making, in order to guide the development of the business over BPP. Expected to contribute to the Brazilian research centers are able to adequately fulfill this which is one of its most important social functions: to promote the development and business generation technology for the development of society.

Abstract:
The competitiveness of an organization and consequently its prosperity before competitive markets, depends widely on the capacity for innovation and improvement of its products/services and processes. The pursuit for better manufacturing standards and services provided to customers, in addition to the applications of new management techniques, continuous improvement, optimization and decision-making, have attracted attention of organizations. The human creative effort should propose approaches of competitive basis, combining tools and techniques, known or not, in order to improve their performance. Thus, the objective of this thesis was to propose an analytical structure integrating sequentially the process of continuous improvement DMAIC of Six Sigma and the multi-criteria analysis method for decision making Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), in order to apply in real cases in beverage industries. At first, through a literature search, it was proposed a general structure, called Analytical Structure DMAIC/AHP, involving the above theories. In addition, with a case study aid, it was proposed a detailed structure attempting to improve the operation of physical distribution for beverages in a company in the city of Ribeirão Preto. The focus was also on the opportunity to gain greater knowledge of the process under study and improve the foundation for decision making. The application of analytical structure was divided into three phases: phase 1 - definitions for the improvement project; phase 2 - implementation of the improvement process itself; and phase 3 (called metaphase) - responsible for monitoring/following the activities of the project. The application in a real case allowed the proposal of activities and tools for the understanding and improvement of the process, as well as possibilities for more alternatives to problems encountered; provided foundation for decision making at the time of implementing the improvements and presented tools for maintenance and control of changes proposed in the project. An obvious gain from the junction of the theories was that there was a mutual aid between them. Thus, the process of continuous improvement DMAIC, through its detailed stages of knowledge of processes and causes of problems could robustly base the definition of the hierarchical model of AHP, since the overall objective to be attained, passing through the decision criteria, until they get to the alternatives of decisions proposed for the process under study. On the other hand, as the DMAIC does not present an attractive method of decision-making, AHP could assist in multi-criteria decision making more organized, consistent and assertive.

Abstract:
This paper compares two technologies, Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and Virtual Private Network (VPN). PKI and VPN are two approaches currently in use to resolve the problem of securing data in computer networks. Making this comparison difficult is the lack of available data. Additionally, an organization will make their decision based on circumstances unique to their information security needs. Therefore, this paper will illustrate a method using a utility function and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to determine which technology is better under a hypothetical set of circumstances. This paper will explain each technology, establish parameters for a hypothetical comparison, and discuss the capabilities and limitations of both technologies.

Abstract:
Prioritizing software requirements helps to determine which requirements that are most important, and in which order requirements should be developed and tested throughout the development lifecycle. By prioritizing the requirements, software engineers can put focus on a subset of all requirements, and implement these in a particular release. This thesis aims to analyze two ratio scale prioritization techniques in a controlled experiment. The experiment was designed to compare time consumption, scalability, accuracy, ease of use, and ease to learning between the two techniques. All these evaluation parameters are combined together to find out which technique is more suitable to use when prioritizing software requirements. The two techniques investigated in the study presented in this thesis are: Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), which is based on pair-wise comparisons; and Cumulative Voting (CV) which is based on distributing points between requirements. The results of the experiment indicate that CV is less time consuming than AHP, which makes it more scalable. Further, CV is regarded as easier to use, and easier to learn than AHP. In addition, the results show that CV is more accurate than AHP while measuring the perceived accuracy. However, no conclusions could be made regarding actual accuracy due to misinterpretations by the study participants.

Brazilian agribusiness is a sector of the economy that has historically demonstrated strength and growth, with emphasis on the agricultural sector that has been presenting production volumes and increasing productivity rates. Despite this, the exceptional competitiveness of Brazilian primary production is gradually diluted as its products leave the rural property to the subsequent links of the productive chains. The logistical obstacles faced by the national agribusiness to transport its wealth are notable, with problems such as the imbalance of the freight transport matrix, depleted transport infrastructure, insufficient static storage capacity and "bottlenecks" in the best known ports. However, little is known about another fundamental component for the logistic efficiency of agribusiness: rural roads. From the moment that the agricultural and livestock production leaves the rural property, the rural road network is the first element with potential of impact to the competitiveness of agribusiness, and few researches were undertaken with this theme. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate and describe the criteria that make a rural road suitable for the transport of inputs and agricultural production. The research was geographically delimited to the municipality of Marechal Cândido Rondon, located in the western mesoregion of the state of Paraná, because this municipality presents its economic base based on agribusiness. The methodology used was the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), since it is able to measure mathematically subjective and objective attributes in a joint way, through comparisons made by individuals with knowledge of the subject matter. The methodological procedures were bibliographic research and non-systematized field survey for initial exploratory analysis, in addition to a survey to deepen the research. A total of 97 interviews were carried out with the application of a form with drivers who transport loads in the rural road network of the municipality. From the initial exploratory survey, 20 criteria potentially relevant to the adequacy of a rural road were related, and the results of the survey indicated a set of 7 priority criteria: integrity and conservation status under satisfactory conditions; track with surface coating that provides better conditions of support and trafficability, mainly asphalt paving; runway with low slope of cross section; full track without deformation; runway without loose / disaggregated materials; platform with adequate surface drainage and low intensity (volume) of traffic. It is concluded, therefore, that these are the attributes of rural roads of greater essentiality for the accomplishment of agribusiness cargo transport activities.

Abstract:
Strategic management of wildlands for fire is increasingly a mix of traditional firescience, climatology and human perceptions. Not only must managers be expert atmodeling fuels and fire behavior, they must also understand human behavior, and theeffects of climate on landscapes. We hypothiszed that areas in national forests differspatially in their importance to stakeholders, including both the public and landmanagers. That this difference is based upon the inclusion of factors not typically foundin wildland fire models. To test this hypothesis we used a multidimensional approach toassess the spatial variability several factors including recreation, property values and fuelmoisture. This approach combined a geographic information system with the analytichierarchy process to predict and test the current distribution of areas in national forestsimportant to stakeholders.Inclusion of stakeholders appears to improve the validity and useability of aspatial decision support system. Comparing the model created in this dissertation withseveral others demonstrates that it is important to strike the right balance betweenstakeholders and technical experts when designing and creating a model. It is alwaysbeneficial, however, to a significant level of stakeholder involvement.Areas important for fire mitigation efforts depended on the stakeholder oraudience rating the model. Raters from the U.S. Forest Service tended to favor areas withhigh fire probability scores, while those from the Park Service prefered recreation areasand places people value. In both cases, locations people had easy access to, such as alongroads and trails were favored. These results confirmed the hypothesis that areas of importance are differentbased on the individual rating the model. Further testing and refinement of the modelincludes expanding the study area beyond the southwestern United States as wells asobtaining better sources of data with finer spatial resolutions.

Abstract:
Ventilation is a critical task in underground mining operation. Lack of a good ventilation system causes accumulation of harmful gases, explosions, and even fatalities. A proper ventilation system provides adequate fresh air to miners for a safe and comfortable working environment. Fans, which provide air flow to different faces of a mine, have great impact in ventilation systems. Thus, selection of appropriate fans for a mine is the acute task. Unsuitable selection of a fan decreases safety and production rate, which increases capital and operational costs. Moreover, pitch angle of fans&rsquo
blades plays an important role in fan&rsquo
s efficiency. Therefore, selection of a fan and its pitch angle, which yields the maximum efficiency, is an emerging issue for an efficient mine ventilation. The main objective of this research study is to provide a decision making methodology for the selection of a main fan and its appropriate pitch angle for efficient mine ventilation. Nowadays, analytical hierarchy process as multi criteria decision making is used, and it yields outputs based on pairwise comparison. On the other hand, Fuzzy Logic as a soft computing method was combined with analytical hierarchy process and combined model did not yield appropriate results
because Fuzzy AHP increased uncertainty ratio in this study. However, fuzzy analytical hierarchy process might be inapplicable when it faces with vague and complex data set. Soft computing methods can be utilized for complicated situations. One of the soft computing methods is a Neuro-Fuzzy algorithm which is used in classification and DM issues. This study has two phases: i) selection of an appropriate fan using Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (Fuzzy AHP) and ii) selection of an appropriate pitch angle using Neuro-Fuzzy algorithm and Fuzzy AHP method. This study showed that AHP can be effectively utilized for main fan selection. It performs better than Fuzzy AHP because FAHP contains more expertise and makes problems more complex for evaluating. When FAHP and Neuro-Fuzzy is compared for pitch angle selection, both methodologies yielded the same results. Therefore, utilization of Neuro-Fuzzy in situation with complicated and vague data will be applicable.

Abstract:
The German government is experiencing difficulties housing and assimilating Syrian refugees in its borders. Erecting temporary shelters on location is one way to deal with the current crises. This thesis attempts to use Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to determine the optimum combination of materials and construction methods to be used in the shelter’s walls in order to improve the living conditions of the refugees and to ensure that the cost is acceptable to the German government. This thesis compares six existing wall panel products from China, which have the lowest cost on the worldwide market. The R-value, strength, price, weight, durability, ease of assembly, assembly time, maintenance costs, comfort, resale value, and appearance were evaluated. Assumptions were made on what the German government would require and on standard building practices in Europe and America. The analysis indicates that the steel frame house from YONGYANG Steel best satisfies the needs in this situation. This thesis produced an AHP template, which is flexible. This model that was developed for the German scenario can be effectively applied to differing emergent situations in other parts of the world.

Abstract:
The location of logistics hubs is one of the most crucial success factors for potential economic growth in logistics sector. Since the logistics hub has direct and indirect impacts on different stakeholders including investors, policy makers, infrastructure providers, hub operators, hub users and the community itself, it needs to be considered carefully. Therefore, logistics hubs should be located in such a way that it can provide a better accessibility to three different modes of transportation- road, rail and waterways. The aim of this study is to evaluate the potential locations for logistics hubs and to find out the criteria that affect for the selection of location for logistics hubs. A comprehensive literature study reveals the factors that are affecting the selection of location for logistics hubs and the methods to evaluate those locations considering the criteria. Location selection or evaluation is a typical multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) problem in which performance criteria plays a vital role for the final decision making. Both qualitative and quantitative MCDM methods are applied in this study, where the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is qualitative and the gravity method is quantitative method. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is a structured approach to reach the final decision which is one of the best methods of all MCDM problems, used in recent literature to evaluate the location selection problems. A case study is done for the logistics company, Brinova Fastigheter AB in Sweden. This study is followed by AHP method which is considered with selected factors, i.e. highway accessibility, intermodal capacity, port capacity and land availability. Moreover, this study is conducted by evaluating the four major potential locations in Sweden i.e. Stockholm, Göteborg, Helsingborg and Karlshamn for selecting as a logistics hub. Besides, the location for selecting logistics hubs is evaluated by the gravity method, which is a quantitative method to determine the level of accessibility for the selected locations, considering the flow of goods both inbound and outbound and the transport cost between the locations. The result from the AHP method recommend that Göteborg is the best potential location to establish logistic hub whereas the Gravity model represents that Stockholm has the highest level of accessibility for logistics activity. Therefore the study suggested that both Göteborg and Stockholm are considered to be the best potential locations considering in present situation

Abstract:
Logistics outsourcing has been applied in practices by enterprises for decades, but its efficiency is always restricted because logistics service providers (LSPs) often only have a single function such as delivery or warehousing. In the last few years, LSPs have upgraded their capabilities to support some other logistics services including value-added services, materials management, information-related services etc. The purpose of this thesis is to identify the differences between self-built logistics system and outsourcing logistics system by using the Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities Threats (SWOT) strategic analysis; and figure out how to apply the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to make an appropriate selection among LSPs that based on the single-case study of Gevalia. Both quantitative and qualitative methods have been used in this study, authors expect to describe and explore the application of AHP approach regarding to the case company which implements outsourcing logistics system. Accordingly, it could be a good idea for case company to implement the mixed mode of self-built and outsourcing logistics system after using the SWOT strategic analysis. In addition, the production and logistics manager of case company emphasized that the five selection criteria including “compatibility”, “delivery performance”, “location”, “management” and “cost” should be considered as a priority among other different criterion when he selected a LSP. As a result, it will be efficient and effective for us to simulate a best decision for those industrial manufacturing enterprises to achieve a path regarding to the selection of the best logistics partner that based on the significant AHP approach.

Abstract:
Nowadays the mitigation of climate change and the reduction of greenhouse gases are one of the priorities in the international affairs. Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is one of the products generated according to this request. For China, CDM brings advanced technologies in terms of energy saving and emission reduction, and driving forces for sustainable development, hereby the development of CDM projects is in full swing in China so far. However, it is not easy to decide which type of CDM projects is suitable for a certain city or region, which project contributes more to sustainable development compared with others, when it comes to several alternatives. In this case, decision-makers require a tool to help make a rational decision. As one of the approaches of assisting in making decisions, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is able to provide assistance for decision-makers to compare the contribution of discrepant CDM projects to sustainable development. Moreover, a case study is taken between two typical CDM projects: HFC23 decomposition project and small-scale hydropower project, so as to check if AHP is useable. The result of the case study indicates that HFC23 decomposition project contributes more than small-scale hydropower plant project to sustainable development, which is not in line with China’s CDM development trend for these two projects (NCCCC, 2005), due to the different represented interests of the study group and the real decision-makers. Nevertheless, the result is rational and valid since there is nothing wrong with the AHP method and its application. In addition, in order to improve the effect of assisting in decision making, AHP was tried to be improved in three respects: impairing subjectiveness, avoiding rank reversal and improving accuracy. Even though for AHP itself, DEA/AHP approach could successfully eliminate the subjectiveness, however when it comes to this very case: compare CDM projects in terms of contribution to sustainable development in China, it cannot play an effective role. Moreover, PCA/AHP method cannot eliminate the subjectiveness at the root either. The framework method provides a possibility in theory to increase objectiveness. Two expects provided a feasible way to avoid rank reversal in their article, and the two pathways of improving results accuracy mentioned in this thesis are considered inappropriate in this case. On the other side, concerning AHP application, how to covert realistic issues to AHP structure, how to get desirable initial information, and how to avoid limitation generated by considerable criteria, sub-criteria and alternatives are considered as the difficulties which should be paid attention. In future, AHP could be applied frequently and effectively concerning providing assistance in making decisions in China, if the stakeholders as many as possible are involved in decision-making process.

The objective of this dissertation is to propose a Multi Criteria Decision Aid Model to be used by the costumers of the travel agencies and help them to choose the best package travel. The main objective is to contribute for the simplification of the travel package decision choice from the identification of the models of values and preference of the customers and applying them to the existing package. It is used the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method to structuralize a decision hierarchic model composed by six criteria (package cost, hotel category, security of the city, travel time, direct flight and position in ranking of the 10 most visited destination) and five real alternatives of packages for a holiday of three days created from travel agency data. The decision analysis was realized for the choice of a travel package by a group composed by two couples that regularly travels together, to which was asked to do a pairwise judgment of the criteria and the alternatives. The mains results show that, although been a group that travels together, there are different models of values in the weights of the criteria and a certain convergence in the scales of preferences of the alternatives in the criteria. It was not pointed a dominant alternative for all the members of the group separately, but an analysis of a total utility of the group shows a classification and an order of the travel packages and an alternative clearly in front of the others. The sensitivity analysis revels that there are changes in the ranking, but the two alternatives best classified in the normal analysis are the same ones in the sensitivity analysis, although with the positions changed. The analysis also led to a simplification of the process with the exclusion of alternatives dominated for the others ones. As main conclusion, it is evaluated that the model and method suggested allow a simplification of the decision process in the choice of travel packages
Abstract: Currently, remote sensing has advanced its use in various segments of the academic society and business, as well as, the public and private initiatives, given the amounts of satellites already in orbit and the ongoing launches of several types of remote sensors. Several nations have the goal of geospatial independence, either by national security issues or strategies of economic development policy, which is why the huge amounts invested in innovation and geospatial technologies. In this sense, we can cite numerous applications of remote sensing, as planning policies for land use and occupation, government oversight of borders, environmental planning, mapping and analysis of land use, analysis of the spatial-temporal dynamics of soil use and land use, forests, agriculture, among many others. Regarding the questions of applications of remote sensing in agriculture, is worth emphasizing the importance of national energy sector sugar as a source of various wealth, as the production of sugar, ethanol, bioelectricity and sub products, and also contributing to a renewable energy matrix. Thus, this study aims to identify and prioritize the main applications of Remote Sensing in the sugar energy sector, as well as, assess the constraints to increase use of geotechnologies. For didactic purposes of this research, as well as, marketing for the diagnosis was classified in this study three main groups of geotechnologies uses, applications in the management of agronomic factors of production, environmental applications, and support of business management. In the group analysis of constraints were listed three major factors restricting current use, such as remote sensing knowledge and costs of remote sensing technologies, as well as, the availability of Human Resources for the energy sector sugar. This work was carried out with a survey with experts with the major players in the segment of sugar energy in the Mid-South production areas. The representativeness of the survey considering 2012/2013 was approximately 35% of total production, which is forecasting 448 million tons (Conab, the first survey - April 2012). As a tool of analysis and supporting information from polls was used multicriteria method AHP - Analytic Hierarchy Process. The results presented in this research prioritize the main applications of remote sensing as Applications for Agriculture, Environment and Business Management, and as major constraints are: Knowledge of Remote Sensing Technology, Human Resource Availability and Costs of Remote Sensing Technologies. Abstract:
GWAS mainly aim to identify variations associated with certain phenotypes or diseases. Recently the combined p-value approach is described as the next step after GWAS to map the significant SNPs to genes and pathways to evaluate SNP-gene-disease associations. Major bottleneck of standard GWAS approaches is the prioritization of statistically significant results. The connection between statistical analysis and biological relevance should be established to understand the underlying molecular mechanisms of diseases. There are few tools offered for SNP prioritization but these are mainly based on user-defined subjective parameters, which are hard to standardize. Our group has recently developed a novel AHP based SNP prioritization algorithm. Beside statistical association AHP based SNP prioritization algorithm scores SNPs according to their biological relevance in terms of genomic location, functional consequence, evolutionary conservation, and gene-disease association. This allows researchers to evaluate the significantly associated SNPs quickly and objectively. Here, we have investigated the performance of the AHP based prioritization as the next step in the utilization of the algorithm in comparison to the other available tools for SNP prioritization. The user-defined parameters for AHP based prioritization have been investigated and our suggestion on how to use these parameters are presented. Additionally, the GWAS results from the analysis of two different sets of Alzheimer Disease Genotyping data with the newly proposed AHP based prioritization and the integrated software, METU-SNP, it was implemented, is reported and our new findings on the association of SNPs and genes with AD based on this analysis is discussed.

Abstract:
Since the emergence in the early 1990s, PPP options have become increasingly popular to the governments of both developed and developing countries. On average, US$ 95b are invested annually in the developing countries in the form of PPP options up until 2017. However, a mixed result is documented with respect to their performances. PPP arrangements include multiple stakeholders that have diverse interests associated with their particular affiliations, and accordingly the performance expectations of these stakeholders also differ. Traditional approaches to performance evaluation are unable to capture all of the expectations to be included in the process of PPP project evaluation. Hence, using appropriate performance indicators and analysing their relative importance in influencing the performance score of particular projects remains unexplored in the developing country context. Against this backdrop, this study examines current practices of PPP performance evaluation, develops a framework of weighted performance indicators for developing countries and applies the model in a number of PPP projects in Bangladesh. A mixedmethod approach has been used, which includes the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) for establishing weights of the key performance areas (KPAs) and associated indicators and a case study method for applying the developed model to selected PPP projects in Bangladesh. Results show that ‘financing’, ‘planning and initiation’ and ‘transparency and accountability’ are the most important KPAs in evaluating PPP performances in Bangladesh and ‘feasibility analysis’, ‘life cycle evaluation and monitoring’ and ‘optimal risk allocation’ are the most significant performance indicators. Unlike traditional performance evaluation methods, a prioritised set of performance indicators and KPAs for the PPPs of Bangladesh has been identified. The findings also reveal that sincere government commitment is relatively more important for the success of PPPs than the enactment of enabling legislation in the context of developing countries. This suggests more efforts are required to be employed by the host government to build confidence in the private partner selected for engagement in PPP arrangements. Furthermore, a framework for performance evaluation of power sector PPPs, based on the KPAs, has been proposed. This could be used for evaluating the performance of power PPPs in a more objective and systematic way in Bangladesh and other South Asian countries. Finally, the weighted process applied to the various performance indicators provides an improved understanding of the relative significance of KPAs and their component indicators. Attaching weights to the KPAs and performance indicators of PPPs, and applying those weights to derive individual project scores in a developing country context, especially in Bangladesh, represents an innovation and thus a contribution to the PPP performance literature. Awareness of the outcomes of the weighted performance evaluation process developed in this study could help project implementers and regulators prioritise their attention and resource allocation decisions related to achievement of performance improvement on the more significant key performance areas. The weighted process is expected to contribute to reducing biases of either perceived Likert scaled scores or only the weightings in PPP performance evaluation.

Taiwan Power Company (TPC) is a public service unit in Taiwan; its main business includes generating, transporting and distributing electricity. Field staff of TPC must continually install new or inspect existing power network along roads or in mountainous areas in order to provide adequate services to customers so that they suffer high frequency of transportation-related accidents. During the period between 2001 and 2010, there are 291 traffic accidents, or 62.7% of the total number of accidents for TPC, reported by field staffs causing financial losses to the Company and indelible pains to the surviving family. In this research, a “safety factor” is proposed based on analyzing the information and data collected on the national and TPC transportation-related accidents for recent decades as the basis for evaluating the overall traffic safety. Questionnaires are then distributed to TPC field engineers and personnel who are involved in various levels of TPC management to collect their opinions and comments. The information is then analyzed using the AHP (Analytic Hierarchy process) to find out causes for the reported accidents, and the results reveal that the C.R.iterion order of importance for the traffic safety factor is “human factor”, “Environmental factor”, “road factor”, and “vehicular factor”. Factors such as drunk driving, not obeying traffic signals, obstacles on road, and uneven road surface are identified to cause accidents. Additionally, for TPC field staffs, scattered aggregates and pebbles, puddles, loose sand and aggregates, and uneven road surface caused by sporadic afternoon thunderstorm are recognized to cause high frequency of traffic accidents. Recommendations based on the findings have been proposed to TPC for improving the situation to reduced future accidents.

With the rapidly growing trend of wearable technology, the development of these devices is becoming more important as technology is continuously being integrated into our daily life. International investigation firm Gartner predicted that global output of wearable technology devices will be $ 10 billion by 2016. The application potential in many different industries are limitless and of a time sensitive nature as many firms are already developing and bringing products to market. In the healthcare industry alone, the wearable technology device provides many self-management health platforms including front-end physiological parameter gathering, and back-end expert consultation. In one specific example, they are currently developing a smart phone APP, which accumulates users' physiological parameters from either intelligent wearable technology devices or manual input, and feeds it into an online cloud database, where experts such as a nutritionist can effectively offer timely feedback to the user. The main purpose of this study is to obtain critical factors regarding how new products such as intelligent medical wearable devices should be designed, based on experts’ opinions, in order to improve the customers’ acceptance of this technology, and assist in new product development from start to growth. The initial criteria of this study were based on previous smart phone design references and in-depth interviews with experts who have years of experience understanding adapted use of such medical devices by customers. We then screened the initial criteria with the Fuzzy Delphi method and used the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) method to obtain critical factors with relative importance weights that can provide designers as well as business planners suggestions in the new product development stage. The result showed that the most significant dimension of intelligent wearable device in the health-care field is the "functional properties"; the second is the "style image", while the "environmental concern" has less impact. Further analysis of the factors under dimensions also showed that "the functional convenience properties" is the most important. This suggests that in addition to providing on-time measuring functions through cloud computing technology, the intelligent wearable medical device should also provide other fundamental and useful functions such as vibration warning, etc. Although our study showed that the environmental factor is not significant, we suggest that the recycling technology is worth concerned, as it could eliminate unnecessary waste or even lower related costs of the intelligent medical wearable devices. The recommendation for future research is that we can use the big data we have collected from this platform to classify customer groups, and cross analyze the results of this study with other research areas for future and varying industry analysis.

This is a study base on Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) which we discuss with the promotion policy of LPG vehicles and its performing limitations. Then analyzing the main factor with questionnaires in which LPG vehicles could be accepted by the public. The results show that the safety of LPG vehicles is most emphasized which including the safety of LPG equipments and the promotion of its safety. For example, the gas steel cylinders of LPG cars are safer than the fuel tanks of the cars we drive, however, people still think there is a possibility of explosion and afraid of changing a LPG engine. The purposes of this study are as follows: 1. To explore the relationship between the difficulties in promoting LPG and the reason it is rejected by the public in Taiwan. 2. Could the present policy be further improved to increase the will of people in using LPG engines?

Tourism industry is commonly known as non-smokestack industry. The challenges of Taiwan's economy are confronted with wages stagnation as well as the limited and contracted employment opportunities. The tourism industry not only can promote and expand employment, stimulate growth of economy, but also can bring in the multiplier effect serving as a new driver of economic growth in Taiwan. This study focuses on the National Scenic Area (NSA), explores factors of marketing competitive advantage, and constructs effective focused marketing strategies. National Scenic Area is an important resource for Taiwan tourism industry. To build a competitive advantage and a superior positioning in the minds of domestic and overseatourists, tourism industry must transform from the traditional producers and providers into a "value creator", and strive to create a value-added NSA. Regarding of the market segment, target market selection and even the strategic positioning as well as the marketing mix under the strategic planning, 4P must be re-examined and reformed to meet the new era of consumer demand for domestic and foreign tourists. This study uses modified Delphi methodwith Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and targets interviewees from industrial, governmental and academics sectors. The results discover that (a)While constructing competitive advantage for the NSA, “strategic positioning” should be first emphasized, in particular, developing distinct long-term strategic goals; (b) in terms of product strategies, the NSA should focus on integrated product strategies regarding top tourism services quality, transportation convenience, diverse recreational activities and accommodation facilities, i.e. to construct superior products; (c) as for pricing strategies, NSA should tailor its strategic pricing to different targeted groups, and should integrate the development of related supportive industries, design modular tour packages to enrich the versatility of competitive pricing and construct marketing competitive advantage; (d) the NSA should adopt both virtual and actual channel strategies as their channel strategiesand combine themwith related industries to establish integrated channel network enabling a full range of seamless travel experience for tourists and visitors; (e) after strategic positioning and enhancing the product strategies are accomplished, additional integrated marketing components can have massive marketing campaigns ready to be launched.

Open tendering procedure generally plays a major part in public constructions procurement procedures to award the procurement by selecting the most appropriate supplier with either "the lowest-price tender" or "the most advantage tender". Awarding the procurement based on the principle of the lowest-price ender usually execute the inspection of low-price and low-quality. The consequence of this rule of tender-awarding might cause the continuously disturbing of maintenance to the entity, or the controversy of contract performing during the stage of inspection and acceptance. Awarding the procurement based on the principle of the most advantage can solve the problem of low-quality construction caused by the lowest-price tender orientation, however, the formulation of selecting component and selecting weight to synthesize the integral competence of suppliers to ensure them to contract it. This research will adopt the analytic hierarchy process to constitute its selecting element, and proceed with the questionnaire to build the selecting items and weights to assist the government in the reference basis of selecting suppliers for procurement projects.

A credit scoring model integrates a statistical method with the opinions of an expert group and therefore contains a combination of risk factors and weights. The assignment of weights in the modeling processes is a central interest of and a prime challenge for most financial institutions. Traditionally, an expert group determines the weights in accordance with the experts’ views on the importance of the various risk factors. However, the group’s members often have conflicting objectives (i.e., risk minimization vs. market share maximization) and can be dominated by a single dominating opinion maker, which leads to bias and poor model performance. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is a multiple-criteria decision-making tool that has been successfully used in various fields. This study is the pioneer to apply the AHP method to the credit scoring process to create a model that increases the predictive power. The study then tests the AHP model in a case study and compares the results with existing scoring techniques. The findings suggest that the AHP scoring model significantly improves the credit scoring model’s predictive ability.
