Kim, Soo Hong. "The Songs of Giacomo Puccini: An Analytical Study of His Style and Self-borrowing." Thesis, University of North Texas, 1997. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc935714/.

Full text
Abstract:
The songs of Puccini provide another approach to understanding the composer's musical development. The objective of the study is twofold; first to provide a discussion of the musical style of Puccini's songs; and second, to show how Puccini utilized and integrated the preexistent material into the operas. The songs are grouped and characterized in three stylistic periods. In each period, Puccini was concerned with different issues in text setting. They anticipated or corresponded to the musical style of his operas, and this is evident by his use of the earlier songs in the later operas. Three examples of such cases are examined. The details involved in the transformation of self-borrowing are illustrated in terms of recomposition, expansion of the vocal line and orchestration. Each case illustrates the textual and/or musical consideration by Puccini of the original source for the new dramatic context of the opera. The borrowed material, often incorporated with new themes and expressive orchestration, blooms as an effective dramatic piece of music in his operas. In addition to the lecture recital, based on the dissertation and given on June 23, 1997, three other public recitals were performed. The first, on February 27, 1989, included works of Schubert, Brahms, Wolf, and Strauss. The second program, an operatic performance of The Queen of Spades by Tchaikovsky, was given on April 20, 1991. The third recital was performed on February 20, 1995, and included works by Handel, Mozart, Stravinsky, Schubert, Poulenc, and Turina.

Abstract:
Through exploring the use of documentary style in a selection of contemporary American comedy series, this thesis closes in on the question whether texts that stylistically differ from traditional sitcom can still be regarded as part of the sitcom genre. The contemporary American TV series that are being analyzed are The Office, Arrested Development, Modern Family, Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Michael J. Fox Show. As the series’ place within sitcom becomes apparent, the analysis ultimately leads to a critical investigation of the term “comedy verite.” Questioning the concepts applicability for the American series and their development leads to the investigation of new definitions. This analysis of contemporary televisual styles reveals a myriad of deeper issues and elucidates how stylistic developments point towards broader developments of the TV medium – towards a medium more and more defined by, or even drenched in, “reality.”

Feng, Yang. "Thinking Holistically versus Analytically: Exploring the Impact of Culture on Consumers' Cognitive Responses to Ads." OpenSIUC, 2014. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/dissertations/817.

Full text
Abstract:
Along with China's economic growth and opening to the outside world, Chinese young people (mainly the post-80s and the post-90s) are affected by the commercialized culture. When targeting young consumers across cultures, many international advertisers prefer to use standardized visual advertisements. However, culture plays a key role in international advertising as the interpretation of advertising messages varies across cultures. Based on the framework of Analytic/Holistic Thought and Hybridity Theory, this study argued that Chinese and American young consumers adopt different thought patterns to process advertising messages. Looking at two important factors in advertising---image type and product type, this study advocated that marketers need to match the image type with their advertised products or brands, and to adopt congruous images that fit into young Chinese and American consumers' thought patterns. Past research on cultural studies and sociology has contributed to our understanding of how culture shapes the construction and deconstruction of advertising messages, and of the importance of image type used in advertising. In addition, marketing research helps us understand global consumer behaviors, the relationship between consumers' interpretations of ad messages and their attitudinal responses, and the importance of product type. Further, studies from cognitive psychology have provided useful framework for us to analyze the nature of human advertising behaviors and responses. Given the literature, this study sought to understand how culture influences consumers' interpretations of ad messages and how the interpretations further influence their evaluations of the ad and product, and their purchase intentions. This study employed a quantitative experimental design that included qualitative open-ended questions. The experiment tested the effect of culture on generating product/brand thoughts, examined the interaction effect of image type and product type on young consumers' attitudes and purchase intentions, and explored the relationship between the number of generated product/brand thoughts and ad effectiveness. The qualitative questions sought to explore how consumers across cultures recalled different types of objects from the ads and generated different types of product/brand thoughts. In conclusion, the study noted the following two key points: First, Chinese young consumers are less analytic than their American counterparts and tend to be more likely influenced by ad setting while recalling people portrayed in ads. Therefore, advertisers targeting young Chinese consumers may consider using a lifestyle format ad and focusing on portraying the attributes of focal people and objects as well as adding more visual pieces of context information. In contrast, advertising targeting American young consumers can adopt a personalized format, and focus on portraying the attributes of focal people and objects and on linking the attributes of focal people/objects to the product. Second, there is an interactive effect between product type and image type on ad effectiveness. For functional product advertising, using implicit images can be a creative strategy, especially for young Chinese consumers, as they may still infer the performance-related attributes (utilitarian attributes) of the products from background information. However, for symbolic product advertising, it is found that using implicit images discourages both Chinese and American participants from generating product/brand thoughts and from endowing the product with a typical product-user image from the ad.

Åhlfeldt, Lina. "A Dangerous or Necessary Style? : An examination of the relevance of style in philosophy." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Filosofiska institutionen, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-353129.

Full text
Abstract:
No form of philosophy is without literary style. This is not always appreciated and opponents of style within philosophy often seem to be unaware of the role of style. Arguments that style is bad, good, or that diversity of styles is good needs to be investigated so that the underlying presuppositions and the meaning of different literary styles becomes clear. This thesis examines three arguments for and against style within philosophy and the relevance of literary style for the philosophical method. I investigate what arguments and fundamental assumptions about language that underlies the judgments that literary style in philosophy is either 1.) bad, 2.) good or, 3.) both bad and good (a diversity position). An analysis of three different positions to the question of the relevance of style will be performed. The analysis focuses on the basic understandings of what language is and does and reveals the underlying presuppositions of the attitudes towards style in philosophy. Only then can the different positions and attitudes towards style be defended and examined in an interesting and relevant way. The debate about philosophical style often misses a significant point because many are unaware of the philosophical presuppositions behind the arguments, and the argumentation risks to be flawed in relation to this. Firstly, a presentation of three different attitudes towards the relevance of style to the philosophical method is outlined. The approaches are represented by a reading of philosophers who either describe the relevance of literary style as 1.) bad, or not important for the method, 2.) important/necessary for the method, or 3.) that diversity is good for philosophy. Secondly, I examine how these three approaches are affected by the underlying philosophy of language with a focus on theories of metaphor. Depending on how one believes that language is related to reality and ourselves, one will assess style as a more, or less, relevant and contributing aspect of the philosophical work and method. The analysis shows that metaphors and other literary stylistic tools might sometimes be necessary and mediate something that cannot be expressed in another way: language can never capture the full potential of reality.

Full text
Abstract:
Riding's (1991) wholist-analytic dimension of cognitive style proposes a unidimensional view of global-analytic constructs, however, very little empirical evidence exists in support of a relationship between the styles in the wholist-analytic family, which has led to suggestions that style is best conceptualised as a more complex multidimensional construct (Hodgkinson and Sadler-Smith, 2003). Another major problem for Riding's (1991) wholist-analytic style construct is its lack of temporal reliability (Peterson, Deary and Austin, 2003; Rezaei and Katz, 2004; Parkinson, Mullally and Redmond, 2004; Cook, 2008). Furthermore, the current thesis argues that in addition to problems of reliability, the wholist-analytic dimension lacks predictive and construct validity. This thesis outlines two major methodological limitations with the current wholist-analytic ratio measurement, which have raised doubts over the efficacy of the ratio in discriminating between part processing and whole processing style. Firstly, the wholist-analytic ratio is confounded by reflective-impulsive style differences (Kagan, Rosman, Day, Albert and Phillips, 1964). Secondly, the nature of the tasks, combined with strategy preferences, set up an asymmetry in the basis of the wholist-analytic ratio. A new measure of wholist-analytic style, hereafter called the 'Wholist-Analytic Style (WAS) Analysis' has been developed to experimentally manipulate the presentation order of the subtests and the number of parts in the geometric stimuli. Performances on the WAS analysis and the CSA were compared to other styles in the wholist-analytic family to test the unidimensional approach to style. It was found that the wholist-analytic ratio is confounded by sensitivity to reflective style, with much of its discriminatory power being limited to the first subtest, and 6 there is an asymmetry in the part-whole processing basis of the wholist-analytic ratio. Furthermore, there is a consistent relationship between reflective-impulsive style and part-whole processing. This thesis proposes the theory of diminished reflection, which renders the wholist-analytic ratio invalid in its current form. The theory can account for the hereto-unexplained lack of temporal reliability of the wholist-analytic ratio and offers a practical solution to improve both the validity and stability of the ratio. This thesis offers partial support for the unidimensional perspective of style but makes strong links between reflective-impulsive style and part-whole processing preferences.

Abstract:
Individuals' consistent aptitudes in processing information are referred to as cognitive styles (i.e. the wholist-analytic and verbal-imagery cognitive styles). They have been suggested to be relevant to many observed behaviours especially in the learning and teaching circumstances. However, experimental evidence is required to support their validity and further the understanding of their nature. he first stream of inquiry profiled different facets of the nature of the wholist-analytic cognitive style by various strands of evidence. The other stream of investigation examined the verbal-imagery cognitive style, which is concerned with information representation, verbally or pictorially.

Soto, Alberto. "A Meta-Analytic Review of the Association of Therapeutic Alliance, Therapist Empathy, Client Attachment Style, and Client Expectations with Client Outcome." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2017. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/6493.

Full text
Abstract:
The therapeutic alliance has consistently been associated with improved client outcomes across numerous psychotherapy outcome studies. Previous systematic reviews have, however, evaluated the univariate association of the alliance with client outcome. The present meta-analytic review examines the association of the alliance with improved client outcomes after accounting for the presence of therapist empathy, client attachment styles, and client expectations. Across 23 independent studies, the alliance, adjusted for the presence of the other variables, remained as the most robust predictor of improved outcomes r = .258 (SE = .01, p < .001), with a 95% confidence interval of r = .18 to r = .33. After accounting for therapeutic alliance, therapist empathy was a small but statistically significant predictor of improved outcomes. These findings provide the first attempt at synthesizing multivariate estimates of the contribution of the alliance with improved outcomes when in the presence of empathy, client attachment style, and client expectations. The findings presented here suggest the superordinate nature of the alliance as a variable that exists on a separate conceptual level from the other variables evaluated.

Lawrence, Nina. "Volatile metabolic profiling of SA Chenin blanc fresh and fruity and rich and ripe wine styles : development of analytical methods for flavour compounds (aroma and flavour) and application of chemometrics for resolution of complex analytical measurements." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/20331.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2012<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aroma and flavour of wine are important aspects that form the basis for consumers’ organoleptic experience of wine. Therefore, an understanding of the chemical composition of wine aroma is of major importance, to establish possible links between wine chemistry, sensory attributes and consumer preference for a product. For this purpose analytical chemistry and multivariate techniques are indispensable tools for the metabolic profiling of wine. Chenin blanc is one of the most important South African export white wine varieties. However, despite its importance, very limited profiling of Chenin blanc aroma compounds has been done and information is restricted to isolated and dated reports on a few chemical compounds only. Therefore, the overall aim of this study was to obtain an in-depth view of the volatile chemical profile of this cultivar. The first task was to perform targeted volatile metabolic profiling of the three dry and offdry Chenin blanc styles, fresh and fruity, rich and ripe unwooded and rich and ripe wooded. To this end, a new, simple and robust liquid-liquid extraction technique using dichloromethane was developed and validated for extraction of analytes prior to gas chromatography flame ionization detection (GC-FID) analysis, to quantify 57 analytes in one rapid analytical procedure. This method was applied to profile 48 Chenin blanc wines. Very successful discrimination between the three styles, using the quantified volatile compounds, was obtained with two multivariate methods. These were partial least squares regression-discriminant analysis, (PLS-DA), as well linear-DA, using best subset selection for identifying the most important variables. According to the classification models, a higher content of maturation derived, malolactic fermentation derived and wood derived compounds were predominantly characteristic of the wooded wines. Higher content of some terpenes and ethyl esters were predominantly associated with the rich and ripe unwooded style Chenin blanc wines, while the fresh and fruity style were generally characterized by high levels of acetate esters. Secondly, untargeted analysis of 21 wines was done with gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Mathematical chromatography, using PARAllel FACtor analysis (PARAFAC and PARAFAC2), was applied to the GC-MS data for resolution of the complex chromatographic results by multi-way modeling, and to derive unbiased multivariate classification models of the three styles. This approach provided excellent style differentiation, without the arduous task of analysis of numerous standards and setting up of calibration curves, required by the targeted approach described above. Additionally, the data generated during this study will form part of the current South African wine aroma database, which does not contain any data regarding Chenin blanc at present.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die aroma en geur van wyn is belangrike aspekte aangesien dit die basis vorm van die wynverbruiker se organoleptiese ervaring van die produk.

In 2016 employers hiring four-year college graduates indicate that 27.8% have deficiencies in written communication. Postsecondary learning objectives should focus on improving specific writing skills like grammar, sentence structure, and vocabulary usage for individual students and monitoring text readability as an overall score to measure learning outcomes. Web-based applications and the tools integrated into them have the potential to serve as a diagnostic solution for analyzing the text readability and writing skills of students. Organization and structuring of Canvas data was required before adding text readability and other writing skills analytics as part of the process to develop diagnostic learning analytics that interprets student writing skills in the learning management system. Decision modeling was used to capture and describe the specifics of literacy improvement decisions for instructors and administrators in a graphical notation and structured format.

Trippas, Dries. "Motivated reasoning and response bias : a signal detection approach." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/2853.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this dissertation was to address a theoretical debate on belief bias. Belief bias is the tendency for people to be influenced by their prior beliefs when engaged in deductive reasoning. Deduction is the act of drawing necessary conclusions from premises which are meant to be assumed as true. Given that the logical validity of an argument is independent of its content, being influenced by your prior beliefs in such content is considered a bias. Traditional theories posit there are two belief bias components. Motivated reasoning is the tendency to reason better for arguments with unbelievable conclusions relative to arguments with believable conclusions. Response bias is the tendency to accept believable arguments and to reject unbelievable arguments. Dube et al. (2010) pointed out critical methodological problems that undermine evidence for traditional theories. Using signal detection theory (SDT), they found evidence for response bias only. We adopted the SDT method to compare the viability of the traditional and the response bias accounts. In Chapter 1 the relevant literature is reviewed. In Chapter 2 four experiments which employed a novel SDT-based forced choice reasoning method are presented, showing evidence compatible with motivated reasoning. In Chapter 3 four experiments which used the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) method are presented. Crucially, cognitive ability turned out to be linked to motivated reasoning. In Chapter 4 three experiments are presented in which we investigated the impact of cognitive ability and analytic cognitive style on belief bias, concluding that cognitive style mediated the effects of cognitive ability on motivated reasoning. In Chapter 5 we discuss our findings in light of a novel individual differences account of belief bias. We conclude that using the appropriate measurement method and taking individual differences into account are two key elements to furthering our understanding of belief bias, human reasoning, and cognitive psychology in general.

Abstract:
The study of the argumentation in two novels of Michel Rio aims at proposing a certain number of instruments making it possible to read the tale as a tool of persuasion. This work intends to show how the tale influences the reader and seeks sometimes to make him adhere to a specific thesis, sometimes to direct his way of perceiving ambient reality. For this purpose, this work is divided into four chapters. In the first, we show the pragmatic character of the tale of Dreaming Jungles and Alizés, which, as philosophical and encyclopaedic novels, try to make the reader think and to transmit to him a knowledge about the world. The analysis of the process of persuasion of the two novels is based on three axes corresponding to the three main forms of rhetoric: ethos, logos and pathos. The study of the narrative ethos within the framework of the situation of enunciation in the tale enabled us to find out the means by which the author reinforces the ethos of fictional characters and of the narrator. The third chapter: "the narrative logos” examines the means by which the pragmatic tales call upon the reason of the reader by combining the preliminary points of agreement (facts, the doxa, values, topics, … etc.) and the logical reasoning. In chapter 4:“the narrative pathos”, we endeavour to point out the tools that the author uses to generate the emotions at the readers and to make them favourable to his thesis. Finally, in our study, we show how rhetoric can combine with the techniques of narratology, semiotics, pragmatic and speech analytics to allow to the author to influence the reader

Doctoral thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.5/20019.

Abstract:
The objectives of this investigation were to identify the decision-making styles of football referees in the first category, as well as the influence of variants such as nationality, age class, type of training, function, the number of years of arbitration and the number of years in the same category. A questionnaire titled "Decision Style Inventory" (Rowe, 1981) was translated and adapted to the Portuguese reality in 2001 by the management department of the faculty of human mobility of the University of Lisbon. The sample of this study is made up of 94 first category football referees (50 Portuguese referees and 44 Brazilian referees), all male with an average age of 35 years. The analysis of the obtained data was developed in SPSS Statistics, version 24. To test the normality of the distributions, the Shapiro Wilk test was used, followed by inferential statistics by comparison of the averages ("T-Student" test for two groups). ANOVA post-doc and Bonferroni for more than two groups) and the relationship of two variables (contingency coefficient and qui-square test). The results suggest that football referees in the first category have a dominant style in decision-making, the analytical style. However, considering the scores attributed to the decision-making styles and checking the second most punctuated style, the directive, we conclude that it is not possible to state clearly that the football referees in the first category have a predominantly dominant style. This inquiry is fundamental. The identification of the decision-making styles of the professional referees in the first category can make a difference in the forms of management and planning of the referee council in football, notably in the appointment of referees to matches and in the referee training.

Abstract:
Past research has suggested that up-regulating displays of happiness leads to positive social outcomes. In my dissertation research, I suggest that whether the up-regulation of displays of happiness leads to positive outcomes depends on observers’ culture. I developed and tested a model of how one aspect of observers’ culture, analytic-holistic thinking, influences the relation between expressers’ displays of happiness and observers’ prosocial behavior. In two studies, I examined how observers’ analytical-holistic thinking moderates the effect of expressers’ inauthentic displays of happiness (regulated through surface acting) and expressers’ authentic displays of happiness (regulated through deep acting) on observers’ prosocial behavior and trust inferences. In a laboratory experiment (Study 1), observers’ analytical-holistic thinking moderated the effect of project leaders’ inauthentic displays of happiness (vs. neutral emotional displays) on observers’ trust in the expresser, but not on observers’ prosocial behavior (time taken to edit a cover letter). In a field fundraising experiment (Study 2), observers’ analytical-holistic thinking moderated the effect of fundraisers’ inauthentic displays of happiness (vs. authentic displays of happiness) on observers’ trust in fundraisers, intentions to volunteer for the charity organization, and monetary donations to the charity organization. Further, observers’ trust in fundraisers mediated the moderating effect of observers’ analytical-holistic thinking on the relation between fundraisers’ inauthentic displays of happiness and observers’ intention to volunteer. Contributions to the literature on the social effects of emotions and to the literature on fundraising and helping as well as practical implications are discussed.

Abstract:
Analytical methods for measurement error estimation in survey data This dissertation aims at the domain of measurement error in social science survey data. To conceptualize and estimate measurement errors it employs the analytical and theoretical framework that stems from the analytical method of structural equation modeling (SEM) and Classical Test Theory (CTT), extended with the component of the systematic measurement error. This thesis has two goals that may contribute to development and extension of Czech social science methodology. The first goal is to illustrate methods of measurement error estimation, which has not been used for analysis of Czech data yet, and to point out to some problematical aspects of these methods. The second goal is to employ presented methods to obtain new findings regarding the quality of data from Czech surveys. The dissertation presents three empirical studies, each of which uses one of the methods defined within the presented theoretical and analytical framework. First study presents an analysis of reliability of measurement with the Quasi Simplex Model (QSM). It illustrates how to use the model and brings optimistic results regarding the reliability of the Czech EU SILC panel data. In the second study the confirmatory factor analysis model, operationally called...

Abstract:
The goal of this thesis is to describe teaching styles of two secondary mathematics teachers with very different approaches. One of them represents traditional frontal instruction and one prefers students to be more actively involved in the learning process. Their styles are compared based on their teaching a concrete mathematical topic, namely plane analytic geometry of lines. Examined teaching styles (frontal instruction and so-called realistic education) and selected research with a similar focus are described in the theoretical part of the thesis. The research consisted of observations in lessons of both teachers and a final test for their students. The acquired data has been analyzed by qualitative and quantitative methods. The teacher representing traditional frontal instruction emphasizes practising and explaining the new topic. Problems are solved by herself or one chosen student on the blackboard. Questions, which she is asking, require mainly short answers and are focused on reproduction of the previously learnt knowledge. During the lessons of the teacher who is the creator and also an exponent of the so-called realistic education, students are solving problems independently. New topics are discussed collectively, the teacher often asks questions focused on the application of previous knowledge,...

Abstract:
Gamblers are known to engage in an array of cognitive distortions that fuel poor gambling decisions. Dual process theory suggests that people have preferences for either intuitive or analytical thinking; and these preferences can predict or influence the choices they make. This thesis explored the interplay between a gambler’s cognitive style (their preference for intuitive vs. analytical thinking), their gambling beliefs, and their consequent gambling behaviour. In order to demonstrate the protective nature of analytical thinking, a measure of protective gambling beliefs was developed that was then incorporated into three additional studies designed to assess how an intuitive cognitive style contributes to poor gambling decisions, and conversely the potential for increased analytical thinking to generate safer gambling. The main findings showed that 1) preferences for intuitive (and lack of analytical) thinking contributes to beliefs about gambling that fuel problem gambling and greater gambling consumption; 2) Using general analytic primes at point of play is counterproductive in generating safer gambling, and counter to expectations, resulted in an increase in positive expectations regarding gambling outcomes; 3) Ongoing analytical training that is specific to gambling, in contrast, resulted in protective belief changes and a reduction in time spent gambling. These findings have implication for generating effective interventions and clinical tools that help demystify the decision-making process for gamblers who may be experiencing harm because of intuitive thinking that contributes to poor gambling choices.

The decision regarding a piece of land to be developed into town-house, combo-house, single-house or commercial store is an excrementally complicated problem. This study integrates the influencing factors of launching a residence case considered by developers. Via expert interviews and relevant data analysis, the study investigates the needs of residence developing to provide decision making assistance in terms of launching a residence developing case. Methods applied to carry out the research mainly include expert questionnaire survey and analytical network process (ANP). Related literatures are reviewed to develop initial assessment factors. The fuzzy Delphi expert questionnaires are then used to build-up the initial assessment criteria. The ANP are used to establish the hierarchy frame and guidelines for relations of interdependence and feedback, and etc. Research results indicate that the priority of assessment items in level II can be identified via the average weight of phase. Ranking the phase in descending order in terms of importance is: transport factor (0.334), natural condition (0.210), building property (0.167), economic factor (0.150) and utilities (0.139). It is obvious that the transport factor is the most important one considered by experts when selecting residence in the particular area. Of the building investment and development assessment factor, excellent living environmental index system, rather than the actual financial benefit index system, ought to be investigated deeply. The transportation condition of the resident site is one of the important indeice when developing residential housing. Natural condition and house property assessment phases reveal that quality living environment is also an important consideration by the real estate developers. Public facility assessment phase shows that regional environment integrity of public facilities and their integration both play an important role in terms of building style selection. Economic factor is secondary importance in terms of residential location assessment. In addition to the higher integration of regional environment infrastructure and real benefits, a quality living environment certainly contributes to real estate development residential location selection of preferred development considerations.

Full text
Abstract:
The dissertation focuses on the early piano sonatas of Russian composer Nikolai Karlovich Medtner (1880–1951). It approaches them in the context of genre history, confronts them with other composers' works, and discusses them from various analytic perspectives. A special goal is to consider the pieces in the aesthetic environment of their time, and to regard them as peculiar instances of the ›sonata principle‹, an ageless conception of musical form. The study is subdivided in three large parts, the first of which presents a summary of sonata composition before Medtner, exploring lines of tradition in Western Europe and Russia. The second part concentrates on Medtner’s musical language and its stylistic features. The third and most comprehensive part provides detailed examinations of eight of Medtner’s piano sonatas, including aspects of their genesis and reception, and making use of recent methods of musical analysis.<br>Die Dissertation widmet sich den frühen Klaviersonaten des russischen Komponisten Nikolaj Karlovič Metner (1880–1951), die im Kontext ihrer Gattungsgeschichte und im Vergleich mit Musik anderer Urheber betrachtet werden.

Abstract:
This study investigates the possibility of applying Hatten’s theory of musical gesture to a formal system of musical analysis. Using historical antecedents and established musicological practice as a guide, a range of musical parameters in a motive length span of music are incorporated into a single gesture. This gesture forms the basic semantic unit upon which an analytical tableau structure is built, and a syntax is developed to allow derivations of new gestures; a large scale structure displaying fractal-like self-similarity is then proposed. The completed system is applied to the analysis of the ‘Adagio’ of Mozart’s Flute Quartet K.285 to test whether it can consistently be implemented and whether it produces falsifiable results while maintaining predictive power. It is found that these requirements are indeed met and that a set of inference rules can be derived suggesting that the proposed system has ample scope for further development.<br>Art History, Visual Arts & Musicology<br>M. The pieces also represent different genres of Albanian piano music. Genres are exceptionally important in this view; the stylish range was reduced, in recent past. The reason was based not on cultural field, but on strict ideological rules. Piano music is embedded in a broader historical context that allows to stress the peculiarities of the Albanian musical language and thereby to clarify the uniqueness and value of selected compositions for the educational needs. Yan, Feng. "Extending the cross-cultural grounds of HRM: thinking styles and long term orientation matter." Doctoral thesis, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10071/25167.

Full text
Abstract:
Cross-cultural research has been gaining momentum ever since the last globalization period began 40 years ago, but its relevance is not smaller even if a deglobalization period ensues. This field of research produced a myriad of constructs and measures to gauge, mostly, cultural differences within organizations and HRM. However, deeper differences have been explored in psychological literature but have not yet found full use within HRM research. These differences pertain to the cognitive and affective processing styles. Such cognitive and affective differences are often outside the conscious scrutiny of individuals and, therefore, makes them critical in the human interaction processes, which are especially important for international HRM. This research gap motivates this study that builds on the expectation that such fundamental differences have not been duly accounted for, mostly because 1) cultural values differences have been dominating the comparative studies, 2) scholars have been working with a profusion of taxonomies that do not converge, and 3) the measures for empirical use have not been tested for autochthone bias. To fill this research gap, this thesis proposes four empirical studies. The first study systematically reviews the literature on fundamental cross-cultural comparative differences in cognition, emotion, and axiology between West and China. Based on 326 valid articles it showed the main constructs to measure relevant differences in human interaction. The second study tests, with a Chinese sample of 254 individuals, the psychometric quality of dominant western measures for these constructs. It found some were usable, but others needed to be revised for such context. Targeting HRM, the third study addresses one of the constructs (temporal horizon) by testing its role as a boundary condition in a model linking HPWS to turnover intentions. With a sample of 430 individuals in China, findings show, at the light of expectancy-valence theory, that the temporal horizon (i.e. long term orientation) matters when designing HPWS intending to retain employees. The fourth study extends this focus by exploring a three-way interaction between individual profiles (cognitive styles and personal values) with an HR-related construct (participative safety) within healthcare organizations. This conditional moderated mediation model intended to explain medical service quality through organizational citizenship behaviors. With a sample of 293 healthcare professionals, findings showed analytical thinking crossed with long-term orientation enacted the effectiveness of HR practices favoring participative safety to increase medical service quality. Findings show a need to converge on the relevant constructs and especially on designing universally valid measures. The affective dimension might be a promising venue for further development as BEQ could not be used in its current form. Findings evidenced that fundamental individual differences other than the cultural values (namely the cognitive style) are important for international HRM and interact in such a way that commonly used explanatory models in the West may not apply at all in other settings, such as China.<br>A investigação intercultural tem vindo a ganhar impulso desde o último período de globalização iniciado há 40 anos, mas a sua relevância não é menor ainda que um período de desglobalização ocorra.
