Abstract:
Doutoramento em Estudos de Desenvolvimento<br>Trade to industry transition in Anambra that began in the 1980s and keeps growing could hold hope for Africa’s increasing population. Pioneer Anambra manufacturers began during post-Civil War recovery after trading and capital accumulation. Years of trade specialization, networking and link with foreign manufacturing firms aided the birth and growth of indigenous manufacturing firms. The business environment has adapted to security, economic and other situations over the years. This thesis is made up of two parts, A and B with three and four chapters, respectively. Related literature employed in the first part of traced the root of a better business environment, trade specialization, big businesses, the effects of the Civil War, public policies and programmes. An ethnographic study that involved a three months field work in Anambra building on the works of previous scholars was carried out to get the current state of the firms. It began with a two weeks pilot study. Afterwards, participant observation, interviews and focus group discussions were employed in getting the data presented in the second part of the thesis. The state of industries in Onitsha shows that some of the first-generation firms have closed. The remaining one has also invested in other businesses across Nigeria and the initial industry is now in its shadows. The second-generation firms have grown and the third are struggling to stand. Though each firm struggles to survive, they support each other by clustering and rare political attention leaves them to fate. Nnewi reveals that some of the manufacturing firms that began in the first industrial wave have closed after infrastructural and macroeconomic issues. Some have divested into other economic ventures and the survivors have grown. Same with those in the second and third industrial waves in Nnewi. The surviving firms presented in the fifth and sixth chapter are actively engaged in the economic, social and political activities in the state. Two interviews conducted with a Civil Servant and Politician are presented in this chapter to get the government’s response to complaint from the private sector. Like multiple taxation which they see as the unwillingness to paying taxes. Anambra state government recently attracted considerable agro-investment in the state. Such is needed in the manufacturing sector to boost the local and regional economy and meet their needs. In this last chapter, the thesis also looks at opportunities provided by formal institutions in Africa that Anambra manufacturing firms can key into to meet the needs of the region and boost intra-regional trade.

Ntube, Emmaneul E. (Emmaneul Emeka). "School Administrators' and Teachers' Perceptions of the Teacher Evaluation System in the State of Anambra, Nigeria." Thesis, North Texas State University, 1986. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc330916/.

Full text
Abstract:
The problem with which this study is concerned is the teacher evaluation system in the state of Anambra, Nigeria. The purposes of this study are (a) to provide objective information concerning the perceptions of school administrators and teachers toward the teacher evaluation system in the State of Anambra, Nigeria, (b) to determine whether agreements or differences exist between teachers' and administrators' perceptions of the teacher evaluation system, and (c) to draw conclusions and make recommendations for improvements based on the perceptions of the teachers and administrators. To accomplish these purposes, questionnaires were distributed to a random sample of 652 administrators and teachers who are currently employed in 37 randomly selected primary and secondary schools in the State of Anambra, Nigeria. Four hundred and sixty school administrators and teachers, representing 70.6 percent of the sample, returned completed usable questionnaires. Part I of the questionnaire was designed to gather relevant demographic data to determine the perceptions of the school administrators and teachers. Part II of the questionnaire contains the components of the evaluation system which were used to measure the perceptions of school administrators and teachers. Analysis of variance was used to test the data according to the independent variables. Three statistically significant differences were found among the data. (a) The primary and secondary school administrators differed significantly in their perceptions of the teacher evaluation system in the State of Anambra. This difference is ascribed to their positions which are based on their educational levels. (b) The demographic variable sex has significant effect on the perceptions of primary and secondary school teachers and administrators towards the teacher evaluation system in the State of Anambra, Nigeria. (c) The demographic variable years of professional experience appears to have a significant impact on the perceptions of the primary and secondary school teachers and administrators toward the teacher evaluation system in use in the State of Anambra, Nigeria.

Nwosu, Mike Chike. "Youth Entrepreneurship Among University Graduates in Anambra State, Nigeria." ScholarWorks, 2019. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/6637.

Full text
Abstract:
Nigerian policy is inconsistent with regard to the promotion of entrepreneurship among young adults in Anambra State that would serve as a guide to becoming self-employed. Most young adults in Anambra State lack information on entrepreneurial characteristics to become self-employed. The issues confronting Anambra State as a result of youth unemployment include increase in crime rate, drug abuse, kidnapping, and suicide rate. Guided by the human capital theory, the purpose of this case study was to explore the entrepreneurship strategies that young adults in Anambra State needed to become self-employed after graduating from universities. Twenty youth entrepreneurs participated in the individual interviews, 5 participated in a focus group, and 5 policymakers participated in another individual interview. Data were coded and analyzed using Yin's 5 step procedure involving compiling, assembling, analysing, dissembling and repeating the entire process three times until the themes emerged. The emerging themes were mentorship, vocational training, and ad-hoc programs. These findings revealed that youth who participated in these programs (mentorship, vocational training and ad-hoc) obtained entrepreneurial strategies and consequently ran more profitable enterprises than those who did not. The implications for positive social change include recommendations to policymakers to expand the mentoring program among young adults and introduce vocational education that could enhance employment rate, thereby improving the standard of living, and create educational programs for university students with the expectation that upon graduation they may be able to develop businesses that may lead to the creation of employment and empower young entrepreneurs towards national growth and development.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study aimed to examine how a company like Anamma creates a platform where people can connect and inspire others to buy vegan food and what strategies they use to do so. The empirical material consisted of eight posts on Instagram made by the Swedish vegan company Anamma. The posts are showing how vegan meals can be healthy, tasteful but also how it is good for the environment. Since the material in these posts were both text, pictures and animated videos a multimodal analysis was most suitable to get a valid and true result. Initially the posts were analyzed one by one. Then we summarized the result into three themes based on what was discovered during the first analysis. The study shows that Anamma is using strategic tools like the theory of Two-step-flow, or Word of mouth to make people hear about them. By using hashtags and tagging people they are creating a chain of equivalence, using the digital platform to spread their message. They also use words like, “together”, “all of us” and “save the planet” et cetera, which is assumed to make people want to be a part of making the world a better place. Also, they frequently use statistics as a strategy of persuasion to show how much less effluent vegan food is to the environment compared to meat. Using the word “Anamma-friends” is a strategy that helps create a strong community for their customers. All their strategies combined contributes to creating social identity and a feeling of belonging. However, this study is not a study of communication effects, since that would require a different approach. Therefore the conclusion of this study is that Anammas communication is effective and adequate towards the social context and can be seen as successful in relation to the purpose of the study.

Johansson, Sara.

Full text
Abstract:
Grit kan definieras som "the disposition to pursue long-term goals with sustained interest and effort over time" (Duckworth et al, 2014, s. 2). Skönlitteraturen innehåller även oväntade och intressanta skildringar av strategier för grit.<br>The purpose of this study is to investigate and create a deeper understanding of how the concept of grit is portrayed as a motif in classical children's literature. Grit can be defined as "the disposition to pursue long-term goals with sustained interest and effort over time" (Duckworth et al, 2014, p. 2). The analysis is, among other things, based on Angela Duckworths theories on grit and Ethan Ris' analysis of the discourse of grit. The study has a perspective of literary sociology and applies the mirror theory, which describes how literature mirrors society. This is a thesis written within the teacher's education and therefore the literary connection between grit and academic studies will be investigated as well. The questions asked are how grit is portrayed in the forming of the characters, and what the connections are between grit, social class and gender in the texts. The classical children's books analyzed are the following: Huckleberry Finn, On the Banks of Plum Creek, A Little Princess and Anna All Alone. The result of the analysis is that the classics have didactic usefulness, both in the school's work with core ethical values and in order to inspire grit. The motif grit seems to appear the most when the characters struggle with poverty and is often portrayed as an exercise of self-control. The fiction also contains unexpected and interesting depictions of strategies for grit.

Abstract:
Research on residents’ perceptions of the socio-cultural issues in tourism development in Southeastern Nigeria are limited. Drawing from collaboration and responsible tourism frameworks, this thesis explores residents’ perceptions of tourism impacts; the resources that could be harnessed; and how to support the responsible development of tourism in the region. Southeastern Nigeria is home to the Igbo tribe, comprising Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo. The thesis focuses on selected clans in Anambra and Enugu States. The discussions are presented from an emic perspective because I am a member of the Igbo society, have acquired western knowledge and am involved in tourism education. This research adopts a qualitative design, and takes an ethnographic approach to understand how participants construct knowledge about socio-cultural issues associated with regional tourism development. Using a purposive sampling technique targeted at people in key positions 216 tourism stakeholders including traditional rulers, men, women and youth representatives, chief priests, security agents and tourism officials were identified to take part in interviews and focus group discussions. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The analysis identified five categories that influenced residents’ perceptions of tourism issues (governance, tourism, religion, community and culture/gender-related attributes). The results showed that whilst tourism is in the exploratory stage, it remains a perceived strategy for community development and cultural revival. The findings also indicated that neo-colonialism, Christianity and culture influence how residents perceived tourism in the area. Some strategies are discussed for addressing the challenges, such as glocalization, decentralizing tourism planning and genuine stakeholder collaboration. The results highlighted issues and strategies that could inform developers on gaining and improving residents’ perceptions in the region. The study confirmed that residents’ perceptions are influenced by destination-specific factors, such as neo-colonialism, the newness of tourism, religion and culture in the Igbo society. Further research is needed to highlight other factors that influence how residents perceive tourism impacts. The purpose of this study is to describe how underlying motives influence the implementation of health-promoting activities and measures. Method: Qualitative study with an inductive approach. The empirical material was col-lected through semi-structured interviews with eleven informants. Conclusion: This study shows that it is difficult to say how organizations underlying motives influence the implementation of health-promoting activities and measures, mainly because of the variety and width of the concept. When organizations offer too much variety in health-promoting activities and measures, it is not possible for us to iden-tify with certainty which motives influence which of the activities and measures.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Motivation is a key factor in sustaining a healthy and active lifestyle, and technology has afforded us new methods for attaining information concerning exercise and health. This paper aims to examine how social media can motivate individuals to obtain and maintain an active and healthy lifestyle, as well as identify which particular social media channels are preferred for this purpose. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used as data collection in this research. The results of this report show that images and text shared on social media, as well as the communication therein, can function as motivation for individuals to commence and maintain a regular physical activity and health regimen. Additionally, an individual’s sharing of their own training and health routine is enough to motivate the person in question to sustain their training and health procedure. Furthermore, this study shows that the preferred social media channels for this purpose are Instagram, personal blogs and Facebook. From this, a conclusion can be drawn that social media can function as a tool for individuals to both initiate and maintain a regular training and health routine.

Full text
Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣大學<br>生醫電子與資訊學研究所<br>105<br>MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small and non-coding RNAs that can regulate gene expression by binding on the 3’UTR of target mRNAs, and also inhibiting mRNAs translating protein, or even promoting mRNAs degradation. In various complex disease and pathological conditions, it is possible to identify dysregulated with causative factors. Therefore, it is an essential approach to explore the interactions between miRNA and gene in certain diseases, such as cancers. However, challenge arises when we are trying to validate the interactions by doing bench experiments. The numbers of miRNA-gene interactions are too large to be validated. Currently, most prediction algorithms only provide their own results and low consistency rates across independent methods have been reported. Consequently, it is necessary to develop a systematic method to perform a comprehensive analysis by using the expression profiles from genes and miRNAs concurrently. To address these issues, a R package named as anamiR was developed. anamiR is able to perform an integrated analysis of mRNA and miRNA with the phenotype information. Two mainly procedures are included. The first one is gGeneral wWorkflow, filtering raw data with statistical test, and comparing the potential miRNA-gene interactions to the embedded databases which contains two validated and eight predicted miRNA-gene databases. To identify potential gene pairs in a specific disease, enrichment analysis based on four pathway databases are applied to obtain putative target genes. For the users who already have interested gene sets or pathways, the other workflow is provided, fFunction dDriven aAnalysis wWorkflow, which allows themus to focus on gene sets in certain diseases , and using embedded databases as well, to identify the miRNA-gene interactions regulating significant term is provided. In summary, the anamiR package provides a comprehensive analysis in expression profiling as well as functional enrichment among miRNAs and their target genes, and is freely available at Bioconductor.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study is to investigate and identify the factors that affect utilisation of prevention mother to child transmission of HIV services and propose measures to promote utilisation of services by HIV positive pregnant women in Onitsha, Anambra State, Nigeria. Mother-to-child transmission of HIV accounts for over 90% of infections in children under 15 years. Infected pregnant women can pass on the infection to their babies during pregnancy, delivery or through breastfeeding. There are effective interventions now reduce of the infection to the baby. However some infected women still do not avail themselves of these services due to several reasons. A quantitative descriptive study, using the Health Belief Model as the conceptual framework was used to conduct the research. A structured interview schedule was used to interview 102 pregnant women at two health facilities in Onitsha, Anambra state, Nigeria. The findings from the study reveal that majority of the respondents knew about HIV transmission but not about ways the infection can be transmitted from mother-to-child. The respondents recognise that HIV/AIDS is a very serious threat in Nigeria and the study site and were of the opinion that all pregnant women should know their HIV status. The attitude of health care workers and fears about disclosure of HIV status to others was a setback. Revealing their status to the spouse was feared.
