Lawrence, John, and Adam Slipinski. Australian Beetles Volume 1. CSIRO Publishing, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643097292.

Full text
Abstract:
This three-volume series represents a comprehensive treatment of the beetles of Australia, a relatively under-studied fauna that includes many unusual and unique lineages found nowhere else on Earth.
Volume 1 contains keys to all 117 beetle families found in Australia, and includes over 1100 illustrations of adults, larvae and anatomical structures. This volume is based in part on Lawrence & Britton’s out-of-print Australian Beetles, but is fully updated and expanded.
The biology and morphology for all major beetle lineages is described and illustrated, along with anatomical terms which clarify the characters and terminology used in the keys; few other resources for beetle identification include such a detailed morphological background. A chapter on the fossil record is also included, and family sections provide full descriptions of adults and larvae, including the world distribution of each family.
The revised identification keys (currently recognised as one of the most valuable keys worldwide) will aid quarantine agents, biologists and students in identifying members of the most species-rich order of animals.

Anderson, Stephen R. ‘Defaults’ and morphological structure. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198712329.003.0011.

Full text
Abstract:
While the other chapters are primarily concerned with the question of how default notions in morphological structure should be expressed, this chapter takes a somewhat different approach, attempting to characterize the notion of morphological ‘default’ from the other direction by investigating the range of phenomena in morphology that deviate from the default and thereby introduce structural complexity. This chapter argues that morphological complexity, the focus of much recent attention, is in fact simply the opposite side of the coin from structural defaults. Accordingly, if we want to understand defaults, we have to study their opposite sides, the sorts of complexity that characterize the morphologies of particular languages.

Full text
Abstract:
Right-sided heart valves are complex anatomical structures. Studies describing the morphological and functional assessment of both valves are lacking. Most echocardiographic modalities provide a qualitative rather than quantitative approach.Echocardiography has a central role in the assessment of tricuspid regurgitation through estimation of severity, understanding the mechanism, assessment of pulmonary artery pressure, evaluation of right ventricular function, guidance towards surgery versus medical therapy, and assessment of valve competence after surgery.Transoesophageal echocardiography is an accurate method providing a qualitative assessment of right-sided heart valves. However, the lack of good validation makes it difficult to recommend its use for a quantitative approach. Hopefully, the future will provide refinements in instrumentation and techniques leading to increased accuracy in reporting and cost-effectiveness in making clinical decisions.
