El período colonial de la Medicina Peruana que imitando, con más voluntad que fortuna, a Unanue, Ulloa, Patrón y otros he pretendido poner en evidencia ante nuestros contemporáneos, ha permanecido tan extraño a nuestra cultura histórica y tan oculto a las curiosidades tibias de los unos y a las tímidas investigaciones de los otros, que no debe extrañarnos la dolorosa unanimidad con la cual aceptamos aún hoy, juzgando con igual criterio injusto, las desautorizadas adjetivaciones de CAVIEDES y las declaraciones, un tanto apasionadas, de informadores extranjeros, como BOTTONI y PETlT. Es indudable que una ignorancia muy grande caracterizaba, en pleno siglo XVIII, al cuerpo médico del virreinato, y ningún hecho más lógico que esa ignorancia, si se recuerda, antes de calificarla duramente, las condiciones en las cuales se formaron los médicos y cirujanos peruanos : la falta de un centro de enseñanza y de maestros preparados para realizarla y aún el egoísmo de prácticos mediocres que, engreídos por triunfos baratos en la práctica civil, contemplando en cada discípulo un probable rival, quizá no caracterizaron sus enseñanzas por la lealtad que debe inspirar toda trasmisión de conocimientos.

Abstract:
La anatomía humana fue el epicentro del saber, quehacer y la educación médica durante finales del siglo XVIII y comienzos del siglo XIX. A este movimiento proveniente de escuelas médicas de París se le denominó el método anatomoclínico y promulgaba la articulación de los signos y síntomas de una patología con los hallazgos o lesiones anatómicas. Lo anterior permitió el auge de los anatomistas y el desarrollo de didácticas en el aprendizaje de la medicina con la disección de cadáveres humanos en los anfiteatros. Investigación, educación y asistencia clínica se realizó por décadas bajo el amparo conceptual de la medicina anatomoclínica. Con el pasar de los años surgió la medicina de laboratorio y otras corrientes como la etiopatológica y la fisiopatológica, las cuales trajeron como consecuencia que el papel de la anatomía dentro de la enseñanza y la práctica clínica fuese modificado. La Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de Cartagena-Colombia recibió influencia de la medicina anatomoclínica por parte de docentes que realizaron sus estudios médicos en escuelas francesas y por la lectura de libros en francés. Una saga de profesores anatomistas se pueden identificar, siendo el doctor Rafael Alvear Terán, el último docente de esa facultad médica, representante de la también llamada mentalidad anatomoclínica. O presente trabalho tem o objetivo de descrever, microscopicamente, o lenho de Maytenus cassineformis Reissek, arvoreta nativa no Rio Grande do Sul. A descrição do lenho foi realizada com base nas normas da Associação Internacional de Anatomistas da Madeira (IAWA). Foram observados: vasos predominantemente solitários e em porosidade difusa; parênquima axial ausente; tecido radial heterogêneo; e fibras septadas e não-septadas. Os caracteres anatômicos são compatíveis com referências da literatura para Celastraceae, com pequenas divergências a nível de gênero.

Abstract:
The iliacus muscle variation and coexisting femoral nerve split were discovered during routine anatomical dissection of iliac fossae in an embalmed cadaver. Careful dissection revealed abnormal branching of the femoral nerve around a muscular slip of iliacus, named iliacus minimus. We reason that the coexistence of a femoral nerve split with aberrant muscular slips increases the chance of nerve compression. The findings reported here support many other cases of unusual femoral nerve branching and highlight the impact on diagnostic testing, imaging, and treatment of pathology within the iliac compartment. Understanding and recognising anatomical variation is critical for medical specialists and educators, particularly anatomists, radiologists, and surgeons in order to improve medical practice;La variación de músculo del ilíaco coexistiendo con la división del nervio femoral fueron descubiertos durante la disección anatómica rutinaria de la Fosa ilíaca en un cadáver fijado. La disección cuidadosa reveló una ramificación anormal del nervio femoral alrededor de una división accesoria del musculo iliaco, llamado iliacus minimus. Razonamos que la coexistencia de una ramificación del nervio femoral con divisiones musculares aberrantes aumenta la posibilidad de compresión del nervio. Los resultados publicados aquí apoyan muchos otros casos de ramificación del nervio femoral inusuales y destacan la relevancia en las pruebas diagnósticas, los métodos por imágenes y el tratamiento de la patología dentro de la fosa iliaca. Comprender y reconocer las variaciones anatómicas son fundamentales para médicos especialistas y docentes, particularmente anatomistas, radiólogos y cirujanos con el fin de mejorar la práctica médica.

Abstract:
A pesquisa da hiperosteose em crânios de índios e mulatos do Sudeste brasileiro, feita pelas autoras, correlaciona as lesões na cálvaria e na órbita. O trabalho soma-se aos inúmeros estudos publicados por anatomistas, antropólogos físicos, médicos e paleopatologistas que consideram a hiperosteose porosa como marcador de estresse biológico, decorrente de anemias de origens várias. A análise macroscópica da hiperosteose na órbita e na calvária foi feita numa amostra de 409 indivíduos (141 índios e 268 mulatos), distribuídos em grupos de idade e sexo. A correlação entre as lesões nos dois grupos, distintos e distanciados do pontos de vista racial, cultural e temporal, foi feita sob perspectivas antropológicas. Considerou-se também, na produção desta patologia, a complexa interação dos fatores biossocial e ambiental.

Abstract:
O desenvolvimento da patologia, uma das ciências médicas mais antigas e consolidadas, tem cerca de sete séculos. Essa longa jornada iniciou com os grandes anatomistas. Toda a evolução da medicina na idade média esteve associada ao conhecimento gerado pelas autopsias, chamada na época de anatomia mórbida. O advento da patologia celular, no final do século XIX, mudou totalmente a classificação das neoplasias e permitiu o desenvolvimento da patologia cirúrgica. O advento dos biomarcadores permitiu uma grande mudança, passando dos diagnósticos axiomáticos para diagnósticos baseados em evidências de expressão proteica, análise de transcritos de RNA e alterações na sequência de DNA. O advento da patologia molecular, já no século XXI, transforma novamente a patologia e cria o desafio da formação da nova geração de patologistas. O presente artigo analisa de forma resumida o caminho trilhado pela patologia em seu desenvolvimento ao longo desses 700 anos.

Syftet med studien är att studera normala variationer i suralisnervens anatomi och utifrån detfastställa lämpligaste metoden för neurografi i kliniskt bruk. Vidare vill jag genom studien fåsvar på hur ålder och kroppslängd påverkar suralis sensoriska nerv aktion potential (SNAP)amplituden hos män och kvinnor, hur stimuleringslokationen påverka mätvärdena föramplitud och fortledningshastighet samt hur temperaturen påverkar fortledningshastigheten.Suralisnerven (SN) är den mest studerande sensoriska nerven i nedre extremiteterna hospatienter med perifer neuropati. Nervledningsstudier av SN är ett viktigt diagnostiskt verktygvid både axonal och demyeliniserande form av neuropatier. Det finns en stor spridning avnormalvärdena för SN eftersom den påverkas av olika parameter som ålder, kroppslängd ochhudtemperatur. SN är dessutom känd för sin anatomiska variation som gör att resultatetfeltolkas på grund av minskad eller frånvarande (SNAP).Fyrtio friska frivilliga personer deltog i studien. Medelålder för kvinnor var 47 (intervall 22-64) och 42 (intervall 25-54) för män. Nerven stimulerades från ett antal fördefinierade punkterpå distala halvan av vaden: medialt 14,12 och 10 cm från registretingselektroden och 2 cmlateralt från utgångspunkterna. Registrering utfördes från SN vid laterala malleolen.Studien kunde visa att SN amplitud påverkas av parameter som ålder, kön, kroppslängd ochtemperatur. Den största SNAP- amplituden registrerades från stimuleringsavstånd 10 cmmedialt och lateralt. Stimulering medialt gav större svar än stimulering lateralt.Parametrar som temperatur, ålder längd och köns påverkar normala variationer bland normalapatienter i nervledningsstudier. Studien visar att låga temperaturer ger minskadfortledningshastighet medan amplitudsvar ökar. Det är säkrare att stimulera nerven frånavstånd 10 cm medialt då risken för falskt positivt svar minimeras jämfört med avstånd 14cm. Det är viktigt att känna till suralisnervens anatomiska variationer inför mätningar vidundersökning av polyneuropati, eftersom resultaten annars kan misstolkas.

Abstract:
The thesis explores the way in which anatomical discussion of the human body in the period c.1570-c.1680 informs a range of 16th and 17th century poetic texts. It begins with an account of the study of anatomy in England in the years between the publication of Vesalius' observations of the body and the appearance of Harvey's ideas on the circulation of the blood in 1628, and argues that the language, the religious significance, the practice, and the patterns of symbolism in the Renaissance anatomy lesson were all factors which were well understood by poets as diverse as Spenser, Sir John Davies, John Davies of Hereford, and, above all, Donne. The style of enquiry which was fostered by anatomists, and in particular the methodological problems associated with the dissection of the human body, are traced in anatomical text-books of the period, in theological writing, and in the work of the "Encyclopaedic" authors of the 16th century: Ambroise Paré, Phillipe de Mornay, and Pierre de la Primaudaye. The poetry of Phineas Fletcher, in particular his epic poem The Purple Island (1633), represents the climax of this conjunction between anatomical and poetic discourse. An extended discussion of this poem shows it to be an attempt at transforming the language and practice of anatomy into a means of expressing religious, political, and methodological confrontation. Fletcher's poem can be understood not as an incongruous fusion of poetry and science, but as an extended rehearsal of a well-established tradition of poetic accounts of the body discernable in the writings of Spenser and Donne, and in the poetic anatomization found in Sylvester's translation of the Divine Weekes of Du Bartas. Fletcher's poem is, however, virtually the last attempt at exploring this tradition. With the single exception of Joseph Beaumont's Psyche (1648), which is discussed in relation to The Purple Island, the history of anatomy and poetry is now one of disjunction. This theme is considered in the second half of the thesis. The replacement of intellectual systems of enquiry based on an understanding of "correspondence" by "mechanistic" accounts of the body is held to be at the root of the fracture between anatomists and poets. The language of figures such as Ross, Van Helmont, Harvey, Willis, Collins, and Charleton, together with the work of the theoreticians of language associated with the early years of The Royal Society, are compared to older styles of anatomic writing to reveal poetic accounts of the human body to be indebted to increasingly anachronistic images and ideas. After Harvey's work has become generally known in England it appears that poets such as Thomas Randolph, Margaret Cavendish, and John Collop resort to a language which is no longer the shared preserve of the scientist and the poet. This break-down of shared assumptions results in the transfer of attention, on the part of the poets, from the body itself to the scientist who explores the body. In the writings of Cowley, Dryden, and Jane Barker, the scientist emerges as a central figure. Imagined as a new Apollo, a heroic discoverer, his strangest transformation is that whereby he is imagined as the microcosmic voyager and narrator of the body. The displacement of the body from poetry is, however, challenged in the writings of Thomas Traherne. The final chapter of the thesis (which functions as a conclusion to the study as a whole) argues that, in Traherne's poetry and prose, an attempt at synthesizing the poetic and the scientific understanding of the body is discernable. Traherne's writings are discussed in the context of both the Royal Society's pronouncements on language and the work of the group with which he has been most closely'associated - the Cambridge Platonists. What is revealed is that Traherne is not (as has often been claimed) an Intellectual "conservative", but rather he asserts the view that fideism and rationalism can be harmonized under a system in which the anatomist and the poet once more share a common task.

Abstract:
This thesis reassesses the workings of the Anatomy Act (1832) in East Anglia throughout the nineteenth century. Underpinning the practice of medical education was the need to acquire human corpses to permit the essential study of anatomy. Over the course of the century the source of anatomical material moved from bodies taken from their graves by bodysnatchers to unclaimed pauper corpses from workhouses and hospitals to the increasing use of the cadavers of lunatics from the vast Victorian asylums. The accepted view of the Anatomy Act is that it stopped bodysnatching but failed to ensure a plentiful supply of cadavers. Whilst recent research has largely focused on specific changes in Poor Law legislation or the impact of the reorganisation of medical curricula on the supply of corpses, this study widens the debate by identifying seven groups; bodysnatchers, teachers of anatomy, medical students, inspectors of anatomy, paupers, guardians and those who elected them to office and examines their respective parts in attempting to solve the perennial problem of the shortage of corpses for dissection. The shifting locus of power between the groups is examined with reference to external changes which were brought to bear on their relationships. Cambridge Medical School is used as a case study to highlight the difficulties provincial schools experienced in obtaining dissection material and to indicate how, in this particular case, they were solved by the actions of determined individuals resulting in Cambridge becoming one of the most successful medical schools in the country by the end of the nineteenth century. This research contributes to the small, but growing, number of regional studies which are necessary to enable us to gain an overview of the effect of the Anatomy Act on the study of medicine across Britain in the nineteenth century.

Cláudio Antonio Ferraz de Carvalho é médico e Doutor pela Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (FMUSP). Adquiriu seus conhecimentos anatômicos convivendo com Renato Locchi e Odorico Machado de Sousa, consagrados anatomistas e discípulos de Afonso Bovero. Contratado como docente do Departamento de Anatomia da FMUSP foi orientado pelo professor Odorico que, com auxílio financeiro da Fundação Humboldt enviou-o para a realização de um estágio na Alemanha no Instituto Anatômico de Kiel, sob a tutela de Wolfgang Bargmann, discípulo de Alfred Benninghoff, um dos fundadores da Anatomia Funcional da Escola Alemã, quando se especializou na Anatomia Funcional de Conotação Secretória Celular e Subcelular. Em um novo estágio, agora no Instituto de Anatomia da Universidade de Mainz, coordenado por Adolf Dabelow, um discípulo de Alfred Benninghoff, obteve fundamentos sólidos para o desenvolvimento da Anatomia Funcional de Conotação Mecânica. Como resultado dessas experiências desenvolveu diversos trabalhos no âmbito da Anatomia Funcional, tornando-se o principal representante dessa vertente no Brasil, uma ciência de cunho dinâmico, que visa estabelecer a relação entre a estrutura e a sua função sem, contudo, enveredar para o campo da Fisiologia. A apresentação de sua trajetória científica na Universidade de São Paulo serve não somente para reverenciar-lhe o trabalho pioneiro, mas principalmente para infundir naqueles que se dedicam ao estudo da Anatomia, os fundamentos da Anatomia Funcional de conotação mecânica e secretória, como um campo ainda a ser explorado, utilizando-se de metodologias modernas, como por exemplo, a imagiologia e a biologia molecular.
Cláudio Antonio Ferraz de Carvalho is M.D and PhD from the Faculty of Medicine of Universidade de São Paulo (FMUSP), acquired his knowledge of anatomy a close relationship with Renato Locchi and Odorico Machado de Sousa, who were Afonso Boveros devoted disciples. After being hired by FMUSP, he was supervised in his graduate studies by Professor Odorico. Obtain financial assistance from the Humboldt Foundation, this sponsorship allowed him to carry out an internship in Germany at the Anatomical Institute of Kiel, under the tutelage of Wolfgang Bargmann, disciple of Alfred Benninghoffs a founder of Functional Anatomy of the German School, where he specialized in \"Functional Anatomy of cellular and subcellular secretory connotation\". In a new stage, now the Institute of Anatomy at the University of Mainz, coordinated by Adolf Dabelow, a disciple of Benninghoffs, got solid foundation for the development of \"mechanical Functional Anatomy.\" As a result of these experiences and his innate designer skills developed several studies within Functional Anatomy, becoming the main representative of this aspect of Anatomy in our midst, a dynamic nature science, which aims to establish the relationship between structure and their functions without, however, going down to the field of Physiology. The review of his scientific career in Universidade de São Paulo serves not only to honor his pioneering work, but mainly to infuse those who are dedicated to the study of anatomy, the Functional Anatomy of grounds both \"mechanically\" as the \"secretory base\" such as an even field to be explored, using modern technologies, such as imaging and molecular biology.

Background: Vitrectomy is a well-accomplished method for treatment of vitreomacular traction. In 2013, a new approach for treating symptomatic vitreomacular traction was presented, ocriplasmin (Jetrea®), that could perform enzymatic vitreolysis. In this study ocriplasmin was studied to compare the treatment results with the standard method vitrectomy. Aim: The purpose of this study was to compare vitrectomy to ocriplasmin-injection for treatment of vitreomacular traction performed between 2013 and 2016. Materials and methods: The medical records of 16 patients were reviewed. Eight of them were treated with ocriplasmin and the other eight underwent vitrectomy due to vitreomacular traction. All patients who received ocriplasmin at the clinic were included, and vitrectomy-patients were matched to these according to sex, age and visual acuity. Preoperative and postoperative symptoms, visual acuity and optical coherence tomography findings were analyzed. Results: Vitreomacular traction resolved in every eye treated with vitrectomy compared to four of eight eyes treated with ocriplasmin. With one exception, every patient´s visual acuity in the vitrectomy group improved, with a mean value of +0,223 Snellen. Three of eight patients in the ocriplasmin group had improved visual acuity, while three worsened and two remained the same. Visual acuity in this group altered with a mean value of +0,071 Snellen. Conclusions: Enzymatic vitreolysis is a good idea, but according to our and other international studies, it only achieves good results in half of the cases, while vitrectomy almost always succeeds. Although vitrectomy can lead to certain complications, for example cataract, it is a well functioning and relatively moderate surgical procedure and its complications can be managed.

Abstract:
This paper reviews a study of the skulls from the anatomy collection at Gustavianum, Uppsala university museum, historical collections in Uppsala, Sweden. The skulls were found in the central parts of Uppsala, on an area called Östra Ågatan, which is known for being one of the oldest parts in town. The skulls have been dated to medieval period between 11th and 14th centrury and came to be a part of the anatomical collection. Only skulls are available today in the big collection.  Cranial metrics were recorded, probably by the Anatomical department for all skulls in the large anatomical collection. Östra Ågatan is today a road located near Fyrisån, a river that flows through the city. Uppsala is well known for being one of the oldest city in Sweden and Europe. People have lived here for several centuries, and today the area are currently being used the same. The study aims to collect information about the health status on the medieval humans living in Uppsala. Also, to see if the skulls had a connection to the nearby churches that were located near the area under the same period. Questions that the study are examining is, -If the skulls have any connection to a church in the nearby area that they were found in? -Do the skulls have any pathologies, non-metric features or damage?

Abstract:
This thesis investigates a part of the material culture of higher education through an object biographical case study of Félix Thibert’s moulages. The object biography operates with a diachronic perspective that offers an object-centered historiography of university collections, revealing that the need for collecting and imaging in science consistently remains, even though the role and significance of pathological moulages in research and education have changed over time. The moulages are epistemic things as described by Hans-Jörg Rheinberger. They embody what we do not yet know and they become marginalized when no one expects them to generate new discoveries. Their ontology and function are dependent on the dominating epistemic culture. John V. Pickstone outlines three ways of knowing, which gradually have dominated since the Renaissance: natural history, analysis and experiment. Thibert’s moulages are clearly anchored in analysis as a way of knowing for which the museum is an important arena. The findings of this thesis show that university museums and their collections were of immense importance for the production of knowledge during the 19th century, while today they often fall short of their knowledge-generating potential. There are nevertheless methods that can help them reach their full potential, among them a displaying method proposed by Karin Tybjerg considered in this thesis and the object biography of which this thesis consists. This is a two-year master’s thesis in Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies.
