Abstract:
This paper consists of the study of three of the most successful and widely known authors of Chicano Literature: Miguel Mendez, Rolando Hinojosa-Smith and Rudolfo Anaya. The theoretical principles on which this analysis is based correspond to the fields of linguistics and narratology. The first part of the study deals with the language choice process related to each of the three writers. The second part of the analysis was carried out by transferring results obtained from the study of live speech to the literary texts. These two different levels of language were confronted in order to verify if any correspondence among them exists.

Full text
Abstract:
The origin of this research lies on the desire to interrogate the way in which the pedagogic renewal movement is experienced, both singularly and collectively, as a self-organised and autonomous teachers’ training space. Its aim is to focus on how the political practice of the permanent organization of this social experience is lived and re-created. How it is experienced and how it is told; as the meaning of who we are and what we are depends on the stories we tell and are told. There we can find meaningful aspects of what it is, what it was and what may be the MRP as the political place to put relationship and thought into practice. This research stems from the idea that a social experience such as the MRP’s, i.e. the experience of a group of teachers who decided to improve their teaching practice and change the school pedagogy, is a valuable one, which deserves to be thought over. After more than thirty years, the MRP still vindicates itself as the privileged place where a set of teachers articulate a global response to both the social and educational models. The present research starts from this statement but intends not to stop at it. The discoursive practice shows a unitary and compact subject that moves within the politics of representation and from the assertive discourse of identity, ensuring the quality of the constituent organization relationship, where political and pedagogical action takes place. This discourse logic goes beyond the idea of a teacher as someone to whom things happen as long as he/she is committed to pedagogical renewal activities. And it is also surpassed the fact that every collective subject who thinks, speaks or acts, only exists as long as someone supports it.

Abstract:
I consider my one act opera Anya 17 to be a summation of my compositional work so far, as well as a new direction in my output. It brings together my concerns with drama, musical structure and collaboration, and the issues of writing an operatic work in the present century. The opera, which lasts just under 70 minutes is the main work of this thesis, was written with the librettist Ben Kaye and is set in the present day. The subject of Anya 17 is drawn from films dealing with sex trafficking between Eastern and Western Europe. As well as an analysis of the work I have outlined the practical issues of writing an opera from start to finish. A short piece Dancing in the Ghetto is also included, as this provided a good deal of the material for the opera as well as giving an example of writing on a smaller scale. I have included another large scale work, an oratorio for chorus and Wind Ensemble Eternal Voices, also in collaboration with Ben Kaye, and also dealing with a contemporary issue; that of War in the 21st century.

Abstract: Population studies developed in São Paulo and Panama showed striking differences in the main regulating factors of the continuously breeding tropical butterfly Anaea ryphea. The butterfly occurs from southern Brazil to Mexico, and uses different primary larval food plants in different regions: Croton floribundus at Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil and Croton billbergianus at La Galeta, Colón, Panama. To evaluate larval mortality, I marked individual food plants, censused mapped eggs and larvae at intervals and analyzed mortality data for factors correlated with duration of life cycle, feeding behavior and known sources of mortality. Three years of data from southeastern Brazil showed that: a) The populations of immatures are highly seasonal, with high densities, occurring from approximately November to May (late spring to mid-autumn), with a peak within this period and a reproductive hiatus during winter (dry season). At the Panama site, the species occurred at low densities from approximately August to December, but with no clear peak. b) The time and amplitude of the peak at Campinas vary from year to year. c) Rainfall seems to act as the main factor promoting seasonal differences in mortality of first and second instar larvae, and together with seasonality it influences host plant quality. Life-table k-values suggest that predation (not actually observed) and parasitism (of eggs by trichogrammatid wasps and of fourth instar larvae by braconid wasps) play important roles in the density variation within the seasons. In Panama the k-values are high and similar for all instars, perhaps due to increased predation. Also severe rain storms during the rainy season may help keep densities low (because of mechanical mortality). Diminishing rainfall allows the increase of the population in October. d) A high percentage of eggs disappear at both places, but in Panama it is 50% higher. The percentage of non-fertile and parasitized eggs, on the other hand, is higher in Campinas. The proportion of hatched eggs, as a consequence, is 50% the value of Panama. No parasitism of larvae by Braconidae wasps was observed in Panama, while at Campinas it is the main mortality factor for 4th instar larvae. e) The mortality factors acting on the populations did not show any density-dependence with the present data. The life cycle of the butterfly has the same characteristics in each locality, differing mainly in the duration of the stages, due to low temperatures, and in the wing patterns of the males

Abstract:
This study investigates the petrographical and chemical characteristics of a group of Zeuxippus Ware Related Ceramics dating to the late 12th-13th centuries from Kusadasi Kadikalesi/Anaia. Kadikalesi was a Byzantine fortress at the coast of Aegean Sea. It was also a significant commercial port and an episcopacy center during the 13th century. In this study, visual classifications of the ceramics were carried out based on their stylistic properties. Then, ceramic samples were investigated by several methods including mineralogical, micromorphological, chemical (SEM-EDX, ICP-OES, ICP-MS) and Raman Spectrometry techniques and further evaluated by statistical analyses. Bodies are found to be rich in SiO2 and Al2O3 while relatively high amounts of Fe2O3 measured, agree well with their reddish bodies. These bodies mostly display micaceous matrix with a relatively low degree of vitrification. Cluster analysis performed among thirty selected samples, points out the presence of two main groups. Observed slip layers are also found to be rich in SiO2 and Al2O3 contents and exhibit various types of crystalline and/or vitreous matrix. Glazes are found to be high lead glazes processed at or below. The glazes are found to be high lead glazes processed at or below 700°
C as confirmed by SEM-EDX and Raman spectrometry investigations. Iron compounds are the major coloring agents for most of the glazes analyzed regardless of their observed colors. Presence of Raman peaks in some yellow glazes which may be assigned to a solid solution of Naples yellow type of pigment is significant since its use in the Byzantine period as a glaze pigment has been scarcely reported before.

Abstract:
Mannu Bhandari is a critically-acclaimed author in contemporary India. The two stories from Trishanku Aur Anya Kahaniyam (Trishanku and Other Stories), "Trishanku" and "Darar Bharne Ki Darar" ("The Rift of Filling in the Rift"), are presented translated from the original Hindi into English. These stories, written from the viewpoint of adolescent female narrators, explore the concept of rebelling against long-established tradition in India, seen from the standpoint of young persons seeking maturity. Each contains a 'story within a story' wherein a marriage is highlighted: one a non-traditional 'love-marriage,' and the other a traditional, arranged marriage which is unhappy. In addition, there is a commentary in which facets of Mannu Bhandari's literary skill and implications of the above-mentioned themes are considered, and various problems of translating from the Hindi language into English while trying to do justice to a consummate artist are discussed.

Full text
Abstract:
The ethnohistory of Anaa, an atoll located in the western part of Tuamotu archipelago in eastern Polynesia, describes the ancient society before evangelism. The first shows the features and the uniqueness of the Anaan ancient society, through the analysis of a traditional corpus of Paea a Avehe (an indgenous born in 1889) which provides unpublished data (myths, sacred songs, genealogies, place names. . . ) collected by F. Stimson in the thirties. The past of the Tuamotuan islands is relatively obscure. This study shows in three parts the traditional use of the atoll resources, the ancient social organization features and some aspects of the tuamotuan ancient beliefs. Continuum between past and present is related to the actual knowledge of the Anaan community and the archaeological stones remains discovered through the analysis of place names. The second part of his work is in a diachronic perspective. The reconstruction of the past of the Anaan community within its former language and its ideology promoted by traditions, shows its peculiar and eminent function through the history of the archipelago. The study of historical heroes and the islands networks shows that the relationships fluctuate between war and alliance

Abstract: In the 20th century, with the sprouting of laboratory animal science, it became undeniable that the quality of the experimentation animal exerts direct influence on the research quality. The model' s health is one of the variables that more direct1y defines its quality. It's up to the researcher to validate the results of his work and for that it is necessary to have full knowledge about the parasites that could affect the laboratory animal colonies, with the purpose of vigilance and control, minimizing the interferences in the experimental results. The present work produced a data compilation on the main parasites of laboratory mice, aiming at the creation of a study source for researchers, technicians and students. Recognizing that the traditional teaching in Parasitology confers some specific difficulties to the student and to the teacher, demanding abstraction moments of both parts, the present work deals with the development of a software that functions as auxiliary tool to the teacher, from which it is possible to bring to the student a global and articulated vision of the studied dynamic phenomena. Graphical animations in three-dimensional environment have been created, illustrating the life cyc1e or morphology of the parasites: Cryptosporidium parvum and C. muris, Giardia muris, Tritrichomonas muris, Spironucleus muris, Syphacia obvelata, Myocoptes musculinus and Myobia musculi. The description of the created software, its evaluation and use perspectives are presented here

Nava, Tomas Hidalgo. "Through the Eyes of Shamans: Childhood and the Construction of Identity in Rosario Castellanos' "Balun-Canan" and Rudolfo Anaya's "Bless Me, Ultima"." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2004. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/146.

Full text
Abstract:
This study offers a comparative analysis of Rosario Castellanos' Balún-Canán and Rudolfo Anaya's Bless Me, Ultima, novels that provide examples on how children construct their identity in hybrid communities in southeastern Mexico and the U.S. southwest. The protagonists grow and develop in a context where they need to build bridges between their European and Amerindian roots in the middle of external influences that complicate the construction of a new mestizo consciousness. In order to attain that consciousness and free themselves from their divided selves, these children receive the aid of an indigenous mentor who teaches them how to establish a dialogue with their past, nature, and their social reality. The protagonists undertake that negotiation by transgressing the rituals of a society immersed in colonial dual thinking. They also create mechanisms to re-interpret their past and tradition in order to create an image of themselves that is not imposed by the status quo. In both novels, the protagonists have to undergo similar processes to overcome their identity crises, including transculturation, the creation of sites of memory, and a transition from orality to writing. Each of them resorts to creative writing and becomes a sort of shaman who pulls together the "spirits" from the past, selects them, and organizes them in a narration of childhood that is undertaken from adulthood. The results of this enterprise are completely different in the cases of both protagonists because the historical and social contexts vary. The boy in Bless Me, Ultima can harmoniously gather the elements to construct his identity, while the girl in Balún-Canán fails because of the pressures of a male-centered and highly racist society.

This Dissertation explores the metaphor of Ariadne’s thread in terms of interconnection, when an element from the everyday is used as a locus linking broader concepts of time and space. Such experiences and associations are reflected in the work of Louise Bourgeois, Eva Hesse, Doris Salcedo, Lucio Fontana, Richard Tuttle, Mona Hatoum, Simone Mangos, Anya Gallaccio and Yoshihiro Suda. In relation to my own work, the metaphor of interconnecting thread allows a sense of freedom and journey of discovery. My studio and related research are closely aligned in developing my understanding of interconnection, through my studio process of making and continuing experiences of looking at and interpreting others artists’ work.

From Bless Me, Ultima, I would like to present two major themes. First of all, it is the spiritual odyssey of the protagonist, Antonio. Second, my contention will move to Antonio’s psychological development, which is much under his Chicano cultural influences, and further on to his responding strategies. Basically, my emphasis will be laid on his gradual realization of his ethnic identity, regarding to the development of his personality. From the text, my task is to trace Antonio’s process of identification with his Chicano peers. I would apply to my discussion of the Chicano cultural background the idea of “mestizaje,” which is unique and evolved by Chicanos themselves. Such an unusual living condition creates a great degree of ambiguity and dilemma, but otherwise, Chicanos in response come out with their own strategy, which is called by Gloria Anzaldua “the borderland consciousness.” This notion largely draws from the dynamics and fluidity of their political status. On the other hand, Bless Me, Ultima is inserted greatly with indigenous Chicano/Indian folklore and legends. As far as Antonio’s ethnic consciousness is concerned, these myths contain a great importance. Whereas, this mythic aspect also tends to draw for the text negative criticism and hence the story is degraded as mere ethnography. From this discrepancy, I would lead my discussion of the novel further to the relation between ethnic history and contemporarity. In the text, these two units exist in a supplementary form, instead of being conflicting. In addition, the text is also inserted with a long sequence of dramatic dreams. I would like to discuss how these dreams affect the overall structure of the book and their relation to Antonio’s personality development.

"Fledglings of Anana." Master's thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.15866.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: The Fledglings of Anani is a universe with an underlying organizing principle of desire, auspiciousness and serendipity, the veiled doors and windows of these realms serve as fugues bridging layers of time leading us through myth and landscape intimately tied to the physical intelligence of earth and character of place. It is a voice that comes to know itself first as being, then in correspondence to nature and her elements, enters into the rhythm of human connection and ultimately circles back to comprehend itself as all these things, varying only in degree. The poems travel further and further toward an allusive center with a contemplative inner eye that embraces the complexity and vitality of life.

Belyaev, Alexey. "Application of PV panels into electricity generation system of compression stations in gas transporting systems." Thesis, 2013. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-127868.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis deals with problems of electricity generation and saving at compression stations of magistral gas transporting pipelines in Russia. Russia is a biggest country in the world which faces set of challenges like transporting gas in European part from far North. Average gas travel distance in Russia is over 4000 km which means huge energy demand for transportation. Permanent availability of energy at compression stations is the key for stabile operation of gas transporting system. For satisfying those needs external sources of electricity used, or part of the transported gas used on special “self needs electricity stations” for electricity production. In 2012 in Russia about 655 bln m3 of gas were produced. About 10% of that number doesn’t come to consumer, because this amount spent for gas transport needs (biggest share is electricity production).  It is obvious, that in order to increase income, company should work on transport cost decreasing and on cheap electricity production. Even 10% decrease in transport costs can give economy in about 6-7 bln m3, which is bigger that production of many countries. In this thesis pipeline systems efficiency and reliability, gas turbines in Russian pipeline systems considered. Analysis of renewable energy included and propositions for reconstruction of CS “Russkaya” with help of PV panels for electricity generation and gas usage decreasing included. Also, economical calculations and sensitivity analysis and technological calculation of PV panels installed included. Finally, proposition in area of principal construction of PV panels in hard relief situations on the Black Sea Russian shore included.
