Learning probabilistic context-free grammars (PCFGs) from strings is a classic problem in computational linguistics since Horning ( 1969 ). Here we present an algorithm based on distributional learning that is a consistent estimator for a large class of PCFGs that satisfy certain natural conditions including being anchored (Stratos et al., 2016 ). We proceed via a reparameterization of (top–down) PCFGs that we call a bottom–up weighted context-free grammar. We show that if the grammar is anchored and satisfies additional restrictions on its ambiguity, then the parameters can be directly relate

AbstractThis chapter seeks to illustrate a comprehension-based learning approach focused on multiplication. We use episodes to show the potential of a teaching design of multiplication focused on the development of mental calculation based on tasks with appropriate contexts and calculations anchored in the use of benchmark numbers and operation properties, with examples to explain the ideas that are introduced. They are based on a collaborative work experience between a third-grade primary teacher and a researcher (the first author of this chapter). Using these specific examples, we discuss mathematical ideas and didactic options that can guide the actions of teachers when teaching multiplication. Finally, we discuss some points of convergence between the approach introduced here and the lesson study approach.

AbstractEntrepreneurship is a future skill that is of central importance for modern societies and economies. It has been recommended that Entrepreneurship Education, when defined as the scientifically founded discussion around the questions about how a central, lifelong, cross-sectional competence in entrepreneurship can be promoted, should be anchored early on in the socialization of learners, namely in schools as an essential educational practice. However, Entrepreneurship Education in Germany has not yet been implemented across the board and is still not mandatory in schools. This chapter illustrates how entrepreneurship, initiative, courage, and trust can be sparked in young people in Germany by using project-based learning as entrepreneurship education instead of project-based learning in entrepreneurship education. A concrete empirical example below of a school education initiative shows how this could be realized.

Abstract Mendlinger looks at the ethnically pluralistic society of Israel to explore how young women acquire the knowledge informing their health behaviors including those related to menstruation. Beginning with the origin story of her research agenda at a time of mass immigration to Israel, she then offers the main findings from 48 in-depth interviews with mothers and daughters that fall into several categories of mother-and-daughter dyads: native-born Israelis and those composed of immigrants from North Africa, Europe, the Former Soviet Union (FSU), United States or Canada, and Ethiopia, each bringing traditional knowledge and practices to bear on what it means to menstruate. Mendlinger’s work, anchored by the voices of women, vividly demonstrates that four types of knowledge: traditional, embodied, technical, and authoritative that are passed generationally from mother to daughter change through the immigration process.

In this work, we explore task-imbalanced continual learning (TICL) scenarios where the distribution of task data is non-uniform across the whole learning process. We find that imbalanced tasks significantly challenge the capability of models to control the trade-off between stability and plasticity from the perspective of recent prompt-based continual learning methods. Abstract:
