The paper evaluates works of ancient authors who mention and provide details of the burial of fallen soldiers in ancient Greece, and then it compares them with preserved archaeological finds. Textual analysis shows a long-term tradition of war graves on battlefields. The commanders of the troops provided funeral services in the first place, as the extradition request of bodies was equal to the recognition of defeat. In most cases both sides had enough time to take care of their fallen after the battle, but there were exceptions when the last honors were rather provisional. In addition to buria

Abstract: In The Human Stain (2000), Philip Roth develops a concern that animates his canon: the potentials and dangers of our most human trait—our capacity to fire back and forth words and letters. For Coleman Silk, in the world of Athena College—just as in ancient Athens—the battle of words in the forum becomes as dangerous as the battle of swords on the Homeric battlefield, and a mission of Roth in this novel, as in other works, is to turn logomachy into self-reflective art about the violence and corruption of the word in the American city-state.

Although mechanisms of modern military wounding may be distinct from those of ancient conflicts, the infectious sequelae of ballistic trauma and the evolving microbial flora of war wounds remain a considerable burden on both the injured combatant and their deployed medical systems. Battlefield surgeons of ancient times favoured suppuration in war wounding and as such Galenic encouragement of pus formation would hinder progress in wound care for centuries. Napoleonic surgeons eventually abandoned this mantra, embracing radical surgical intervention, primarily by amputation, to prevent infection
