Abstract:
How can material artifacts help illuminate the religious lives of women in antiquity? In what ways do archaeological and art historical studies recover women’s religious perspectives and experiences that the literary record misses or underrepresents? The authors of the essays in this volume set out to answer such questions in fascinating, new case studies of women and ancient religions in the Near East and Mediterranean world. They cover a broad historical, geographic, and religious spectrum as they explore women’s lives from the time of ancient Egypt in the second millennium BCE into the earl

Abstract:
For Urfalli Suryanis, an ethno-religious migrant community from Turkish Urfa/Edessa, chant is of paramount importance. Using Syriac, the fugitive Christians who escaped post-WWI persecution continue to practise this ancient oral musical tradition in their new home in Syria. This minority group has a communally agreed conception of identity that should be understood in its proper set of terms. Their conception of Suryaniness may best be seen through particular chants from the Edessan school of Syriac chant they practice in St. George’s Syrian Orthodox Church of Aleppo. Abstract:
The freedom of will problem is one of the great philosophical controversies. This particularly applies whenever ideological or religious assumptions guide the discussion. Following the concept of the series “Orient and Occident”, this volume focusses on the presentation of the ancient heritage (Aristotle, Cicero, Epictetus) and its methodical as well as conceptual discussion, critical integration and transformation through Syriac-Christian and Arab Islamic thinkers of the Middle Ages. Contributions to the introduction to the question of freedom of the will, to the anti-Christian perspectivatio

Abstract:
The product of 35 senior scholars' research, these volumes examine the psychology driving the religious, political, and economic forces that cause turbulence and violence in human society. Religious, political, and economic revolts have defined the human experience throughout history. These kinds of universal turbulence continue to be the dominate source of human suffering and perplexity during the first decade of the 21st century. What can intensive study of the psychodynamics of cultural and social eruptions tell us that may serve to move cultures around the world beyond ongoing strife? This

Abstract:
The Apocrypha or deuterocanonical texts of the Bible were Jewish texts that were included in Christian Old Testaments over and above the books of the Jewish Bible, although in the ancient period both the Jewish canon and the Bibles of the various Christian churches were in flux. Thus the authority of these extra books, as well as the decision about which books would be so included, has also varied enormously. The Apocrypha have been continuously debated by Christian authors over the centuries, and Jewish authors from the Middle Ages on have re-introduced some of the books of the Apocrypha into
