Abstract:
The field of pharmacogenetics has grown rapidly over the last few years yet, with a couple of exceptions, pharmacogenetic diagnostics are not yet used in a clinical setting. Progress in the field is discussed and the current state of pharmacogenetic research is assessed in a literature review. This thesis describes studies to investigate the pharmacogenetics of the anti-epileptic drugs phenytoin, carbamazepine and levetiracetam, using data obtained from the routine clinical use of these drugs, and the pharmacogenetics of the beta-blocker bucindolol in a clinical trial setting. Abstract:
Goodpasture's disease is a well described autoimmune disorder characterised by rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis and pulmonary haemorrhage. The antigen had been identified as the carboxyl terminal of the non-collagenous domain of the α3 chain of type IV collagen, α3(IV)NC1. This has been successfully expressed as a recombinant minichain construct in insect cells. This project investigates ways in improving the production and purity of the recombinant antigen as well as probing possible clinical uses for the recombinant product, rAg. A minichain construct expressing α4(IV)NC1 was developed

Abstract:
Current monitoring tools in the intensive care units focus on displaying physiologically monitored parameters (e.g. vital signs such as heart rate, respiratory rate and blood pressure) at the present moment. Added clinical utility can be found by analyzing how the conditions of a patient evolve with time, and automatically relating that dynamics to population trends. Variability analysis consists of monitoring patterns of variation over intervals in time of physiological signals such as heart rate and respiratory rate. Given that illness has been associated in multiple studies with altered var

In this thesis a recently developed energy resolving x-ray detector (Medipix) is used to investigate potential medical applications of spectral x-ray imaging. Computed Tomography (CT) is one of the most important medical imaging modalities. Recent developments in CT techniques include dual-energy CT, where images are taken with two different x-ray spectra by either using two x-ray tubes operated at different voltages, or modulating the operating voltage of a single tube. These techniques provide spectral information in the CT dataset but are limited to what can be achieved by manipulating the

Introduction: Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) is an emerging clinical imaging technique. Functional EIT by Evoked Response (fEITER) was developed at the University of Manchester as a high-speed, functional brain imaging device for use at the bedside.
