Abstract:
The subject around which the contributions in this volume gravitate is the creation of a higher institute of engineering studies in Florence in the late nineteenth-century. On the eve of the unification of Italy, Florence was a promising centre for a Polytechnic, in view of the experience of the Corpo di Ingegneri di Acque e Strade, the precocious railway building, the importance of the mining sector and the solidity of the Istituto Tecnico Toscano. Despite this, unlike what took place in Milan and in Turin, the Istituto Tecnico Toscano was not transformed into a Polytechnic for the training of engineers. The reasons for this non-development can be traced to the lack of "industrialist" propensities in the managerial group that emerged victorious from the "peaceful revolution" of 1859, to a desire for independence from the national academic system built on the Casati law, and to a local demand for engineering skills that was less dynamic than expected. Consequently, the prevailing winds were those of "normalisation" blowing from the government, the universities and the most prestigious Colleges of Engineers. Nevertheless, Florence continued to represent an important technological centre, especially in relation to railway infrastructures, public works, and the mechanical engineering industries (for example Pignone and Galileo). In the end it was not until one hundred years after unification that the city finally became the seat of a Faculty of Engineering.

Abstract:
This chapter introduces the “building blocks” section of the Handbook of Living Machines which explores the individual sensory and motor components that when pieced together can comprise a complete biological or artificial system. The first six chapters cover the senses of vision, audition, touch, taste, and smell (considered together as chemosensing, proprioception, and electrosensing). The remaining chapters review aspects of the biomimetics of animal movement. First, that biological muscle has many performance benefits compared with conventional electric, second, how oscillations in neural circuits can drive rhythmic movements, and finally the capacity of animal skin, in species such as geckos, to adhere to surfaces and support behaviors such as climbing.

Nelson, Louis P. Church Building and Architecture. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199644636.003.0018.

Full text
Abstract:
Contrary to popular perceptions, the long eighteenth century was a period of significant church building and the architecture of the Church of England in this era played a critical role in religious vitality and theological formation. While certainly not to the expansive scale of Victorian church construction, the period was an era of significant building, in London, but also across the whole of the British Empire. Anglican churches in this era were marked not so much by stylistic questions as by programmatic concerns. The era produced the auditory church, designed to accommodate better the hearing of the sermon and the increasing importance of music in worship. There were also changes to communion practice that implicated the design of architecture. Finally, some few Anglicans considered the theological implications of historical inspiration but many more considered the role of sensibility and emotion in worship and in architecture as one of worship’s agents.

Martin, Ryan. Introductory Physics: Building Models to Describe Our World. Queen's University Library, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.24908/bpwm9859.

Full text
Abstract:
This textbook is written to fill several needs that we believe were not already met by the many existing introductory physics textbooks. First, we wanted to ensure that the textbook is free to use for students and professors. Second, we wanted to design a textbook that is mindful of the new pedagogies being used in introductory physics, by writing it in a way that is adapted to a flipped-classroom approach where students complete readings, think about the readings, and then discuss the material in class. Third, we wanted to create a textbook that also addresses the experimental aspect of physics, by proposing experiments to be conducted at home or in the lab, as well as providing guidelines for designing experiments and reporting on experimental results. Finally, we wanted to create a textbook that is a sort of “living document”, that professors can edit and re-mix for their own needs, and to which students can contribute material as well. The textbook is hosted on GitHub, which allows anyone to make suggestions, point out issues and mistakes, and contribute material. This textbook is meant to be paired with the accompanying “Question Library”, which contains many practice problems, many of which were contributed by students. This textbook would not have been possible without the support of Queen’s University and the Department of Physics, Engineering Physics & Astronomy at Queen’s University, as well as the many helpful discussions with the students, technicians and professors at Queen’s University.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the influence of the maqāma, a short, often comic tale written in rhymed prose, on the modern Arabic novel. The maqāma and the novel share a number of features, including openly fictitious protagonists, the use of a plot, and relative length. This chapter begins with an overview of the maqāma as a literary genre, then discusses the work of Aḥmad Fāris al-Shidyāq and his links to the maqāma tradition, along with Badī‘ al-Zamān al-Hamadhānī’s influence on Muḥammad al-Muwayliḥ ī. It also explores the influence of maqāmas on modern Arabic literature from the nineteenth century and beyond. Finally, it assesses the role of the maqāma in the development of the modern Arabic novel.

Dupertuis, Rubén René. The Acts of the Apostles, Narrative, and History. Edited by Danna Nolan Fewell. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199967728.013.28.

Full text
Abstract:
The Acts of the Apostles offers a kind of sequel to Gospel of Luke, telling the story of the spread of the Jesus movement through the activities of key leaders, beginning in Jerusalem, moving westward into the Aegean region, and finally to Rome, the imperial center. Narrative approaches have been instrumental in turning attention to how the author tells the story using the tools of narrative—plot, characterization, and so on—as well as to how the author’s use of linguistic and cultural codes would have been heard by ancient readers. This chapter explores the importance of this westward geographical movement in Acts and, through a reading of the story of Paul’s visit to Philippi (Acts 16:11–40), looks at the ways in which the author of Acts adapts narrative conventions to highlight particular moments in the progression.

Abstract:
‘Mr Slope flattered himself that he could out-manoeuvre the lady…he did not doubt of ultimate triumph.’ Barchester Towers (1857) was the book that made Trollope's reputation and it remains his most popular and enjoyable novel. The arrival of a new bishop in Barchester, accompanied by his formidable wife and ambitious chaplain, Obadiah Slope, sets the town in turmoil as Archdeacon Grantly declares ‘War, war, internecine war!’ on Bishop Proudie and his supporters. Who will come out on top in the battle between the archdeacon, the bishop, Mr Slope, and Mrs Proudie? The livelihood of Mr Harding, the saintly hero of The Warden, is once more under threat but clerical warfare finds itself tangled up in the wayward (and sometimes perverse) desires of the many courtships, seductions, and romances of the book. Who will marry Eleanor Bold? Can any man resist the charms of the exotically beautiful ‘La Signora Madeline Vesey Neroni’? Will the oily Mr Slope finally get his comeuppance? Trollope's matchless handling of plot and character displays a skill whose distinctive literary qualities are celebrated in this new edition.

Full text
Abstract:
This book examines the scope and ambition of Stephen Sondheim’s musicals by drawing on the perspectives of musicological and dramaturgical scholars, literary and film critics, and musical theater practitioners. Consisting of twenty-seven essays, it analyzes Sondheim’s radical re-invention of the artistic form of the Broadway musical in response to various traditions of artistic innovation and popular entertainment and how his work with several collaborators has radically transformed the history of American musical theatre. It explores problematic questions of authorship peculiar to the cultural milieu of Broadway musical theater by focusing on intertextuality in works ranging from Anthony Shaffer’s Sleuth (1970) to the film Hangover Square (1945) and Johann Sebastian Bach’s St Matthew Passion. It also probes the dramaturgical technique of songs that enable comic performers to act out the logic of character and plot in a meta-theatrical style and discusses the notion of the musical as a performance event, patterns of interpretation in the repeated performance of Sondheim’s musicals in the United Kingdom, the pleasures and challenges of performing these musicals in international opera houses, Sondheim’s work for cinema and television and his “cinematic” approach to musical theater, and his subtle and often ironic exploitation of genre conventions such as pastiche and parody. Finally, the book considers questions of cultural, political, and personal identity raised by Sondheim’s musicals in relation to contemporary American society.

Full text
Abstract:
Building on existing interviews, journal articles, and archival research, The Films of Barbara Kopple assesses Kopple’s entire career to date, paying particular attention historical contexts, technique, critical reception, and ongoing influence. Each chapter blends close analyses of the films with insights drawn from film history and documentary studies to demonstrate that Kopple has consistently and often doggedly pursued projects that document the experiences of the victimized, the voiceless, and those in crisis. The contributors treat the entire scope of Kopple’s career, from her work in the early 1970s as an intern for David and Albert Maysles, to her mid-career experiments with commercial television and fictional projects, and finally to her recent forays into digital streaming platforms such as YouTube. The book also provides cultural contexts for Kopple’s films, including representations of class, gender, sexuality, and race. Finally, it assesses the contours of Kopple’s critical reputation and popularity, including her influence on contemporary filmmakers. In all, the book aims to stir interest in the life and films of Barbara Kopple, reminding readers why her films continue to be culturally significant.

Section II considers whether the administrative goods of trust-building and making credible commitments might also normatively support or ground principles concerning the protection of legitimate expectations. Section III looks to the more basic aim of minimizing the pain of frustration as normative support or grounding for my principles of administrative justice. Finally, Section IV considers whether the principles have any negative unintended consequences that could potentially derail the proposed consequentialist grounding of them.

Abstract:
Community Power and Empowerment is the most comprehensive treatment of empowerment theory to date. The book begins by situating empowerment with regard to community power, thereby addressing a long-standing ambiguity within empowerment theory, research, and practice. Next, chapters examine psychological, organizational, and community aspects of empowerment processes. A new orienting framework for studying and comparing community empowerment processes is developed. The outcomes and impacts of empowerment processes are specified across multiple pathways. Finally, the book provides recommendations for integrating research and practice to achieve the goals of empowerment: building and exercising social power for systemic change and improving community well-being.

Abstract:
This chapter highlights five broad lessons from a series of research and findings on the Andean Tribunal of Justice (ATJ) that contribute to the comparative study of international courts. The first is in adapting transplanted international legal institutions to local contexts. The chapter then provides that not all international courts seek to expand their influence and authority. The third lesson concerns expanding the interlocutors and compliance partners of international courts. Next, the chapter shows how the ATJ created judicial strategies for building the international rule of law in fraught environments. Finally, the fifth lesson covers defending regional intellectual property (IP) laws that protect local values and interests.

This chapter presents a generalization of the typical notion of a subbuilding. It begins with the notation where Δ‎ is a building of type Π‎, and 𝐓 = (Π‎, Θ‎, A) is a Tits index of absolute type Π‎. A subbuilding of split type is a subbuilding of type 𝐓TΠ‎. The term “subbuilding” is used to refer to a subbuilding of split type of a residue. The chapter then considers apartments of a building that are classified as subbuildings, along with the notion of a thin 𝐓-building and a proposition in which 𝐓-buildings of Σ‎ are 𝐓-apartments. Finally, it describes a proposition where a Γ‎-residue of Δ‎ contains chambers of Σ‎.

Abstract:
This chapter turns to the ‘external context’. Firstly, the chapter describes the traditional rule that surrounding circumstances are taken into account. Secondly, it traces how that traditional rule evolved into the modern approach of having regard to the wider legal and factual matrix, through the seminal speeches of Lord Wilberforce to Lord Hoffmann's restatement of the governing principles in Investors Compensation Scheme Ltd v West Bromwich Building Society. Thirdly, the scope of the exclusionary rules is examined in the light of the two leading cases of Investors Compensation Scheme Ltd v West Bromwich Building Society and Chartbrook Ltd v Persimmon Homes Ltd. Finally, consideration is given to arguments for further liberalization of the admissibility rules.

Full text
Abstract:
Economic regionalism has been dominated by preferential trade agreements (PTAs). Not only have their numbers surged since the end of the Cold War, we also see different varieties of PTAs emerging. First, long-standing PTAs have evolved into deeper forms of economic regionalism, such as custom unions, common markets, or currency unions. Second, PTAs increasingly involve “behind-the-border” trade liberalization, such as the coordination of domestic trade–related regulatory standards. Third, many of the PTAs that were established over the past 25 years no longer only involve countries of the “Global North” but are formed by developing and developed countries (“North-South” PTAs) and between developing countries (“South-South” PTAs). Finally, a most recent development in economic regionalism concerns the building of so called “mega-PTAs,” such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TTP) and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), combining several PTAs.In order to explain the formation, proliferation, and evolution of these varieties of PTA, existing international political economy (IPE) approaches have to give more credit to political factors, such as the locking-in of domestic reforms or the preservation of regional stability. Moreover, IPE scholarship should engage more systematically with diffusion research, particularly to account for the spate of deeper regionalism. Finally, “rising powers” and “emerging markets” constitute an exciting new research area for IPE. These new players differ with regard to the importance they attribute to regionalism and the ways in which they have sought to use and shape it. Identifying and explaining variations in the link between rising powers and regionalism is a key challenge for future research

The first part surveys the current state of the field, and by setting aside national borders and disciplinary origins, pays attention to the broader themes, topics, and issues feminist legal history has chosen to privilege. The second part, building upon this presentation of the field, by drawing attention, not only to the thematics of feminist legal history, but also to the process of its production, offers a critical understanding of what exists; in particular, the implications of its interdisciplinary nature. Finally, in pursuing a critical account of the work produced, possibilities for otherwise thinking of and ‘doing’ feminist legal history are considered.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses features of the extensively used attribution “art of listening” in contexts of therapy, partially New Age–like capacity building, sociology, and music. The second section comments on the relationship between music listening and music appreciation. The key assumption discussed is that understanding (described as a process of relating oneself to something or somebody) unfolds as activities that can be increased respectively between four poles: creating meaning, making music, generating emotion, and deepening reflection. Finally, the chapter returns to the question: Is listening to music an art—or not? Agreeing with Adam Heinrich Müller’s assumption that “the art of listening” stands for creating meaning autonomously, this question is answered in the affirmative.

Abstract:
The chapter Micro- and nanotechnology for living machines describes research on new biohybrid technologies, engineered at the micro- and nano-scales, that combine some of the benefits of mechanical and electronic systems with those of biological systems. The chapter begins by reviewing some of the challenges of building devices at very small physical scales and discusses how new fabrication methodologies could impact on different classes of industrial, daily life, and biomedical products. We next explain how progress is being achieved through advances in micro- and nanomechatronics, particularly in the field of nanorobotic manipulation. Finally, we summarize recent progress towards building biohybrid living machines that combine nanomaterials with biological cells and outline the design of a micro- and nanorobotic manipulation system for cell assembly called the nanolaboratory.

This chapter assembles a few standard definitions, fixes some notation, and reviews a few of the results about buildings and Moufang polygons. It also summarizes the basic facts about Coxeter groups and buildings, including the fundamental properties of roots, residues, apartments, and projection maps. The chapter defines a Moufang building as spherical, thick, irreducible and of rank at least 2, and a Bruhat-Tits building as a thick irreducible affine building whose building at infinity is Moufang. Furthermore, it presents a fundamental result of Tits: that an irreducible thick spherical building of rank at least 3 satisfies the Moufang condition as do all the irreducible residues of rank at least 2 of such a building. Finally, it considers a simplicial complex, the dimension of which is its cardinality minus one.

Abstract:
The Introduction first sketches the troubled historiography of the early Reformation in Poland, explaining why this kingdom is little visible in international scholarship on the Reformation. The book’s central research question is introduced: why did King Sigismund I (1506–48) and his ruling elites not persecute the many Lutherans active in the Polish monarchy in his reign? The Introduction offers a critique of current scholarship on early modern religious toleration, an account of the book’s argument, and finally (building on John Bossy and borrowing from J. G. A. Pocock) a broader hypothesis about (and broader evidence for) the Reformation as a profound conceptual-linguistic shift—from a late medieval concept of orthodoxy as consensus and unity, to an early modern concept of orthodoxy as correct doctrine.

Abstract:
This chapter considers our confidence and self-belief with regards to the interview, and starts by discussing the concept of building a psychological scaffolding that underpins an interview performance. It goes on to consider being robust and resilient, and within that, the importance of understanding that we may fail and having the ability to reflect truthfully on what went wrong. The chapter then discusses interview clothing from a psychological perspective and provides an anecdote to reinforce the suggestion of wearing suitable attire. The chapter sees ourselves from the perspective of the examiner and ideas are suggested as to how we may question ourselves in order to strengthen our position as the best candidate. Finally, it thinks about optimization and belief in our own abilities.

Abstract:
This chapter summarizes the different cases about Moufang quadrangles of type E⁶, E₇ and E₈. The first case is that the building at infinity of the Bruhat-Tits building Ξ‎ is an unramified quadrangle; the second, a semi-ramified quadrangle; and the third, a ramified quadrangle. The chapter considers a theorem that takes into account two root group sequences, both of which are either indifferent or the various dimensions, types, etc., are as indicated in exactly one of twenty-three cases. It also presents a number of propositions relating to a quaternion division algebra and a quadratic space of type Eℓ for ℓ = 6, 7 or 8. Finally, it emphasizes the fact that the quadrangles of type F₄ could have been overlooked in the classification of Moufang polygons.

Abstract:
This chapter deals with the case that the building at infinity Λ‎ of the Bruhat-Tits building Ξ‎ is a Moufang quadrangle of type F₄. It begins with the hypothesis stating that Λ‎ = (K, L, q) is a quadratic space of type F₄, K is complete with respect to a discrete valuation ν‎ and F is closed with respect to ν‎, Λ‎ is the Moufang quadrangle corresponding to a root group sequence, and R₀ and R₁ as the two residues of Ξ‎. The chapter also considers the theorem supposing that Λ‎ is of type F₄ and that R₀ and R₁ are not both indifferent, and claims that both cases really occur. Finally, it presents the proposition that R₀ and R₁ are both indifferent if and only if q is totally wild.

Abstract:
This chapter uses the notion of a Moufang structure to show that if Δ‎ is a spherical building satisfying the Moufang condition and Γ‎ is a descent group of Δ‎, then the fixed point building Δ‎Γ‎ also satisfies the Moufang condition. The discussion begins with the notation: Let (W, S) denote the type of Δ‎, let G = Aut(Δ‎) and let G° denote the group of type-preserving elements of G. The chapter then presents the conditions for an element g of G to be unipotent and for a subgroup U of G to be unipotent. It also describes a unipotent group U stabilizing a residue R and a unipotent element fixing two chambers x and y. Finally, it considers the set of extensions that forms a group acting faithfully on R.

Abstract:
This chapter examines biology and culture as interactive influences in shaping the human essence, arguing that “culture is biological.” In particular, it considers the idea that cultural embeddedness might be a distinct human attribute from an evolutionary perspective. It then shows how biological processes shaped over millennia have culminated in a species that has the ability to read and write, play computer games, and fly airplanes. It also explores the genes-physiology-neuroscience side of human behavior and the social-cultural-economic environment in which the behavior takes place, along with the basic building blocks of values. Finally, it discusses some characteristics that make humans unique: their ability to build on previous innovations; their differentiation into social roles and the assignment of consensually agreed social status; and their belief in supernatural agents.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on memory within the context of human aging. It starts with a conception of aging that highlights the interplay of genetics, lifestyles, and culture as fundamental dynamics underlying the aging process as well as its impact on memory functioning. The chapter then focuses on the context of ontogenesis and describes central concepts of memory structure and functioning in a lifespan perspective highlighting the adaptive function of memory use. Building on this, the chapter elaborates the dynamic interplay and the role of memory in the self-regulation of the aging self. Finally, the chapter places memory in the context of two aspects of culture, differing between assistive culture providing knowledge and technology resources and culture as representing symbolic resources that help in the collective and individual construction of meaning.

Abstract:
This book provides the first comprehensive analysis of the withdrawal agreement concluded between the United Kingdom and the European Union to create the legal framework for Brexit. Building on a prior volume, it overviews the process of Brexit negotiations that took place between the UK and the EU from 2017 to 2019. It also examines the key provisions of the Brexit deal, including the protection of citizens’ rights, the Irish border, and the financial settlement. Moreover, the book assesses the governance provisions on transition, decision-making and adjudication, and the prospects for future EU–UK trade relations. Finally, it reflects on the longer-term challenges that the implementation of the 2016 Brexit referendum poses for the UK territorial system, for British–Irish relations, as well as for the future of the EU beyond Brexit.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the organizational socialization mechanisms in automotive plants in Russia and China. The empirical analysis starts with selection processes. How do the companies select candidates during recruitment and whom do they select? Are they looking for a certain type of employee? The chapter continues with the analysis of onboarding concepts in China and Russia and then follows the employees within their teams. It analyzes the social relationships in the team, which influence the socialization processes within the company. Finally, overarching company activities intended to promote social integration (team building, competitions) are examined to determine the extent to which they shape work behaviors and generate identification with the company. The analysis shows considerable differences between the Russian and the Chinese plants regarding the intensity and the effects of organizational socialization.

Abstract:
This chapter explores how we can better understand culture by understanding the creative processes that fuel it, and better understand creativity by examining it from its cultural context. First, it summarizes attempts to develop a scientific framework for how culture evolves, and it explores what these frameworks imply for the role of creativity in cultural evolution. Next it examines how questions about the relationship between creativity and cultural evolution have been addressed using an agent-based model in which neural network-based agents collectively generate increasingly fit ideas by building on previous ideas and imitating neighbors’ ideas. Finally, it outlines studies of how creative outputs are influenced, in perhaps unexpected ways, by other ideas and individuals, and how individual creative styles “peek through” cultural outputs in different domains.
