The 1906 earthquake and fire in San Francisco devastated the city and left 200,000 people homeless. To house the displaced population, small cottages were built in camps in the city’s parks. Budget cuts for historic preservation and other humanities based projects are occurring on the federal, state, and local levels. Funding sources that historically supported these types of projects are being scaled back and eliminated. Given the current political trends, this situation will probably continue for the next several years.
