The first chapter explores the impact of the rapid expansion of the Cambodian garment industry on women’s and children’s well being. It documents a sizeable increase in schooling at early ages, but also increased secondary dropouts. It also demonstrates that the growth of garment manufacturing is associated with delays in marriage and childbearing, and potentially long-lasting improvements in girls’ height. These are human capital, corruption and institutions. The first chapter presents an analysis of the role of corruption in determining the distribution of income and, with this, the degree of poverty and inequality. The analysis is based on an overlapping generations model in which individuals may seek to improve their productive efficiency (and hence earnings) by supplementing or substituting publicly provided services (such as education and hea
