Abstract:
Railway networks have different levels of development, which affects the overall transport process and integrated sustainable development. This paper presents a methodology to assess and classify the railway network performance along the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) core network corridor. The Orient–East Med corridor (OEM) has been examined. Twenty-two infrastructural, economic and technological criteria for assessment of railway transport have been proposed. The countries were ranked used multi-criteria decision making (MCDM), by applying the Sequential Interactive Modelling for Urban Systems (SIMUS). A sensitivity analysis was performed regarding each objective, and then, their allowable range of variation was determined without modifying the whole ranking of countries. The criteria weights have been determined on the basis of the output of using the SIMUS method. It was found that the main criteria for ranking the countries are: length of the connecting railway lines of the corridor in the country, length of the railway lines in the country, number of intermodal terminals, gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, passengers transport performance, freight transport performance for the railway network, corridor freight usage intensity. It was found that the railway transport in the area of the OEM corridor located in Central Europe is better developed than in the Southeast European area. A cluster analysis was performed to classify countries into groups to verify the results. The results show that the eight countries included in the OEM corridor can be classified into three groups. The methodology could be used to make decisions about transport planning and improvement of the connectivity and sustainability of the railway transport, considering their development.

Abstract:
The commodification and gamification of urban mobility is a trending urban phenomenon in Japan. Since its privatization in 2004, Tokyo Metro, one of Tokyo’s major public transportation providers, has conducted various business campaigns to package mobility as a desirable commodity. This article looks into that ways in which Tokyo Metro’s campaigns reinforce urban spectacles and reduce urban experiences into consumptions. The advances in technologies and the emergence of social media also facilitate consumer behaviours in the campaigns. Such campaigns transform the interrelations between railway mobility and mass consumption from ‘moving for consuming’ to ‘moving is consuming’. In the near future, the commodification, gamification and diversification of railway mobility will become the norm in urban Japan as human activities become increasingly dependent upon mass public transportation. This is an inexorable outcome of the mixture of financial needs, a highly mature consumer culture, dependence on railway systems, aggregating commodification of urban spaces and the incessant quest for novel types of consumption.

Abstract:
The quality of smooth blasting including the volume of over-/underbreak and blasting-induced damage of surrounding rocks has been extensively considered to be highly correlated to both the cost and advancement rate of rock tunnelling excavated by the drill-blast method. A general control strategy for smooth blasting is too difficult to be available due to the uncertainties and complexity of rock masses, as well as the varying blasting operations. As prerequisite for the evaluation of the blasting quality, effective identification of the influential factors affecting smooth blasting usually plays a significant role in the improvement of smooth blasting design. Compared to the expensive and time-consuming experiments including physical modelling and field tests, numerical modelling, as a cost-efficient approach, offers an attractive alternative to investigate the influential factors in terms of weight, which might be more applicable and reliable for the optimization of smooth blasting parameters. In this case, the dominant factors and secondary factors can be quantitatively identified. Considering the dominant factors often orient the development of things; in this work, a numerical-based approach was proposed to quantitatively identify the dominant factors influencing the quality of smooth blasting. Proposed 3-dimensional blasting modelling was based on LS-DYNA to simulate the occurrence of smooth blasting in rock masses, and the erosion algorithm was also employed to determine the fracturing of jointed rocks. The orthogonal experimental design method was utilized to optimize the experimental arrangement. Seven factors with 4 levels including the perimeter hole spacing, line of least resistance, charge concentration, charging explosive, type of rock mass, detonation velocity, and drilling deviation were taken into account. The geological setting and project background of a real rock tunnel served for the Chengdu-Chongqing high-speed railway were selected as the site conditions to perform the numerical investigation. Calculated area and distance of overbreak as the observed parameters indicating the quality of smooth blasting were utilized to determine sensitivities of factors based on the range analysis of orthogonal experiments. The results suggested that the type of rock mass has the greatest influence on the blasting quality, whereas the charge concentration and detonation velocity can be considered as the secondary factors under the specific site conditions. The proposed numerical approach for assessing influential factors of quality of smooth blasting under specified geological conditions is expected to improve the parameter design and operation of smooth blasting in practical applications.

Abstract:
Objective: The study of railroad transport rate-setting system from a position of customer-oriented approach and logistics, particularly the development of specific practical proposals of freight delivery system optimization and the assessment of OJSC “Russian Railways” logistic (terminal stocking) activity indices. Methods: Analytical method was applied, as well as economical and mathematical tools of terminalistics, being a new school. Results: An attempt was made to review the existing railway freight delivery system. It was observed that it was unreasonable to exclude materials handling elements - logistical objects (LO) of different types, from a logistical chain as by means of the element in question the freight arrives at as well as leaves the railroad. If the focus is made only on operating indices of functioning and traffic section of a logistical chain, it artificially impoverishes the strongest functional of railway enterprises, leading to a simplistic approach of traffic process managing and does not contribute to freight flow transferring to railroads. A new system of indicators was suggested for economic justification and calculation of parameters LO and TS, which were missing before. All indices were adjusted to the existing system of economical and operational indices of storage yard and railroads functioning. The new system may be applied in logistical rating, as well as terminal and stocking infrastructure of OJSC “Russian Railroads”. It may be used for: 1) LO identification; 2) LO selection taking into account its functionality, dislocation, etc. ; 3) construction projects’ assessment and reconstruction of terminal and stocking railroads’ infrastructure facilities; 4) logistical functioning of OJSC “Russian Railroads” holding company; 5) LO construction; 6) railroad transport functioning forecasting and planning. Practical importance: The application of the originally developed system of indicators will allow OJSC “Russian Railroads” to effectively design, operate and plan the functioning of terminal and stocking infrastructure facilities. The effectiveness of the suggested TSS is in more rapid freight delivery to consumers, expenditure reduction in technical maintenance and ineffective railway sidings and section’s stations repair, shunting and exporting train locomotives release, as well as passing siding of a section’s station for more effective formation of exit routes, technical and station’s speed increase of line haul main directions through home-base station, due to a number of train operation paths release, occupied with demountable export trains’ operation.

Abstract:
This paper presents a practical approach for monitoring public transportation systems' performance by focusing on customer evaluations. Within the framework of the developed method, 22 indicators are aggregated for 6 different measures, which are time, cost, accessibility and transfer, comfort, safety – security and quality of service respectively. Passenger Oriented Performance IndeX (POPIX) has been developed and applied to the Istanbul Metro, Light Rail and Tram systems. The goal of this research is to propose a new customer oriented performance index for transportation systems, enabling a reliable and objective base for monitoring system performance by setting performance goals and identifying priorities. Meanwhile, the proposed methodology also allows for the investigation of the performance changes of a particular transportation system and for performance comparison of different systems directly from the customer point of view. The data of the index is attained by the Customer Satisfaction Survey of Istanbul Public Railways' 2005, 2006 and 2007. The POPIX methodology has been defined and the corresponding POPIX scores are calculated for the systems investigated. Furthermore, the % POPIX concept has been developed for the comparison of different systems. Lastly, the shifted POPIX concept has been proposed for more reliable comparison between different years. The framework has been implemented to the public railway systems and individual index scores are calculated for each indicator, measure and overall system. The measures of cost, accessibility and transfer and comfort have lower index scores. Metro index scores are superior in comparison to the Tram and Light Rail for all the years analyzed.

Abstract:
The increasing application of systems engineering to the design of modern railways has placed a heavy demand on high quality software-based railway system simulators. Very often, a simulator of this kind is not only expensive to build but also to maintain. Modifications and extensions of an existing simulator are always necessary. This leads to the need for investigation into the use of advanced modelling and software engineering techniques to improve the simulation programs such that they are robust yet easy to change. The work described in this thesis, divided into two parts, investigates a) software design using object-oriented technology; b) algorithms for the efficient solution of power network in the DC railway system simulation context. Regarding the software design, an adaptable simulation framework design based on a subsystem-manager-database structured concept has been built using Borland C++. A class library consisting of 66 classes has also been developed. The simulator developed to date, working on any IBM compatible PCs, is able to produce system performance including substation loads, train voltage and current profiles, rail potentials and train diagrams. The simulator models have been verified by means of comparing the results generated by the Birmingham University Fortran multi-train simulator. On the efficient power network solution algorithms, an extensive investigation into the sparse matrix and iterative numerical methods has been conducted. Several representative algorithms have been coded for a comprehensive dynamic speed trial. According to the results, the variable bandwidth preordering is by far the most efficient algorithm for small to medium scale simulations, whilst the minimum degree ordering is the fastest algorithm for simulations including rail potential calculations in which the system usually has several hundred nodes.

Abstract:
This study focuses on the “Joanne” series of guidebooks that acquired popularity several decades before it was renamed “Guides Bleus” in 1919. The aim of this work is to grasp the series’ genealogy, evolution and transformation throughout the geographical regions it dealt with, mostly 19th and early 20th century Europe. This thesis falls into a multidisciplinary approach: mainly a historical research, it also makes use of Geography as well as History of Art, Archaeology, Literature and History of techniques. As the Joanne guidebooks were not created ex nihilo, this thesis first delves into the context that pushed the editor Hachette, in 1855, to buy back a tourist guidebook series that was then called “Richard”. It is thus necessary to go back to the late 18th century and the appearance of the first "Reichard" guidebooks. It then analyses the first acquisition of guidebooks that resulted in the creation of the “Bibliothèque des chemins de fer” (Railway library), distributed in the kiosks of train stations. In its second part, this study aims to reconstruct the emergence of these guidebooks famous for their “Prussian blue” covers, taking into account technical evolutions of printing and overall competition in this domain. This brings about a comparison between the French production and its British and German counterparts, Murray and Baedeker. These series pose a serious commercial threat to the French guidebooks, but also represent a source of emulation. The third part of this work introduces the reader to the various derivatives of the Joanne series. They are seen as an example of how the guidebooks were adapted to change in travel practices and to the appearance of new forms of transport, rail and automobile, before the rupture of the First World War. The thesis hence studies the shift that brought about the “Guides Bleus”. The work ends with a synthesis of the role played by these guidebooks in their historical period as well as to the birth of mass tourism in the middle of the 20th century

Abstract:
Transit Oriented Development theoretical and practical framework represents an important tool for municipalities, private actors and citizens to enhance quality of life in urban contexts. Planning cities that encourage sustainable mobility patterns can contribute to aim at diversifying land use and making cities more accessible, safer and attractive for people. Handen has developed as a car-dependant area that is planned to growth its population and build more than 9000 new housing units by 2030 (Haninge Kommun, 2016). The TOD standard 3.0 was applied in the area around Handen pendeltåg station, to practically assess the TODness level of the area and provide recommendations to take into a consideration for future and current developments. Using the TOD standard in Handen can contribute to aim at a more sustainable growth pattern for both current and expected new citizens on the area. After implementing the evaluation system, it was found out that the best ranked variables were Compactness and Cycling. In contrast the variables that received the lowest scores were Walk, Densify, Connect, and Shift. Overall, Handen scored a Bronze level of TODness. Therefore, there are several actions that could be implemented on the study area in order to improve the TODness level. Specifically, Handen needs to diversify its land use, enhance the pedestrian network, encourage land mix use, decrease the space destined to cars and increase pedestrian connectivity, among others.

Abstract:
Turnouts are an important part of railway infrastructure for two reasons: infrastructure andmaintenance. For the infrastructure they provide the flexibility to allow the formulation and branchingof railway network and for maintenance they consume a large part of maintenance budget and have aprominent place in maintenance planning policy and activities. This is because as a “mechanical object”,a turnout often experiences malfunctions. The problem becomes even more complicated, since a turnoutis composed of many different parts and each of them fails for very different reasons (e.g. switch bladesvs crossing part). This is reflected in the different needs for maintenance activities, as railways areforced to pour in excessive amounts of resources to carry out emergency repairs, or to carry outunnecessary scheduled maintenance works in turnouts, which do not need to be inspected or repaired. Therefore, it is difficult to plan and organize maintenance activities in turnouts in an efficient manner. This raises the question of whether malfunctions in turnouts can be predicted and used as informationfor the maintenance planning process in order to optimize it and develop it into a more reliablepreventive maintenance planning. The aim of this analysis is to attempt to model the probability of various malfunctions in turnouts asa function of their main geometric and operational characteristics by using logistic regression modelsand then input these results into the maintenance planning process in order to optimize it. First, it wasimportant to objectify the railway track system and the turnout components, both in terms of parts andinterrelationships. Furthermore, the process and basic elements of railway maintenance planning weredefined, as well as arguments that motivate a turn towards preventive maintenance planningmethodologies. This was done through a comprehensive literature study. The basis of this research was case studies, which described the relationship between geometricaland operational characteristics of turnouts and their wear, as well as risk-based modelling methods inrailway maintenance planning. To create the analysis model, data from turnouts in eastern regionprovided by the Swedish Transport Administration were used, both from the point of view of describingthe underlying causes of turnout malfunctions and to formulate an object-oriented database suitable forusing in logistic regression models. The goal was a logit model that calculated the malfunctionprobability of a turnout, which could be used directly into a maintenance planning framework, whichranked maintenance activities in turnouts. The results obtained showed that although the model suffers from low correlation, differentrelationships between input variables and different functional errors were established. Furthermore, thepotential of these analytical models and modeling structures was shown to be able to developpreventive, predictive railway maintenance plans, but further analysis of the data structure is required, especially regarding data quality. Finally, further possible research areas are presented.

Abstract:
The monograph is devoted to the generalization of the factors of railway transportation in Western Siberia and their influence on the formation of the experience of saving transportation resources in 1965-1991. The basic factors are considered such as the natural conditions and the production apparatus of the region, the development of a program-oriented approach to the development of the territory and the formation of the material base of railway transport in its space. These components are considered as historical challenges for the design of labor initiatives "from below". These initiatives are classified into three groups: speeding up the turnover of wagons, using the locomotive fleet, and saving fuel, energy, and other" variable " resources of the railway transportation process. The issues are considered taking into account the trends of fading opportunities for the Soviet model of system-wide development. It will be of interest to all those who are concerned about the history of Russia, the organization of its transport security system.

Abstract:
This chapter explores aspects of time and what we today call transnational law, embodied in the object of the railway clock. Railway clocks acted as crucial elements of networks, to implement and disseminate a standardized time formalized by international law in the nineteenth century. Together, they produced a new temporal regime of strict mechanical conformance to an abstract standard, oriented globally to a single appointed meridian. The chapter demonstrates how transnational law and standardized time have co-produced one another: law was mobilized to create standardized time in the nineteenth century; standardized time has made possible the growth of a particular law globally. Together, they have operated to enable the expansion of capitalist markets and transactional relations globally.

Abstract:
Implementation of railway controller application logic is a highly safety-critical and time-consuming task carried out individually for each client and station by specialised signalling engineers, with corresponding high costs. M???a is a software development framework designed to create code generators for application logic for the client railway companies of Ansaldo STS that use the Microlok II controller to lower the cost and increase repeatability. This chapter describes the evolution of M???a from prototype to framework, and introduces the software engineering approaches of object-oriented meta-modelling and framework development along the way. It also presents known limitations and further application areas of the framework.

Abstract:
<p>In order to use urban space effectively in Transit-Oriented Development (TOD), over-track buildings (built over railways), are becoming increasingly popular in Japan. From a construction and structural design point of view, the basement structure just beneath railways generally cannot be built while railway operations continue (interruption to operations is not permitted, In general).</p><p>This paper presents the structural design of a mid-story isolated high-rise building constructed over railways in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. The paper shows, not only the philosophy of the system, but also the structural design, full-scale experiments, and evaluation of the performance in each structural element. The authors believe that such a structural design will be one of the effective solutions to the over-track building.</p>

Abstract:
Latter trends evidence the growing competition amongst the transportation modes in the Republic of Uzbekistan, led by the development of the railway sector. In growing competitive conditions, it is vital to for the management of JSC "Uzbekistan Temir Yollari" to implement the most modern approaches and methods for arranging passenger transportation. This article aims to review the role of marketing activities in increasing the competitiveness of the railway transportation sector. The improvement of the transport activities is associated with the developments of social and economic sectors of the country. Thus, the purpose of the research is to identify the role of railway sector in the economic development of the country, as well as the influence of the social sector improvements to the competitiveness of the railway industry. Furthermore, the study investigates the modern marketing strategies in promoting the railway sector. The global experience proves the importance of planning effective marketing communications in developing the railway sector. The research findings suggest the application of a client-oriented approach as the most effective strategy of marketing communications strategy in the country. The client-oriented approach allows to accurately complete the planning process at each stage of service delivery, that assumes the previously planned algorithm of the marketing communications based on the received results. The importance of the previously planned algorithm is that it allows step by step planning activities of marketing communication considering the features of the railways transportation and in case of failure, allows to optimize this process through applying necessary measures.

Abstract:
This paper focuses on the difficulties noticed in Railway’s Decision Making processes according to schedule-making and to control tasks on the central operation post of principal railway lines. Traffic density, rail stations’ capacity and human criteria are main factors in order to develop and to obtain a useful tool for helping Railway Administrations in the decision making processes. In this sense, a tool is presented to operate off-line for planning and scheduling; and on-line for common operation on traffic central post. The architecture is oriented to save time in specific modules where operation tools are trained on different scenarios to solve particular ‘events’ which are defined to be critical for the line. The objective is the generation of an optimal operational plan to regulate the line with minimum train delay according to the characteristics of the line (stations, facilities) and vehicles. The results are proven useful for mass-transport, like underground, or open-line topologies with mixed traffic both passenger and freight.

Abstract:
Since the industrial revolution of the 18th century, the modern economic system gradually matured and rapidly expanded in the world, especially the state capital investment relying on the railway, which drastically changed the urbanization process and city agglomeration pattern around the world. At the end of the 19th century, due to the important strategic value of the Far East, Russia raised state capital, built the Siberian Railway directly to Vladivostok, especially the C.E.R. across Northeast China, induced capital competition among China, Japan and Russia around the port and railway construction right and management right, formed the SMR system centered on Dalian, the C.E.R. system centered on Vladivostok, and the Chinese railway system centered on Huludao, laid the city structure of the “hub-railway network-hinterland” model centered on the port city in Northeast China, which promoted the development of commercial cities, hub cities and industrial and mining cities. Under the special tariff system, China, Japan and Russia relied on port-railway capital competition, forming the city development dynamic mechanism oriented by the export-oriented economy, that has the important theory value for how to effectively use the state capital advantage to promote the development of the macro-regional city system in the context of economic globalization.

Abstract:
Railway distributed system integration needs to realize information exchange, resources sharing and coordination process across fields, departments and application systems. And railway data integration is essential to implement this integration. In order to resolve the problem of heterogeneity of data models among data sources of different railway operation systems, this paper presents a novel integration data model of spatial structure, a XML-oriented 3-dimension common data model. The proposed model accommodates both the flexibility of level relationship and syntax expression in data integration. In this model, a spatial data pattern is used to describe and express the characteristic relationship of data items among all types of data. Based on the data model with rooted directed graph and the organization of level as well as the flexibility of the expression, the model can represent the mapping between different data models, including relationship model and object-oriented model. A consistent concept and algebraic description of the data set is given to function as the metadata in data integration, so that the algebraic manipulation of data integration is standardized to support the data integration of distributed system.
