Abstract:
This thesis explores the question of why life can not be revived when death occurs due to lack of resources. For example, why can't something as simple as E.coli be revived after its death? The hypothesis is that death is not defined by the end of metabolism itself, but rather a continued metabolism which in turn destructs the entity itself. Consequently, a virus should not be capable of ”dying” due to its lack of metabolism. To study self replication, a recent mathematical model utilising Gillespie's algorithm and differential equations has been explored. Using this model, real systems such a

Abstract:
My thesis investigates the antithetical movements of self-destruction and of self-creation in a selection of works by Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. In order to shed light on this paradox, I use the mythological figure of Thanatos, which is conceptualised as a principle of death within life as well as one of life within death. The figure of Thanatos will enable me to trace the ways in which various strategies in the writings both create, and destroy, the texts on multiple levels. I work with two distinct critical methods to illuminate these paradoxical movements. In the first part of the the

Abstract:
Jack Spicer's life and work was intimately bound up with a sense of community. His poetry workshop in 1957, his poetic companionship with Robin Blaser and Robert Duncan, and his involvement with young poets in the Bay Area, all point to a conception of poetry as community. It is, however, his relationship to past poets and the "tradition" of modern poetry that this thesis mainly focuses on. From the beginning to the end of my thesis, the problematic meaning of this tradition is explored. My thesis is that Spicer's poetry does not create a vision, or conception of community, but creates an inst

This thesis explores how the ideals and expectations attached to the female body in Australia and Japan affect women’s self-harm and suicidal behaviours. In the majority of cultural contexts, traditional ideas of sex (male/female) and gender (masculine/feminine) still affect the modern constructions of sex and gender and the ideals and expectations prescribed to them. All behaviours have the potential to be performed but the ideals and expectations prescribed to a male or female body can influence the behaviours performed by a ‘good’ man or woman. These shifts are not only indicative of the tendency to experiment with unexpected narrative strategies in early twentieth century fiction, but also reveal a concern with the individual self in relation to a community of other selves that intersects several wider is

The inclusion of suicide in medical and psychiatric discussions as well as the production of scientific data on suicide through medical research have resulted in the widely accepted view of suicide as a medical problem.
