In this thesis, we study the spectral properties of the hierarchical Anderson model. This model is an approximation of the Anderson tight-binding model on Zd , with the usual discrete Laplacian replaced by a hierarchical long-range interaction operator. In the hierarchical Anderson model, we are given a countable set X endowed with a hierarchical structure. The free hierarchical Laplacian is a self-adjoint operator Delta acting on the Hilbert space l 2( X ). The spectrum of Delta consists of isolated infinitely degenerate eigenvalues. The transition becomes also enhanced, when the hybridization V between the localized and conduction electrons decreases, for the case that the total number of electrons is fixed. Investigating the behavior of the participation numbers of eigenstates as well as studying their multifractal properties, we find states in the center of the band which show critical behavior up to the system size N=200x200 considered. This result is confirmed by an independent analysis of the localization lengths in quasi-1D strips with the help of the transfermatrix method. The product of Synechocystis PCC 6803 open reading frame slr0176, InrS (Internal nickel responsive Sensor) a member of the CsoR-RcnR metalloregulatory family, has been characterised in the course of this work and found to regulate the expression of nrsD, encoding a nickel export protein, in a nickel dependent manner. InrS occludes a previously unidentified cryptic promoter in a nickel resistance operon. In addition to Ni(II) InrS is also competent to bind and respond to Zn(II), Co(II) Cu(II) and Cu(I) in vitro as determined by metal binding studies & fluorescence anisotropy. The factors that f

Abstract:
We are interested in two probabilistic models of a process interacting with a random environment. Firstly, we consider the model of directed polymers in random environment. In this case, a polymer, represented as the path of a simple random walk on a lattice, interacts with an environment given by a collection of time-dependent random variables associated to the vertices. Under certain conditions, the system undergoes a phase transition from an entropy-dominated regime at high temperatures, to a localised regime at low temperatures. Our main result shows that at high temperatures, even though
