Thirion, Agnès. "André Pieyre de Mandiargues, l'écriture comme cérémonial." Chambéry, 1996. http://www.theses.fr/1996CHAML002.
The purpose of this thesis is to analyse the prose in the short stories of the french writer, André Pieyre de Mandiargues (1909-1991). The intention is to show how the storywriter's imaginary imposes a ceremonial form to the style. Mandiargues's text is effectively an entire celebration : the specificity of the style appears in its liturgical aspects and through the presence of a sacrifice in the realization of the tale. The cult which is celebrated has its foundation in a gnostic creed and that kind of mediation is sacrificial : through the sacrifice , the real is derealized and transmuted. Mandiargues's style, which is revelation, creates a world totally born out of its gaze and through an appeal to senses and an initiatic step, which is a sacralization of the universe in a cosmic communion and a possible fusion, he will reach his reader. Mandiargues's imaginary is constantly building precarious shelters where time takes the shape of space and comes to a halt in an indefinite wait
Sapino, Roberta. "André Pieyre de Mandiargues : une éthique du témoignage." Thesis, Nantes, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017NANT2017/document.
This thesis aims at understanding whether André Pieyre de Mandiargues' works can be considered a testimony of the experience of reality or experience of the impossible, as defined by Bataille. For this purpose, the thesis examines Mandiargues' novels from the point of view of the witness, a symbolic figure explicitly appearing for the first time in Marbre ou les mystères d’Italie, but already surfaced under different disguises since his earliest works. The presence of the witness, a mirror of the author within the narrative, blurs the boundaries between life and fantasy, and calls into question the traditional relationship between writing, life and truth. The thesis then observes how the impossibility of grounding the narrative on the coherent identity of a subject who can speak of himself as an I – an identity collapsed under the double blows of the avant-gardes and psychoanalysis – demands the search for a writing founded on imagination and fiction. In particular, the web of characters Mandiargues weaves into his novels and short stories allows the author to insert his own Self and experience of reality within the narrative. Writing, then, leads to a sort of "true lying," a way for the author to testify about the rupturing force of certain experiences of life – caused by shock or wonder – up to their most unbearable aspects, without betraying the truth hidden within those same experiences. Finally, the thesis closes with a final observation on how this perspective gives the act of writing an ethical value of its own, regardless of how conforming or not the novel is to our society's moral norms

It considers it under the double point of view of poetic and the set of themes and fact call to judgments of andre pieyre de mandiargues to found its step or to justify the conclusions of its analyses

Ferré, Jean-Claude. "L' érotisme métaphysique d'André Pieyre de Mandiargues." Nantes, 2004. http://www.theses.fr/2004NANT3002.
André Pieyre de Mandiargues is the author of erotic books, witch are also"metaphysical", although be has never explicated as to what this term implied for in. His eroticism is "metaphysical", as Chirico's painting is metaphysical, or as Ferrare is " una citta metafisica". Mandiargues's eroticism is abstract, oneric and fantastic ; it is a romantic sublimation, and absolute disconnected from reality. This eroticism, fed with phantasms and dreams, is the the pretext and the matter of writing. In addition, it is a rebellion against "bourgeois" values he hated. As most major authors, Mandiargues has created a unique and secret world without giving the key to it. Eroticism and fantastic are the materials of this exclusive world, as well as an almost gongoristic mannered style. Mandiargues' world, constituted of esoteric and psychoanalytical hints and of ininterrupted dreams, is subjugated by love for Woman, sadomasochism the infernal Eros and Thanatos couple soon joined by Chronos

The mandiarguian text acquires its fantastic dimension through a progressive transformation of the protagonist's point of view, inciting him to perceive his environment as a gigantic monstrous entity. Contact with this entity causes the protagonist's own personality to be replaced by that of the monster. Yet it is the woman who, as a representative of the sacred in the logic of fantastic stories, remains in Mandiargues' text the best incarnation of the monstrous figure. Man, who represents the profane, will emerge contaminated by the sacred from his encounter with the monstrous and devouring woman. This contagion is incarnated by the androgynous figure, which remains most convincingly represented within this work by the negro. Finally, by comparing Mandiargues' writing devices with the techniques used in horror museums of old for monsters stage exhibitions, we will be able to confirm our initial hypothesis: the monster figure, by being the motor of the fantastic element dynamic, is essential to the unity of the collection.
The second part of this work in literary creation is a collection of fantastic short stories, all of which feature the same troubling presence. This presence possesses several characteristics of the monster figure, as seen in the work of Mandiargues.

Abstract : It is the author's intention to analyse APM's work in order to study his using Italy as a spacial and cultural referent, as a fantasy territory and as a collection of various themes and shapes contributing to the creation of an original esthetics. This analysis will be three-fold : first the author will show how the genre of the travel diary enables APM to show the redaer his favorite places and how it underlines the relation existing between personal experience and the act of writing. By selecting this genre, APM choses to move towards a poetic writing and descriptive style. In the second part, the author will study how the diversity of exchanges with the Italian art allows for thematic and formal suggestions. Italy is rehabilitated as the land of fantasy and of surrealism, mannerist painting encourages a pictural and citational form of writing and the Baroque style contributes to the theatralization of writing. Finally, in the third part, the author will show how Italy can induce a poetic form of writing based on the commonplace : as visual myth and space of the "deja-dit", Italy is an essential component of scenographic writing in which times escapes contingency and patterns are re-presented
