Abstract:
A prominent feature of Norwegian nationalism in the second half of the nineteenth century and in the first half of the twentieth century was its use of Norway’s Viking and medieval history. This use is visible in Norwegian popular and political culture of the period with, among other things, the Norwegianization of city names and the emergence of the Dragon style. This article examines the role of commemoration of Viking heroes in Norwegian street names and memory sites in the period 1850-1940. In doing so, the article identifies who were remembered, when and where, and shows how there was an

Abstract:
In this article, the author argues that the need for recognition is a defining feature of the ways WW2 is commemorated and represented today, both in terms of professional history and popular narratives. WW2 as a source of recognition for groups and individuals is described as a process with three constitutive elements: diversity of narratives, a “moral turn”, and the personal acquisition of history. While representations of Norway and WW2 previously fit into an ideal-typical form based on how different stories related to the established – or later expanded and nuanced – basic narrative, the memory culture has turned and gained a more horizontally arranged structure from the 2000s. The characteristic of the 2020 anniversary seems to be a battle for attention and recognition. This is described as an agonistic memory culture. Also, WW2 as a source of recognition means that sensitive dimensions are activated. This has led to a change regarding the role of historians in society. Historians and other professional history-workers must not only master “real history”, but they must also be able to handle and contribute to meaningful processing of conflicts related to how the past is being understood, articulated, and negotiated.

Abstract:
During the Second World War, the merchant fleet and its seafarers represented Norway’s most significant contribution to the Allied war effort. However, lack of recognition has in many ways defined the post-war era of the “war sailors”, as the wartime seafarers are called in Scandinavia. Publicity is a part of recognition, and this article studies in what degree the “war sailors” have received publicity from 1945 to 2019. Using search results from a database of digitized Norwegian newspapers, some clear patterns emerge. The war efforts of the merchant seafarers were not forgotten immediately after the war, but they were not in the limelight. Not long after, the “war sailors” disappeared from the newspaper columns. In connection with the three milestones in the battle of “the secret fund of Nortraship”, they received a short-term increase of publicity. The last decade’s increased publicity seems to be more long-lasting, and it has become honourable to be called a “war sailor”. Gradually, several groups of seafarers have been included in the term and are now remembered as “war sailors”. This is partly a result of the need for visibility and recognition for forgotten groups of wartime seafarers.

Abstract:
Under the surface of our societies, there are thousands and thousands of stories which could add nuances and details to a black-and-white picture of historical events. But many of these stories are too private, too personal or too traumatic to share. Feelings like despair, shame or guilt might be associated, and one could be afraid of the reactions of others when telling them. Here, museum institutions and museum professionals might function as mediators and connecting links between those who want to share but do not know how – and those who need to know. In this article, we present the first results of a documentary- and exhibition project dealing with the long-term consequences of WW2—in the families and in the local societies. 21 informants, mainly from the second and third generation, were questioned about how difficult and traumatic experiences—during or after the war—affected their families and their own feeling of identity. The answers we received showed that especially the not-knowing what has happened often has severe effects on one’s personal life and well-being.

Abstract:
In this article, I analyze three novelistic projects from the last decade, i.e., Jon Michelet’s six-volume work En sjøens helt (2012–2018), Simon Stranger’s Leksikon om lys og mørke (2018), and Kjartan Fløgstad’s Due og drone (2019). The novels address events during the war but have different agendas in contemporary public debate. Michelet’s errand is to draw attention to the war sailors’ achievements, Stranger’s to remind us of the sufferings of the Jews, as well as to try to understand a Norwegian Nazi, and Fløgstad’s to underpin a thesis about the corruptive workings of capitalism and today’s terrorism’s roots in the past. I show how Michelet uses the suspense genre, and how he writes engaging about his seamen, but recirculates an old-fashioned gender matrix. Stranger involves the reader in the questions he asks and tries to evoke empathy and promote insight but tends to use clichés and a pathologizing discourse to understand the perpetrator. Fløgstad has a deconstructive strategy in his plot development since the novel’s generational pattern, its hero narratives and its subject constitutions are consistently questioned and dissolved. His style is more self-reflective than the other two, due to a saturating ironic rhetoric and a playful attitude to conventions. Finally, I discuss the noteworthy phenomenon, that they all use sexuality to further their conceptualizations of the past in the present.

Abstract:
The denazification of associations, organisations and unions is one of the lesser discussed topics from the aftermath of the Second World War. The trials against the supporters of the Nazi occupation, the Nazi leaders and war criminals have been discussed many times from many perspectives. The exclusion of members of the Norwegian Nazi party and others that sabotaged the resistance line and instead used the occupation years to personal gains of power and wealth, occurred in the organisations by the members without the use of the courtroom. In the organisations the members were both prosecutors and judges when the decisions were made; loss of membership or milder sanctions. The article argues that this was practising the freedom for the citizens to establish and to decide the rules of the organisation without the involvement of the state or other instances. The interest for these processes just after the war and how they were experienced by the members turned from low to high after the writers’ union apologized for the process on their 125 years anniversary meeting in 2018. At first the apology was positively received, but criticism also pointed out that the excuse for this group was not at all like other excuses to Jews, partisans and other victim groups by the government or other representants for the authority. The discussion about the matter shed light on questions about the rule of law for members of organisations and unions, and for the transition of the Norwegian society from occupied to free, from dictatorship to democracy.

Abstract:
This is the story of Cheese, the intelligence and sabotage organisation that, after British initiative, was built around the radio transmitter at Helle in Flekkefjord in January 1941. Cheese was one of the first operations to come to Norway for the purpose of weakening Germany’s military and economic capacity in the occupied country. The transmitter at Helle was the first SOE-operation to establish two-ways contact between Norway and the British and Norwegian authorities in London. For most of 1941, only one other SIS transmitter was active in Norway. In January 1942, Odd Starheim and Andreas Fasting were also the first SOE agents to be parachuted over Norway. Cheese made early contacts with the organisation in Oslo which later became Milorg. Cheese had port-spies in Stavanger and Kristiansand and close contact with people in the oil companies and airports. In addition, the organisation had a well-functioning courier system from Oslo to Stavanger, and all routes led to Tor Njaa and then to Tomstad and Starheim at Helle. The heroes are known, but in this network, there are still many unknown names. Cheese reported on the shipping traffic along the coast, the construction of German military facilities, the oil supplies in the country, the movement of military forces and the political development in the country. Two of these topics are presented here: the bombing of Sola airport and the preparation of operation Barbarossa.

I elaborate on the relationship between memory and recognition, in light of my experimental novel Sankthans (Wichne, 2019). I claim that memory does not appear as a result of recognition, and that the discrepancy between the states of memorizing and recognizing might prove fruitful for poetic writing. The contribution ends with five poems.
