Abstract:
“Love to the miserable” was one of characteristics of a good prince in Old Rus. Many times written sources mention alms-giving by Rus princes. For example, most of the so-called necrologues (characteristics of deceased princes accompanying announcements of their passing away in Rus chronicles) mention alms-giving. Almost always necrologues do not present any details of this, except in the case of Andrey Bogolyubsky (the “God-loving”, killed in 1174). This prince is said to have initiated delivering food and drinks for the poor and the prisoners in wagons riding along the streets. This is a cle

The present paper deals with a long inscription which was uncovered in the autumn of 2015 on the external wall of the southern apse of the 12th century Transfiguration Cathedral in Pereslavl-Zalessky. It contains an almost fully legible list of assassins of the Vladimir-Suzdal prince Andrey Yuryevich, who was murdered in Bogolyubovo on June 29th, 1174. The writer places a curse on the murderers and wishes eternal memory to the prince. The graffito probably dates from 1175–1176 when Andrey’s younger brother Vsevolod Yuryevich ruled in Pereyaslavl. The campaign of Andrey Bogolyubsky’s troops had the most catastrophic consequences for the future of the city: the complete looting of churches and monasteries, the fall of the authority of Kyiv, the incalculable material damage caused to the elites and the ordinary population living in the city. At the same time, it must be recognized that Kyiv has experienced similar acts of violence before. During the Polovtsian hikes burned the suburbs of the Mother of Rus’ cities.
