Abstract:
Androcentrism refers to the propensity to center society around men and men’s needs, priorities, and values and to relegate women to the periphery. Androcentrism also positions men as the gender-neutral standard while marking women as gender-specific. Examples of androcentrism include the use of male terms (e.g., he), images, and research participants to represent everyone. Androcentrism has been shown to have serious consequences. For example, women’s health has been adversely affected by over-generalized medical research based solely on male participants. Nonetheless, relatively little is known about androcentrism’s proximate psychological causes. In the present review, we propose a social cognitive perspective arguing that both social power and categorization processes are integral to understanding androcentrism. We present and evaluate three possible pathways to androcentrism deriving from (a) men being more frequently instantiated than women, (b) masculinity being more “ideal” than femininity, and/or (c) masculinity being more common than femininity.

ABSTRACT: Starting from a critical reading of works on the history of African philosophy, introduction to African philosophies and anthologies specialized in this area, this paper aims to problematize the paradoxical position of denouncing the intellectual exclusion of African philosophical thought, while ending up promoting an epistemic marginalization of female philosophers African. By signaling that androcentrism structures the fundamental core of works that introduce and disseminate African philosophical thought, the paper adds to the efforts to radicalize the anti-exclusionary perspective of the practice of African philosophies, pointing to the need for a critical review of these diffusion works and training in philosophy.

Abstract:
Recent findings indicate that a slow Life History (LH) strategy factor is associated with increased levels of Executive Functioning (EF), increased emotional intelligence, decreased levels of sexually coercive behaviors, and decreased levels of negative ethnocentrism. Based on these findings, as well as the generative theory, we predicted that slow LH strategy should inhibit negative androcentrism (bias against women). A sample of undergraduates responded to a battery of questionnaires measuring various facets of their LH Strategy, (e.g., sociosexual orientation, mating effort, mate-value, psychopathy, executive functioning, and emotional intelligence) and various convergent measures of Negative Androcentrism. A structural model that the data fit well indicated a latent protective LH strategy trait predicted decreased negative androcentrism. This trait fully mediated the relationship between participant biological sex and androcentrism. We suggest that slow LH strategy may inhibit negative attitudes toward women because of relatively decreased intrasexual competition and intersexual conflict among slow LH strategists. Abstract:
Androcentrism is a value system that views the male perspective as superior to the female perspective. Some theorists maintain that androcentric bias explains why, compared to their numbers in education, women continue to be underrepresented in administrative positions. This article reports the findings of a study examining teacher reactions to job descriptions depicting attributes of the principalship purported to influence men and women differently. Contrary to our expectations, both men and women preferred the job descriptions depicting the collaborative style of leadership previously ascribed to women. Does this finding portend the demise of the gender-based value system found in educational administration?

Abstract:
Androcentrism continues to be the basis for modern thinking, and the comprehension of its manifestations in the philosophical tradition appears to be a necessary step to change this situation. The purpose of this work is to analyze the theory of K. Marx for its androcentrism, to identify its significant provisions based on it. The analysis is built around testing how the “general” statements of Marx reflect women’s experience, how they are woven into the whole of the theory and how much they are substantiated by it. It was revealed that, firstly, Marx could not substantiate the position that the roots of oppression of women lie in the mode of production, since he did not consider the fact of higher pay for male labor to be significant, taking it for granted. Secondly, he did not consider the exploitation of “free” female labor in the family significant, and considered the primary division of labor within its framework to be natural. Thirdly, Marx was unable to detect the transformation of female bodies into a resource for men as a condition of capitalism because he did not see a problem in male control over female birth ability. The theory of Karl Marx, thus, is a part of the androcentric tradition and should be considered in science as such.

Abstract:
Judith Butler’s writings on gender ostensibly changed the way gender is considered with regard to an individual’s subjectivity. Her writings expressed a discursive parameter that changed the theoretical standpoint of gender from that of performance, to that of performativity. In short, the notion of gender became understood as a power mechanism operating within society that compels individuals along the heteronormal binary tracts of male or female, man or woman. Within the strata of popular culture, this binarism is seemingly ritualized and repeated, incessantly. This treatise examines how rock music, as a popular and widespread mode of popular music, exemplifies gender binarism through a notable ndrocentrism. The research will examine how gender performativity operates within the taxonomy of rock music, and how the message communicated by rock music becomes translated into a listener’s subjectivity.

This bachelor thesis examines gender structures in the university field. The aim is to study whether, and if sowhy, students attribute male gender to a researcher referred to in the course literature. The researcher is onlymentioned by the last name Björk, in order to be regarded as gender neutral.</p><p>An experimental method was used to test the hypothesis that the conception of “researcher” is male-biased. A gender neutral sample text and a survey were handed out to 92 university students. Therespondents were asked to attribute gender to the researcher Björk. The results confirmed the hypothesis andshowed that 71 percent of the students attributed male gender to the researcher. There was also a tendencythat the older students attributed male gender more often than the younger students did.</p><p>The analysis of the results shows that male gender is viewed as normative in the academy. Thisinterpretation is based on Simone de Beauvoir's theory about women as the Other in relation to men. Thegender specific attribution to a researcher is interpreted, in the words of Pierre Bourdieu, as internalizedconceptions in the student's habitus. The students answer the question about Björk's gender according to theirhabitus, which is based on the internal structures of the university field, where the male gender is seen as thedominant sex.</p>

Abstract:

Abstract:
This dissertation abords the power relations that mark the modern occidental scientific production from the point of view of the Gender and Science studies of the north-american feminist and historian of science Donna Haraway. The author proposes a conception of all the knowledge production as a political practice, assuming a partial perspective as a fundament to an objective science and pointing the objectivity perspective based on the idea of impartiality as a producer of a type of knowledge that historically served as an instrument of domination: the knowledge that proposes itself as universal. In her narrative, the androcentrism, ethnocentrism, racism and the class divisions operate on the conformation and the transformations of this science from the construction of a knowledge privileged persona, the scientist, character developed from the image and similarity of an independent western white man. My extract of the book is the reformulations of these relationships along with the modern western science observed by the author in the emerging and in the productions of a specific group of disciplines in the field of biological natural science, which were strongly marked by the theory and technology of information and communication produced in the cybernetic science. In the construction of a critic discussion about the hegemonic nowerpowers, Haraway brings monstrous characters to light, among them a cyborg, as much as a way to revel cultural categories acting in the knowledge production as to materialize new meanings to the nature, bodies and the differences relationships. Compromised with these monsters, human figures and non-human redefined in her narratives, the author defends a relationship of connection, and not of division, between the subject and the object of knowledge.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to show how the ideas of gender equality in the late 1970 ́s and early 80 ́s were expressed in Swedish medical discourse. The questions asked are primarily how the ideas came to matter in medical discourse as well as the resistance against these ideas. The primary method used is a modified form of discourse analysis, to suit the aim of this study. The study draws upon three Official Reports of the Swedish Government. Prior research has found that ideas of female submission were a dominant part of the medical discourse, as well as the image of the caring mother. Research has also found that the traditional image of male and female as different species were in a profound reform process, due to, for example, the feminist revolutions, in which gender equality became a prioritized part of the international political agenda. This study shows that the resistance to the ideas of gender equality within the medical discourse was still hard to break trough in the early 1980 ́s. The women that were represented in medical studies, as scientists or as a target for research, were minimal or not represented at all – but they who did illustrates how the androcentric ideals of the medical discourse dominated the selection of objects to research, as well as the research itself. This study also shows that, even though the ideas of gender equality were politically accepted, and academic expressions of the opposite opinion were not, the expectations of men and women were still rooted in older ideas of the rational working man and the emotional house wife. Maltesson, Johan. "Jakten vid makten - queerfrihetsslakten? : Examination of the androcentric parallels between hunting traditions and hetero-normative societal structures." Thesis, Karlstad University, Faculty of Social and Life Sciences, 2006. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-452.

Full text
Abstract:
The hunting tradition is an example of speciesism – discrimination of an individual on the grounds of to which species it belongs. Hunting is justified by the presumption that the life of an animal is of a lesser value than the life of human being. But hunting is also a seemingly very male dominated and hetero-normative field. This text is a discussion around the parallels between hetero-normative structures and the hunting tradition, based on an examination on the language and attitudes in hunting magazines, and analyzed from a queer theoretic and antispeciesist perspective.</p><p>The examination of the texts are made from the categories of control, objectification and categorization, masculinity standardization, glorification of violence, and hierarchic structuring, which are all of them contributing to a speciesist view, and by such are crucial for the being and justification of hunting. Within these categories, I have then looked for parallels with hetero-normative and androcentric traditions.</p><p>The parallels proved to be many and often obvious, and were found within all of the examined fields – all of the examined fields which give possibility for the hunting tradition, are also fundamental for an androcentrically structured society and a continued oppression of non-hetero-normative persons.</p><p>In conclusion, traditions which are favouring predominant structures and which leads to oppression and lack of freedom for one group also risk to automatically affect other oppressed groups. And in reverse, rights won for one oppressed group may weaken the predominant structures overall, and by such also bring increased opportunities for other oppressed groups to claim their rights too.</p>

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractThis research addresses how gods may be gender-typed in children’s drawings. It offers cross-cultural comparisons on four distinct samples of drawings from Japan, Switzerland, Buryatia and Saint Petersburg (Russia). We discuss the challenges that arise when rating gender categories in children’s drawings, especially when drawing on a cross-cultural sample. Then we propose two approaches for the empirical analysis of the data: (1) providing a general description of the utilization of gender categories; (2) considering the data from a qualitative perspective, comparing children’s strategies and cultural references. In the main, while there seems to be cultural differences (as observed between samples), three main sources of normative pressure might exist: androcentrism, same-gender preference, and masculine hegemony. We discuss the observed phenomena in terms of socio-normative influence, cultural and religious references made available, gender traits, and gender transgression.

Abstract:
AbstractBased on a study initiated in 2018 (Persson, ¡La maternidad será deseada o no será!: En kvalitativ analys av feministiska strategier i kampen för fri, (laglig), säker och gratis abort i Chile (Thesis). Lund University, 2019), this chapter revisits and re-examines feminist mobilisations around reproductive rights and justice in Chile. Focusing on performative and discursive strategies used by feminist organisations in the struggle for free abortion, the aim of the chapter is to analyse how such strategies are grounded in epistemologies of embodied resistance to past and present biopolitical and anti-gender regimes. The theoretical framework draws upon a feminist trajectory of (gendered) biopolitics, and embodied performativity and reproductive justice are key concepts in the analysis. The chapter argues that the demands for easy, (legal,) safe and free abortion constitute the frame within which the struggle for free abortion is situated. Subsequently, the struggle situates itself outside of the binary scope of the pro-choice/pro-life dichotomy. The chapter also demonstrates how feminists use a wide range of discursive and embodied performative strategies to centre upon issues such as linguistic androcentrism, sociocultural stigma around abortion, misogyny institutionalised in the healthcare system, compulsory motherhood, economic inequalities and racism. Hence, the struggle for abortion is connected to the struggle to improve the material conditions of women’s lives as well as to the struggle for an extensive democratisation of Chilean society.

Abstract:
Abstract Throughout the mechanical design process, designers, the majority of whom are men, often fail to consider the needs of women, resulting in consequences ranging from inconvenience to increase risk of death or serious injury. Although these biases are well-studied in other fields of research, the mechanical design field lacks formal investigation into this phenomenon. In this study, undergraduate engineering students (n = 151) took a survey in which they read a Persona describing a student makerspace employee and a Walkthrough describing their interaction with the makerspace while completing a project. During the Walkthrough, the user encountered various obstacles, or Pain Points. Participants were asked to recall and evaluate the Pain Points that the user encountered, then evaluated their perceptions of the makerspace and user. Six different experimental conditions were used to investigate the impact of gender-stereotyped tasks and the gender of a user on designers’ interpretation of them and their needs. In addition to finding that the gender of a user impacted the way a task environment was perceived, results confirmed the presence of androcentrism, or “default man” assumptions, in the way designers view end users of unknown gender. Future work will explore methodologies of overcoming this bias so that designers are able to consider the diverse needs of a range of users.

Abstract:
Data Visualisation is currently seen as a powerful communication tool, as the human mind is more receptive to visual information than words or raw data. However, most existing visualisations are done from an androcentric perspective. This article proposes Data Visualisation from a feminist perspective. To this end, concepts such as Feminism, Data Visualisation and Data Feminism will be addressed to arrive at the concept of Data Visualisation in Feminism, resulting in a set of guidelines and recommendations to be incorporated when designing Data Visualisations. As part of the work carried out, an existing data visualisation was selected and analysed, highlighting the guidelines of Data Feminism in Data Visualisation. As a result, a recreation of this visualisation is proposed, incorporating the Data Feminism guidelines. It was found that the resulting visualisation is different from the original and is aligned with the concepts of Data Feminism.

Abstract:
In the context of our current planetary crises, in a world that continues to be shaped by capitalist, colonialist, androcentric and anthropocentric visions, we are faced with the urgency of reconsidering, at the deepest levels, the way we relate with other human and nonhuman beings. This working paper aims to contribute towards that end by looking at human-nonhuman relations through the concept of conviviality, understood as the everyday living together with difference, and how it intersects with inequality. In the first part of this paper, more-than-human conviviality-inequality is investigated by critically analyzing onto-epistemological and methodological approaches that question, subvert or reproduce hegemonic thinking and worldviews on humannonhuman relations like historical materialism, new materialisms, transhumanism, posthumanisms, and indigenous relational ontologies. In the second part, I look at particular relational dimensions like incompleteness, translation, and affect, which can help us create new understandings of more-than-human conviviality-inequality in Latin America and beyond.
